the alarm problem - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i set the alarm at 8.30am. but if i turn off the handset or turn it into silent, it doesnt work. is this the rule of the hero? but as to my very old phone, its alarm still work either in each condition of turning off or vibration or silent mode. you know, the alarm should work or ring in any condition or time. because of that, i missed my uni course on monday and sleep until 11am, jesus.
after going through the user manual still cant find any related answers. dont know if this is so. thanks xxxx

Hi, my phone works for me if it's on / in sleep mode I think maybe check that you have not got volume down - easily happens just by holding the phone with the button on the side.
Also put it into Vibrate mode, that is loud enough to wake you up if you want it on silent.
I only keep my phone on silent during day, at nite it's on normal lol

The alarm won't ring if the phone is switched off, but it will if the phone is on vibrate. However, you might need to make sure that you've put it on vibrate by going into settings menu, and putting 'incoming calls volume' to 0, rather than using the volume button on the side of the phone. I've noticed that using the volume button puts the phone in 'Silent Mode' which is different to just having no ringing volume.

Yeah as above, if the phone is off- proper off not in sleep it won't switch itself on (like nokias) and sound the alarm. However mine works fine when in silent mode- the alarm still sounds.

oh i see now, you told me what was happening. i used the volume button to put it in 'silent mode', therefore the alarm doesnt work. i tested just now, it does need to turn into silent through the menu, either via the setting menu or the power off button to choose the silent or vibrate mode. thank you very much indeed.

I think you're all missing the easiest way.
Go into alarm settings. Select the alarm you're trying to configure. Hit the Alarm Sound option to bring up the list of alarm sounds. Now, with the list up, press the volume up button on the side of the phone. You'll see a new volume slider, "Alarm Volume", which is independent of the phone's silent state. Enjoy

well, hero has many hidden suprises waiting us to dig out. thanks. but if only turn into silent by the side volumn button, the alarm doesnt work still, cos when i adjusted the alarm volumn in the alarm setting, it's already in high volumn instead of silent.
anyway, you tell me a new way to configure the alarm volumn, many thanks.

Surely the easiest and quickest way is to put it into silent mode: one long press on the hangup key followed by a tap on silent mode.

Uh... That doesn't exactly let you increase the alarm volume.
And I just checked on mine, the alarm, surprise surprise, plays at the Alarm Volume - whether or not the phone is on Vibrate.

alarm tones no longer work!!!

Hello!
My alarm tones have stopped playing when the alarm goes off the phone just vibrates which is quite annoying as it made me late for work today!
has anyone come accross this before and know how to fix it???
cheers!
Iain
That happened to me, i downloaded audiomanager and set the alarm volume to max. Hasn't happened since!
Happened to me, go into alarm sounds (where you pick the sound of your alarm), then adjust volume, only place it appears, took me ages to find it.
...sorry, where's Alarm Sounds? Can't find a volume option
use the volume buttons whilst on alarm sounds

[Q] phone turns ringer on automatically?

To start off, i'm running gingerblur and i use the alarm on my phone almost every night. I also leave my phone on vibrate most of the time. The problem i am having is that i will go to bed with my phone in vibrate mode but when i take it off the charger in the morning (after the alarm goes off) it turns my ringer back on. Granted its usually at the lowest volume but still i would like for it to stay in vibrate mode. Is there a way to do this?
Also is there a way to go completely into silent mode by pressing the volume keys? It would be nice if i could just press volume down once in vibrate mode and it would change to silent mode.
Thanks in advance.
sigh, bump

Silent/Vibrate modes on GB 2.3

It could be me but I can't seem to have the option of having:-
SILENT / VIBRATE / SOUND since moving to 2.3?
I used to be able to use volume keys to cycle through and via lockscreen swipe.
Last time I changed sound settings but option seems to have gone....
I can only access vibrate, no silent option. Must just be removed, I for one never used that option.
Although, if you go into setting>sound, you can change the 'Vibrate' option to 'Never' and this will enable complete silence.
Instructions
Go to > Settings > Sound > Vibrate ... Select 'Only when not in Silent mode'
You can then have Silent, Vibrate & Ringer

HTC kept it (along with others, including Cyanogenmod).
I've made an app to emulate it in 2.2+

in settings you need to "enable silent state".
I have to quote myself from another thread, sorry about that!

