I got my HTC Hero on Orange in the UK last week.
I am getting an issue where a normally stable wireless network will be knocked out if i connect the Hero on Wifi.
I know its not the radio - connects fine on WEP secured work network and on the open connection on the train and at McDs
I have done a fair bit of googling and RTFM and basically found lots of router specific issues on Android phones but nothing that looks like the same issue i have encountered except one on the Android community forum where no one has a solution or suggestion i havent already tried.
XDA developers was a great help with unlocking and flashing a ROM to my Trion so i thought i would amend the post i made there and see if i get any more expert opinion on here. Apologies for the length of the post - will post ROM and build numbers if that helps (and someone tells me where to look on the phone!)
Conscious this is a lenghty post (hello all!) but thought as i struggled to find anything it might help others in the same situation if i detail the issues and what i have looked at and hypothesised that i need to try to resolve this - in case anyone else has similar issues.
Netgear DGFV338 ADSL and Ethernet VPN & Firewall router.
Three wireless laptops and Sony Ericsson G900 all connect fine
Laptops run XP Pro, Windows 7 RC and a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu machine
desktops (all on gigabit backbone) run similar mix but only lose internet after router and modem have borked.
I am running this on a 20 MB Virgin connection which is usually faultless (3 years or so uptime not counting upgrades to the modem). Speed or timeout is not an issue - usually get between 12MB and 17MB DL and 700kbps UL
As soon as i connect with the Hero i can use the Wifi but briefly (one web page, start to load Market etc) - basically network detected and WPA-PSK TKIP connected, IP allocated and showing in wireless clients table of router.
I was running restricted MAC access and IP/MAC binding as i have ports open for the 360's and the Wii and want to restrict access to these devices only but removed this as part of the troubleshooting.
Shortly afterwards 20 seconds to 1 minute after connection the wifi drops - all connections lost, laptops lose connections and i lose connection to Virgin. It requires a full reboot of modem and router with the Hero off to recover a connection.
I wiped the router and all the security and all the other pcs etc work fine
then turn on hero - same story. So its not any of my more esoteric and paranoid router settings - i dont think.
Been on the Netgear forums and apart from some issues with the G1 and AES on home routers (mine is the full enterprise kit metal case) i find nada
Troubleshooting to date has narrowed it down to a couple of choices.
I know my router but i am brand new to this phone so some of this is pure guess work. One suggestion was ARP floods from multiple requests from phone getting it blocked by the firewall. Except traffic logs dont support this
Encryption support:
I use WPA PSK TKIP - this is detected as WPA Personal by the Hero but it can connect to router when i use the pass and this setting so i am working on the basis this is supported and correct.
I have read about issues with poor AES support on some routers which are fixed by a firmware update but have the same issue with other devices on AES so would prefer TKIP. So it could be encryption handling - initial connection works but error logging could crash the router if this is not working correctly
Anybody know if the WPA personal listed for connections is TKIP or AES?
I cant find any clear information on this.
Orange DNS or restricted gateway settings:
This appears to be the main symptom - i lose DNS support and therefore access to the internet. Turning off the Hero and reconnecting the laptop gives me access to the router but i need to reboot the modem to get my IP back (dynamic but changes every 12 months or so) the hypothesis is that the Orange connection in this build has the DNS hardcoded to go through their DNS servers which either Orange or Virgin systems dont like and boots my connection off the internet. Bit of a long shot but as i cant seem to find any way to fix static IP or DNS listings it could be the case as i cant switch to OpenDNS as i would to test this otherwise.
Only comes to mind as the first day with the phone (when Orange 3G was not active) i didnt have this problem - wifi on phone and laptop worked fine and both together
Bit of a longshot but the symptoms point to a DNS corruption if it isnt my router treating repeated WPA or DNS requests as a DOS attack. It could be DHCP creating errors but i can bind a MAC to specific IP to override this on the router. It sees the Hero, recognises the MAC and adds it to the restriction whitelist.
