Copying text in the browser - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In the Hero browser, you can select Copy under the menu to select text on the webpage to copy to the clip board.
There appear to be two methods of selecting the text:
1) Use your finger - drag between the start and end points and the text is highlighted and copied when you lift your finger off the screen
2) Use the trackball - move the cursor to the start of the text you want to copy, then ... ?
What comes next when using the trackball? I can't work out how to tell it that this is where I want to begin. I tried pressing/clicking the trackball, but this appears not to do anything.
Any help appreciated

it's a bug. follow this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557613

Thanks for that

Htc HD2 question

Hi,
I'm planning to get a HD2 soon but I have a question regarding the text highlighting which is very important for me before choosing this phone.
On previous resistive screens like the Jasjar/Htc Touch Pro2..etc, after typing texts, you can quickly highlight them by pressing the finger on the screen and move left/right with the desired texts being selected. While on the Iphone and the Vodafone H1 360 which have capacitive screen, this method of selecting specific texts is not possible. I would like to know if this method applies to the HTC HD2 also?
Thanks!
yes you can select with a finger drag.
you can select with finger drag but it will never be accurate. this is limitation of capacitive screen.
It can be done, if that method is giving you trouble you can always go to the edit keyboard and press select text and use the arrows to get exactly what you need.

(that edit keyboard is only available when using swype, it doesn't come as standard on non tmous phones)
ok thanks for your reply. I think i won't go for the HD2 for the moment because selecting texts is my primary concern as I emails/texts a lot. THanks.

[Q] how to turn off copy/paste?

Hi All,
Is there a way to diabled the new copy and paste feature?
I ask because I can not longer edit text, if i make a typo and touch to move the cursor back, it just highlights the entire word. Touch it again ans it de-selects.
This annoyence is compounded by the lack of left and right cursor keys to move though text.
Is it just me or does anyone find this annoying?
Thanks
Dave
Hi
I just accidently found the answer to my question.
If you are editing text, say for a text message, touch the text and keep you finger/thumb on the screen. I little green text curser appears above where you are touching.
You can then drag this to the correct place in the text that you wish to edit.
Thanks Everyone.
Dave
Yep i already knew that
Sometimes is good to actually read the little intro or some tips and tricks in the Microsoft Windows Phone 7 page. After all, they exist for some reason
But WP7 is very easy to manage. Here is a tip: if you need something, just press and hold to see more options appear... This can be done almost everywhere

New to S2 Homescreen questions

Got my S2 today and love it. But I have a few questions.
1. When I delete items on my home screen and don't add any I get this dumb message that stays on the home screen that I can't get rid off it say
"Press and hold this page to add content"
Well I don't want anything on their, so how do I get rid of that?
Thanks..
Never seen that .

Also how do I rename a folder in the app drawer? I've tried everything and I can't seem to get it....

Click to collapse
open the folder and long press the name and an edit box will pop up
When I do that it just drags the folder to the home screen. Its a folder I created to put all the bloatware into. I want to name it bloatware, but all it says is folder 1.
Edit
Add Folder
Drag Folder to Page
Enter Name Box Opens
TYPE NAME
Yes
Close
= named folder .

I have a different question re the home screen - can you set screen 3 to be the default screen the phone goes to when you press the home button? Kinda makes more since being able to scroll a screen left or right.. starting at 1 means you can only go one direction..

I'm sorry, what?? What are you talking about? Your post is so incoherent it's frustrating. How does this have anything to do with what falcon26 was asking?
@falcon26: This is apparently another one of AT&T's "bright" ideas, and I agree, I hate looking at it. I wish those fuktards at AT&T would stop wiping their stinky, sh!tty codemonkey fingers all over my device. I can't wait to get my Otterbox commuter so I can cover up the stupid AT&T logo on the front.
Ranting aside, I don't think this message displays on blank pages of the international variant of the SGH-i9100 (someone correct me if I'm mistaken). I'm sure there is a way to remove it, but I'm not sure what that is. I would definitely appreciate it if someone would chime in and offer a permanent solution (i.e. what code/picture to remove from whatever .xml/launcher file/directory, etc.), but in the mean time, I have a band-aid that works around this and ultimately accomplishes the same thing.
1. Go to https://market.android.com/details?id=org.hk.sticky
2. Install Sticky Widget
3. Add Sticky Widget to the screen you want to remove the "Press and hold this page to add content" message from.
4. When you add the widget a preferences screen will pop-up. Set the background to "Transparent" and press "Set".
4. Presto! No more idiot message. Just be mindful of where you put the widget so you don't press it by accident.
@micks_address:
1. From the Home screen, press the Menu button.
2. Press Edit. Thumbnails of all your homescreens will then appear in a matrix, with the "Remove" trashcan icon at the bottom.
3. Press the Menu button again.
4. Then press "Set as Home".
5. Press the thumbnail of the screen that you wish to become the default Home screen.
6. Press "Done"
7. Done

I found a way to Copy and Paste on Nook Tablet!

