I miss the speed dial shortcuts - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Flashed to WM6.5 in an apparently futile quest to resolve my wifi connectivity issues. Now I'm trying to get used to the new UI. It's fine, but I'm missing one feature on the phone: It used to be that within the Phone application, hitting up on the D-pad would bring up Speed Dial, then you could hit the D-pad up or down to get to the number you want, and then hit the middle of the D-pad to dial. Made for nice eyes-free dialing. How do I replicate that feature?

iconsoft phonex has an even quicker option of favorites
it also has a fairly simple speed dial using the pad
comes with a today plugin w/ row of quick opening buttons:
favorites, messaging, phone pad, comm manager, ring/vibe selector
favs, comm & selector all slide open right on the today screen
making calls to my favorites has never been quicker or easier

this is the favorite people app for win 6.5 and you can use the dpad for dialing

Thanks for your replies. What I'm looking for is fast, eyes-free dialing. Under WM5 and WM6, I used a program called Smartskey. It remapped the function of the d-pad within the default Phone application, so that hitting Up brought up your speed dials and Down brought up the call history. I found my old copy of smartskey 0.6 archived on my PC and installed it on my new WM6.5, but it appears that those d-pad remappings aren't working.
I downloaded and installed the demo for phonex. It's quite nice, thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, the today shortcuts aren't as useful under Titanium, which is what I'm trying to run.
I may resort to that Favorite People app, but if possible I'd rather find a way to replicate the old smartskey functionality -- habits are hard to break.

Rotate your WM2003SE screen from start menu.

For all of those who are now running SE thanks to dcs and others. Just download this little app, unzip it, run setup when connected via activesync and then add it to your start menu. Works like a charm and saves having to hard map a button to rotate your screen we are already limited to buttons as it is. I just put it at the top of my start menu and can use from any application of course. Thank you guys for all of your hard work.
not bad at all. but what i did was use phm plus; it gives you the short cut icons to the items in the settings folder (like bt, clock, input, etc). in this case i copied the "screen" shortcut and had it appear in the today screen using tdlaunch. just click on the icon and the option for landscape or portrait comes up.
cheers
thanks .. that was a very nice utility ..
Cool, another way is to assign it a hardware button, very easy t flip on the fly.
RE
Hi ZeroXtreme!
If you'll to assign the RotateSE to a hardware button its slower than the default Rotate Screen because of the rotating circle.
I think creating a shotcut on the Today screen launcher program is still a better choice and it can also relieves one of the hardware buttons for other use.
Thnx
Works as intended...
thats weird :? ...
does'nt WM2003SE has a <Rotate Screen> at "Assign a program:" list in Buttons section ?! :?:
in my i-mate JAM i can rotate the screen between 'Portrait' and 'Landscape(right-handed)' by pressing "Record" button
i wonder if xda2 wm2003se has it or not, coz mine gone junk while i'm upgrading to chines rom SE
later 8)
@NightmarE
Yes, it does have the hardware button assignment, the problem is that most of us have already used all the hardware buttons for other tasks, so a Start menu option is a nice solution...
I agree I have upgraded to the blue angel but having it in the start menu is much better than hardmapping it to a button, I posted the app for those who want a different option, if you want to waste a button on just rotation then be my guest but some of like myself don't use screen rotation that often then it is better in the start menu and not on a button that I need, considering I use alot of apps like Microsoft Voice Command.
It os better to have it in the Start Menu than in a Today Screen, if you are in the middle of a app it is easier to just open the Start Menu and rotate than go through settings->screen or close then today then back to the app...
I'm using SPB Pocket Plus and add "rotate screen to the right" to close/minimize dialog ... That's just how I do it. Free Up start menu slot for my other frequently used apps.
Right now I'm quite a happy XDA2 user
use PHM utility to add a shortcut of RotatSE in Task bar near by bluetooth icon it will be like i-mate Jam icon 8) ...
laters
I assinged one hardware button to flip the screenand made the flipting system easily and fast...
Works great on the Treo 700wx. Thanks!
Hi, is ROM version 1.66.00WWE a wm2003SE?
Just tried the software a while ago but it didn't work.
Is there a version of this working on wm2003? just found out that my phone is not wm2003SE version but a wm2003, software not compatible with wm2003. :c
Works ok, but...
Hi.
It works fine, but how I configure it to rotate to the other side (clockwise) ??
Thanks in advance,
Joe

Help: Need to remove "hide keypad" from phone app

I've noticed on the newer based rom kitchens the left soft key function in phone app of "contacts" is gone and replaced by "hide keypad". How can I modify the .sys or to restore it to "contacts" so I can scroll through my contact using my preferred app of random access. Also when used with M2D you lose the today screen contact tab as well making it very difficult to get easy access to contacts. I know you can press the hide keypad and it shows the recent calls and contacts but I hate using it that way and prefer the old contact left soft key. I have two phones afflicted by this a titan running dcd 3.26 and a vogue running a base of 20748. I use the touch and vogue dialers and on older based rom the hide keypad wasn't there but is on new ones using the same dialers. I'm asking here as I have received no useful answer at ppcgeeks.
Hi drellisdee,
The reason the left soft key no longer bring up "true" contacts is due to the switch to a touch dialer. The touch dialer incorporates "smart dialing" which allows you to spell out the contacts name using the onscreen dial pad. Once you get this down you will no longer want the old method.