I havent checked ARP logging but that theory could pan out as its unlikely DNS would take down the router and modem - ARP or DOS lockdown could.
WiFi Channel
I run channel 11 due to neighbours wifi interference - Wii wont work at all with default channel.
I cant find the default channel information on the Hero but would assume it is 6 like most devices.
this one is strange - if it is the Wifi Channel then seeing the router should be a problem and connection shouldnt happen at all. It seems unusual to allow a connection but then crash the router as it is getting traffic on a different channel.
Could be another side effect of my routers firewall blocking suspicious traffic but seems unlikely.
As you can see a fair amount of things have been tried and i am still getting nowhere.
I need to try the encryption settings - does anyone know what the WPA setting is on the Hero and which encryption is supported/offered as standard?
I need to try changing my router back to channel 6 - does anyone know the default channel or how to change this in the Hero?
I need to try static rather than DHCP (but on the phone as already have tried forcing IP from router) - how do i get to these settings?
I need to try static DNS rather than Dynamic (router proxy of Virgin DNS)
I do have a Linksys WRT54g (three of them - one vanilla, one Sveasoft and one Tomato) which i use for outside events at work so i could swap one of those in but i suspect its a combination of Hero settings and router settings and i would like to get my main router set up (and keep the 8 ports) than swap back to the older WRTs and have to set up my Xbox 360s to get around the issue they have with being on a switch with a different subnet and not connecting to Windows 7 media centre
Basically i have tried most of the things i can try with the access i have on the phone and my knowledge of its default settings. What apps can i try to give me control of the networking and access section?
Otherwise, loving the phone. Better than the reviews and whilst not lightning fast its a damn sight quicker than an overclocked Trion i was running before (which worked fine on the same router and WPA Personal)
I am liking Android, glad to not be locked into the Apple tax/ecosystem and realising that WinMo has a looong way to come; even with the help HTC and xda developers offer to make better use of the hardware.
But i am heavy internet user and i cannot risk running my Hero at home on 3g when i have 500MB cap and a £3 a MB over limit charge with no notice from Orange to say i am near limits.
Any ideas? feedback? similar tales of woe?
Possible solution
Ohkaaay - found advanced settings so that helped! n00b error
Removed all security.
Changed channel to 6
connects
change to channel 11
connects but crashes router
reboot router and modem
change back to channel 6
change security to WPA Personal AES
connects
doesnt crash router
change to channel 11
connects
doesnt crash router
i appear to have a working connection and there is no way i would have made it through this post with the Hero on before i made these changes
weirdly i now have two identical entries in the wireless networks list
one says SSID_name Connected
two says SSID_name WPA Personal
remove remembered networks
Hero autodetects my SSID_name
sign in with AES password
two listings in wifi list again, same as before.
So it looks like WPA TKIP doesnt work on my router with Hero
AES does.
Channel 6 works with no security
Channel 11 doesnt
BUT... enable AES and Channel 11 works.
Guess the Channel 6 signal issue interferes with the TKIP or something
But i can report that on Netgear router WPA Personal AES works ok, which apparently on the pre-Cupcake G1 was a known issue.
Apologies to post and then reply to my own post but this might help someone
I can confirm your findings regarding WPA + TKIP vs WPA2 + AES.
I was running WPA + TKIP on a Linksys WRT54GX and experienced major connectivity issues with my Hero (although is did not crash the router). Did not experience this problem with my iPhone 3G.
Changed configuration to WPA2 + AES and Hero does now work without any issues.
I know this:
A. Is fairly obvious
and
B. Is not particularly helpful to you
However - if any device (regardless of whether it is buggy or not) is crashing your router, the router clearly has buggy firmware itself and is at fault. Router firmware should be robust to the unexpected, especially on wifi as this could be prone to denial of service attacks from anyone happening to be walking by. A router that is crashed by an attempted client connecting is a bad sign.
My personal advice would be to change to a decent standalone router. I use a Buffalo WHR-G54S flashed with Tomato firmware v1.21.8005 (with a seperate linksys Adsl2+ modem to provide internet). It is working flawlessly for me in WPA + TKIP/AES with no issues.