Go to Settings > Sounds > Vibrate
It'll give you 4 options that also affect the way volume keys and lockscreen works:
1. Always
Your phone will always vibrate, regardless of volume level, so in lockscreen when you slide for silent or pressing the volume keys all the way down, you'll be in vibrate only, never silent.
2. Never
It will never go to vibrate mode, no matter what.
3. Only when silent
Your phone will vibrate when in silent mode, so when you slide for silent in lockscreen or pressing the volume keys all the way down, you'll be in Vibrate Only
4. Only when not in silent
Your phone will vibrate when not in silent mode, so when you slide for silent in lockscreen or pressing the volume keys all the way down, you'll be in Silent Mode, no vibration.

[Q] lacking silent mode

On my other phones, when you keep pushing volume down, the ringer transitions from ring, to vibrate, to silent. But on the the photon, it goes from ring to vibrate. How do I tottaly silence it?
I wish there was a silent toggle. Sometimes I want both the ring to vibrate...but not always. I need a quick toggle.
if you press and hold the power button. it will pop up a menu. sound off is one of the options. you can also set the sounds off using the settings app.
I'd recommend downloading "simple sound profile widget" - it is similar to the profiles back when I had a nextel and a black berry. I put a widget that has the option of normal, silent, or vibrate - very quick and easy!

Or just hold the down volume key and when you feel it vibrate, you will be in Silent mode...
I know what u mean
This option was gone since froyo for some weird reason
Only cm7 brings that way back (via volume rocker)

Oh yeah. Probably would've helped if I read teh manual, but who does that
I wish there was a way to turn on vibrate individually quickly instead of going through the settings.
Huh?! It isn't gone. I use it all the time. Just press and hold the down volume key and it'll switch to Silent Mode...

it either goes ring to silent
or ring to vibrate
as i said back in the day, it would go from ring to vibrate to silent
to the OP, go to settings, sound, and play with the vibrate settings and ull get what u want
Yeah, that's right...
My bad, I didn't really check.
Damn, why'd they remove that feature...

[Q] HTC One Sound problem?

I just got my One yesterday and so far ive only had one problem. When I put it on silent or vibrate mode, Notification sounds still play for sms etc. is this a bug or just how the phone works? coming from a galaxy nexus where silent mode would stop all sound.

Mine mutes sound in vibrate. I haven't used silent.
Go into the messaging app press menu and choose settings. There you will find the options for notifications

