Disable the camera? - HTC Startrek

I have a Cingular 3125. I'm changing jobs, and the new one does not allow camera phones. I don't use the camera, anyway. They say it's OK if the camera is present but disabled, but physically covering the lens is not (even though I think sandpaper would do a pretty good job of making it useless).
Is there an easy way to disable the camera (both camera button and the apps) that will survive a reset? Hopefully, something as simple as a registry and menu edit (OK, I could undo that, but they won't know that) or a CAB to load. Changing to another version of the ROM is an acceptible option, but I'm not really one for cooking my own ROM and I've not seen any 6.x ROMs for the 3100 (camera-less 3125) or ones that list no camera function.
Found some messages from folks who lost and wanted to regain the camera function but nothing the opposite or even a clue as to what unintentionally disabled the camera so I could do the same intentionally.

you can replace the Short_Camera.lnk (and maybe the Long_Camera.lnk) in the windows directory with a shortcut that points to another app. This would stop the camera button from starting the camera app, but it wont totally disable the camera, as you can still manually launch the camera app.
Your other option would be of course to physically disable the camera. Its just plugged in to you can remove the actual camera.

just delete a registry key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\Camera]
and reboot

Wouldn't let me delete the key, but changing the Dll REG_SZ to nothing or an illegal name seems to do it. Camera button now brings up "Pictures & Videos" and both the Video Recorder and Camera apps fail to work. I thought changing SensorType from 1 to 0 would do it, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
Thanks for the speedy reply. Might have found it by myself, but wouldn't have known not to mess with the other Camera keys.

Hoping Erofich's solution is good enough for them. Don't want to go that far, but will if it's the only way to keep my precious 3125.

I'm not sure how an easily reversed registry-edit would by sufficient if sandpapering the lens isn't.
Physically removing the camera isn't that hard to do, there is an instruction on how to disassemble the phone here with pictures:
http://www.modaco.com/content/strtr...sembling-htc-strtrk-8500-s300-f600-smartflip/
Taking the camera out really shouldn't be too tricky, here is picture of it:
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=19448
You could probably also just put a little bit of tape over the camera and then close the phone back up, which would be the least destructive way of disabling the camera with it being sufficiently hard to re-enable for a reasonable employer.

[HOWTO]Enable Photo Capture with ZOOM in New Elfin Camera

Hey Guys,
Although i know that this could also be told in some other thread also, i thought it wont be noticed by many if i do so. So I decided to make a new thread.
As many of you know that some times ago, our beloved Ankit360 shared the Elfin Camera OEM with us and from that time almost all the ROMs created by ME and Ankit have this camera.
Now one of the shortcomings of this camera oem is that it doesn't supports photo capture while zooming in normal picture mode although it seems to be supported, but the taken pictures were not saved. With the original camera also this was not possible in normal mode but there was a workaround to use the Burst mode for that. But the new camera misses the burst mode too so that is a big trouble.
The tweak i am talking about here will enable the Burst Mode which doesn't actually works like burst mode ( or i may not know how to use it properly) but it does let you save pictures taken while zooming with the camera.
So here it is :
Take any registry editor, like the DotFred's task manager's regedit, and navigate to :
Code:
[B][HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\Camera\P6] [/B]
and here change the value of Enable to 1. Create the value as a DWROD is its not present already.
Thats it, you'll have a new mode in the camera.
Thanks for Karan999 for sharing with me the diamond tweaks page which lists this tweak.
thanks for tweak :>
Thanks a million for the tweak
@Ankit and Addicted: My Pleasure Actually i was playing around with registry and i found this and suddenly, by chance, karan999 sent me the link to this same thing I felt sort of weired
i try out this it's not at working
How come man, its working for me completly fine. Do it, then a soft reset and then look at the camera, go to its controls, click the button in the bottom-middle of the screen and choose Burst Mode. Then try zooming and taking pictures. In normal mode it will not save the picture as before. You have to go into Burst Mode.
whos piks did u zoom
hi
i can guess whos piks u zoomed in on
any way i have not tried this as i really don't use the camera at all and im getting real busy after a long time

