[help needed] stock Android apps on Hero - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
In anticipation of the great work our devs are doing, like porting vanilla 1.6 to Hero, I wanted to put some stock Android apps on my Hero.
The reason for this is; I like the original Android UI better.
I made a list of which Android apps I would like to have on my Hero, I will update the startpost with added howto's, for the people interested.
Ofcourse, I am not capable of doing 'real dev' work, if that was the case, I would try to help port 1.6 to the Hero. But this is all I can do at the moment and I hope I can contribute this way to the community.
[done]
-Home app: download "home switcher" from the Market
[to do]
-sms application
-music player
-calendar
-browser
-cellphone /dialer application
-contact list
-camera application
-albums application
I think if we work together to make the original apps work, we have a viable alternative to a 'real vanilla' android Hero rom. Also I could be more easy to just modify the original Hero roms; when the HTC branded 1.6 and 2.0 will come out, we will know how to switch the apps, which I anticipate to be more easy than porting the kernel, and rebuilding everything, etc
The following stage would be to delete the old apps, and to make Android as clean as possible.
Ofcourse, only for those who want it. A lot of people love the Sense UI and the HTC apps, and that is good. Android is about choice
Also, I will look on how to change the apps, just comment if you know if a certain app can be restored, and even better, if you know how to.
Thanks in advance, everybody!

yeah, it is way easier to set this through application preferences in the phones settings, nothing so special about that.

did you check which of these are modified by htc anyway?
tbh i don't really care for a vanilla android, but afaik at least the camera application is the stock android one even in htc roms...

Yes, I checked all those applications:
In the Application properties you can see that it says "hTC Application" after you press the info key.
And in the application list (from the settings menu) it says "HTC corporation" under all the HTC rebranded apps.
edit: the HTC camera application has a different interface

so does anyone know how to get certain original apps back?

How can i remove the sense interface? I'm on modaco 2.8 but don't know for sure what i can delete

Just try that : http://android.modaco.com/content/h...7/13-08-1-0-modaco-hero-rosie-remover/#entry0
(you can download the zip and see in the rep MANIFEST what the update do and do it in adb shell)

this is what happens for the update.zip, just do a nandroid backup and try it?
i read in some forum that the camera app was identical, sry for that. did you find actual differences in the application, besides from the htc strings?

Thanks for what what the update.zip changes.
As you can see, it had widget next to everything, which means it only deletes the widget 'front ends' of these applications. It will not restore the stock android apps, like the browser or the music player.
I am trying to contact some Dream-developers/modders as they appear very capable and knowledgeable. They should be able to help us out.
Again, when we learn how to replace the HTC apps, we can have a 'clean' rom in notime, regardless of the android version. For example, if HTC released 2.0, but with sense and all that, we could just delete that, and change out the applications so we end up with a very fast, and clean rom.
I don't have a lot of faith in people porting over/ compiling a fresh, complete and fully working version for the Hero ..

any suggestions
Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the htc apps with the stock google android apps on Hero?
The list in the initial post contains all the apps I need.

I find it strange that this is not possible after such a long time. I would really have my Hero all stock Android. I dont like the HTC approach to things. Why is it so hard to replace the HTC apps with stock Android apps?

Partly because not all the stock apps are that easy to get, partly because HTC has stuck their brand on practically everything, and partly because if you replace one you have to replace others, else the apk signatures (especially with shared users and other dependencies) don't match. And if we're talking about the Sprint Hero, it gets even worse, because HTC had to modify the core framework beyond recognition, so that it would work with CDMA (so it's possible that just grabbing a vanilla apk, resigning it, and throwing it on there wouldn't work anyway).
All that is just conjecture though, as I haven't tried any of it aside from the Calendar app (gave up cause it didn't work immediately and I didn't have the time). Maybe I'll have time to try it this weekend and see how much can be replaced.

Great explanation, thanks. I miss Windows Mobile (Phone, whatever) where things like these were much easier to adjust without all this hassle.
If you manage to pull it of you will be my ...erm... Hero.

Yeah, the best of luck!

Completely Remove Sprint Picture Mail Account - How?

