since i am the sporting kind, i need a "usable" device- not one i need to pamper!
coming from the good old p3300 / artemis i am close to selling my topaz since the plane display constantly touches any surface that i carry it in, the back with its all shiny plastic is a pure (pun intended) pain!
all in all this device has far too much plastic, especially this terrible screen surface!, to even survive the next year, whereas my P3300 has lasted me a good 4 years with quite some battering.
calling the topaz a diamond surely is a joke: not even the slightest amount of solidity allowing any kind of resemblance with a diamond!!!
so, any remedies for that? (to keep me from selling it again!)

I have no idea. Maybe a nice case + screen protector? I know what you mean, though. My blueangel has lasted me 5 years and is still going strong, while the TD2 probobly will not last half that long.

this would sure be a solution...but i remember seeing an iphone having worn one of these for 2 months:
all contact points of iphone and shield were matted /scratches due to the housing constantly rubbing at those points

I know what you mean, my old P3300 with its recessed screen and mostly matt plastic body was fairly sturdy, although I did wear the silver part off on the back!
BUT, and its a big but, the P3300 is several years old, very slow, low capacity internal memory, poor screen (plus smaller) etc...
I wouldn't go back to it unless I had to, I've got the supplied screen protector on my TD2 and apart from the back (which I think we all can agree is terrible) it shows no signs of wear.
There are plenty if cases out there, try one or two out for size.
I have had my Topaz since April, I tend to keep it in a case and always use a screen protector, it has been dropped onto concrete (with and without case), got wet (in rain not full immersion) left in a hot car for 6 hours and sat on! Apart from 1 small ding in the top right corner you cannot tell it from new. I do get annoyed about the finger prints on the back though
I'm personally using a PDair silicone cas end a screen protector, these don't add too much bulk while giving a degree of protection. They will not protect from water or a lot of dust, but work fine for me. From what you say perhaps an aluminium case/sleeve similar to what I've seen for iPods would work?

You are clearly looking for this website which specialises in ruggedised PDA and computer equipment.
Understand that in order to be able to withstand harsh environments, any electronic device will be lower specified (as high spec components produce more heat), be heavier and bulkier (to accommodate impact and water resistance), and more than likely less "every day" functional than a consumer-oriented product. You may, however, find that they include features not associated with consumer devices.
EDIT: I've just re-read your comment, and want to point out a common misconception regarding the properties of diamond. It is indeed a very hard substance substance, but that does not make it particularly strong. A diamond coating on the screen will definitely help stop scratches on the surface, but won't protect it from impact in the same way a rubberised coating would.
Hard substances resist abrasion; Strong substances resist deformation. A diamond cannot be scratched by any other known substance other than another diamond, but if you hit one with a hammer it will shatter.
On e-bay they sell a hard plastic rubberized case.
These add almost no bulk and it recesses your screen a bit.
Unfortunately, when I bought mine, it was only offered from Japan, so I still have not received it yet, but I have used them on other devices and they work great. In addition to the Zagg protector ofcourse.

I'll start this thread in the hope that there'll be some good news soon.
I got my Touch Cruise on Friday and the device is absolutely fantastic but there is one huge problem with it. Using it either with the bare screen or with the screen protector supplied in the box, the smudges that get onto the screen are a real issue. It's not a case of cleaning it every day when you get home, it really is a case of pulling out a perfectly clean device, flicking up the cube to fire up the calculator, doing 60 seconds of calculations and then putting it away and even after that the screen is covered with smudges to an extent that bugs me. The saving grace is that, if a good screen protector can help solve this problem, then it's easy to apply as an aftermarket solution.
Do other people see the issue to the extent I do? (And my hands are actually fairly dry, I often have issues getting through fingerprint recognition at US immigration because there isn't enough grease on my fingertips.)
I'm told that Brando are working on a protector and I just had a quick play with my old O2 XDA Orbit which has a good screen protector on it (not a Brando but one of their big competitors whose name I forget but is another make that people tend to recommend) and it seemed to me that it was picking up far less muck than my TC one so maybe Brando or someone can ride to the rescue on this one.

