Anyway to turn off fullscreen browsing? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like being able to look at my taskbar when browsing. Anyway to turn off fullscreen browsing?

With you on that one there! Love the fact you get maximum webpage space but just a little bar at the top would be nice, also would enable you to check and respond to notifications without closing the page.

I would like to know if there is a way too ...

anyone figure out a way?

I don't think there is a way to do it with the built in browser which is a bit rubbish really.
An alternative would be to get another browser such as Steel off of the Market but it doesn't feel polished enough to replace the default one to me. Hopefully Opera Mobile is nice when that arrives

What dont you like about the built in one that Opera does better?

I want to see the notification bar as well. I would love to see what's going on on my device while I'm browsing. Now I am forced to close the browser first.
I just tried Steel, but I really miss the multitouch zoom. I'm afraid I'll have to stick with the built-in browser.

I want this too! If only to see my reception / H / E /wifi logo etc just to know how I am connected! Oh and the time

Could someone post an apk with Android's default browser? Maybe if we ask in another sub-forum?

What do you hate the most about touchwiz?

Feel free to release your hate for touchwiz, i know we can use other apps to "fix" our phones but there's not an easy solution for everythin, gwhat are the things that you hate the most about it? In my opinion:
1.The lockscreen: Even tough i like the slider for received sms or missed calls i find it ridiculous, its slow and unpractical, you have to drag the wallpaper through 70% to unlock the phone
2.The launcher: its not that bad, but it is NOT smooth while flicking through the homescreens
3.The cheesy blue font, really samsung? a blue font in menus?
4.The messaging app: again the blue font, and the app it's just an iphone ripoff
5.The dialer/contacts: looks ugly and the image for the contacts its streched :/
6. Autobrightness also in the browser? huh? why?
7. Gallery on drugs? Its all sped up and is not overly responsive
8. No "," on the keyboard ( you have to switch to the special characters)
9. No option to deactivate just the keyboard vibration, in order to do it you must deactivate the vibration on the capacitive buttons too
10. Icons are really ugly
11. Hubs are pointless, the only non disposable one is the game hub
12. Samsung apps are horrendous, has someone download something useful from there?
13. No music widget? um why? i know there's a "shortcut" on the notification but a widget would have been nice
14. No text reflow on the browser
I should also mention that the camera app is better than stock android and i also like the way you change the wallpaper and add widgets, the browser is really smooth , is it true it has hardware
acceleration?
I know gingerbread is fugly but starting from ice cream sandwich just stick to making amazing hardware samsung
1. Normal Android and iOS, you have to drag an a thumb size **** for entire screen rather than anywhere of the screen, seems more hard to me.
2. Same on all androids... Try HTC next time.
3. Where did you get blue fonts? I don't see them
8. *cough* I have "." on keyboard. Do you by any chance use another launcher?
14. Actually text reflows on mine, and it is not TW launcher, it is android
Seriously dude, rest are just "objective" rather than facts.
I like TW and it is lighter than any other "default" launchers on rest of Android devices. Even sense on my friend's HTC's feels slow.
I hope Samsung does not give us butt-naked Android UI for ICS... TW4 is next best thing in Android other than core underground.
Please read why rest of Tech-editor hates Android's UI's, since I did not see much using SGS2... Beside it is not like Samsung locked you to use it. There are too many launchers out there...
I think TW is a good solid launcher. I dont use TW daily, but i dont agree with 90% of your points.
Same as the above poster really. i dont have blue fonts and also have a "." on the keyboard.
I'd strongly have to disagree with the not smooth on the home screens. Mine is seriously nippy.
Probably the only reason i dont use it is that i like to change my icons, so i will give you that one.
The stretching in the dial can be fixed by using a picture with the correct resoultion.

Touch wiz is too good to be criticised. Okay, some glitches but then nothing is perfect. It's so light and IMO it is awesome.

Doesn't work at all for me, at least not the free version.
The deleted apps leaving holes in the app tray bugs me too.

I agree 100% with everything! But you forgot the most annoying thing of all. The king of all annoyances! The child of Annoying Orange and Fred! The 100% battery charge notification!!! Who in their right mind would not think of including an option to turn it off?!
In all fairness, most of these issues (including the ball on leg on a hot summer's day battery notification) can be solved through different apps. But why should I?
edit: forgot to add that there is no stock android music widget (or any at all) in the widget list
i just love touchwiz no complains