I have zero interest in Sprint Picture Mail. However, the account is sort of "hardwired" into the phone and there is no (official) way to disable it that I can find. It doesn't even show up in the list of accounts under Options in Pocket Outlook.
Does anybody know some sort of tweak to get rid of this account?
This would include...
1. Removing it from "send" options when emailing pictures (album)
2. Account chooser for Pocket Oulook
3. TF3D icon on the mail tab

I believe its an extra cab that installs after a hard reset. Try hard resetting, and stopping the customization.
If there are any Sprint cabs you want they are floating around here or ppcgeeks.

Well, that's definitely a solution, but I'd rather not have to hard reset my device. I have the settings just the way I like it now.
Does anybody know how to get rid of it after it's already installed?
just stick a peice of black tape over the portion that says picturemail on your phone...

I'd love to know how to dump this as well without a hard reset and manually adding the all the other useful cabs myself.
Thanks for posing the question, now to wait for a good answer....
Try downloading the cab from somewhere, installing it, it will say the previous version has to be removed, after it removes the previous version, hit cancel to not install the new version.
Might be worth a shot, although I don't know why you wouldn't want picture mail, it's not like you have to use it, but why remove features?

That is a good idea. I'll have to try that!
As for why, good question. I don't really know why it bothers me so much. Maybe just because I like less clutter? Maybe it's an OCD type of thing. :-D One of the first things I did was install Advanced Config and remove the sprint music/tv tabs because i didn't want to use them, even though i didn't have to use them. :-D

I'm definitely going to try that! Good idea.
As for why, I don't like the extra account when I got from my text to email accounts BUT the main reason is because it works like POO POO! I hate how it is so damn clunky in it's operation and even though I don't use it to send picmail, if I get a picmail it goes in there.
I applaud Sprint for trying but damn, try a little harder next time. I could have done without this particular crap a$$ feature.
I'm also very interested in dumping Sprint Picture Mail. Since we're limited to six accounts in Pocket Outlook, its being there keeps me from adding in another account I actually use, so it's frustrating that they would add that in by default. Tried deleting all of the registry keys, installed files etc that are done as part of the CAB installer, but it's STILL there! Haven't been able to figure out how to bypass the customization step, otherwise I'd do a HR in a heartbeat and see if skipping the CAB install would work, so still awaiting a solution to this...
i tried but sprint mail was not completely removed , i even installed the other version and it got completely installed and i could not un install it using memaid ! there should be a smarter way toget rid of this sprint B/S.
i don't think it can be removed this way.
you will need to load a custom rom without the picmail.
in the time you have wasted waiting for an easy solution you could have flashed and reloaded all of your settings.
Not everybody wants a to use a cooked ROM. You know, it really gets tiring when know-it-alls pop into threads and instead of contributing something useful just say "you should have just done x,y,z instead of doing what you actually wanted to do." It's already been established earlier in the thread that hard resetting (which running a cooked ROM requires) is not an acceptible solution. I do not appear to be alone in wanting an alternative solution. If you don't have a solution or a constructive comment, can't you just, you know, not post anything?
maan76 - Thanks for trying that method out. I've been too busy to tinker. At some point, I'm going to try scouring the registry and DLLs in \Windows\. Pocket Office is extended just like any other MS app -- through DLLs. So unless Picture Mail has been hardwired through some bizarre method or bundled together with a load of other useful features into one big unremovable DLL, I have got to think that there must be some DLL somewhere that can be unregistered somehow -- it just hasn't been discovered yet. I hope anyway! But you never know...

I echo thx2100 but will say the MAIN reasons I don't want to just run a cooked ROM right now is that the only real advantage at this time is they are light on the apps to free up ram. I come from the 6700 and 6800 and I'm in heaven with the speed and ease that the TP has when running multiple apps.
None of the new ROM's right now really dazzle me but if one comes around that is hot sh$# then I might run it.
With my stock ROM I have no surprises and only one really annoying feature which is the picmail but I can live with.
yep I totally agree thx 200,that there is no need for the cooked ROMs right now for the TP , why I am risking myself in a cooked ROM ?????????? to save RAM nop ! RAM is highhhhhhh and we have plenty of it in tp not like the mogul when the people were racing to build a ROM with higher free RAM after booting ! to save couple megabytes !, now with this strong hardware in TP , we have plenty of RAM .
the other reason which drove us before for flashing ROMs is the new applications (ex Manila for htc 6800 mogul ,u tube......etc) now we ve got the most updated versions of these software in the touch pro.
no logic reason for flashing ROMs at this moment , probably when new software will come up or super tweaks that require flashing ROMs , but definetely not now , we are still new and still learning about the Touch pro.I am seeing junior members building ROMs cause it is easy with this 288 MB RAM , I bet nobody was able to build ROMs for the Apache or the Mogul cause of the limited RAM.
we have a long way in improvement in touch pro before building ROMs.