Can anyone please provide me a registry editor software?
From your signature it seems like you are using my 6.5 ROM, there is a utility in it called TaskManager2, it is actually the DotFred's task manager that i have talked about in post no 1. so just start it, goto the Regedit tab and do the needful.

wat u said did work and i took a bust pik naturally of my lovely wife
but it took like 20piks really man i counted 20 piks wat went wrong and how do i fix it

Thanks a million Krazy!!!
Ya, i am too searching for some another tweak for that. Actually untill i didn't touch settings of camera, it was taking one pic only. But after i touched settings, it is now taking 20 pics in a row. Although this is what the Burst mode is for , but lets see if it can be controlled
got temp solution for this
hi
this is wat i did when i clicked in bust mode i pressed the navigation(silver key in the middle of the phone) key and it stopped at around 3 piks
so may be u can try this as temp solution for now try it

Camera Button

So, I double checked, and several reviews out on the webs noted the ability to use the camera button to activate the camera (even while locked?) and start taking pictures instantly without the need to use the power button. Since unboxing and setting up my phone I have been unable to duplicate this, and I must say it was a feature I was strongly looking forward to.
Anyone attempted this and have success? Is there an option somewhere to enable the ability to do this?
Thanks in advance! Happy unboxing day!

From what I read, you have to unlock it first. D:
If you have the camera on the shortcuts bar then sliding that to the unlock circle will bring up the camera. To access the gallery or home screen it will require you to unlock(face, pattern, pin, ect..)
backedc4 is right, if you have it on the lock screen shortcuts, just slide it open directly. anything else will require an unlock first.
from whatever you are doing with it once unlocked though, just long-press the camera button (all the way down) and it'll bring up the camera.
---
i thought it would be a gimmicky thing, but that long camera-button press rapid-shot photo capture is freaking awesome. i dont know how i ever took decent pictures before!!
Yeah, I knew about that, but I am sad to find out that the claims reviewed online are not holding true. Namely "For starters, that dedicated button lets you access the camera functionality with the phone switched off." (http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/04/htc-evo-4g-lte-preview-video/)
However, upon further research Cnet had the issue as well (http://reviews.cnet.com/smartphones/htc-evo-4g-lte/4505-6452_7-35182267.html) so it would appear moot. Blah! This is most certainly a feature I would like to show up in rooted versions tho, hah
Are we talking screen or security lock here? I'd say if you have a security lock you would not want to be able to bypass it for the camera. Once in the camera all of the photos you have taken are visible. As for screen lock I agree you should be able to bypass it.
hey, it does that if you take off locking
I remember tech blogs complaining about the amount of time they had to hold down the button to activate the camera, but I like it. I find myself accidentally pressing it a bit whenever I try to stretch my right hand up the screen. If it activated on every little press, that'd be really annoying. I haven't gotten to open from the lockscreen though (I have a pattern unlock)... But I don't mind that at all either.

Thanks for the tip. Now I can get into the camera app from where ever I'm at by just holding down the camera button for a few seconds. I love having a dedicated camera button.
I saw it in the reviews, too. Also I saw another thread where it's mentioned. Have you guys tried (while screen off/locked) just holding the button down for about 5sec?

Yeah, no go sadly. It's not that big of an issue to use the shortcut bar from the lockscreen, it really only adds a slight extra motion / time frame, but hey, I had to ask to see if anyone knew different!
I was able to access the camera via the dedicated button while the screen was locked for the first day or two, but at some point it has ceased to work. I have gone through every settings menu I could find to see if I made a change somewhere but have yet to find a reason. It was an awesome feature and I want it back.
I've also noticed various small things different from the first day or two, and I haven't rooted or made significant changes. I get the gut feeling this thing is getting secret silent background updates from either htc or sprint. not happy and worried about rooting because of ths...
anyone know how to check or monitor this??
Whoa the above 2 posts are pretty nuts! Completely silent updates could be quite annoying for people running rooted devices.
exactly, has me worried. I'll start another post about it later

It is possible to access the camera without typing pin to unlock phone?