i heard that touchwiz will be updated to have 3*3 icons due to apple patent infringement.
and i heard that galaxy s will have ics without touchwiz like galaxy nexus.
i hope galaxy s2 get a non touchwiz ics update
1. Is it SO hard to move your finger two centimeters on any direction? Try other phones (HTC, Nexus).
2. Yes, it's quite good for most people. I don't really like it and i use Adw Launcher Ex. There's a lot free alternatives too.
3. What's wrong with these fonts? Are you aware of "Themes" section on this forum?
4. Yes, i totally agree on that one. It's an ifone rip off. On older ROMs at least we had an option to change theme, now it's gone. The only thing that really bugs me so much.
5. Pictures are fine for me and dialer app too. Would love to have an option to jump straight into favorites, instead of all contacts, though.
6. Yes and i love it! BTW, you can click "Menu" and disable it in no time.
7. That's slightly modded stock Android gallery and it's performance depends on amount of media files you have. Also, i guess you have some cheap class 2 SD card. And again, you can use QuickPic from Market, it's free and very fast.
8. I guess you meant "," not "." Yes, that's why i use Gingerbread Keyboard. Again, free on Market.
9. There's is an option to deactivate vibration for keyboard only. Settings - Language and keyboard - Samsung keyboard.
10. Personaly i love every single of them. Again, you can change any icon on this phone the way YOU like. It's Android
11-13 BS. Don't like them - don't use. Simple as that. And try some HTC phone and you will be surprised to find about 20 times more of bloatware.
14. Open browser - settings - auto-fit pages.
As i can see, you don't like every single bit on this phone. Why did you buy it? There's a good bunch of other phones.
And one tip: learn to use your phone, before blaming Samsung
I agree with some of your points, OP.
But the BIGGEST thing (at least in my experience) was how crappy Touchwiz performed compared to AOSP. Again, this is at least in my experience.
I hear good things about TW4 though.... I hope it's true!

Sorry, but I'm not seeing anything other than opinion. The vast majority of people actually really like TW on the S2, rating it higher than the other launchers. As for Sense, that's just another Launcher. You may as well start a thread for your favourite word processor, stating how it's better than the others, and then one explaining why you really like a certain art package or database app.
So you prefer Sense to TW. You should have a HTC phone then, not a Samsung one.

[APP] Boat Browser - browse the web like a Boss

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.boatbrowser.free
Simply awesome browser.
It handles extremely heavy Flash websites like Grooveshark like a boss. It's smooth, handles multiple pages well, handles annoying popups well (!) without going ape****. It inherently knows keyboard shortcuts like "CTRL+A" when selecting all the text in a text box. Knows CTRL+C, CTRL+X, CTRL+V. It does *not* know CTRL+F to find, you have to click through to find text, which is one of the very few minor downsides.
It's smooth, elegant... like Chrome for your desktop, except it's for your Prime.
Enable Desktop User Agent mode in the settings and play around with Flash settings til it works for your needs. But it will handle *almost* any flash website you browse regularly, bar none.

Please give a bluntly honest review - perfect/great stuff & the ugly - I have a feeling the "ugly" stuff would probably get fixed pretty quickly.
I would give an honest review, but I'm on cloud 9 with this browser currently so I'm currently incapacitated

this is a great browser. my only gripe with it is that it takes forever to get back into it from the recent tasks bar. other than that, its just as smooth as opera and it plays flash.

Same here. Made a folder called Browsers. This boat browser is really nice. Only thing is the quick settings and taskbar options n everything all over the place. You have to get use to it. I like that it lets you customize the quick setting on the tasknar at the bottom.
ANYONE know how to transfer bookmarks from opera mobile?
looks and feels great, but lacks keyboard shortcuts like ctrl t, ctrl w, ctrl tab and etc. So its not that easy to use while docked (most of time for me). otherwise pretty damn solid browser
Nice! Thanks for the heads up.
My only tiny gripe is that panning while loading is still a little jittery. Dolphin is the smoothest when loading but Boat"s flash prowess might make it my browser of choice.

Very nice browser. I like it. Doesn't seem very fast, but has been stable and nice to use.

My Note can't decide if it's a tablet or a phone

does it seem to you too that the note has identity issues? When I visit web sites with my captivate and double tap the screen the font enlarges to a readable size. with this phone this behavior is unpredictable. Any ideas as to what my phone is going thru and would therapy be in order or is it just growing pains and give it some time?
What browser are you using? I'm using Opera, and double tap consistently zooms in for me.

I agree with you about the lag on Dolphin browser. Although it has more functionality the stock browser is much smoother. I did a simple test between Opera, Dolphin HD, Boat, OverSkreen and Stock and I found that Stock, Opera, Boat and OverSkreen were the only satisfyingly fast ones. Opera is very fast but I find I don't like it's functionality. OverSkreen is fantastic but honestly feels more gimmicky to me at the moment as I haven't found a good use for multiple browsers simultaneously. At the moment I've been using Boat browser which has been to me the best mix of functionality and snapiness. It has a really customizable tool bar and lots of quick buttons so I would suggest it to you.

