So I've finally moved on, two years & five replacement titans, i've moved on. (to the hero).
I still have my titan though. I think it will be a very good gps system for my wife, though I don't want her to get confused because of the 'Phone' and 'SMS' apps. Is there anyway to install the classic version of WM6+? Will installing classic save any resources like memory or cpu because it won't be pinging the towers every few seconds?
fyi, i'll be using tomtom, so I don't need internet access to access maps
Did you get the GPS to lock reliably without any data connection? Mine won't and from what I've read it's pretty hard to get reliable GPS lock working without a connection.
If I get a lock and then turn off the connection it seems to work alright but I can't get the phone to lock reliably without one.

I rock Standalone mode on my Titan using Cricket (doesnt have Agps server). Unl33ts right, without Agps you will not get consistent lock times. But mine are anywhere between 10 sec and 1 minute. And honestly it works very well considering the RAM and circumstances.
To go Standalone you need to set up your GPSone settings using QPST to use the Standalone settings. And also set up your registry to use the same.
Install these on your PC (Computer) in order! Followed by a Computer Restart.
Active Sync 4.5 Windows XP (for Vista or higher use WMDC).
HTC Serial Drivers Windows XP (there are Vista drivers out there try Howardforums, and PPCgeeks).
QPST (look up how to use QPST or you can hurt your device).
To properly use QPST requires knowledge of what your MSL/SPC code is to be able to read from phone or write to phone.
Install these on your PPC (Phone) in order to Device Memory Only! Followed by a soft reset.
Diagnostic Program shortcuts (will appear in start/programs/diagnostic).
PHM regedit (in case the ROM you are using doesnt have a registry editor).
After you have everything installed and you rebooted both the PC and the PPC you can continue.
Disable USB connections in Active Sync connections settings (right click icon on computers taskbar).
Use my Diagnostic Shortcut (Diag Mode, DmRouter) to access Diagnostic Mode.. Let the window that opens close on its own before plugging into the computer.
Plug the PPC into the PC using a Main USB port built into your motherboard.
Open QPST configuration and add the particular port until your phone is detected as a Surf7500.
Then Open QPST Service Programming.
QPST Standalone settings:
Click read from phone and enter your MSL/SPC code.
Navigate to the GPSone tab (stay in that tab, write to phone when finished).
Uncheck [ ] all the Capability boxes and the Allowed box and then re-check them [x].
PDE IP address : 172.29.223.11
PDE Port Number : 8080
PDE Transport : IP
Position Calculation : Mobile
After, write to phone, close the QPST and dont save changes when it asks (especially if you ever open up a saved backup file), unplug the phone, close DMrouter, wait a minute or two and soft reset the device. When it boots back up time to edit the registry.
Registry location for SuplAgps settings: The <--Just shows you dword converted integer amounts for easy editing.. DO NOT include the <-- obviously..
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS]
"ServerPort"=dword:00001F90 <--8080
"ServerIP"="172.29.223.11"
"EnableAGPS"=dword:00000000 <--0
"EnableGPSSmartMode"=dword:00000000 <--1
"GPSMode"=dword:00000001 <--0
After all the edits close regedit and wait a minute or two and soft reset again. Voila! Standalone GPS.

