Hello,
My current phone is the HTC S730, and I never use the Keyboard. I tested the S740, but I feel it's too big and the keyboard is useless for me .
I was just wondering if anyone had some info about a HTC phone that would have all specs of the S740 with no slide keyboard. Just regular number T9.
This would be my dream phone (small, thin, nice screen, GPS, FM Radio, Windows mobile 6.1,...)
Anybody know if such phone would exist or would be planned ?
I saw the HTC Snap but the size is also to big for what i'm looking for, and the full keyboard is not for me.
Thank you for any info.

Hi Frem, I know of no such device. If there were, i'd be tempted to trade in my S740 for it.
I felt the same way at first regarding the size, now, having used the device for a fair while it doesn't bother me as much. The S740 was brought as a replacement to my i-mate SP5. The S740 is actually slightly longer, and just as thick as the SP5!
I actually had the i-mate SP5 (AKA Qtek 8310) before my HTC S730.
I didn't realized the size you mention.
Now that I think about it maybe the S740 isn't that bad.
Height x Width x Thickness
107.5 x 46.2 x 17.5 mm (Imate SP5)
105.8 x 51.0 x 19.4 mm (HTC S730)
116.3 x 43.4 x 16.3 mm (HTC S740)
I really wish that they made a HTC S740 with no keyboard, I'm sure they would be able to reduce the Thickness to 10.0 mm.
Can you tell me how is the screen size of the S740 is, compare to the i-mate SP5 ?
And overall are you satisfied with it ?

AVE..
My first phone was made of cast iron and rubber. It could have been used as table tennis bat...
I use keyboard in my S740 all the time. Mostly because T9 for polish is a bit messed up. And in most of apps I can use Ctrl+A/C/V, so it's easier than using menu. Before this phone I had a Nokia E50, the lack of QWERTY keyboard was main reason for me to start using Ebay. I wanted to buy external keyboard for it.
One thing that is really annoying me is the microSDHC slot. Placing it under the SIM card is stupid. Every time I want to take out the card I have to turn off the phone. In Nokia E50 it is placed on the side, under the battery cover. I had to open the cover and was able to remove the card without any problems, and when I put it back, I could access al files instantly. I wonder, how it's made in other HTC phones...

That's great. But what has activesync got to do with MicroSDHC card or indeed a S740 with no keyboard (what this thread is about). I'm not trying to be confrontational, but if you quote somebody, your post should have some correlation. I'm sure in your head it has, but that has not translated in your post.

Hi
Just to let you folks know what a 'GREAT' device the new Ameo really is.
I received mine from T-Mobile earlier this week and first impressions were what a 'GREAT' big brick it actually was. I was always aware that the Universal was big but I couldn't believe that anyone would put up with the increased bulk of this new kid on the block.
I now know why I have become so smitten with the Ameo.
Having spent a few days with my huge friend I am somewhat taken in by its capabilities. Firstly you could never use the Ameo as a normal phone and this is reflected in the handset restricted use ie speakerphone/wired headset or the bluetooth equivalent. Could you really hold this beast to your ear and talk ?
Using the universal always made me tempted to use it as a conventional phone and forget its many virtues ie beautiful vga screen high spec built in qwerty keyboard etc.
I have been using the Spv M700 which I found to be far superior to the Compact III(Artemis) ie wi-fi 3g high speed data etc.
I found the Compact III to be sadly lacking with so many features compared to the vario 2. I know the in built Gps is a welcome addition but the spec of the device was a step backwards in my opinion.
Back to the Ameo.
Fast processor, beautiful screen, first class innovative keypad( graffiti is my preferred text method but the magnetic keyboard is a great idea) and what about that whopping 8GB microdrive. Plus you have the ability to increase the memory still further with the mini sd slot.
You are left in no doubt with the Ameo that your main use has to be its data capabilities.
I had used the Universal for a few months and whilst I found the device to be large it was still a great piece of kit. I understand that the Ameo is not the upgraded version of the mda pro.
Last of all can I congratulate T-Mobile with its bold move to be the first UK network to release the Ameo
Small is good but big is even better
The phone we all know and love, is still very much in use even for its age, and still yet there isn't any flip windows phone on the market.
Its obvious by the popularity of this forum and the age of the phone that there is a market for an updated phone like ours.
Are HTC missing an oppoortunity
Is there any way we can let HTC know this.
Good point - but all they'd need to do is bring a version out with more memory and a WiFi connection - my ideal phone...
Good camera might help too
Jemma xx
Totally with you on this one!!!
I would pay top dollar for a new WM 6.1/6.5 Standard phone with the same format/size/shape as the HTC StrTrk but with all the modern specs (Faster Processor, more Rom/Ram, 3G, GPS, WiFi).
I would happily communicate this to HTC / Other OEM's if I thought it would be worth it.

