The phone vibrates a little bit when someone answers the other end. Does anyone know how to get shot of this as it's doing my head in!!!!! Been thru settings and can't see anything in there reference it. HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPP.
I thought this was one of the nicest features I've seen on a phone.

Why would you wanna lose this option?
During connecting a call the radiation of the phone is the highest.
At the time the connection is made it's way lower (just listen to you're stereo when you're making and having a call sounds worse during the first 10 sec, before you answer)
Radiation does damage, so it's better to hold te phone to your ear when the connection is made. This way you know when you're connected.
Very cool option, wouldn't want to lose it

The vibration is there so you don't need to hold the phone to your ear when it's most ''harmfull''
As i said, when you dail a number, making the connection sends out the most radiation. When you have a connection (after the vibrating) radiation is way lower (so more safe)

yes understand, but I had several phones who had this function, never found a way to turn it of (maybe some of the cookers know how to remove it)

Yeh, I suppose so. To be honest now that you have pointed out the relevance of such a function it kinda makes perfect sense, certainly for health and safety reasons. To be fair the vibrate aint that bad if I don't put the handset to my ear until the phone has vibrated in my hand, basically using it for what it's there for. I took my ameo apart the other day to fix a speaker and noticed that it had i slot for a vibrating alert. so I took apart my old dead o2 xda ii and the motor fitted in perfectly, trouble is the ameo has no software to switch it on so its useless on the whole. does anyone know of a way to add this missing software? as it is built into the rom it would be hard to add seeing how its never had one anyway.

This was brought up in a previous thread. But i've seen in the past something that enabled you to change profile, with the option to turn vibrate on adn off. I can't remember where I seen it though. Do a search maybe you'll come up luckier than me.

But this doesn't mean it can really activate it...
its strange, its all setup for the motor inside, its as if they changed there mind last moment. it would be handy in my job to have it working, I guess the only real way is to take the software out of another rom with one and install it into the athena rom. i will keep searching.

wisebar is just the wallpaper for the real software behind I think, I dont think it is much trouble to add the button but its the rest. just because the slot and track is there, maybe some of the components are missing also. But im guessing here
Maybe vibrating alarm and the built-in microdrive won't like each other ?

I think that that is the most likely answer. I'm sure it would be OK at first but could damage things in the end,
I also remember reading about this somewhere. Seems like someone said vibrate was going to be incorporated, but was not because of the microdrive. I saw a vibrating motor that was only 3mm x 11mm. Maybe less vibrate would have less effect on the drive. Software though, hmmmmmmmm.......

The Better solution and answer provided some time ago was to make a recording of another device vibrating (i.e.: sitting on a desk or table) then using that audio file as the ringtone. It won't shake the innards of your Athena and if anyone in a meeting or where ever hears it, they wouldn't likely know the difference.

I just don't understand people who say the vibrating sound thing is a solution. If the pda is in your pocket, how does the vibrate sound let you know you have a call. You do not even hear it. It is the actual vibration that would let you know you have a call. i would give up the microdrive in a second for a real vibrate mode!
And besides hearing a vibrating phone in a meeting is just as bad as hearing it ring. So the idea would be to notify you that you have a call and others would not hear it.

If you are putting Athena in your pocket, you must be a BIG person or wear oversized clothes. IMHO Athean is not a pocket device (too big), but having the sound of a vibrating phone with the volume towards low is only audible very near the device. I would agree with your comment on being annoying if it were on loud. Perhaps those who absolutely want to vibrate should look towards the X7510 which has the 16GB flash instead of uDrive, and work on the hack to make it available as a ring setting.
Try to use standard HTC Home - it has possibility to choose vibra tone ( but I'm not shure if it send signal to vibra)

As it happens, I'm 6 foot 3 and weigh around 23 stone (325 lbs) so i meet both of those criteria. I have no problem with fitting this thing in my pocket.
Still, i don't do it cos i don't want to forget it's in there and crack the screen if i sit on it! Personally, vibration is not a problem for me, cos if I'm in a meeting or somewhere I can't answer the phone, i put it on silent and deal with everything afterwards.
Just because I CAN be contacted at any time on my mobile, doesn't necessarily mean that I WANT to be contacted.....

