I'm quite excited about this:
http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/142083/mobile-firefox-to-debut-on-windows-mobile.html
Perhaps we'll get that long-awaited full browser functionality on Windows Mobile.
If this is the Firefox seen on the latest N800 Tabet update then we can expect FULL, smooth flash support and snappy load times.
If so this could be a worry for Opera Mobile, who are seemingly SH*T at integrating effective flash support into their browsers - they couldn't even manage it with the Wii.
I can only cross my fingers......

If you want to try a beta of it here it is !

It's quite good but it's not perfect flash is not yet implemented in this version but RSS is !! there are also missing options like the ability to lie to websites about the type of device (portable/desktop) and it keeps putting the touch keyboard up, just tap on the screen to close it

I believe Minimo is a separate project. The new firefox development is for wm6 and linux-based devices with a bit more RAM and ROM at their disposal as far as i know.
Nokia ousted Opera in favour of firefox for the browser in OS2008 (which is superb). If the same browser can be put on my WM6 device i'll be VERY happy.
It will be great... I use the web alot and thats one reason i use my iphone more. if we can get firefox ... goodbye iphone...

It seems that it CERTAINLY isn't Minimo - more a fully-fledged browser and will released around the first quarter of next year.

I see what you are saying, but I also think it is foolish to think they are going to completely ignore the mobile browser they already have in their stable and come up with a new firefox mobile !!!
We will wait and see, I think you will find the the up and coming firefox will have more in common with minimo than you give credit for. When using minimo I noticed it was quick opening up tabs (quicker than opera) and the loading symbol for a loading tab was the same as used on firefox on my desktop! the point is there are already similarities I expect firefox to be based on some if not a lot of the minimo code.

Is this right?
I have removed it in favour of IE atm

Whilst we're talking about Opera, there's a little thing I've been pondering.
Why do developers of Mobile browsers find it so difficult to integrate flash support?
Surely even if there isn't a dedicated flash player for this platform there's some way that the browser could detect if a flash format needs processing and converting. As far as I know the Firefox browser built into the EEE pc's xandros OS does this.
At no point do any drivers need installing. Even Stage6 files are converted and streamed without needing to install the web player.
So someone I know surprised me today by saying he's thinking of purchasing the Hero. See, the thing is that he's not the most tech savvy person in the world, and he admitted that he had hoped I would offer him help in using it and generally improve its usability.
Problem is that I'm a Windows Mobile guy. I really don't know anything more about Android than that it's Google's mobile OS. That's it.
So I was hoping some people here could answer the question I had of whether Android apps work across builds? For example, do the apps made for the HTC Dream work on the Hero?
As of currently, I know Google is making a hell of a lot of builds (Original, Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, and so on), and they seem to be making it at a hyperpace. I also imagine that this might continue for quite a while, so this is an important question to me.
Thank you to all for reading!
Currently all Android phones run the same OS and alle apps works cross-phones. There has been some conflict with apps running on the Hero because of the Sense UI but this can be fixed by turning Sense of or use an application called Bar control wich allows for use of the original UI with ease.
You should tell your friend not to worry, Android is pretty easy and basic in general use.
Dont take my word for gospel but this is my perspective and my experience as a Hero user. I love it and your friend is gonna love it to.
R. Duke, thank you for your answer and reassurance.
I had not realize that all of the Android phones were currently using the same build (I thought the Dream was using the original Android build and Hero was using the newer Cupcake), so I'm glad to hear there will be complete app compatibility.

Most Dreams would have either received an OTA update to 1.5 (Cupcake) or its owners have likely rooted their devices and applied a custom rom, but again these are all likely to be based on Cupcake.