Using MSCEInfo, I've been able to identify every registry change and file modification made by the Sprint PictureMail CAB and have undone them all to no effect. So, either some other routine is making changes related to PicMail or it's hardcoded into the ROM. Hopefully, it's not the latter...
Good luck and please let us know if you find out how to do it. I've pretty much given up and am just waiting to find a stripped down ROM for the Sprint Touch Pro that doesn't include PictureMail, Touch Guide Mobile or any of the other bloatware that Sprint decided we had to have.
Solution Removal Sprint Picture Mail
I found the solution this morning and I successfully removed the sprint picture mail and I also successfully added my yahoo mail
here what you need to do
1-install the sprint picture mail Cab
2-using resco file explorer or anything else go to windows folder
3-in resco explorer , unclick hide hidden files and unclick hilde file extensions
4-look for sprint picture mail cab , next to it you will find sprint picture mail.exe and some other files cary the same name.
5-this .exe is made by the second installation you just made not ROM related , but still you can not remove it ,for some reason.
so rename it into anything .exe , and do the same for the rest of the files including the cab , not delete them all you should be able to do so .
I did these steps exactly in that order and I opened the messages folder and I was soooo happy not seeing the picture mail account .
Good luck guys

Can you point out which specific cab you installed (was it just the one built into the TP ROM?) and which file(s) you removed to get this to work?
Also, can you confirm that this removed the Sprint PictureMail account from both the Outlook account list AND the Mail TF3D tab???

Well I seem to have completely broke my ability to get picmail so I'll hold back on any instructions. I'll do some more testing and may just have to install the freakn program again.... OR I might load up a bare bones ROM and load cab's I see fit, 1 will undoubtedly NOT make the cut.

Default Android Calendar

I've been using Gmail / Google Calendar for a while, so I was pretty excited to get an Android phone. I was rather spoilt though, as I'd been using Pocket Informant rather than the terrible Windows Mobile Calendar App. I really liked what I saw using the androidonhtc.com testing image.
Let's face it though, HTC's calendar app is an epic fail. The default Android calendar from the testing image was much better.
How can I reinstall the default android calendar? I've not been able to find a link to download the APK, and I did see one post saying someone hadn't been able to install it because there was a name conflict with the HTC cal.
I'm happy with the rest of TouchFLO - I don't want to go back to vanilla android, and I'm not terribly keen on a Hard-reset - but will if there's no other way.
Cheers,
I second that. Have been using pocketinformant on windowsmobile too, and can't understand why htc decided to implement the useless standard wm calender for the hero.
I definetly need the cupcake standard calender. Is there really no way to install it? Or is there a chance for pocketinformant Android version?
I'm not fussed about PI for Android - yes, it was good, but I think WebIS has gone for the market and is spending all of their effort developing for iPhone and blackberry.
The cupcake calendar had in its favour:
* Week view
* Proper day bars on the month view
* GCal look-and feel.
I'll be very happy if I can get it working instead.
Anyone?
Root your Hero and use adb push command to install the android default calender. Very easy and fully functional.