I almost posted this yesterday and didn't, but I feel the need to back up eagle 1. A recording of a vibrating phone is not a solution. I need vibrate here: in the car with the radio turned up, in a meeting, in a movie or performance theater. A quiet buzzing recording will be missed every time. There are times when I must be available, like when the kids are home with a babysitter.
The fact that HTC designed vibrate into our phones and then left it out is a real shame. I too would have given up the MD to get vibrate.
The Athena fit's quite nicely in my suite jacket pocket, or, indeed, the inside pocket of my leather jacket - either way, when I'm out I often can't hear the ring but would be able to feel a vibrate.

Actually the Athena fits pretty good in a coat pocket and even better if you ditch the keyboard and cover. When I am out I do this along with carrying the Style-i.
raskell - that's why I bought the Jabra BT8010 which has vibrate, although the motor is so small I sometimes miss it when its in the pocket of my jeans. Not as good as an industrial-strength vibrate would have been built-in to the Athena.
Hey, the more vibrating accessories you can get, the better your chance of not missing a call!
I would suggest making a Mortscript with a vibrate command. I'm not sure what component Mortscript relies on to vibrate but it seems it's incorporated into itself.
Now, my question is did you see any place to slip in an earpiece?
Hello! New guy here and in searching the web for some answers, I found this site and it looks like a good place to ask some questions
I'm wondering if anybody else finds the speakerphone to be unacceptable? Forget about using it an a car... especially one with an aftermarket exhaust And, even in a fairly quiet room you still have to have it fairly close to you to be able to hear it even with the volume all the way up. At first I thought it was a defective unit and so did the people at the Alltel store (new phone and they are not familiar with it) so they swapped it out for a new one. Got the SAME results and even the guy at Alltel was very disappointed with the quality of the speakerphone. I ended up calling Alltel and asking one of their people about it and they went and got a Touch Pro, tried it, and was like "Wow, that does suck!". LOL!
So, I'm not seeing very much here about how the speakerphone is basically unusable so am wondering if it possible that I got two bad phones in a row and the Altell tech guys have a bad one too?
While this isn't a dealbreaker for me, I do like to use it every so often and can't believe such an expensive phone has such a poor speakerphone!
If this is "just the way it is" is there anyway you smart guys on here which do the hacking can boost up the volume a little???

I can pick up a 25.00 phone and the speakers are way better
I too have the one from Alltel. The speakerphone is weak; however, I don't use it much. When speakerphone is turned off, it is OK.
What I do use is a Motorola H500 and that is very weak as well. Not sure why.
Yeah, this is very disappointing. I thought I could "live" with a poor speakerphone because like cagarn, I don't use it often. It is more the point of it though... it is an expensive phone and if I WANT to use the speakerphone I WANT it to work!
Now, I'm having another problem... the GPS doesn't work worth a crap. I downloaded Google Maps and it was always stuck looking for satellites. Would always show 0 (zero). Thought maybe there was a problem with Alltel "messing" with something so programs like this wouldn't work and you'd be forced to spend $9.99 a month on Alltel's GPS service so, for troubleshooting purposes, I activated Alltel's service and it said "weak signal". Went out to the middle of a large yard and after trying a few times got the Alltel service to lock on and display my location. I then closed out that program and opened Google Maps and DID get it to work too. Since then though, I've not been able to get it to work even in the middle of a large parking lot and not even being in my car??? I went to the local Alltel to swap out the phone again because it seems like the GPS is defective but there were out of the phone. The lady had a personal use HTC Diamond so we tried Google Maps on her phone in the middle of the parking lot and it wouldn't find any satellites either??? What's going on with this? Going to look through the forums here and see if this too is a problem with this phone. Sigh. If this is just the way the GPS is, what the heck is the point of a GPS receiver that is so weak it can't be used in a car and only sometimes in the middle of a large field??? It is getting to the point were, even though I really like the phone and the killer resolution of the screen, I'm about ready to just go back to my trusty Treo 700wx!