I'm planning on getting the Sprint HTC Hero in October. Do you know of any conflicts with the following applications:
Astrid
PDANet
Where
Evernote(Web version)
Documents To Go
Sprite Backup
My Backup Pro
Last.fm
GPhone Manager Pro
Astro File Manger
AndExplorer
TasKiller
ReedR News Reader
Flixster
I doubt that any one can tell you definitively as the phone is not out, and even then I doubt someone is going to download and test such a specific list of apps. However, I moved from a G1 to a Hero, and not found a single compatibility problem yet. When the firmware on the G1 went to Cupcake, some apps did break, but in general they were fixed by their devs very quickly.
Regards,
Dave
Well... there are actually some difference between the HTC Dream and all the other Android phones currently; the Dream have a physical keyboard. Imagine a game that uses the physical keyboard running on a phone with only the virtual keyboard (ScummVM to name one such app). How the hell are you supposed to use a function mapped to the "U" button without a keyboard?
The game Cestos for example have a chat function. The players can chat with each other during matches. Those with a Dream can easily chat while those witrh non-physical keyboards will have to press Menu and then press up the keyboard to start typing (it works but it isn't fluid).
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/30/hp-touchpad-will-receive-ota-udpate-for-added-functionality/
HP may have abandoned the TouchPad, but that apparently won't stop the company from issuing a post-mortem OTA update for its webOS tablet. Yesterday, an HP spokesperson confirmed to CNET that "HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog." The rep didn't offer any specifics, but reaffirmed that HP remains "fully committed to the ongoing support and service of customers who purchased webOS devices." The news comes on the heels of a Quickoffice HD update that dropped yesterday, and at a time when TouchPads are selling like hotcakes -- which probably explains HP's decision to issue a tweak. Indeed, the company went on to say that it's seen "huge spikes in activations and between 3-5X downloads of apps," since the TouchPad fire sale first launched.

[Q] New Touchpad OTA update safe?
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20099049-64/hp-update-to-boost-touchpad-functionality/
Doesn't say exactly when this update will be available. Is it safe to assume that we shouldn't accept the update, if given the option, if we're planning on eventually flashing Android port?
Good question.
I was also wondering if the folks who actually wanted to stay with web os, will the homebrew patches and kernel have to be re-written to work on the updated firmware?
Given that it just says "a future update" with not even a vague indication of *when* that might be, I don't think it's something that we should fret over for now

it depends how drastic the changes are.. i have a feeling the update won't be anything major...
This isn't iOS. The updates don't ever do anything in theory to close down the OS, other than required security hole fixes. Anything you could do prior to the update, you can do after. The webOS doctor is what is probably going to become hijacked for allowing Android installations, and this in theory, will never stop working. Remember, we have always been able to recover a "bricked" device through the webOS Doctor; unlike the many other platforms available. Also, it has been close to 2 years since we had to remove all patches prior to updating. I'd suggest waiting 24 hours, if you can, to verify. Patches and homebrew should not be broken in the update.
One thing they should fix is the browser. Upgrade their libraries up to the level Honeycomb 3.2 or iOS 5 (all of which is open source) to improve the performance (especially JavaScript) and support more HTML5 standards (like SVG). They should also allow users to modify their user agent string to the iPad UA via a hack, so all tablet-oriented websites display as they are meant to.
Although the Touchpad browser is not horrible, it could do a lot better compared to the Android and iOS browsers which are based on WebKit as well. Having an awesome browser could give this tablet much more life while just running webOS with web apps!

i imagine the update will bring things like a native ebook reader or an updated marketplace, nothing radical like a fully skinned version of honeycomb
I too hope for some improvements to the browser, there are a few issues with it, nothing tragic but irritating enough at times.
OTA Update = Android Honeycomb?
Maybe????
It could happen.
(I'm such a troll today)
maybe we will get more than a ota, maybe actual support for webos.

Basic first.
Sound loss and Wifi problems.
Now if we want to go Fancy.
Rotation while playing phone apps is always portrait.
Youtube full screen is up side down (if using a case)
speed up calendar.
speed up photo "fine" loading.
browser minor issues.
Cursor issues.
Do not accept. If they are designing the Android for 3.0.2 then leave it. It's only a matter of a Week before an Alpha is available from Cyanogen.
Android, that way they can collect the $1600. Hell, they have to make back the stock money they lost somehow
I'm thinking the OTA will just be Homebrew/Preware kind of stuff and maybe some new apps.
However, a tabbed browser and a VNC client that works would make me really happy.
Don't Know why people knock the browser. I feel that the WebOS browser is honestly the best mobile browser I have EVER used functionality wise... Never before on a tablet or tablet-like device have I not had to fiddle with user-agent settings and such to get where I need to go... So far only one site has failed on the Touchpad... Hulu, And we all know why that doesn't work...
Other Note: I would laugh if the OTA was just to pre-install preware and homebrew ability... (although it would be a BIG smack in the face of apple, Who leaves their old products to rot instead of supporting them like HP has so far.)
Then again, I find WebOS in general to be the best Mobile OS ever made, And also the best Mobile OS killed before its time...