i have the same problem n this is the second htc one im using n still getting this problem..when i put the phone on silent it will ring out laud when i put it on vibrate it will still ring out laud wtf is going on ??? anybody knows
Why should someone need to modify the SMS app settings? If you put the overall phone on vibrate, that should be the prevailing condition. Mine not only plays notification sounds when on vibrate-only, it also rings...LOUDLY.
I'm having this issue as well! Every time I change the profile, I have to manually set the sound options. When I switch profiles, the settings never save. Does this defeat the purpose of profiles?! Why is this even an issue?! Anyone find a solution yet?
Turn off "Pocket mode"
Nope, still resets all profiles.
The only thing I can think of is maybe the contacts that are calling you are set up as "VIP"?
I saw another thread that said those contacts will always make the phone ring regardless of sound settings..
It's not just the calls. When I go to sounds, I select normal and put all the volumes to max. I go to vibrate and set all of the volumes to mute. When I switch back to normal, the notifications and alarms are mute and the calls are max. Nothing ever saves. I just want normal mode to have all volumes max and vibrate to mute everything. I'm completely new to Android, but there's got to be a simple way to do this.
So you're saying that after you select the "sound profile", you also manually make changes to the individual settings after that?
Because my impression of the profiles is that they are pre-set profiles.. and once you change a setting manually it is not going to "save" that change. The sound profiles are just that: pre-set profiles that you cannot save changes to.
I could be wrong though.
That could be a possibility. I find it a bit peculiar that they give you the options to change settings, but doesn't let you save them. I'm hoping that isn't the case, but if it is is there a way to create your own custom profiles? And would there be a way to switch to those profiles using the quick settings coming out with 4.2.2?
Honestly I haven't been interested in the profile feature. I pretty much keep my phone on one setup which is 80% volume for ringtone/notifications and 60% for media all day I don't need to constantly change profiles. If I need minor adjustments during the day I make them on the spot. So I'd have to look into it
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
Thanks for the help. I just find it hard to believe there's no way to set your own preferences. I even downloaded a 3rd party app that supposedly allowed you to create your own profiles. I set the Vibrate profile to silence on everything, to test it I text myself and bam the phone makes noise. Awesome. I just don't understand how this can be, it's starting to get a bit frustrating.
So let me ask a couple of questions so that I can target the right solution for you -
1. Are you just looking for something that will 'silence' your phone during certain times of the day/night? Or do you need something more complicated than that?
2. Do you need the sound profile to also have the option to be activated based on location? or just time
thanks
I'm not looking for anything location or time specific. I just want to have the option to switch off all sounds and have vibrate only whenever I need it. And the option to swap back to normal, of which I would like to have everything on full volume. For example, on the iPhone there was an external switch that shut all noises down and switched the phone over to vibrate or silent depending on the users settings. There is no external switch on the HTC One, so I'm trying to find a quick way to do that internally. I thought that was the purpose of the profiles, but I guess I'm mistaken. There must be a way to do this.

Yes, that's how the profiles (should) work.
When you want to switch to silent/vibrate, just select one of those. But don't manually adjust anything after that. Only switch the profile.
But honestly, it just sounds like you need to hold "down" volume until it hits vibrate, or silent.. and then hit "up" volume when you want sound back. Don't understand what it is you're trying to do, sounds like you're over-complicating this IMO. Because you're not asking for anything special.

From the HTC One user guide
Changing ringtone settings
Switching between silent, vibrate, and normal modes
Do one of the following:
- To change from silent to normal mode, press the VOLUME UP button.
- To change from vibrate to normal mode, press the VOLUME UP button twice.
- Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap > Sound > Sound profile.
Lowering the ring volume automatically
HTC One has a quiet ring feature that automatically lowers the ring volume when you
move it.
1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap .
2. Tap Sound.
3. Select the Quiet ring on pickup option.
Making HTC One ring louder in your pocket or bag
To help avoid missing incoming calls when HTC One is in your pocket or bag, the
pocket mode feature gradually increases the ring volume and vibrates when you
receive a call.
1. Slide the Notifications panel open, and then tap .
2. Tap Sound.
3. Select the Pocket mode option.
Right, that's what I thought. That this should be extremely easy. However, it is not. One way to do it is to hold the volume rocker in either direction and it changes the profile. BUT, when I switch it to vibrate, the notifications and alarms still make sound. Only the ringtone is silenced. That is not what I want. I want ALL sounds to be silenced, which is what I thought the settings would be for. When I change them it works, everything is silenced. But once I switch back to normal, Vibrate goes back to being ringtone-silent, notifcations & alarms - max volume. I hope my situation makes a bit more sense now. I would consider myself pretty tech savvy, so trust me when I say this is extremely frustrating. Thanks for your help so far though!
---------- Post added at 07:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:37 PM ----------
I just looked at it again and the "default" volumes for normal mode seem to be max volume and mute notifications and alarms. Why on earth would that be the default. Why would I want my alarms to be silent when its in normal mode. lol So I change notifications and alarm to max volume, switch the profile to vibrate and then back to normal. The volumes are then set back to max volume ringtone and mute notifications / alarm. WHYYYYY..
That's why when I want the phone on vibrate or silent, I just hold volume down. Then nothing makes sound. Not the notifications, ringtones, nothing. Using the profiles sounds like a hassle to me.
When I switch it to vibrate like that, the notifications, alarms and media are all still at max volume.