I normally have EV but sometimes 1X. But, the problem isn't with the data part... the problem is it won't acquire any satellites.
I did notice something weird though... I ran a GPS Test program and it showed the GPS working then opened Googlemaps and it worked then too??? Since then I've been experimenting and the phone will sometimes get 12 satellites and other times I can't get it to connect to any and this is even standing still outside in good weather! I'm also having an issue with the signal (regular phone signal) varying greatly on the phone from no bars to maybe three bars while the phone is staying the same place. It was doing this at the Alltel store and all the other phones in there had a steady strong signal. They are going to replace the phone because of the GPS and weird signal issues. Hopefully this one will work
Oh, and there is a user on another board named badboy8813 who has developed a cab file which increases the volume of the phone. I have tried a "half" boost fix and now going to try the full boost fix and see if that makes it any better. The half one worked pretty good but I'd rather have it real loud and turn it down if needed

I have tried both versions and both do what they say. The full boost version is NICE and LOUD Speakerphone still sucks though. It just isn't a good speakerphone speaker and I'm afraid nothing short of replacing the speaker will "really" fix this problem. The above definitely helps but it is very unfortunate such a nice and expensive phone uses such a cheap and crappy speakerphone speaker. My cheap old and free Motorola T262 speakerphone blows this thing out of the water
Yup i just spent 600+ on this phone with alltel because I'm still in contract, and the main issue i'm having is the crappy speaker phone as well.
oh and yea i had to use the volume boost which is pretty cool to bring the volume up as well but it only affected the regular volume, not the speakerphone, not that i noticed.

Wow is right. Sad. HTC isn't too "up" on their different version phones from the different providers. I read parts of the HTC Touch Pro pdf on their website before I got mine from Alltel so was familiar with their "standard" phone. When I was having speakerphone problems I called HTC tech support. The guy insisted the speaker was on the BACK of the phone. I relied "yes, it is on the back of the phone in the pics listed on your website but on MY ALLTEL phone there are two slits in the top the sound comes out of. He tried to agrue with me a little until I said "Listen, I have no fancy pattern on the back of my phone and no little grille looking thing. If you take the cover off there is nothing for speaker sound to go through and only clear SOLID plastic for the camera and light and if I cover up the slits on the top with my finger the speakerphone volume basically goes away and gets very muffled... the sound comes out of the top of my phone for sure." He replied back with something like "Well, it is supposed to come out the back." To that I replied, "Thank you for your assistance. Good bye."
Yep, I got about as much help from them as you did. They HAVE to know this speakerphone is basically useless. Why are they trying to play it off like you're an idiot? The worst part is that I asked if there was a "fix" for this and they replied no fixes and none being planned. Lovely. Maybe I'll have to buy an old phone on eBay for about $2 and solder in one of the GOOD speakers in my "state of the art" phone. LOL!

I don't know for sure but from what I've been reading it seems like the speaker is jus not that great.
I just downloaded and started playing with a program called Diamond Tweak which allows you to use the equalizer for everything (not just when headphones are plugged in)... plus it does a ton of other stuff. I'm thinking if I can get the EQ tweaked in for standard TALKING then that might fix a lot of the problems. Might want to check it out...

there is a reason it vibrates!! scientists say that while the phone is establishing a connection with another phone radiation leveles are at there highist, HTC put this feature into there phones so you dont have to hold the phone to your head while the phone is ringing, you can keep the phone in your hand and put it to your head after it vibrates to say the other person has picked up ..... its for your safety why would you want to remove it?

sounds like BS to me. when you make a call you don't establish a radio connection with the network, not another phone. and as soon as you hear the ringing sound in your speaker (so still before the vibration), the connection is established, the radio resources are set and the radiation levels should be set to the possible minimum...