I use the supplied one without any problems different from any protector I have used. Just get the Veripart screen cleaner and clean your screen with it about once a week. looks like it leaves a coating on the screen. I am not sure about that, but my screen is shiny and nice

Ah. Thanks for that. I was trying to do the right thing by posting into the "Accessories" sub-forum so that is where I looked for a previous thread but I did just find the other thread in the main Polaris forum, funnily enough not by looking through the forums but because that thread is the second hit on Google when I did a global search for "veripart screen cleaner" as a result of your reply. I'll definitely try Veripart.
Re: "how can you get smuges from a non-greay finger", I guess they're not totally non-greasy, just less greasy than average .
I'll still get a new screen protector for my TC though because the one that came with my device seems to have a little bit of adhesive missing right down in the bottom left corner, luckily only on the bit that covers the screen surround but, because it won't stick down, it makes it look as if there is a water stain on the device. I also find that the factory screen protector does dull the sensitivity of the screen a bit.

I found out that Brando will come out with two types of screen proctectors of which on is anti-glare. That's the one I want to try.

I just experimented some more with my old (now dead) Artemis. Obviously with the device being dead all I can do is wipe my fingers and thumb around the screen with it switched off and then look at how marked it is. This is actually just fine though because the marks show up most when the device is off so the fact that the device doesn't power on isn't really an issue for these tests!
Anyway, I found the email confirmation for when I first placed the order and it was a Martin Fields Overlay Plus Screen Protector and my experiments above confirm in my mind that a good screen protector does make a huge difference as far as fingermarks are concerned, my old Artemis with the Martin Fields protector seems to pick up maybe 10% of the fingerprints compared to the in-the-box HTC protector on my Touch Cruise under about the same amount of finger dragging on each screen.

No, I'm not buying before I see it how it looks like. As I wrote above, I ordered one from eBay. It is 0.5mm more narrow than the screen area. But the worst is, there's not a hole in the surface for the secondary camera - there's a whole area cut out, like with scissors. Otherwise, the surface seems pretty diffuse. I haven't tried it yet, because if I remove and ruin my current protector and I don't like the new one, I won't have any

Brando's version is unfortunately like the one ingenious got off of eBay - with the large cutout vs. individual holes. Can't imagine it would have been that hard to cut them properly I'd prefer Brando quality with HTC fit.

I bought one from Brando's for my Orbit 2.
Quality is top as usual.
But:
I think they do the large cutout to make them fit to both, the cruise and the orbit 2.
The result is: You can use them for both device, but they do fit perfect neither for the polaris nor for the orbit 2.
Especially with the orbit 2 there is a large gap at the top of the protected area.
So I have to say, I was used to get better quality from brando's

I ordered the more expensive ("self-healing") protector from Durasec and found it had the same problem as the Brando anti-glare protector: it refracts the light coming from the touchscreen, giving the pixels a broken-up, rainbow effect. Not nice or useful.
Guess I'm going to buy some more HTC ones, even though I ended up crumpling the first one out of frustration (bubbles, dust, etc).

I've first put the one delivered by HTC with the Polaris. Except the fact that the sticker perfectly match with the Polaris Form, it need to be cleaned at least 50x per day..
I've finally buy a set of universal screen protector. Of course you've to cut it by yourself, but the quality is pretty excellent and the price is really competitive (5 pieces for a price less than for 1 brando).

Why the HTC ones rather than the Brando Ultraclear? The thing I hate about the HTC protector is that it is no better than a bare screen as far as fingerprints are concerned. There is a thread running in the main Polaris forum (although a request has been made to the moderators to move it here) where other people are confirming how awful the HTC protector is re fingerpriints and also that the Brando UltraClear, although not as good as the AntiGlare regarding resistance to fingerprints, is a definite improvement on the HTC protector.
I confess that I'm still using the HTC protector but that's because I put it on my device immediately and now it's on I'm waiting a bit to decide what to replace it with. I don't like the Brando cutout but I think if pushed now I'd probably buy one of each Brando and see if I could live with the optical distortions of the AntiGlare and, if not, then use the UltraClear.