Then that's the answer for Op statement??(question) in the title
Using Dolphin: I have the user agent set to desktop and I dont use any plugins and it runs about as smoothly as the stock browser (which is to say, it isnt fantastically smooth but it isnt unusable either).
However, I also hadnt rebooted the phone in three weeks either so I decided to do so now and just tested again with www.cnn.com with both the stock browser and Dolphin and it is MUCH smoother after a reboot (again, both are about the same).
My phone is stock unrooted.
To help the stock browser perform more like a tablet however, I do the following on every new Android device I get...
Open the stock browser.
Hit the menu button.
Tap Settings.
Tap the 'Auto Fit Pages' option.
I also UNcheck the option 'Load Images' (to make pages load faster - not related to making the browser work more like a tablet but Im mentioning it in case people find it useful).
You could also change the zoom level (the top most option) to far instead of the default medium zoom level - just be warned that this will make the text on web pages small - possibly too small for some people.
Can you give a specific website that you are double tapping on that is giving the response you are talking about? Every page Im going to with the default browser is taking me to a mobile web page which has nothing to double click on.

[Q] Any idea if the following annoyances of SII are fixed in SIII

cannot scroll to next month, etc in calendar widget
Picture taken by camera has nothing to do with what you see on screen

the issues with text reflow arent an SGS issue, its an apk issue. the default browser just blows.. why are you using it anyway? Dolphin or Opera are the way to go man. and Opera Mobile has flawless text reflow
sorry the calender app is sucking for you, this one IS samsungs fault, maybe theyll fix it on the SIII, but you could always try a new calender app from the market.
pictures taken by camera has nothing to do with what you see on screen, [email protected] yes this is fixed, its called "ZERO SHUTTER LAG" and it makes me veryyyy happy. what you see on screen when you snap a picture is exactly what youll see when you take a picture.
HOWEVERRRR, if you want a fix for your S2 right now, i got one. download Fast Burst camera app from the market, it can take like 20 pictures a second, and what you see IS what you get. rapidly snap the shutter button, or hold it down for a DSLR machine gun sounding shutter attack haha, this is the camera you wanna use to catch fast shots, like your dog jumping, or someone flipping a coin. things beast

Yeah, but what annoys me is that HTC phones have a great stock browser *with text reflow* and the calendar is brilliant.
Surely Samsung should address this usability issues before getting on the flashy gestures functionalities...
Also remember that Dolphin recorded and sent to the mothership the list of web sites you visited. They allegedly "corrected" that. But after such a security blunder I will never use their products again...

The text reflow in stock browser was a setting you can change. If you go to your settings, there should be a "Auto-fit pages" that's unchecked by default (at least for Samsung ROMs). I think by default, it's checked for other phones/ROMs.
I haven't flashed my SGSII with the Samsung stock ICS ROM, so I can't speak to that... but it's there for all of the Gingerbread Samsung ROMs I had. (I'm currently on CM9).
I can flash back to a Samsung ICS ROM to verify.
UPDATE: I'm on the stock SGS2 ICS TW ROM, and verified: In the browser, hit the menu button, Settings, Advanced, Auto-fit pages. That will control if the text reflows or not.
Now the thing that irks me on SGSII (again with Gingerbread Samsung ROMs) is there's no touch-to-focus while taking a video. The HTC One X/S, iPhone, and Moto Razr has this feature, so not sure why Samsung left it out. I hope they put it in the SGS3 TW ROM.
It irks me that it's not in the Google stock ICS builds (CM9, built from source, GNex, etc). This is, of course, a problem stemmed from Google's own source code. All those nice features (pano, snapshot while videoing, but no touch-focus while videoing).
The video autofocus is not reliable.

That option switches on text reflow only when you double tap to zoom. There is still no text reflow on pinch-to-zoom.
It's quite annoying when browsing forums and in general sites with lots of text content
I'll try Quick ICS, it sounds promising.
The thing is, I wanna get a SIII but I have to admit that between Sensation and SII the user experience for me was better on the sensation, it just felt tighter. It's the small things... I'll have a play as soon as it hits the shops!

Ah, I see. You're correct on that. Is this behavior also on the Chrome browser?

Is the reader option a touchwiz or an android thing?

I love the option on the browser that when you get to a page, you can click the green r button on the top bar and it'll organize the page so it'll be easier to read. I'm just curious if I'll lose it if I switch to a non touch wiz Rom. If it is a touch wiz thing, can anyone recommend an aftermarket browser that also does this?

It's a TouchWiz thing. I had to actually go see what the F you were talking about because I had not seen it before... I'm using chrome, not the stock browser, but I used the stock ICS browser on my HTC Incredible (running ICS, of course) before I got my SGSIII, and I know it wasn't there.
I can't recommend an alternative though. Sorry
I tried searching for even the name of that option and it doesn't show up anywhere. I know that the iPhone (ugh) also has this option and its called reader in ours browser but I can't seem to find the android alternative. Hopefully someone spots this within the million posts and can help out. Thanks for the help though