Is it possible to sync using activesync over the internet without running an exchange server? I'd like to be able to sync my XDA while I'm out and about to my PC at home.
 :?: :?:
been trying to do the same for ages , but never found out how to do it
It can be done, under a few conditions:
1. You need to have a static IP address for you PC
2. You need to install Pocket Hosts or a similar free utility to map the WINS host name to your PC's IP address.
3. Your carrier / ISP must not have a firewall that blocks ports 5678 or 5679 (T-mobile seems to block this)
Remote active sync was designed with a local area network in mind and it is configured to connect to you computer by using the WINS name and not using an internet based DNS name. When you connect over an internet connection from your XDA, it is not able to find you PC.
If you install a free utility such as Pocket Hosts (http://zimac.de/cestuff.htm) you can configure the Pocket PC to be able to find you PC. This utility will allow you to configure you Pocket PC to map your PC Name to an IP address (similar to the HOST file on a Windows based PC)
Before I had the unlimited GPRS plan, I created a dial up connection to an ISP on my PocketPC Phone and it works perfectly. However, when I try the same thing over the GPRS connection, it does not work. From my end, it looks like T-Mobile blocks ports 5678 or 5679 on their firewall, which are the ports that remote active sync uses to complete the connection. (It looks like it is about to work, but then fails to complete the connection)
I have tried to convince t-mobile to fix this, but they keep claiming that it will not work out of the box, they don't know how to make it work, and they won't support it. They try to "upsell" me the sidekick or other device. I can't seem to get through to the right people. It seems crazy that a setting on their end blocks us from being able to sync over the air. After all, what is the point of a data connection if you are still restricted to using a cradle to sync. I understand that they don't want to support this and walk people through setting this up, but blocking the functionality seems pointless.
Anyone tested this on ATT? With number portability starting, I may have to explore other options. Anyone have an in at T-mobile that can get them to open up these ports on the firewall?
try www.yahoo.com
get an account (if you don't have one already)
login -- click on mail
the click the tab for addresses
on the next line to the right you will see the word "sync"
this will take you to download intellisync for yahoo
then follow instructions
sync you pda and your good to go, you will have your info on the internet and sync from anywhere
one more thing if youown a palm os and a pocket pc pda and you want to have both devices with same info (contacts, mail, notes etc. etc.)
the change the settings on your intellisync for your other device and resync
hope this helps it did for me...
Hi, I'm from the Philippines and my Network is SMART Communications. I tried synching with my active sync via GPRS but it seems it can't find my PC eventhough I used Pocket Hosts utility. It seems they block the port too. Anybody from Smart to please open the gate for us.
I've setup up my Win2k PC as dial-up server. And with the help of the Pocket Hosts utility, I can now be able to sync my Outlook over the air. But the call charges is killing me.
Jose
I've been investigating this myself too - and have to say T-Mobile's attitude is also alive and well here in the UK on O2 (via crapphone-whorehouse data support team).
I was actually shouted at by one of their 'tech' guys when I tried to persuade them that it could technically be done, but I needed to find out whether they were blocking the relevant ports. He eventually hung up on me! Fantastic service, eh!
I've been trying to get ActiveSync working over the Internet for the past few days and have finally managed to get it to work reliably. There are a couple of things that I have found...
Firstly, at least one of the ports required for ActiveSync does seem to be blocked when using GPRS (Vodadone UK in my case). Setting up a normal dial-up ISP connection results in first time connections to ActiveSync every time. It would be nice to know why there is problem over GPRS.
Secondly, my device was still connecting as Guest. Whilst reading through various other forums I found a fix that seem to work for this but it involves deleting a registry key. I wouldn't recommend it as I have know idea what else this key might be used for but it certainly solved the problem for me. The key I removed is HKLM/Ident/Username value is guest. The key is replaced automatically at some point (maybe after a reset) so if it stops working, you have to go and delete it again! There must be a better way....
That's great information, thanks.
I now have my device remote synching!
Just to summarise my steps to get things working on my XDA II:
1) XDA: Set up new work connection (don't you just hate the organisation of conenctions...) to a dial-up ISP over GSM, as O2 UK also block the ports required for activesync.
2) PC: Open sockets 990, 999, 5678, 5679 on my firewall
3) XDA: Use pockethosts to set up the IP address for my PC name
4) XDA: Change HKLM\Ident\User from guest to my normal PC logon user id
5) PC: Set allow network connections in activesync
6) XDA: Manually Connect to the ISP connection
7) XDA: Open activesync and click synch - away we go!
As an update to this, I had to do a full restore at the weekend after loosing all my data on the XDAII. The problem was not related to these changes but it made me look again at the Ident key. There are two keys normally like...
HKLM/Ident/Name Value<Your chosen PDA Name>
HKLM/Ident/OrigName Value<Pocket_PC>
This time I changed only HKLM/Ident/OrigName to the same value as in HKLM/Ident/Name and it connected first time. Also, this value does not seem to be reset unless you do a hard reset on the device. This may be better than changing the Username value though I have yet to try either on another computer where my preferred connection should actually be as a Guest.
Got it working
Thanks to andyclap's suggestions I finally got it working. It looks like T-mobile does not block any ports, but without the registry hack the error I got was the same as when I tested this over a dial up connection and blocked the ports on my firewall.
The other change since my last post is that I am using WM2003 and it requires you to set up a VPN connection to the PC instead of just using PocketHosts for the name resolution.