You can do that with the MR1 dialier, which has left softbutton as "contacts". I don't think the two features are directly related.
Tried using different dialers and my conclusion is that its the .sys not smart dialing nor the dialers as I tried making roms with and without smart dialing and used several different dialers the true touch one and then the old one from the ppc kitchen from 10/07 which would show the contacts tab on a older .sys base rom. I tried using the phone.dll and the phone redist from an older pre 20k sys which the same dialer gave the contacts tab and the rom built with no error just the phone app would fail to intialize as you couldn't bring up any dial pad.
I actually started thread about this at ppc but it has to do with the fact that all of the diamond sys ports are not true whole sys ports there are some modules in the redist folder in the sys that you have to change and a couple in the baselang folder .... in the past I have done this but here lately I haven't really worried about it .... you could always just find the newest qvga build and port it
Great Post.
That "Hide Keypad" was annoying the sh*t outta me as I couldn't get smartskey to work properly. After reading the thread above it assured me nothing I was doing would get rid of the Hide Keypad option so now I'm living with it.. LoL..

So how do i remove it?
I don't understand what you're saying.
Thanks

Today Page? Sux.

Can I customize this to be identical to my start menu, or at least my action menu? Would make texting a simple "lol" much easier, haha. I spend more time sliding keyboard open and finding buttons and navigating the phone than I do texting. Suppose I could assign a hotkey, but i'd rather have icons on the start screen.
Is it possible to do that?
You can basically do whateeeeever you want for your today screen. There are literally hundreds of different plugins. The simplest (and in my opinion, the most effective) plugin is HTC Home. It's a simple tabbed interface, tap the text button, brings you to your messages. Tap the programs tab, your programs are there... etc. TouchFlo3D and TouchFlo3D2 both take the simplicity away from the today screen, and I think they both suck because of it. You should also try out a WinMo 6.5 rom, they have a revamped start menu (finger friendly!!!) and an all-new today screen plugin that I think brings back some of the simplicity of HTC Home. I see you're using EnergyROM. He released version 3.0, which is 6.5. I like Mystic Series, it's the fastest and smoothest rom I have ever used. (there's supposed to be a new version out today, too!)
Just search for Windows Mobile Today Plugin in google and you will freak out with all the options!

Quick Launcher

Hi guys
I've tried several different ROM's recently but one thing that seems to be missing from them all is Quick Launcher (I think that was what it was called).
Basically I want the phone dialer to open when I slide the keypad out - unless I'm in another application such as SMS or Opera (where I just want to use the keypad for input).
Does anyone know of a CAB or ROM which will do this.
I'd also like something that will show on the top bar when my bluetooth headset is connected (at the moment it only shows when I start to dial) - Again CAB or Rom suggestions?
I've also just loaded this which seems to be a cracking application and well worth a look.

I have gone back to Niki Project Rom Editor v2.1.3 (WWE/ITA/GER/FRE/PTG/ESN )
until I can find something else
Having gone back to the previous ROM I realise it's not quick launcher that I'm after.
Quick Launcher lets you choose New Email, New SMS, New MMS etc which I had disabled before.
This rom does respond immediatly when you start dialing the other 6.5 that I tried didn't - any suggestions??
I simply want to be able to open the H/W keypad and start dialing without a delay or having to press another button first.

How do you default HD2 Phone to show Speed Dial entries?

By default, the phone screen on the HD2 shows all Calls and Contacts. To get to your Speed Dial entries, you must hit Menu->View->Speed Dial. Not the speediest of things, and defeats the purpose of a "speed dial".
Does anyone know of a regedit to default the selection to "Speed Dial" rather than "Calls and Contacts"?
I couldn't find an answer in these forums, although I saw a few others asked the same thing... one poster referred me to co0kies home tab (which I use), but couldn't find any reference/solution to my dilemma.
Any one have a suggestion/answer?
Thanks!
I dont know if its possible to default the screen to speed dial, but the next best suggestion i can offer is setting up your home screen to your contacts there instead. if you dont have enough icons u can always use CHT to get more.

I use CHT and have a link to Contacts, but it would be really nice to have "Speed Dial" work as a one-button (or minimal keystroke) solution to frequently called numbers. Of course voice command helps too, but the Speed dial is a really nice feature I miss from the "stock" WM Dialer.
CHT even give you an avatar, only one click, instead of run phone panel first.
I think WM's speed dial is no way better than that...
By the way, the really fast way to active spead dial, which also worked on original WM dialer, is to keep the related botton on the dialer pressed for about one second, and there it goes. For e.g. keep "1" pressed to call your voice mailbox.

I just checked out the CHT shortcut you mentioned. Works great... I must have overlooked the ability to shortcut a "contact". Also, just checked out the "number long-press"... also a feature I wasn't aware of (I knew it was supported in WM 6.0 but didn't even think to try it in 6.5).
Anyway, now for curiosity sake, I'm still interested to find out where in the registry (if at all), the HTC dialer stores the default selection.
Thanks for the tips.