I have to agree that functionally, it's an excellent browser. It's just that internally (performance en compatibility with technologies) it's not quite as great as Safari in iOS 4 or the Honeycomb browser. Check this link to see what I mean.
The reason why it's important is that by the end of the year all webOS support for native apps will have definitely dried up, which means that webOS users will have to rely on web apps. Web apps can be freaking amazing if the browser supports the latest technology and has good JavaScript performance. Although the Touchpad is not bad there, it should be doable for HP to update its performance and compatibility to the level of iOS 5.

Mupen64plus-AE
Hi I just wanted to give some attention to the new open source
n64 emulator for android Mupen64plus-AE which was developed by Paul Lamb.
Its currently in its beta testing phase and it would be awesome if other developers wanted to join in and contribute to the project.
Android market link:
https://market.android.com/developer?pub=Paul+Lamb
Heres a link to the latest build + source code:
http://www.paulscode.com/forum/index.php?board=11.0
[This is currently the only emulator for android with xperia touch pad support]
Here is an overview of the emulator:
Here is a comparison video of banjo-tooie running on n64oid and mupen64plus-ae:
Here is an extra video I made of the xperia play touch pads working with the emulator:
Common questions
The GUI is now finished so most of this information is now irrelevant
How do I map the gamepad buttons?
First, install and run the "SDL Scancode Finder" linked below. Press the keys you want to map, and write down the Scancodes that are displayed. Then after running Mupen64Plus AE at least once, close the app and edit the file [sdcard]/app-data/paulscode.android.mupen64plus/data/InputAutoCfg.ini. Under the [Keyboard] section, enter the scancodes that you wrote down earlier. For the analog stick, use the scancodes for the left and right buttons for "X Axis", and the scancodes for the up and down buttons for "Y Axis". Finally, save the file and restart the emulator.
SDL Scancode Finder:http://www.paulscode.com/source/AndroidSDLScancodeFinder/ScancodeFinder-debug.apk
Alternatively you use my control config and just paste is over the file. Just replace [sdcard]/app-data/paulscode.android.mupen64plus/data/InputAutoCfg.ini with the custom version of the InputAutoCfg.ini
Heres my config: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13594612/paulscode/InputAutoCfg.ini (right click and save as)
How do I change games?
Delete or rename the file [sdcard]/app-data/paulscode.android.mupen64plus/roms/mario.n64. Place the ROM you wish to play into that directory, and call it "mario.n64" (it doesn't matter what format the ROM is in, just call it "mario.n64", and the emulator will load it instead of Mario64).
How do I remove the touch control overlay?
Go to [sdcard]/app-data/paulscode.android.mupen64plus/skins and delete everything in there except the folder called touchpads, the touch pads folder it what lets you use the xperia play touch pads.

N64oid probably never will though. Adding touch pad support cuts of every android device
that has a firmware lower than 2.3 and thats alot of devices.
With Mupen64plus-ae multiple builds can be made so it doesn't effect other devices.
Thats why I feel so strongly that developers should help support this project,
it means that developers can add whatever they want and can create device specific features.
I would love to see this with touchpad support. Waht do you guess how long will it take?

Touch pad support is nearly done, my best guess it will either be finished by tomorrow or in a few days. Also just to clarify I am not the one making this emulator.

This is the latest build for qualcomm devices (like the xperia play: http://www.paulscode.com/source/Mupen64Plus-AE/13SEP2011/Mupen64Plus-debug-sortProblem.apk

What are you talking about? Google made it so that multiple versions of the same apk can be uploaded to the market under the same heading, so adding it for our device would therefore NOT rule out other phones, as they could just download the regular version (our version wouldn't be able to be seen by them), also, as a computer science major, it'd be easy to not have this problem if he doesn't want to go down this road, he could do, for arguments sake, if build.prop=="R800i"|"R800x"{control-type="touchpad"}else{control-type="regular"}, or even just a tick box in the option menu...!
therefore avoiding the problem. Obviously it goes a lot deaper than that, but saying that adding support for us would rule out other devices is just not true. It's something else that's stopping him.

Well If you actually knew anything about n64oid you would know that its not even on the android market. Its distributed via slideme which does not support uploading of multiple apk's for a single app.
And ive talked to alot of emulator developers and for some reason (Im not entirely sure why) Including touch pad support cuts off support for older versions (lower than 2.3).

Im not sure what you mean by backwards compatibility but in the future arm6 devices will be supported as well.
Also touch pads are in the process of being added, in the newest build the touchpad overlay has been added to the screen and different layouts have been made for different screen sizes (phone, tablet, small screens etc).