P.S. I share your frustration re fitting these things; one of my least favorite activities.
I didn't try the Brando 'ultraclear' one -- I guess because I used one of these on a PDA years ago and found it to be 'ultraglare'. If I were sitting anywhere near sunlight, the screen became a mirror.
I suppose in the time since that's just become normal, as screens like the Touch Cruise are very shiny.
Looking at the various posts I think I'll go with the Brando UltraClear...
10$ + 3$ shipping is not so expensive (let's hope it will not be trapped by customs, in France that's pretty expensive even for a 10$ order).
Anyone aware about a way to get them from a European reseller instead of ordering directly to Brando in HK?

DuraSec protectors
Hello all....
as i promised earlier i would report back once i got my DuraSec protectors and let you know how they are.
i just got them last night, so i ripped my HTC OEM one off, and put the cheaper "ClearTec" one on. on first impression, it is a slight bit TOO thin, as it is quite hard to get on without flipping and flopping around. Which in the end causes many small bubbles.
After some fiddling, i have it on looking semi-OK, and it doesnt mess with the screen clarity, nor refract light in any strange way that i can tell.
i do have a feeling that it will not last very long... but then again they market it as a temp. protector.
i will get back when i use the "HighTec".....
This is a possible way to improve the standard HTC screen protector which I'm pretty happy with except for one big issue, it offers absolutely no additional resistance against getting fingerprints all over the screen when not using the stylus and this is a big frustration for me.
Recently I decided to clean my protector using regular window cleaner that you can buy in supermarkets (I'm in the UK so I used "Non smear Windolene for glass and shiny surfaces"). I now only bother to wipe down the screen with a cloth every few days rather than after every few minutes of use which is what I had to do before (and yes, I do wash my hands very regularly!).
It's probably partly due to the fact that I've got better at remembering to try to use the fingernail side of my fingers rather than my fingertips but I think that a large part of it is due to the cleaner leaving some sort of coating because even when I deliberately do a few swipes with my thumb, which before would have left marks after even a single swipe, it is now pretty clear.
I didn't spray the cleaner straight onto the device by the way, that just seemed too risky, so I sprayed it onto a paper kitchen towel and then used that to apply the cleaner onto the screen.
For me I think this has improved things sufficiently that I might well just stay with the supplied protector.

I've had a Vodafone UK TP2 for about a month.
I'm using an InvisibleShield, but no case. The reason for that is that I wear jeans to work, not a jacket (in summer, at least) and the extra bulk of a case pushes the phone into unacceptable territory. I don't carry a briefcase or a man-bag or a backpack, either. All I carry in my jeans pockets are money (no wallet), a credit card, the remote-control for my car and my phone. I leave both my house and my car keys in my car. I REALLY hate being laden down with cr*p.
I'm pretty careful not to put my phone in a pocket with money, though sometimes I do forget and there are a couple of coins.
So, after a month in a fairly gentle environment, I have:
1) A piece of the fake chrome fascia round the screen has flaked off;
2) One of the lame speaker grilles on the rear has completely caved in; and:
3) Worst of all, today, the screen-covering right by the earpiece has started to peel up. I'm not talking about the InvisbleShield, I'm talking about the actual screen itself.
I don't think this is good enough. I had an iPhone 3g before this, and I treated it the same and it still looks good as new. I also have (right in front of me) three HTC winmo phones, going back more than two years, and they're fine, too (though I admit that one of them has the same flaking problem with the fake aluminium).
I really like this phone and I like my carrier (one of my major reasons for changing from 02/iPhone - Vodafone definitely has stronger coverage). But at this rate the TP2 will fall to pieces long before my contract expires.
I'm now using a nylon case that came with my Logitech mouse to protect the phone, but even that adds a tad more bulk than I want in my jeans pocket. Plus it's not exactly easy to whip it out of my pocket to answer a call.
Okay, nothing has affected the functionailty, but it's not nice having a phone that's starting to look battle-scarred after just a month!
You could've gotten a bum unit...get a replacement (Vodaphone does it without any effort if you are within the 30 day return/replacement). Why not get a case/wallet combo? http://myworld.ebay.com/wiwaycn/ has a few cases which has room for the TP, thus keeping it safe, and slots for money/creditcards/single keys.
Tx for that - I might ask Vodafone for a new one though I'm just outside 30 days.
As to the wallet, not for me. Way too bulky. A nice thin sock-thingy is whaty I need...