Hi,
so kernel sources are released. Is there any fix for hero's wifi problems? I mean dropping connection to AP. It is so annoying, I tried to do everything: change channel, mode, encryption... Nothing helped. It is Linksys wrt160nl. The same applies to other networks (some public hot spots).

Could you paste your wifi settings? (mode, encryption mode, channel)
Using the Modaco custom ROM 2.8 (never had problems with modaco ROM and generic)
Router: Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.25 firmware
Wireless Mode: Access Point
B/G Mode: Mixed
Channel: 1 - 2.412 Ghz (try a free one)
Security: WPA / WPA2 Personal
Encryption: AES
Group Key Renewal: 3600 seconds
No Mac Filter
Under Advanced Settings I changed "Transmit Power" to 251mW for a better signal, the rest are default values.
Try to update your router firmware
Are you alone with this problem?

In case you haven't done so yet. Check out the Wifi Sleep Policy (access by pressing menu when you are in wifi menu). Normally the Wifi is turned off then the screen is turned off which can cause problem.
Similar problem with netgear wnr2000

Hi got similar problem with my router netgear wnr2000.what i found funny is that when i reset the router, the phone connects perfectly to the router, but after abt 24hrs or so, it fails to connect.even if i reboot my phone, or reset the connection on phone.fails to connect.it will only connect when i reboot the router. i will try the 'aes' encryption n see if that helps.will update if it works
Thanks for your replies. Please could other members share their experiences, used options and solutions. This issue is too common to simply forget it. I am trying to find some kind of pattern or special options, it requires.
i dont have a problem with wifi apart from the wont find or connect to n-range device other wise i use wifi all the time it never drops, on stock orange uk firmware
I have a Sitecom WL-173 router.
I cannot connect at all. I can, but only with no or WEP security. That is no option for me.
When I use WPA or WPA2 my Hero does view my network, but does not connect.
I called HTC about this problem. He told me that they do not support all routers. He could not tell me which they support and which not.

I also have the same problem. The way to solve it is to change the above setting to 'G' only. Not mixed/Hybrid.

I have not had any problems trying to connect to WiFi networks, until i went over to my mates place where he has the Virgin 50MB B-Band and also a D-Link wifi-N router, and my Hero could no see the network at all, even though his iPhone connected straight away.

I'm sorry, it hurt even more when i was sitting there pissed off that my Hero wouldnt connect to the Wifi!!!
I have Virgin 50meg at home no problem at all, went to my GF's who has basic Virgin cable 10meg on netgear G and would not connect at all.
No idea why, as it should be all fine!
I have the same problem. It is so ****in annoying. My router is a Linksys WRT54G with Tomato firmware v1.25. Router is in "G only mode", WPA-2 PSK-AES security, I've set a static local IP for the phone, the phone's wireless is set to always ON... I basically tried everything I could think of. Ended up rooting the phone and installing Modaco 2.9... but didn't change anything. The only way I can get it work again when it drops is shut the Wi-Fi off then on...
Worst of all this is the problem seems widespread (but not universal)... What the **** does HTC think putting a ****in smartphone on the market with defective Wi-Fi... This is non-sense.
I really hope someone comes up with a fix or HTC updates this... otherwise we might want to start thinkin bout class action.