Here's how, following the root article on theunlockr.com
I used Astro File Manager to backup the HTC Calendar.apk and Calendar.obex
Code:
[email protected]: ~/androidsdk/tools$ ./fastboot devices
HT97GL903527 fastboot
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$ ./fastboot boot cm-hero-recovery.img
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY
booting... OKAY
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$ ./adb shell mount /system
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$ ./adb shell rm /system/app/Calendar.apk
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$ ./adb shell rm /system/app/Calendar.odex
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$ ./adb push Calendar.apk /system/app/
678 KB/s (325187 bytes in 0.468s)
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$ ./adb shell reboot
[email protected]:~/androidsdk/tools$
The only thing that doesn't work properly is on the month view, the title bar reads "2$s, 3$s - 5$s, 6$s" instead of the proper date.
Thanks for the help!
using Exchange sync
Can the default be used if your are integrated with Exchange?
What is so different between the htc calendar and the cupcake calendar. i'm new to android and trying to learn if someone can past screenshots or something.
Is the cupcake calendar really better than the htc calendar?
the cupcake calendar will show time bars for each day in the month view. That way you can see on the first glance how many meetings you have for every day.
the htc celander will only show one FLAG, which basically says "you have 1 or many meetings on this date". This is completely useless in the month view.
In example i have a daily meeting at work, and therefore the htc calendar will show me a flag on each day. So every month is filled with flags on the month view and i can't see when i actually have more than the daily meeting coming.
btw: i don't want to root my device, don't have the time and nerves to fix everything if something goes wrong. Isn't there ANY other way to get the old calendar? cant i find it somewhere in the hero rom, and just change some link parameters to get it opened by default?
Wow. The default calendar is SO MUCH faster and nicer.
Could we do the same for other apps, e.g. the alarm app or the contacts app? Can someone upload the .apk files for these?

Why would you want to change the alarm/clock app? They work just fine for me and looks great!
The problem I'm having after pushing the cupcake calendar is that there is this big bar across the top of the screen with a plus sign on it. It looks like it's supposed to be a button but the cupcake calendar isn't drawing it correctly.
:/ So I cant see the first few hours in day view..
Any fix?

"Root", on computer, means "Almighty administrator".
Rooting a Hero is just like removing Parental control to do funny things.
You can't do much on android without rooting :/
Risky... well, i'm pretty noob but i didn't had any problem. Just had to follow the steps explained on the rooting thread.
If you want to learn more about rooting, pros and cons, it's pretty well discussed on a bunch of threads around there.

no, PI stands for Pocket Informant which is the most powerful calendar app on windows mobile and iphone.
Hi,
Has anyone performed the Calendar change on a Hero running the new Generic 2.4 ROM published by MoDaCo?
I followed the instructions both in this thread and the one linked to above - while the phone was in recovery mode I removed Calendar.apk and Calendar.obex from /system/app and then pushed a new Calendar.apk file over into /system/app from a Cupcake ROM I downloaded (signed-kila-ota-150275.53dde318.zip from android.clients.google.com).
However, when I rebooted my phone there was no calendar app showing.
I have PureCalendar installed which should launch Cupcake calendar on click, but that did nothing (I changed the appropriate setting).
Trying the HTC Calendar widgets just caused an error - as they expect the HTC Calendar I imagine.
Thinking I might also need the Calendar.odex file I pushed that over, but with the same results.
I'm now back with the HTC Calendar (thank goodness I took a backup).
Any ideas? Do I need to install the new Calendar.apk (using Linda or similar?) to make it available? Was I using a bad version of Cupcake?
Any ideas welcome.

Editing ROMs

Hi all,
I am relatively new to the android community, so I don't feel confident playing around with large parts of ROMs, however I am interested in trying to edit a ROM so that it has as many of my apps and things as default to save room.
Idealy I would like my ROM to:
-Have only the apps I want and need, so I have started stripping out some I don't
-Have my background of choice and no others
-Have a custom launcher (I am looking at LauncherPro, although i understand this only works on android 2.0 and above so cant intergrate this yet)
I am using the stock T-mobile 1.5 custom ROM uploaded by Paul onto Modaco as the ROM I am editing (Sorry I cannot post a link as this is my first post)
Once I have completed this project I would like to create a tutorial to help other people new to the Android scene, who, like me, don't have the knowledge or confidence to edit the ROM majorly.
My first step is remove the unwanted apps and replace them with the ones I do want. So my first question is what apps are vital to androids running that I wont be able to delete. Also, where can I get the .apks of the apps I want to add in?
Any other help in this project will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx
Aaron
well you can check the wiki for refrence but i due know that you can remove apps like google apps gmail email market market updater .... just remeber not to delete them like remove them and move them to a safe folder on your desk top in case you removed a vital app ok thats what i do

Thanx. I have a copy of the original ROM and the one im editing just in case. Is it just a case of trying it out to see if it works and what i can and cant delete then?