+1
I was recently supplied an HTC Touch Diamond by my work. After a few weeks, it went back in the drawer. I've gone back to my S301 (running WM6.1) exclusively. It's biggest failing is network speed. If there were a new version with 3G and a GPS I would grab it quick smart.
I would buy the star trek II in a minute, Windows mobile 6.5, 3G, and SDHC card support. The perfect phone.
But most people want cheap or keyboards.
+1 for a revised version
I keep 2-3 spares at home from Ebay as replacements. Still one of the best all time form factors, keypad response, etc... for any Windows Mobile device I've ever used.
Hi there,
For anyone that has/used one of these I've got a few questions if you'd be able to answer...
1. Does the camera have a decent sounding speakerphone?
2. I presume it uses Opera as the web browser?
3. How does this feel in the pocket? I'm so unsure about the slanty bottom as if it is in the pocket, surely it doesn't feel that good?
4. Again, the slanty bottom... Does it make it hard to text in landscape mode?
If anyone has this and is using it, can you give us your feel compared to other phones. I have a Touch Pro 2 at the minute, and want to base this android vs windows mobile as they have more or less the same hardware.
Thanks
Hi there,
I do *not* have a Hero, waiting for its release...but I was at a local store today and they had dummy handsets, correct weight and size.
I asked to put one in my jeans pocket to see how it felt, and it was fine. I thought exactly like you but trust me, you cannot feel any major diff from a non angled phone.
That issue will be fine for you, trust me on it.

Why would it use Opera?
I think it uses the more or less 'default android browser'. I didn't even hear of an Opera version for Android.

1. Played with both a white and Graphite handset... both felt extremely solid, had a great weight to them and build quality was superb.
Screen very responsive (along with the UI) and great visual quality.
Feel of teflon back was very soft and quite grippy. Both units have the coating. Prefer the white handset personally, but the graphite was also very very nice.
Metal trim around screen a great touch.
Feels a solid, comfortable quality product in the hand.
Easily pocketable, no issue with 'chin'. Not that I thought there would be.
2. No problems using the most excellent on screen keyboard landscape or portrait with very subtle haptic feedback. Accuracy of hitting the right 'keys' was not an issue, the keyboard seems to second guess what you're writing and offers very sensible and logical suggestions. Just hit space or suggested word to continue typing and have the word auto completed.
3. Browser very fast scrolling and multi touch with text re-flow makes most sites I visited a breeze to read. All appeared rendered very well.
Do I want a Hero ???
Oh YES

Where did you have a play? did they have any stock available?
It was not in a retail location. If it was I would have bought one there an then
The thing that still sticks in my mind is the quality feel the product has.
Nokia REALLY is screwed if this is what is appearing on the market. They are still delivering Nseries creaky plastic rubbish with an ancient UI... S60 5th Edition looks and works in such a dated way compared to Hero and iPhone 3GS.
N97 - the great amazing S60 handset... PAH.
Apple seriously have competition now hardware and UI wise. The availability of good quality apps is now the battleground.
What did you think to the speed then? Honestly? Was it fast loading messages, calendar, going into new applications? Or is it quite slow which I seem to be seeing on more and more YouTube apps.
Cheers

i've got chance to trade my htc diamond for tg01 but i sold it before(it was brand new) so i've got cash now. i see prices here around like 100euro for used tg01's so i wish to know if it's worth buyin it.
i'm usually hd2 guy(using it 1,5 year) so how do these devices compare(seeing pretty close specs). would you buy it again if you have choice?
hoping to hear first-hand

tg01 has near same hd2 specs, has a good resistiv 4,1" lcd. here is often the problem, devices around 100euro has scratches on PLASTIC screen. for 150 - 180 you can get a well-kept device and this is worth. with a good modified custom ROM is a good and fast WinMo device. ROM flashing is very quick and easy- this make a great fun.
you have a grat choice of different ROMs and Radios .i would buy it again (i have actuall 3x tg01, 1x very used, 1x good and 1x exellent)

An excellent device in nearly all respects. As indicated above, is easy to flash and has opened up all sorts of opportunities for development both large and small.
Good resistive screen - one key reason I went for the TG01 - enables handwriting recognition and detailed pointing with the stylus when you want it, but also pretty sensitive for finger touch also when preferred (trick is setting screen sensitivity in registry, either manually to taste or via a generic .cab). Best of both worlds really, while the now almost ubiquitous capacitive screen is of course incapable of screen writing.
Main regrets are:
- Lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, but a suitable dongle works OK in the uUSB port
- Inability to charge while using the USB port for audio out
But both of these can be addressed by using a Bluetooth headset adapter, thus freeing the uUSB port for connection to an external device (eg. charging or perhaps an external hard drive, memory stick, etc.)
Definitely a very respectable piece of kit which continues to have significant potential
Best regards,
Kevin

I have a chance to choose as a gift between mediapad lumia 710 and wildfire s.
I don't want to go for the nokia, it's with wp7.5, and i already have an original wildfire for just about 1,5 years and has connection issues. Should I go for media pad? Is it worth?
I don't know this brand at all, is it trustworthy?