Is it a router setup or a Hero setting?
Pleaes explain if it's one of the options
probs here too ...
Linksys WAP54G v3.1
vs
HTC Hero
was working perfectly for first month or so, but has been getting worse and worse. ie, for a few weeks it would see the wifi but would usually fail to connect. now I'm lucky if it can see it at all!
have reflashed the wap with dd-wrt and experimented with a lot of settings. no diff.
have reflashed the hero with hero21 comunitry v1.6. no diff. (and also latest radio)
it just starts and stops when it feels like it.
oh, and my eeepc works fine on the same wifi, so I know it's not some wap screw up.
tried every tip I can find like 'use mixed mode' or 'g only', etc etc.
I am starting to think it's a hardware fault?
Same problem
Siemens Gigaset Tiscali modem with wpa psk2 tkip and T-mobile hero rom.
Sees the modem and connects with security first time but then says 'remembered out of range' on wifi settings but interestingly in wifi buddy it constantly has the syncing symbol next to the network.
Really annoying.
I've tried WEP and security off, wireless g only etc etc.
I have problems too but seems different to yours... but who knows : in fact i can't connect to wifi when the SSID is masked. Even if - or course - i put manuualy the ssid before with the good wep key. It happens on a livebox ( orange box )... but if i press the button to show the wifi network - it has to be made when you connect a device for the first time on this box - then it connects to the network... else it tells me that the network is out of range...
So does the wifi on hero has problem with masked SSID ? To compare i never had this problem - on the same box - with the touch diamond and the touch hd... and at home, not masking the ssid, the connection is ok without doing anything.
Ciao
Fred
I had the same problem with a Zyxel 660 router. I was able to connect to the wifi (WPA/PSK enable) but there was no data transfer possible.
So I updated the Radio ROM to the 63.18.55.06JU_6.35.08.29 version and it solved the problem.
hello
i was so looking forward to getting my new x10 mini pro only to find a few faults some of which i can live with until 2.1 comes out (should really be 2.2 & sooner) but i cannt seem to connect to my wireless router.
i have tried several different methods, including going through all the wireless channels on the router, enable mac address filter and have only my x10 set, try all the differents security settings - but still i cannot get my phone to obtain an ip address before it gives me the unsuccessful message.
so went to mcdonalds tried their openzone and connected fine to their network.
now my next guess would be is my router is old (about 4 years maybe more) linksys WRT54GS so anyone know of any problems with specific routers at all?
i know i had problems setting up my godsons ipod touch with my router, but didnt dig any deeper on it as he wasnt fussed about it at the time - so think it could be that but will hold off rushing out to get a new router for a while yet, probably to test some other peoples routers first.
Is you SSID hidden?
I have found that on some routers, Android phones in general won't connect if the SSID is hidden.

The WRT54GS should be a perfect router to use.
Make sure you are running latest dd-wrt firmware on it, setup wifi security as : WPA2 Personal Mixed, TKIP+AES
I have these settings and phone connects easily.
Its a good router, do as above poster advised and definitely get latest firmware on. Try going on just G mode if there's no B-only old wifi gadgets in your house.

I noticed my wife's X10 mini won't connect to Channels 12 and 13. If your router is on one of those channels, try moving it to 11.
I have difficulties connecting to my wifi router at home, SMC Barricade N2, WPA2 authentication, it works only after resetting the router.
Now after turning off TKIP cypher suite (only AES), it works perfectly
update: and also helped to enable static IP... but I am using wifi only @home
Had the same problem. Changed to Channels 11 and detected imediatly my wifi network.
Hi, I have a different problem with the wifi.
At work and some other connections I've seen to have an open wifi, which i can freely connect.
However, I am still unable to browse the internet as it requires some browser authentication.
I've seen other fones (Nokia and Iphone) have their browsers popup a webpage to input the credentials.
but my mini pro doesn't display this page.
i've already tried going directly to the login url manually but still doesn't display the login page.
someone told me that this might be a limitation of android but haven't seen any reports about it...
i also saw and tried 2 apps (Open Wifi Login and Browser Wifi Login) that should have solved this but did not.
Has anyone else had this experience?
Help please....
shameless self-bump
other fones seem to have the same issue but no solution...

hi,
I've linksys wi-fi router model WRT54GH in my home & it has a good amount of signal strength to cover entire area.
My recently bought galaxy S2 is able to identify linksys wi-fi access point & connects too with the IP assigned to it, also at wi-fi settings connected being displayed.
Now when I try to access Internet (any url google/FB), it doesn't connect at all.
I tried almost everything about router configuration, restart etc. but with no success
can someone plz help on this ?