I think there's something in this that is true, but I doubt this is why the feature is there. I believe MythBusters used a SWAR meter to monitor the radiation output of a phone at one point (to find out if a phone call could cause a petrol station to explode), and they found that the peak signal strength on the SWAR meter was attained when the connection was initially being made (before the ringing starts).
But yes, you're absolutely right that the vibration is long after the high intensity signal (it's happening when nothing is heard, or maybe seen on the screen(can't remember the order the hero does stuff in))
And, to top it off, it's only for a tiny length of time, so you'd have to sit and call and hang up constantly to get exposed to this kind of signal.
And, off topic, no- the petrol station didn't explode.

I noticed that too.
Yet voice recordings are very clear.
It must have something to do with the way sprint handles voice data.
Also, incoming calls sound super clear.
Maybe we can fix that in software?
Calls sounds like crap to me but everyone I speak to says it sounds good.

Either our ears/speech are very different, or the phone is really good but cell towers are very different.
I am getting the same thing. My wife just hung up on me because she could not understand me on the phone. She said I sound like I am mumbling. I thought it was the phone mic, so I plugged in a headset, nope still sounded like crap. Now I'm debating taking the phone back.

1) When you say that you plugged in a headset, does that also mean that your mic of the headset was being used, not the phone mics?
2) Did you do the EVRC-B fix described in the developers' forum?

Check the FAQ page and read about the Call Quality and EVRC and EVRC-B Codecs respectively... I don't have your issue, but maybe it will help.

1. Yes I was using the headset mic. I got this phone on launch and every caller says they cannot hear me.
2. Yes I did the EVRC-B fix. It seemed to help a little, but then I did a phone reset due to Sense crashing all the time (and I mean constantly) and I was using my EVO 4g class 2 sdcard. So I updated to a class 10 card, factory reset the phone, no Sense crashes, the EVRC-B fix still in place but my call quality is crap. It sounds like my words drop out.
My wife and I both have the 3D phone, and we are always saying...what?..what? we never had this issue. I would agree that the call quality is horrible on this phone. I emailed HTC on this matter and Im just waiting for a response. Will post it here when I get it.

I swap photos periodically, and it is DEFINITELY the 3D in particular, not the network. My Evo 4G sounds crystal clear always. Never had anyone asking me to repeat myself. Same with the other phones I use on Sprint.
I tried the below and it did not seem to help at all.
I first noticed this issue when setting up voice mail and my outgoing message sounded garbled. I believe it is over-agressive noise reduction.
Here is the fix which did not work for me:
dial "##data# select "edit mode" input your MSL (you'll have to get it from sprint customer service or follow the guide here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click Here To Register... ] I got mine from customer service very easily just by asking, but sometimes they are hesitant to give it out.) select "Advanced Options" enable "EVRC-B" change "Home Orig" and "Roam Orig" to "EVRC-B" tap menu and save changes
EVRC-B is the more advanced cellular voice encoding format, and should improve your call quality. FYI, if you for whatever reason you don't like the change or are uncomfortable with it you can always change it back (i.e. we didn't make any permanent changes)
I emailed HTC about this issue and this is their response...and yes I told them I have a HTC 3D and they replied as if I had a the older 4G
"I understand the importance of having a high quality sound from your HTC EVO 4G. I will be more than happy to assist you with this. I first recommend performing a soft reset on the device. This is done by powering the phone off and removing the battery for 30 seconds. Then, reinstall the battery and test the phone.
Next, I recommend uninstalling any third party applications from the device. This is done by going to: Home> Menu> Settings> Applications> Manage Applications. Tap each program and then tap Uninstall. When finished, press Home and test the phone.
Finally, I recommend performing a factory reset on the device. Note that this will erase all of your personal data from the phone and reset it to the factory settings of the current ROM. Please ensure that your personal data has been backed up prior to resetting the device. To reset it, go to : Home> Menu> Settings> SD & Phone Storage> Factory data reset. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the reset and evaluate the results. These steps should allow your device to function normally. I do apologize for any inconvenience"
I posted in another section of the forums in regards to this issue . At first I though it was my Otter Box Defender case causing the problems . But after looking at the phone in the case and the mic hole leading through the case to the mic I saw they had cut this little sliver of a slot for the mic to hear through . I took it apon myself to modify the battery back . I took a triangle shaped file and filed the notch till it was the exact size of the opening on the bottom mic . Now everyone hears me clearly unless of course there is alot of background noise . If you are nervous about filing your battery back down . Try making a few calls with the battery back off and see if callers hear an increase in call clarity or not . With the back off and they say much clearer then I would point in the direction of the battery back . Thats how I resolved my issue . The hole I made looks stock so I doubt anyone would ever question me about it anyways due to the fact it looks stock . Just another possible avenue , but if callers say you still sound muffled even with the battery back off then I would say somethign is wrong with the unit .