Hi,
I have been looking this for long time. So it is possible to access the camera without typing pin to unlock phone?
Because WP7.5 and iOS can handle this but why not Android?
My HTC One X has this. Can use volume keys (i think it's volume keys anyway) to get camera and choice on my xoom to have various apps icons on lock screen. I had the camera taking photos via lock screen on my phone last night until I changed it. I think it was volume keys, I was pretty worn out from insomnia and fumbling the phone when picking it up to use it to pass time while not being able to sleep from pain induced insomnia.

Hmm... I am not sure are we talking same issue... I mean if I want to take picture with camera. I have put that Camera-icon on Lock Screen but if i chose that I need first but pin-code and after that i can take pictures.

That is not the answer because if I make that nice smart move to activate Camera. It still ask first my pin-code and after that opens Camera.
So Android can't handle Camera in sandbox mode?
Has anyone found a solution?
i would like to know the answer to this also was a handy feature on the Iphone for sure
Don't think there's a way to do this. The point of the pin is so no one can access any function of the phone without the pin. AFAIK there isn't a mod that bypasses this

Instead of making a new thread i would like to ask is there any update to this?
I know the htc phones are able to do this by dragging the camera to unlock it.
But if someone can develop this for the S3.
I know some people have played around with Sense 4.0 with s3 its still glitchy.
The main reason i want this is so i can take pictures and video immediately instead of having to put my 8 character password in and if there something interesting to record such as a dispute or police brutality or anything really we can pull out and record for future use.
Thanks for reading hopefully someone out there atleast attempts this to see if there is a solution.

You can bypass the pin and open the camera with Xposed framework and a module.

Do you think we'll ever see camera app like on HTC One X?

Hello.
Love everything about this phone after switching from HTC One X, except for the camera app.
Do you think we could ever get the same functionality as on HTC One X when there are two buttons on screen at all times for video and photos?
Right now we have to switch between the modes, and only if you don't change any settings you have ability snap photos while recording videos. This is so cripple and not user friendly.
Any chances we ever get anything close to HTC One X's camera app? Or is it hardware limitation that would not allow such functionality?
P.S.
What's very annoying to me about SGS3 camera is that every toggle setting require two taps because of useless dropdown menus instead of checkboxes or such...

Coming from an og htc incredible and I also had an incredible 4g for about a week before I exchanged for the S3.
I actually much prefer the one button against the two. I find that when you ask others to take a photo of yourself and some friends, there's a lot less confusion when someone else is using your phone. I really find that to be the hugest plus.
Well, apparently your main concern is what others think about YOUR phone, not how it's useful/efficient for you (no offense)
From my experience, 99% people asking what to press when I ask them to take a picture, regardless if there are one button or two...
Right now the camera remembers which mode was last used, which might not only confuse, but also can take a few extra seconds before you be able snap a pic.
I would say the first step is to post in the HTC phone's section, and ask someone to post up the camera apk file, and then see if it can be renamed, then placed in /data/app and launched.
If it launches and works, request solved, if it doesn't, you know that additional files will need ported, and it will probably not be as easy a thing to do.
The one thing that annoys me about the stock camers app is this:
When you open the camera app, you can change the 4 shortcuts on the left side of the screen to other options which is awesome. The problem is that the shortcuts always reset to the default everytime you shut down & reopen the app.
I've tried that, it would FC after a second or two.
It probably would be easier build from scratch rather then try port anything HTC...