In my case the problem was with frozen "WiFi sharing" in combination with juicy defenders "Location" fearure. It seems such combination is dangerous. Solutin (in my case):
1. defroze
2. remove all wifi networks
3. reboot (for "clean" frozing)
4. make WiFi sharing frozen
5. reboot again just for fun
Try to check your router's MAC address restrictions. In my router, as security, I have to add MAC addresses of each device to share internet. They take IP's, connects etc. but does not have accesses to internet
as above, check that there is no MAC filtering set up.
one other thing it may be is the security settings, if you have a WEP Key to access the router it may need the Hex conversion of your key depending on what level of security you have (64bit or 128bit for example)

Try setting up a static IP address for your phone, I presume your network is a 192.168.1.0, go into router settings and LAN setup, give your phone the address in a static DHCP assignment of 192.168.1.5, or any other address in the same subnet your in. Some SGSII's have problems with dynamic DHCP for some reason, some NS had the same problem too,

I have a similar problem and I fix mine temporarily by turning my wifi off, then in wifi settings > advanced, I change wifi sleep policy from 'never' to 'only when the screen is off'. However I have to do this every time I want to use wifi so it can become quite annoying sometimes.
So I can get through however only for a short period of time as it seems as long my Galaxy S2 keeps turning off my wifi even though it's on :/
I had exactly the same issue on Linksys E4200 with my laptop, could connect to network, even to router's attached storage, but not to internet. Restart helped
On SGS2, I couldn't connect to the router at all at first, but fixed this by switching from WPA2/WPA mixed mode access protocol to WPA2 private. But I guess this is not exactly your issue.

Yes, you are right this is not an issue for me.
In fact my SG2 being assigned with an IP address from 192.168.1.xx subnet.
Also at a same time my laptop connected with an IP from same subnet able to ping SG2.

My SG2 being assigned with an IP address from 192.168.1.xx subnet.
So I think IP addressing may not be an issue.
Also another thing I tried was, at a same time my laptop connected with an IP from same subnet able to ping SG2.
So wi-fi router may not be an issue here, whats say ???
Even I am facing the same issue at my office network. I am able to connect to the wireless network but if I try to access any app I cannot browse. This is really frustrating looks like some issue with the modem drivers.
I was able to browse on another wifi created virtually by mobile tethering. This looks like a major bug with the current firmware. Another interesting thing to note is that the Wifi network has a hidden SSID and uses WPA2 auth scheme.
I have seen a Galaxy S able to connect to the same n/w without any issues.
Has anyone figured out a solution to this one ?
Hi, thanks for your reply.
I am yet to figure out a solution for this
Even I am also agree on the probable issue with modem driver.
I've D-link modem.
Are you aware of anything about this modem that can be reconfigured to get this worked ... ?? pl let me know
The wifi router at my office is Cisco Aironet 1200 Series, anyone else facing this issue ?
I'm having the same problem at work connecting my SGS2 with v2.3.3 Official Firmware (customized for Orange service provider) to a Cisco Aironet 1130 AP. I can see that the Galaxy authenticates with the AP correctly and gets IP from the DHCP server, but it cannot send or receive any traffic, although the phone stays connected and authenticated. At home, I use an Atheros based Fonera with DD-WRT without any problem.
As I'm the company's network administrator, I will try to further investigate this problem, but it seems like some kind of incompatibility between the devices or misconfiguration ....

try turn off the wifi, turn off the mobile data and turn on the wifi again
It seems the SGS2 sometimes has problems with DNS.
Try a static IP and use 8.8.8.8 as second DNS server, which is a free Google DNS server.
This fixed MY problems
I rooted my SGS2 and voila wifi worked at my office finally I have been able to find a solution.. love my SGS2 the Beast...
I'm having this same problem..
I think I've tried all the solutions above, but one (Sorry - noob question):
Rooted?
is there a firmware patch or something that I should know about?
Anyone got any other ideas?
ETA:
I can connect to hotspots (DHCP) and at home (Have to set it to static tho)
No internet
AP works - Laptop and i8910 (had to set static and advanced settigs etc). I've rebooted it a few times, set DHCP on and off. DHCP seems to be running on the router