Thanks for the tip! I found that holding the mic closer to your mouth also cures the problem but feels unnatural with top of phone away from the ear.I just filed my notch, will report results when I test it.
Use 13k, Its clearest of all, i had the same problem. EVRC is crap

Thanks for the tip, I tried that and called my wife on her evo 3d and she said she did not notice any improvement

Damn and i thought holding the phone the wrong way was only an iPhone feature Lmao
Anyways I have no idea since no one has tell me anything but I do no make the many phone calls so probably that's why
If you don't have an Evo3d well you don't have an Evo3d

As title says. I hear a strange high pitch noise coming from the back of the phone. I have a bell c6806 with android 4.2. it's always making the noise and I hear it when I'm on a call. Very annoing. Is this normal? Can anybody check theirs by placing an ear on the back of the phone near the camera. any info on this be really helpful. Thanks. Also there's another less noticeable sound that sounds like the noise that comes from a mechanical hard drive :s
Update. I turn my phone off and on and the noise go away. But as soon as I make a call the high pitch squeal sound comes back. I thought it was first coming from the ear piece first when I heard it but it's definitely from the top back off the phone and it doesn't go away the sound stays there until I turn the phone off
Haha! What the... I have never noticed it, but you're right. It does make some sort of noise! I know what it is though; it's the radio (antenna). Not sure why it makes a noise and i'm not sure if other devices have this noise, but it's the antenna. It'll go away as soon as you kick it into Airplane Mode. I have to really listen for it when i hold the back side to my ear, so i can't say it bothers me, but it's definitely a little strange
EDIT: Some more information around these "chirps". I'm going to listen to some other phones i have laying around now and report back soon.
EDIT 2: I checked an LG phone (can't remember the model), but it also makes some noises. My old Desire HD doesn't, but it doesn't have a SIM in it, so that's probably why. I'll check my Galaxy Note later today. It's totally logic though. Our devices are constantly connected to cell towers, so the antennas are always pinging the towers. It doesn't make the same noise if i'm in airplane mode with WiFi on. It's much lower, and i guess it's because of the frequency.

EDIT 4: I contacted Sony and they are not aware of this, so they can't really say if it's normal or not. But as long as the device is fully functional and there aren't any issues, we shouldn't really be worried. But if you are worried, you can send it in and they'll take a look at it (not sure if it's worth it to be honest).

Thanks for checking yours. Do you hear the high pitch squeal tho? I've actually tried to to change network modes 2g 3g lte and also airplane mode but it doesmake a difference for me. The mechanical noise is pretty much always there but I don't hear it unless my ears are press to the phone but the noise that bothers me is the squealig because I can hear it when in a phone call do you hear both them noises on yours or just the mechanical sounding noise? I'm going to try and record it tomorrow after work.

I made a new thread about this in the general section since i wanted more people to see it. We aren't the only ones with this "noise", and it's also on other devices too, so i guess it's pretty normal. I still don't know why the antenna makes noises though.