I have managed to get the athena working as a wireless access point using the technique from the above thread - I have connected an N95 and a toshiba portege successfully and browsed the internet through my athenas connection over wifi with ONE slight drawback - after about 5 seconds the wifi disconnects and I cannot browse any more - up until then it literally whizzes the page up. This is very frustrating as im sure the athena COULD provide very fast wireless internet to my laptop etc (based on these initial few seconds!)
All I want to know is has ANYONE managed to get this working with their athena? users of other handsets report success but I have tried everything and it just doesn't work...if you've got this working and staying connected then please post your exact procedure here
It works great, Here is what I did
I have gotten this working and it works pretty good except for it disconnects after 10 minutes but that is an Internet Sharing "Feature". The exacts procedures that I followed are:
1. I copy the attached .dll to the Windows/ directory.
2. I open up Internet Sharing and connect to Bluetooth PAN
3. I then go to Wifi settings then the Network tab and change the IP information for IEEE 802.11b/g Compatible Wifi to 192.198.1.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.0
4. I then go back to the Wireless tab and click "Add new"
5. I put in whatever network name. Check the box for "This is device-to-device..."
6. I turn off all data encryption and then press next, then finish.
7. The network should show connecting. I then connect my device. It probably takes about 20 seconds to establish the connection.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Do you have to repeat #1 each time?
Does this replace Bluetooth PAN?
Is there anyway to automate any part of this process?
THANKS!!
but HOW?
It seems so easy that I'm ashamed to ask ... well almost!
How did you managed to copy the dll in the \WINDOWS directory?
I have tried, and tried and gave up. Al I got every time is access denied.
Where is it the magic?
Thanks for a brilliant idea.
You do not have to redo step 1 every time and it does replace the Bluetooth PAN. Make a copy of the original .dll file from your windows/ folder first. That way you can just copy it back overif you need to use Bluetooth PAN. Right now they are working on editing the Internet Sharing application to create a whole new chose for Wifi access point. Also there is no program yet to automate this whole process. There are some people who are working on it. I will post to this thread when they release something.
I used activsync to do it. If you use normal file explorer it won't work. If activsync doesn't work download the trial of resco explorer. It will allow you to do it.
the procedure i implemented is a little simpler and simply involves clicking on a mortscript which is provided in the original link. It automatically overwrites the dll and initiates internet sharing. You do not need bt pan selected - it will work with usb also. (you will also need mortscript 4.0 on your ppc but this is easy to google. You will also need to create an ad hoc connection as per the thread above. You then run the mortscript and turn on wifi. (it MUST be done in this order to work). When i first posted this thread it would connect perfectly but subsequently the 'wifi connected' symbol would turn into a triangle and no further downloading would be possible from the connected computer (all this within a few seconds). Now today i did a hard reset of my athena, followed the procedure again and it works perfectly! I also turned off power save mode. I tested by connecting an n95 and the speed is great, connection was maintained for the full hour until i disconnected - even when the devices were left for ten minutes. I tested the mortscript on a tytn following the same procedure. This device is running windows black satin. Again the disconnect problem occurred despite initial success. This leads me to believe that either a program or setup procedure is causing this bug. It certainly needs further investigation

I just used WifiRouter ( use search it's posted in several threads ) works great only thing i found is that you sometimes have to like either open your browser to force a data conenction to happen or use gprs monitor to initiate the connection then wifirouter picks up on that and sets everything from there. I must admit the extra step is a pain as it worked without the need of it with my former vario II, but will not complain as works great. only other thing i always do is under the wireless settings i set for Best Perfomance as beest battery wil have it drop the connection after periods of no activity.
I've scoured the forums and the net but can't find how to turn off the "Enable advanced network functionality" in Windows Mobile 6.5.
I loaded my first WM6.5 ROM a while back and need to update it but can't get sync'ed to load the update.
Please point me in the right direction, I've lost most of my hair already, bout to pull the rest out.
Thanks in advance.
Settings>Connections>USB. I always turn it off too since it causes issues with VPN, firewalls, wireless, and is just plain annoying since every device you connect then creates a hidden hardware entry on your PC for the network connection and the device/usb connection.
What is also funny, is most Vista machines require this "new" setting to be turned off to connect as well.
Here's a link in case you want to get rid of those pesky extra device manager entries.