If you want to use it yourself then just go for it. If you want to sell it, depending on the country, probably Lumia or HTC are the better choices.
As for the credibility of Huawei, just Google it
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk 2
You are comparing a 7" tablet with a 3.2" or 3.7" phone. You can find a spec comparison of the Mediapad and the Wildfire S here: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4264&idPhone2=3777 You can also use the page for comparing the Lumina.
Besides their difference in size, there are also other significant differences, e.g. the Mediapad is more than three times the weight of the Wildfire S).
However: I just unpacked my Mediapad and it is an very nice device. Its built is solid and I like its feel (I had a SGT for a short time before. Didn't like it).
If you look for a tablet that size, go for the Mediapad. It offers a good value for the price (around 300€ in .de). If you look for a phone, probably the Wildfire or Lumina is the better choice.
Using the Medaipad as phone might also look a bit funny if you do not use a headset (maybe like this: http://gigaom2.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/tablet-as-phone.jpeg?w=210&h=300)
As for the company, Huawei is a Chinese manufacturer, which is active in Europe mainly by providing infrastructure components for communication/GSM networks. They started to bring customer end-products to the European market some time ago and are set to drastically increase their market share.
From a consumer standpoint, I think they can be trusted the same way as aKorean or Taiwanese phone manufacturer. But maybe check for customer service in your area.
Cheers,
CS
Thank you very much for your replies. The fact is that I don't want a WP phone, as I am used to the android structure and interface, and also the openings that the android allows as an open-source os. I have never used a smartphone with an OS different than Android, and if wp are just like normal windows then it is for sure a no-go. And about Wildfire S... I don't know... I am using the original one right now, and from day first I wanted more performance, and this is one thing that wf's don't do. Also I have connectivity issues (signal and wifi) whatever rom or radio I used. And it is only 18 months old phone.
Amd yes I am going to use it as a phone too, to make calls and send sms's. One of my biggest concern is about moving with it around... Is it comfortable? (note, that I hadn't owned any other tablet in the past). Do you use/need a bag like a netbook/notebook?

Ok. I'm in the U.S. and the Springboard (which is essentially the Mediapad) is not used as a phone (by T-Mobile)... mind you once rooted it could be used as such (sort of. you need only to read the questions of folks trying to get their rooted Springboard to work as a phone). I don't know that I would want to use a tablet like a phone. For starters while it is not as large as a 10 inch tablet, it still would be awkward holding it up to your face to talk. I just recently saw a Samsung Galaxy Note. It's a 5 inch tablet that works as a phone but even that looked weird size-wise holding it to your face. You would probably not look as weird if you paired the tablet with a bluetooth headset and use it as a phone that way.
This tablet is 7 inches and you could put it in a case that would make people think you are carrying around an ebook reader. Since it's 7 inches you wouldn't necessarily need to cart it around in a netbook case unless you wanted to. It fits nicely in other things although I would probably put it in a protective sleeve if I were going to put it in a messenger bag or purse.
Windows Phone isn't like your regular windows. It's a true phone ui unlike the old Windows Mobile which felt like a small desktop ui. Just go to YouTube and see it yourself.
Of course nothing beats the openness of Android, but in media pad case, you basically only got root instead of a full custom rom since Huawei haven't release the source code. Root only is good enough for me, since I mainly use root access for backup. Other people might be disappointed because they're expecting custom rom.
As for using it as a phone, I don't think the size is friendly enough for this tablet to be used as your main phone. Maybe as a secondary phone, definitely not as your primary phone. It doesn't have a phone speaker, thus you use it like you use speakerphone. of course earphone (and blue tooth? never tried it) is an option.
Portability wise, for me it's a bit too big to be carried comfortably inside a pocket (it does fit nicely into the back pocket, but I really don't want to sit while it is in my back pocket). I usually use a small bag to carry it around.
Of course I am not going to stick a 7" tablet in my face to speak and of course I will use a hands-free set (I am used to it, since my wildfire voice speaker is crap and I don't hear sh*t if I am outside).
With mediapad, fact is that it offers the performance of a high end phone in a much much lower price, and since I can choose it as a gift, I consider it very seriously...
But the big question is, will it last for let's say 2-3 years? I mean I don't want to get full of problems with it after 1,5 year making it nearly unusable like my wf is now.
An other question... Is it possible in HC to use it as phone? I know that it hasn't any dialer in it, but is it possible to speak using a dialer like ExDialer or TouchPal?
I heard you can downlad phone.apk and install..
just like that?

Yes. Or you can install ICS rom which has built in dialer.