I meant having N64oid, FPSE, etc. detect the android version and run version specific code to add touch pad support while avoiding the compatibility issues.
I have done that before in software (I am a software engineer for a living) but it takes a long time to do and adds extra things to support. I certainly would not be motivated enough to do that either

Im no emulation programmer but alot of emulator developers have said the same thing that implementing the touch pad controls limits it to 2.3+
Im sure if somebody was brainy enough to create an emulator then they would know how to support more versions if it were possible.

Touch pads limit it to 2.3+ because of some of the classes and available system calls it needs are only in 2.3+.
But that doesn't mean it's impossible to make one apk support all android versions, just very impractical implementation-wise and probably not worth it.

Also I would like to point out touch screen controls have now been added but they are still not finished, there are still a few more things to be added like a moving analog stick and lots of optimisations so dont expect it to be perfect just yet.

got my hp touchpad earlier this week, like webos a lot tbh, but decided to dual boot with alpha 3, being new to android on a tablet i dont know what apps are worth downloading and what works?
any tips on some good apps to make me use the android side of the dual boot?
sadly cm7 is android 2.3 which is a phone os and everything that i would want the tablet version of just runs a high pixel density version of the phone app. unlike honeycomb, ics is open sauce so maybe theres hope for a true android tablet yet.
Oh, there are plenty of apps that are tuned for a tablet display even under 2.3. Here's a list of some of the ones I have installed:
Browsers
Dolphin HD
Opera Mobile
Apps
Evernote
Kaiten (tablet-friendly SMTP/POP/IMAP client)
Business Calendar
Nook (offers two-page reading view in landscape orientation)
Zinio
Netflix
News Readers
Pulse
Taptu
gReader
feedly
YourVersion Tablet
News Republic
Additionally lots of games either have tablet-specific layouts or take advantage of the extra real-estate:
250+ Solitaire
Angry Birds HD/Seasons/Rio (pinch zoom to see the full level)
Cut the Rope
Peggle
Stupid Zombies
Dabble HD
Pocket Legends
Random Mahjong
Majesty
Pinball Ride
There are a few launchers that give a better tablet experience as well, in particular VTL and ADW EX. Both offer dock bars that rotate with the orientation to the bottom of the screen and can be fitted with more than just four or five icons.
Even though they don't have tablet-specific UIs, many other apps do scale up to the larger screen very nicely:
Quickoffice/Documents to Go/OfficeSuite
Kindle/Google Books (unlike Nook, landscape view is single page but still very crisp)
WebEx
Anyway, you get the idea. While there are many apps that use the new Android 3.0+ APIs and therefore won't be available to us until ICS, there are plenty of other apps that give the full tablet experience even on 2.3.

AFAIK there's not a tablet-specific version of Facebook for Android yet, even for 3.0+. There are alternative Facebook clients for Android that may offer a more tablet-like experience, but I think that webOS was the first to get a tablet Facebook app, and then recently they released one for iOS. Nothing for Android yet...

That's what I thought also. Until I got out my old china made hundred dollar tablet with Facebook installed. Sure enough it does have the sliding navigation pane on the left side just like the ios version. I copied the apk on the touchpad and I lost the left pane navigation. I think fb app see the touchpad as a phone, so it doesn't show the left nav pane.

no i didnt. i thought it was still closed source.
i still want alot of tablet versions of apps that dont appear. such as swype and googles apps. honeycomb and ics also give better understanding to a tablet without home menus and back buttons.
Don't use facebook app, it's fat. Friend caster for facebook has a tablet view!
i did install netflix and evernote and both are running tablet versions different from the phone. the tablet version of evernote is actually quite impressive. its amazing that netflix is plays video so smooth compared to the strange laggyness of everything else.
Just got CM on my Touchpad and noticed Netflix has a tablet UI on the Touchpad different from the UI I get on my phone with the same version. The Touchpad has a nice working tablet UI. Pretty nice considering there is no Netflix support in WebOS.
Also Firefox just released an update with a new tablet UI. By default it goes to a phone UI, but any Firefox user knows its easy to change settings. Simply go to "about:config" in the address bar and change "browser.ui.layout.tablet" from "-1" (Auto) to 1 (Enabled). This will force Firefox to use the tablet UI even though it auto-detected a phone. Also useful is adding the string "general.useragent.override" with value "User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:9.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/9.0.1" to spoof a desktop user agent.