I have the same handset from the same supplier, i also always wear jeans (i hate being suited and booted) again for just over a month and it still looks brand new.

I have ordered a Streak 5 for wifey and me yesterday. but am very concerned about the quality of the LCD screen which breaks easily based on postings online. Is it true? Did Dell do anything since launch to change its design/assembly to avoid this problem? I'm careful, but don't want it to break if I drop it say once on a carpeted floor which might happen over the course of a year..
I would like to hear from people who have had it over several months and if it runs fine. Coz most of the time people would post only if something negative happens. That's why I'm asking.

anyway I personally think that when came the day that good old Allfather Steve J. F'ker thought it would have been a nice idea to add an actual glass screen to his iphone we all got screwed big time. sure it's more resistent to scratches, but damn it's as fragile as, well, glass!
an item meant to stay all day with you in your pocket, car, desk, workplace, pub and whatnot simply cannot afford to use such fragile materials. and the hell to those ridiculous test with the average engadget writer stabbing devices with a pen, the bottomline is: you drop it, 50% chance you'll cry like a baby

Couple of things
Look, I can tell you couple of things about the screen.
1. The Stress test, practically speaking, means NOTHING! you see, its how much bad treatment the glass can take.
That is exactly where they try to make it look like it can take on anything.
But, notice, that everything is like a controlled test rig!
they never tell you about the Falls/trips/Sit_on_it_effects!
2. You have to be ultra cautious & conscious while handling it,
in the sense, do NOT be clumsy!

I mean you can bang all you want while typing and playing games and all,
but you do NOT want to drop it, while talking/pulling out of pocket.Most probable scenarios where you may drop the phone:
Pulling out of the pocket/ Keeping it inside your pocket
While putting on charging/ removing from charging!
While receiving a call.
Ending a call.
Surprisingly while playing games/typing you are not so prone to drop your phone, (perhaps, cuz, you are so conscious about it!)
One thing more:
You should hear from the folks who dropped it too! to know what you should NOT do !!
(not that you would do any such thing on purpose!)

The Streaks LCD itself is a bit on the weak side. The outer Gorilla Glass sounds nice but does very little to protect the LCD from bending. Most people that replace the LCD still have their Gorilla Glass intact.
I would recommend that you refrain from putting your streak in a pants pocket
and use a case that adds some support around the device. Mine cracked in my pocket just driving to the store and home. It must have bent when I sat in the car. Definitely not not a gel skin type case like I had Otterbox Impact Case = Bad . I now use an Otterbox Defender case ( Has a belt Clip too )
All bets are off if any device is ever dropped but the Streak is sensitive to bending due to its dimensions compared to a 'normal' phone so just be aware of it and you should be fine. It is an awesome phone/mini tablet.

My current phone is a n900 and it has glass screen also. I have a rubberized outer cover and have dropped it a few times even though I'm very careful for the most part! Nothing has happened to it until now.

When I got my Streak, I was really worried about breaking the lcd, I carried it in a front empty khaki pants pocket, then got an Otterbox Defender Case.
Good: Dropped it twice on pavement with no damage to device, Great Protection/adds a little bulk but worth it.
Bad: Adds A little bulk to the device, the bely clip and case are kind of big on the belt, the drops were indirectly caused by the belt clip ejecting the phone while exiting a vehicle. would i even consider using the Streak without serious protection, NO WAY!

Basically the streak screen isn't anymore fragile than any other phone, if you drop it from say over 4 foot onto a hard floor it will most likely break. Remember though the screens are only 28 pounds and very easy to replace yourself. I'm not scared of how fragile it is. It holds up pretty well to bumps and tumbles.