Had that already, that is how I knew about them all. Just a pain to delete them, and after 50+ are on your machine it seems to start to slow things down.
Whenever I tether my laptop via the USB cable it takes a long time for the laptop to connect and when it does, it says "Connected to Network X", where X is a number. Everytime I reconnect via USB X increases by 1 so the last time I did it I was on Network 43!!!!! I accept that this could be in part a windows thing and not a GS3 thing BUT when I connect via a Wifi Hotspot it connects really really quickly and always says I am connected to AndroidAP. Its as if the USB tethering firmware is
Therefore connecting via hotspot seems much more stable and smooth however I was under the impression that the laptop internet speed will be quicker using USB tether rather than wifi and as I primarilly use my SGS3 as my home broadband connection I want to try and configure it to get the fastest speed on my laptop as possible. If I do an internet speed check on my SGS3 while my laptop is tethered the phone connection is always faster than the doing the same on the laptop. I guess this should be perhaps expected but as much as 4Mbits/s. I.e My phone was getting speeds of 6Mbits/sec but without having any apps open on the phone, my laptop would only get 2Mbits/s????
Any advice?

It does not related to Device problem.
It related to Windows, your computer create a new network when each time you connect to internet.
This may due to Firewall,Antivirus etc..
Are there any apps out there which are better than the stock USB tethering method. I do get slightly faster speeds on the laptop when USB tethered but the Windows network methodolgy seems unsatble compared with the wifi hotspot method
I was suffering the same and finally found a solution for this (at least on my S2).
It requires root, plus a kernel that supports init.d scripts (or running a script yourself every time you start the phone and will want to tether before restarting).
Just run this script:
Code:
chmod u+w /sys/module/g_android/parameters/dev_addr
echo 5a:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx > /sys/module/g_android/parameters/dev_addr
chmod u-w /sys/module/g_android/parameters/dev_addr
Just replace xx's with whatever hex values (0-9 or a-f) you want. Example: 5a:10:20:30:40:50
Windows detects the network you're connecting to by identifying the MAC address of the gateway. It can then know whether you're connecting to your home router (safe), an internet cafe (public), etc.
Whenever it finds a gateway whose MAC address is not recorded yet, it will state it's an unknown network, ask you what type is it (home / public), and assign a new number to it.
The thing is that android (or at least mine) is generating a completely random MAC address for itself whenever tethering is turned on, and naturally that will be different every time.
If you run those commands above, you're overriding that randomness and the device will start having always that MAC address and Windows will remember you're connecting to the same gateway.
PS: This is obviously dependent on whether the kernel you're using includes that /sys/module/g_android/parameters/dev_addr file. I'm inclined to think it's standard, but I'm not sure.
I'm having the same "problem".
Is there any other (nicer) way to permanently disable that random MAC generation? Other than using the method Tungstwenty explained above. Does anyone know why is that android "feature" even implemented, it doesn't make much sense to me.
Has anyone else figured out any solutions to this besides running a script everytime you boot? Seems kinda crazy to have to go to that extent for something that should be standard...
^ Exactly. Any updates yet?

I can confirm that the same issue happened on my new Xperia Z, and the solution I posted above has also solved it.
The new device was even recognized by Windows as the already identified router, since I reused the same value from the previous device.
So I agree it's a cross-device issue with apparently the same solution, at least in a few of them.

From the path ("...tether...") it's likely that it might be the right one for your device.
Simply try running the commands manually from an ADB shell and seeing if it works for you. If it does, put it on an init script. If not, it should be gone after a reboot.
A possible solution
For Windows to recognize your mobile device as the same first one needs to create a bridge in Windows 7.
Open Network Connections by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, click View Network Connections.
Hold down the Ctrl key and Select internet connection from your android phone with your alternate connection you usually use. If you use only your android phone for internet, just select the mobile device.
Hold down ALT to reveal Advanced Menu and click Bridge Connections. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
You should now have a new network type named "Network Bridge" created.
Leave this internet bridge on your system.
Now whenever you connect your android phone, it will show up as the same network connection always. This will stay so even after you restart your system.

Hey MaxMumbai.....
what about windows 8.1.....? The right click on the network adapter in question in win 8.1 reveals 'Bridge connections' in the menu.
Can you make this much clearer please "Hold down the Ctrl key and Select internet connection from your android phone with your alternate connection you usually use. If you use only your android phone for internet, just select the mobile device."
You need at least 2 LAN connections to make a bridge so how can I only select my mobile device connection....? This is what I have in my adapters panel :
Bluetooth Network Connection .... Not ConnectedX
Ethernet.... Network cable unpluggedX
Local Area Connection..... Remote NDIS based internet sharing device (this is my tether)
WiFi... Not Connected X
Can you please explain where I make the bridge....?
Cheers