General GSI for our phone Corvus OS

So here's a ROM that i would recommend even tho it's in beta Corvus OS it's android 12 and everything works even the Camera but sadly not the greatness of Sony's Camera app...i personally haven't tried it with the Custom Kernel Kirisakura just yet but i will and report back on here if they place nice together...Magisk also works great with this ROM you just have to be careful what you flash...
Hopefully our device will be fully supported soon.
Just putting down some thoughts here.
Double tap to wake is borked, the setting already hints that it is unlikely to work and I can confirm this.
Forcing native res works rather poorly. On reboot I need to reset the dpi to make the GUI play nice, but some things remain iffy. Such as:
Gesture navigation still thinks preview windows should be the lower res, not native (looks poor, see attached images)
Some random visual glitches that cause a silent crash + restore, it's not critical but you can see it happening
No built-in battery health (as in limiting it), have to use something external (AccA)
Camera quality is way worse compared to stock. I don't mind as much as I don't care a lot, but quality regression is very significant (if I have to quantify it, I would accept 20-30%, but this feels more like 60%)
The GCAM's I've found that don't immediately crash (not many) all have serious bugs
No camera app found that plays nice with front camera, hope you weren't planning on taking pictures with the front camera
Edit: For 6 you can actually use the native app. Performance is super bad though.
To not sound too much like a downer I'll also put in some "niceties" compared to stock.
Holding volume button to seek is now native
OTA work again
Good visual eyecandy for charging, locking and more
No bloatware galore
Much much finer control over lots of little things, especially status bar is very nice
Other things:
The default launcher is a bit lacking, so I installed Nova 7, but this still has some shenanigans with force reloading and short unresponsiveness with gesture navigation. Very annoying, but I'm quite sure this is not the fault of the ROM. Just hoped this was improved (suggestions welcome)
If someone found a good GCAM please share, the ones I've found are either broken or seriously lacking.
It seems that sometimes the phone does not respond to my finger until I press the button. This could be intentional to prevent accidental unlocks / phone being locked for X seconds because lots of "bad" fingerprints detected.

Yeah, this is why I've been very hesitant to install to install GSI ROMs, all the issues I've mentioned are because the X1 III is not the same as most other devices.
Wake to tap? Device specific thing.
Native res issues? X1III specific.
No built in battery health? Not device specific, devs pls
Camera issues? Device specific.
I think I'll drop the higher res as that will remove the most jarring of issues. The camera is whatever as it will not improve by switching to PE and double tap to wake is meh. Annoying at worst.

Alright some more shenanigans and needing to do a clean install further I do know some more things now.
1. is still broken, I'll try flashing a different kernel perhaps.
2. It's actually not so bad. It will remember and auto apply on reboot after a couple seconds. Gesture and notification bar may be slightly borked, but that's fixed fast by reloading system UI and switching between gesture and button navigation. The thing about recents has been resolved by switching to a different launcher with it's own quickswitch (lawnchair).
3. Acca works fine.
4/5/6 Nothing.
Another update.
2 is fine. Just don't use the built in launcher while forcing 4k. Just use lawnchair or something (+ quickswitch).
On another note, automatic brightness does NOT appear to work. This is quite the massive issue. I'm honestly a bit baffled how I haven't noticed until today.
AOD is also quite broken, while the phone is on the wireless charging and being ratiod to 90% it will continously blink. That's super annoying as I normally use AOD to check if I got a message, if it blinks it takes my attention, effectively defeating the entire purpose of AOD. *Groan*
These issues are really starting to stack up by now, I'm seriously considering reverting to stock. I'm really worried something else won't be working once I need it in the future.

It's available in stock but it has never worked correctly. The proximity sensor doesn't disable it! There's a "Prevent accidental operations with screen off" setting as the world's dumbest work-around. That puts a keyboard and alert on the screen while you're walking. It stops emergency butt-dialing but the battery still runs down.

A what now? I do recall the proximity sensor not working really well with dt2w but at least it worked and I didn't notice some significant battery drain.
I did see some things about dt2w being disabled because the touch interface is powered when the screen is powered and this can't be decoupled. I'm not sure if this applies to this phone though.
Regardless, it shouldn't really matter as the X1 III is an OLED screen anyways. So as long as it's full black it should be fine(?)
I'm not asking for the perfect solution and if battery drain slightly increases that's a worthwhile investment to me. At least provide the option. Don't decide what I want because it has potential side-effects (just warn or something lol).
Actually I'm going out on a limb and stating that dt2w should be enabled by default if the device's screen is an OLED screen. Overlay and device specific things be damned.