Aaron
more or less but its better to know what your removing so check this site shttp://source.android.com/
http://forum.androidcentral.com/hacking/6037-general-rom-faq.html
You have to be careful what you are removing and changing. Removing google talk basically dissables the market which I am not sure why but it does. THere are other apps that are linked that you would not think about. You also must know how to resign the rom zip file. There is an app here called autosign and it works pretty good. Its for themers but it works for moding a rom too. If you want to replace the launcher simply delete the launcher.apk and add in the one you want. The wallpaper backgrounds are usually in the launcher.apk unless you are using a sense rom. Sense uses Rosie.apk and the wallpapers are all in htc.widgetpicker.apk (i think thats what its called).

[Q] Live Wallpaper help

Hello folks
I want to create live wallpapers for sale on the android market. I found a custom creator script and a lwp creator software that does this but I don't think it signs them. Now I am not sure if those could be sold on the market or not. I am still very new to android.
At the moment I am trying to start small, something simple like a looped animation sequence and make that a live wallpaper...just plain, with no settings. So what would be a good way to approach this mission ?
You could try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=739512. You could even try to make them on your phone with this: http://android.ownskin.com/livewallpaper.
Can I sell the apk that I get from custom creator or is there something I need to do before I upload it.

Make sure it's signed.
That's all ? Man thats simple. Here I was readying myself thinking I'm gonna need to brush up my old coding skills. Very nice. Thanks guy.
I would like to pack 2 live wallpapers in one apk. Is this possible ?
No, it's not unless you make an app which will allow selection of whichever one the user wants.
That sucks. I figured I'd provide 2 wallpapers as a pack for $0.99 because they are simple with no settings. There is no other way ?
I suppose I'll start with single ones and then eventually make an app.
Ok so I did some experiments, first apk was 80mb, second was 40mb and the newest one is like 400kb only. But it lags a lot. How do I optimize ?

Have you tried zipaligning them? See here: http://developer.android.com/resources/articles/zipalign.html.
I am just beginning installing eclipse and the steps that follow. I am still not sure how to open the apk to view what the code is. I was hoping I could see this code and then implement it in eclipse using a fresh project. Main thing I want to find out is how the image sequence loading is implemented. I guess I will post back here in a few days.
Should I code this in ICS or get the sdk files for 2.1 and do it on that ?

It depends on what you want. If you only want ICS (and later android versions to come) devices to support your wallpapers, then you can go ahead and code it in ICS. If you want a wider range of support (for now), then your 2nd option is best.
Well ideal case would be its backwards compatible. I've been reading and says ics has new api's...but I'm hoping the wallpaper and related services are backwards compatible. Its okay if its not, I get to learn at least.

It sure does, but most of them are not backward compatible. Notice only a few (approximately 3) apps built for ICS worked on Gingerbread so the chance is very small that they will support backward compatibility. They may be the same services, etc., but many will still require the ICS+ framework.
Interesting...so that means its safer to start from 2.1 for more than just backwards compatibility reasons. I just tried to grab api7 in sdk manager and it gave me error for file not found. Should I do 2.3.3 ?
Fixed it, 2.1 ready to go. Thanks.

[Q] Porting Sense 4.1 System Apps to i9300

Hi,
I currently run a Foxhound ROM on my S3 and it serves all my needs really well. However, the e-mail application on the device leaves much to be desired and a quick look at the Play Store has not provided me with any great alternatives (any app recommendations?). I have noticed that the email application that is part of Sense 4.1 is quite slick, and would ideally like to have that ported across to the ROM I use (or get an apk that is ROM agnostic). I have had a look across the various S3 forums and believe the HTC sense framework is required to run such apps, which might prevent such porting. Please can someone confirm if this is accurate? If not, can you please direct me towards any porting guides that already exist? Apart from the email app, I also quite like the look of HTC Sense's dialer, people and contacts app, but I guess email is a good place to start.
PS: I am a new member to the forum, and believe my access privileges prevent me from posting this on the 'Android Development' section