You can try this if you don't mind the network icon not showing that you're connected.
Open Registry Editor ( Windows key + R to bring up the Run dialog, then type regedit and press Enter ).
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
There are numbered subkeys starting with 0001. Look in each subkey in descending order for the one with the DriverDesc value having your smartphone's RNDIS driver name (same name shown in your Network Connections view as the "Connect using" value).
Once located, create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Enter the name as *NdisDeviceType (remember to include the asterisk sign * in front).
Edit the newly created DWORD value and enter the value data as 1 (Base choice doesn't matter). Click OK.
Once done, disable and re-enable usb tethering
You will no longer get a prompt asking for network location whenever you connect your smartphone, but you will still get the prompt when connecting to other devices.
Important Note: When you are only connected to your smartphone, your computer's network icon will continue to show that you are not connected to any network. However, the internet will still work fine.
I just found an easier way to avoid windows (10) to generate a new network number and reset the settings:
Tether your phone using USB, then:
Open device manager and find "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device"
Then go to properties, advanced, select network address and assign a value.
That's it.

Open device manager and find "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device"
Then go to properties, advanced, select network address and assign a value.
That's it.
Click to collapse
This seems to work, as long as you don't restart your PC. After every restart it still counts 1 Number up.
Still a neat trick as long as the PC keeps running, thanks for posting it :good:
I am still searching for a better one....
Hi All
I have an ex T-Mobile HTC HD2 running windows 6.5 and connected to O2.
Mostly everything works fine except . . . . .
When I try to download an MMS message the phone tries to use the T-Mobile network and as this is not set up, it doesn;t work.
It tries to use t-Mobile even when connected to wifi
I have tried getting onto the network manager but all the T-Mobile settings are greyed out. and there is no option to delete the entry (edit, press and hold gives no options).
Network manager is set to use O2 (Connect to internet and Private network)
So, please, how do I get rig of T-Mobile and default to O2.
I presume it some registry hack?

Try downloading & install this connection settings tool by HTC >
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=565785&d=1302516709
Once installed it will have a shortcut link in Settings, Connections, Connection Setup
Run it & choose country 'UK' & network provider 'O2' *be sure choose postpay or prepay*
It should load all setting including MMS.
If have issues post back for more help.
Another good option would be debranding your HD2 with either standard generic HTC ROM or Custom ROM such as Energy, links can be found in HD2 Wiki > http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_HD2#ROM_Development
Thanks for that.
Sadly not a huge success. cab downloaded and installed.
Run, reset, set up connection, reset etc
Eventually Settings, Connections, Connection Setup select O2 postpay and another restart just in case
Then
Wireless Controls, Data Connection, but it wont conect. (Slider wont go green)
Wifi Conection greyed out.
Total mess.
Back to Conection Setup and check but its set to UK, O2 postpay
I have Data Controller installed but that allows all O2 (MMS postpay and mobile web)
At least I could access the www before
How do I get out of this mess

I would try removing data controller as that has some known issues of messing up the connection settings in registry.
I use GB-SOFT GPRS UMTS tweak which auto disconnects gprs when not used (set time to zero).
So in review >
remove Data controller & soft reset
Go into Settings>Connections>Connections>select 'manage existing connections' & delete any settings remaining
re-run Connection Setup & see if works !
I've never had trouble on provider roms such as T-Mobile so assume will be messy registry problem.
If no joy, post again & I will try dig up a guide & settings for O2 for manually trying input GPRS & MMS.
Good fix would be Custom WM6.5.5 such as one in my signature.
hhhmmm struggling. I can find no sensible way of uninstalling the Data controller. There is no entry on the list of programs to uninstall and I cant identify a directory.
There is a shortcut that points to \Windows\DataController.exe but is removing the program enough?
Good news is that I can Wireless stuff now works (My fault, I had forgotten they dont work when usb is connected to PC) So the only problem is MMS. Mor efiddling around, reran the HTC thing. Deleted an old connection and reboote a couple of times and eventually it worked.
And they call this a science!!
Thanks for you help
^ So is MMS now working !
If not I will post a manual MMS settings guide I have for WM6.5 somewhere.
Just removing the datacontroller.exe wouldn't be enough really, what really wanted is registry for it removed.
From your comments sounds like was mainly dirty connection settings in registry.
Data & MMS connections can be bit of a pain in WM6.5 but once learned manually or if the htc connections settings tool works perfectly they are better than android or iphone for flexibility & control.