I'm not sure what 28 pounds means. Is that all the force they can take in an impact?
I've got one of the Otterbox defender cases but I'm very careful where I put my phone. Despite that I once sent it flying out of my hand. It hit the carpeted floor like 5 feet away and there was no damage. I was very happy.

You know.. I gotta say, I absolutely love the build quality on this thing.. I was worried about not having a case for it at first..
But, my girlfriend accidentally dropped it like christmas even and that is the only scratch on the thing.. it is a small nearly unable to be noticed scratch on the very bottom right side. And that was onto a brick fireplace by total fluke. (She didn't realize the box wasn't sealed shut and it somehow popped out.)
After having this thing nearly a month, it being in my backpack a few times, my pocket and other places..
I see no scratches dings or anything.. which is pretty impressive. While I have taken pretty darn good care of it.. normally by now you will have something on any given piece of electronic.
Are the HTC phones this good? I'd honestly consider settling for lower specs in the future as long as the build quality was this good... Naturally I have and would use a screen protector but, I must say I am very happy with the current no scratch goodness of my tablet.
Yes, they are built well. I did drop mine from about 3-4 feet and it hit a corner in a case on a hard floor and the LCD went bad. I replaced it and all is well.
I dropped mine down a crack on a sleeper sofa and it put a nice gouge on the side of the tablet, but otherwise it's pretty good. Got a little nick on the screen as well. But otherwise, it certainly feels like a premium device.
Dropped mine screen first on a parking lot. Only a corner was scratched.
HTC is the best. I can't believe the majority of people think Iphones in the same league. You can't even mount it as a flash drive for christ sakes, you have to go through Itunes, after you have to update it every week or it doesn't work lol.
I'll probably get thrown off the forums for admitting this, but I'm an iPhone / Mac user and the View has really impressed me in terms of build quality. HTC's software "improvements", on the other hand... :/

All of these products are designed to enhance our lives in ways ranging from fun to productivity.
While we may disagree on preferences or reasons to use certain products, none are really more or less valid than anyone elses.
I don't deny personally having a strong dislike of Apple products, but they are gadgets not a religion.

you should still get the screen protector as its screen is not a gorilla glass.....more so if you are using pen a lot.....you will get the scratch sooner than later bro! and there are quite a few clear screen protectors around, so grab one!

Absolutely get a screen protector. They also help reduce glare (if you go with a matte one) which is a real problem with this tablet if you like to watch movies.
I had a screen protector on my Nook Color also, and just before I sold it I put a deep gouge into it by pushing too hard on a cheap capacitive pen. Thanks to my screen protector I was able to sell the Nook with a clean screen, rather than one with a deep gash.
I have a screen protector, but no case on my Flyer. The powder coat aluminum casing seems really durable, and I've been really impressed with it. I've owned it since June I think. I can't seen any scratching on it, despite being laid on tables constantly.
My Desire Z phone has a brushed aluminum battery cover on back, which has a lot of superficial scratches. But the soft touch plastic around it does not show scratches. Every HTC phone is a bit different (a few too many different design, some might say). But in general, they have the highest quality casing design in the business, IMO.

Yeah, I can't count how many times I've set my tab on a table and I feel something scraping the bottom that I didn't see when I looked at the table..
Scared the crap out of me the first few times.. I am quite pleased to have no scratches from it yet.

Tottaly agree. I really like the build quality of the HTC Flyer. The HTC Flyer is my first permanet tablet. I started with a Samsung 8.9 but it went back to the store.
I had an amazon gift card to use up, and we're planning a road trip to a waterpark so I decided to use the gift card to try and find a waterproof/water-resistant solution for my lte. I wasn't going swimming with these, but I did want to protect my phone from the the occasional dunk or splash, and I didn't trust a ziplock bag to do the job. I also didn't want to spend a lot (otherwise I would have gotten the overboard case).
I ended up ordering the following cases;

The plastic material seems strong on this case, and the seal seems like it would do a good job to keep the moisture out. The evo slides in and out easily, even with a tpu case, although it does it need to go in upside down if you want to take pictures - otherwise the camera is blocked by the opaque section of plastic, but this is not a big deal. There is a raised seal around the window of clear plastic (which takes up about 4/5ths of the phone screen) that makes pulling the unlock ring a little difficult, but not impossible. This is the biggest of the cases, with the most space around the phone. Screen responsiveness through the plastic is good, and the the window is clear, so its easy to see the phone screen. Lanyard runs through the width of the case, and seems very strong - I don't see it snapping or anything.

