Reformatting my card for APP2SD - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
Running the MC2.2 ROM and didn't realise that APP2SD required a reformatting of the card before it could be used, I'd like to start putting this to some good use so as I understand the process to partition the card will require wiping it, is there a way for me to back up the contents of the card? I could obviously copy the entire contents to my PC but where would I copy it back to once the partitioning is finished? Or would it be best to just copy off my media then uninstall/reinstall all apps from the market which will then appear on my card in the appropriate place?
Also is there anything else that needs doing on the phone to enable APP2SD or just having the MC2.2 ROM and inserting a correctly formatted card will do the trick?
Thanks
Russ

Mounting a New SD Card Noobie Question

Currently running Liberated 2.2 on HTC Aria. I am using the 2 gig SD card that came with the phone.
I read that this ROM automatically installs many of the default and downloaded apps to the SD card which is why the option to move to SD card is grayed out in the Applications menu. Several of the google apps downloaded directly to the SD card, and several of the other apps I downloaded gave me an option to move them to the SD card (after installing them), in the applications menu.
So then, is it as easy as backing up my data in Nandroid, copying the files to a PC folder via USB, ejecting the old card, installing the new card, copying the files back from the PC folder and doing a Nandroid restore?
The old card has a 512 meg ext2 partition on it that I think was created automatically by Liberated FR006 when I first flashed it. Will Liberated automatically create an ext2 on this card when I mount it?
Do I need to perform a format card function in Clockwork Mod first?
Please advise! And as always, thanks in advance for your help!

Well since I didn't get any answers, I just jumped in and did it! Here's how:
1. Move all apps to the phone reboot into recovery.
2. Run a Nandroid backup
3. Restart the phone, USB connect to PC and copy SD card contents to PC folder
Disconnect USB when done.
4. Go to SD card/Phone Memory and eject card.
5. With phone still running, take out the old card and insert the new card.
6. Create ext2 partition with ROM Manager or other viable means
7. Connect using USB, copy contents of PC folder back to new SD card.
8. Reboot phone into recovery menu.
9. Perform Nandroid restore.
Maybe the file copy to the PC followed by a Nandroid restore is redundant, but that is how I did it, and it worked.
How do I know if I got my sd card partitioned?
I installed a new 8gb card. I tried to use the method you described here. When I tell ROMManager to partition the card (512MB EXT and 64MB swap size) it reboots and very briefly what looks like a box or package pops up on the screen and then it just displays a white triangle with a yellow exclamation sign and a green android beside it. I have to remove the battery and reboot the phone.
What is happening or what am I doing wrong?
the phone will boot up ok and when I look at SD card and Memory in Settings it says 6.85GB avail and 6.85GB free.
I think I got it! in rom manager I flash clockworkmod and then it the format the partition thing to take place

Install new SD card

Ive done some looking around and cat get answers to my specific questions.
When installing a new sd card, do I turn off phone, pull old sd card, put new one in, then boot up phone, connect to pc and format and then copy my backup of old card to new card?
My main concern is booting up phone with the new sd card that isnt formatted yet and has no data yet on it. Will that effect me when I bootup phone to connect to pc to format?
And lastly, do I need to do any cache clearing or factory resets in this process anywhere?
Thanks for any help/advice.
You can format the new memory card right from the phone itself. Shouldn't affect any bootups, but obviously if you have apps on the old memory card you won't be able to use them.

Change SD card without loose apps

Hi. I have bought a new SD card and i want to put it on my android.
I havde android 2.2+ so i have apps installed on SD card (not using app2sd, usign default android way).
I can make a backup of my SD card but not the apps there. I tried to find the partition where the apps should be (maybe a ext2 partition?) but i cant find it.
So, the question is, how can i replicate all my old SD card to the new SD card?
Thanks
If there is no ext2 partition then by default they should be in the .android secure folder but i dont think that simply copying the folder to the new sd will solve the problem because after you send an app to the sd, some of the data from the app still remains on the phone. Try copying the folder anyway and let me know if it works.

[Q] Data keeps randomly deleting from my SD card.

Greeting Everyone,
I have a most perplexing problem., for some reason Data keeps randomly deleting from my SD card. I dont know what's causing this but I suspect it happens whenever I run low on USB storage. If that is the reason, why would data be deleted from my SD card because Im low on USB?
If that is the case, how can I prevent this from happening, can I write protect my folders on my SD card? set to read only? AND if I set to read only that means I cannot save data to it either.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
3 things come to mind ..
1~low storage space
2~corrupted data
3~damaged SD card
And possibly a bad connection on the contact points.
Clean the card contacts with a q-tip and a small amount of rubbing alcohol and reinstall the card.
If the condition persists, then move your files to PC from the card and format the card via PC to FAT32 file structure.
( full format, not the quick method )
Once the card is done, then move your files back to the card.
Also, avoid any repartitioning of the card using apps like rom manager etcetera, as your card can be damaged using these methods.
If the above steps fail, then consider trying another sd card.
Good luck to you ..g
Are you losing a particular "data" file? And if it is just music, did you check with a file explorer to see if it is indeed not there and just not cached by the music app?

I think maybe formatting with FAT32., everything else Ive done. I remember formatting a 16GB card on my PC and never had this issue.

[Q] Formatted SD Card: lost internal card!!

Help!
I moved to GS2 and wanted to use my SD card I used on another phone; it had an ext4 partition and a FAT32 partition.
All went well.
Then I decided to remove the ext4 partition and have the SD fully formatted with FAT32. I tried both Primary and Logical, tried NTFS too and even recreated and ext partition with ClockwordMod, but I end up always the same way, that is if I put the card in the phone and then boot, it freezes, terminate processes and does not see ANY internal or external SD card!!
Please help! How can I get back to a working full FAT32/NTFS card?
Thank you!!!
Dude looks like you have really messed up not only your phone, but also the way you put your problem. How is it possible that you boot up your phone and still you cant see at least your internal SD... Anyhow my suggestions are:-
1. Remove SD card and boot normally without SD card. See if your internal shows up. If YES, format the SD card in PC and put back in cell.
2. If the phone still crashes, you need to clear all caches in Recovery. Do and see what happens. Also tell us if you are rooted? what ROM are you using..
3. Apart from the SD, does your phone work normal?
Bro, your query is kinda too complex and one of the noobiest one i have come upon in a long time.
Sorry for not having said before: without the SD the phone boots normally. AND however I format the SD card, is it always readable in Windows 7.
About your question "How is it possible that you boot up your phone and still you cant see at least your internal SD", it is what I'm wandering too... It looks like the "badly" formatted SD messes the partition logic in Android.
Now I'm trying this: deleted all partitions, created a new unformatted one trying to format within phone.
Thanks for help and patience!
Yes! It worked!! The phone saw the unformatted card and prompted for action; I made it format and now it's back