This is an issue with SGS2 with wifi server using authentication protocol TPIK, if you use AES as encryption then it will work without any issues.
That should be a setting in my AP? I can't see it...
If I get a new non-crappy AP is that likely to solve my problem?
ETA:
Ah - that's a WPA thing? Mine only seems to do WEP - is that right?
Hi there,
I have near been driven to madness by this problem so im admitting defeat and opening it up to all and everyone.
Very quick history - I have weak signal on the top floor of my house, so i purchased a TP LINK WR702N mini router. I have set this up as a wireless repeater on the top floor, and for the majority of my devices it works great. On my sisters windows laptop, my girlfriends iPhone and iPad, they all see the network, connect with full strength and receive 54Mbps. On all of these devices, I can enter 192.168.1.254 and reach the repeaters settings page, or enter 192.168.1.1 and reach my main router (downstairs) settings page. This suggests to me that everything works fine.
When i connect with an android device (either my Nexus 10 or my samsung galaxy S2) the moment they pick up the strong repeater signal - they lose internet connection. The are connected with 100% and 54Mbps speed to the repeater - but they cannot access the web. I can bring up 192.168.1.254 for the repeater, but they will not access 192.168.1.1 for the main router - I believe this is the problem.
I have tried changing the settings on my main router - I have changed the whole network from WPA to WEP encryption, to no avail
I have changed the android advanced wifi settings, changing to fixed IP on both of the android devices and setting the default gateway and DNS to be 192.168.1.1
I turned off my devices, reset the main router, then turned on the repeater - this appeared to fix the problem - but when i turned the repeater on last night I couldnt get internet access, so i retried this step and it didnt work
as a note, all of the devices on my network have a fixed IP set from my main router - these correspond to the fixed IPs on my android devices.
I have spoke to Google and TP Link supprt, each blame the other, and now I really dont know what to do.
Thanks
::bump::
Make sure your devices do not send out, nor honour, ICMP redirects. Since your are running both on the same subnet, there's a possibility your repeater sends out an ICMP redirect once your Android device addresses the main router, since it IP topological is a closer way talking directly.
Or, use different subnets.
Hey folks,
Not quite sure where to begin with this one, so I figure I'll just explain what I've done so far and see if any of you have any ideas.
First off, I tinkered with the settings of two DD-WRT hotspots (both 2.4ghz and 5ghz respectively,) but various alterations made no difference, so I restored them to how they were before.
I then set up a wifi hotspot on a spare Note 3 that I have lying around, both in 2.4 and 5, and 5 wouldn't work altogether (giving me a generic error message when trying to initialise the hotspot) while 2.4 worked but just wouldn't connect at all to my A10.
For the record, I am able to *connect* to the router, my A10 is just the only device in the household for which the router doesn't then open up to the greater internet.
I have set up a DHCP entry for the phone, both using its randomly generated local IP address and swapping the name and MAC with a previously established entry that I know works, and I have uaed both auto and manual settings on the device (I use 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 DNS servers so I figured I'd manually input them too).
Either way, the A10 doesn't connect to the internet via wifi, just network data, while all my other devices are fine.
Does anybody have an idea how I can resolve this issue short of sending the device back altogether, or at least for a hardware check/repair?
Thanks for your consideration,
Kaolin
Just grabbed some screenshots of my settings, can get more if these aren't enough. How do I attach them?
update:
I contacted my network provider and they had me reset my overall settings and rebooted, and then after that didn't work, I reset the network settings specifically. Still no change.
I'm concerned that it's a Modem firmware issue, which would suck, because the A10 custom ROM scene is tiny.