This one looks very similar to the higher priced overboard case and has great reviews. The areas surrounding the clear windows are puffy, as if it would allow the case to float. Unlike the other cases (which use a combination of two ziplock-type closure zips), this one has a plastic mechanical mechanism to squeeze and hold the opening shut like a vise. I don't know if I would trust this case to remain underwater for any length of time. It doesn't seem to seal as well as I would like, although the reviews all rave about how watertight it is. Having said that, the phone fits in this case perfectly with the tpu case, and even better without a case (upside down again), without being too snug, and the clear windows are exactly the size of the phone screen - only the capacitive buttons are hidden. Screen responsiveness through the plastic is good, and the the window is clear, so its easy to see the phone screen. The puffy areas around the clear screen also do a really good job of holding the phone in place, but makes it a bit difficult to press the power button. The lanyard that this case with end in what appears to be a thread that you loop through an opening in the case and seems like a good tug would snap it off.

I was only going to get the black one, but when I saw the blue one for a penny, I decided why not. These are identical cases, but one is black, and one is blue. These are the snuggest cases, and its a challenge to get the phone in, even without the tpu case. The plastic material the cases are made of is very tacky on the inside, so the phone tends to get stuck when you put it in or take it out. The plastic also seems thinner on these than the other cases, and the seals around the edge don't seem very reliable. Once the phone is in though, it's the most compact and pocketable of all of the cases. These cases do not have a clear window on both sides, so if you want to use the camera, then the phone screen will be covered by the translucent side of the case. It's not too bad, and the screen is still visible, but in bright situations, this could be an issue. Having said that, screen responsiveness is very good with these cases, most likely due to the thinness of the plastic. Lanyard goes through hole in the case and seems strong enough. These also come with an arm band that may fit you if you have the arms of a small child. They're really, really small.
Final thoughts - All of these would probably do a good job to keep water and moisture off of the phone (or even sand if you're going to the beach), and I think any of them would be fine to protect against accidental splashing. If I was going diving or swimming with my phone, I would probably shell out the extra cash for the overboard, or at least do some serious waterproof testing on these first. As it stands, I think I'll end up using the first case - Not too crazy about the blue, but I think it will do the best job of keeping the phone dry, and I won't need to worry about going down the log flume with it in my pocket or around my neck (like a tourist, lol).

I do suggest you update the prices in your post to include the shipping though for a better cost comparison (even though the difference here is minimal). So many venders inflate the shipping to make up the difference for a $0.01 item.
p.s. I'm going to pick up the first one as well since it looks like I can easily have it in my pocket as a just in case. (I'm in Florida and we have crazy torrential thunderstorms out of no where, so if I'm out jogging, I can have it in my pocket just in case.
Though expensive, Lifeproof cases are really nice. Ive known many people to go out in the ocean and take pictures under water with them.
Just an update, I did end up using that first case, and although it never went underwater, it got splashed on alot. Phone stayed dry, it fit great in the bathing suit pocket, and even took some great pics through the case. Would definitely recommend.

Used on a canoe trip. The canoe flipped and it went underwater for around a minute or so, and air dried after, did a great job. Would recommend this one!
i am using the first case, blue, as well. Works fine, keeps my phone dry in a 10ft deep pool. Takes picture fine too. Thanks for the review OP.
I actually prefer these right here. They come in different sizes I prefer the 6-1/2 x 3-1/4I can't confirm they work in 100 ft of water because I have no reason to be that deep ever in my life, but for the average rainy day, screwing around by the pool or working out these work great. The best part is the patented purple zip technology that lets you visibly confirm the case is sealed. Also pics turn out great. Good luck in your decision