I have figured out a way to copy and paste on the Nook Tablet (well, in editable text fields at least).
You will need to install Hacker's Keyboard, as well as Swype. There is another thread with detailed instructions how to do that here: [Tutorial] Installing alternative Keyboards on the NT.
To copy text, you hold down shift on Hacker Keyboard and use the arrow keys to highlight the text you want to cut/copy. Long press on settings button on Hacker Keyboard, then change keyboards to Swype. Your text should still be highlighted. Then use the Swype keyboard shortcut ("swype" from the Swype button to c) to copy the text. This copies the text to the NT clipboard. Then navigate to wherever you want and paste the text using Swype-v. I have tested and this works even between different apps, so there is a system clipboard.
The copy paste shortcuts in Swype are like pressing ctrl-x,c, or v in Windows (cut, copy, paste, respectively). Also I should note for developers that the stock ROM does not seem to disable the clipboard, it's just that there is no way to highlight text, and then copy and paste it as these functions are disabled in the stock UI. But we can get around that using this method.
I know, it's a couple steps and a slight hassle, but it will have to do until one of the CM (or other ROMs) are ready. This method is still better for things like copying 15 character long gibberish passwords from KeePass though, for example.
Nice fix dude ....
Will help me till CM7 (or 9) gets ready ...
Is there any app to do this ? T'would be great if a program was written for this otherwise...
Can see it becoming hit (feature to button saviour maybe)
Shortly after posting this, I caught up on my reading and realized that an alpha version of CM7 had already been released. So I thought that my little workaround had been immediately deprecated. Well, it seems that now there are some issues with CM7, so maybe (at least in the short term) my little trick will see some use after all.
There are still reasons to stay with the stock B&N firmware, so the tip is still quite useful.
A small update. In another thread here about Keyboard?, ckevinwelch turned me on to an app called Keyboard Manager, which allows you to switch keyboards based on orientation. I now have Swype in vertical and Hackers in landscape. This is handy for all sorts of things, but especially copy and paste because the part where you switch between keyboards is faster.
Also (and unrelated to copy/paste), need to move over a few characters? Or insert the cursor precisely when editing (I always have a problem with this, maybe it's my fat fingers)? Just rotate to landscape, use Hackers arrow keys for precise positioning, then rotate back to Swype for the majority of typing. It's like getting the best of both keyboards, very handy!
I want to make a little addition.
Opera Mobile Web Browser has embedded selection and copy/paste functions, which are independent from keyboard or other apps.
I've found a way to enable the copy & paste permanently for all text fields - instructions & video at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1534757. Requires root.
I discovered a way to copy and paste using google docs. This doesn't help inputting urls or passwords, but it sure is handy to use when writing text into your Nook. The copy/paste comes as part of the google docs app. What's really neat is that your writing goes into the cloud and you can access it with any other computer. So since people where mentioning copy/paste function, I thought I'd add this comment.

Need help with copying & pasting

I have text in hotmail & on website forums that I'd like to copy & paste across multiple forums.
These are long list of sports cards.
On my tablet I get the two blue tab markers to come up when I do a long press on the text but the issue is as I scroll up or down a page the markers don't seem to want to continue in whatever direction it is I'm going as I try to highlight text.
I have done the select all option but that picks up unwanted text on the top, bottom, & sometimes side.
Any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions?
Now to add I have another issue, as I was going to copy some text, my tab froze for 5-10 second after highlighting text and pressing the copy button. Then it dropped the internet screen I was on all together in sending me to the home page.
No idea how or why this came about. Should I do a factory reset to see if that helps anything or is that too extreme as I don't really want to lose all the apps and pictires I have on here.
Tab marking:
Just long press and hold the end market and pull it to the end of the screen. The scroll should keep highlighting.
Screen freeze:
Which ROM, KERNEL are you using? Stock or custom?
