[Q] confused... where do i start with out of the box android - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys, i got my new htc hero yesterday...
i want to root, flash, etc...
can anyone help me where to start???
i am running windows 7 x64 and already got the x64 drivers someone made. the device is installed when connecten.
i really am confused on how to begin with whatever...
what do i do first? recovery image, then root, unlock spl then custom rom/apps/etc?
but how do i flash the recovery rom because when i enter the first command to enter bootloader it says:
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
error: closed
please can someone sum up the posts i need to do the things i want? there are so many
please help

and you figured the development thread is the best place for this?
and you think NOT telling us what exactly the "first command to enter bootloader" is was a good idea?
and you figured NOT telling us the software versions of you hero would speed up the process of helping you?
maybe you should go over this again...

Confused....sorry

You should probably do a little more research and deductive reasoning before making a post like this.
First and foremost: Are you on a CDMA or GSM hero?

3 UK root?

Hey Xda-developers. Just quickly, I found this Forum from a few links on other websites (gizmodo, engadget) and some youtube videos of your awesome custom ROMs.
I for my HTC Hero in March, and I should be upgrading around christmas 2011. That's a while, and Android grows fast..much much faster than HTC update my device, so I'm thinking a custom ROM is what I really want.
I've done my research, but honestly I'm pretty much a noob here. I know I need to root the phone, but I've been unable to find any specific instructions for 3 UK, and as far as I can tell all the different carriers use different instructions (a different ROM to downgrade to?), so I don't want to use the wrong ones.

Phone Spec
Okay, this is a standard HTC Hero on a 24 month contract carried by 3 UK.
There has been no rooting, no major changes. I have done no more than officially supported. A complete from scratch root would be required.
Currently running 1.5.
UK, 3 Mobile, GSM.
No hardware replacements and no known issues with the phone.

I think that's about all, is somebody here able to point me to the right place for a 3 mobile root?
Thanks in Advance,
Callum.
I'm also on 3uk and i rooted my phone using the following guide:
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-hero/54802-how-root-install-custom-rom-backup-more.html
Hope this helps.
Thankyou very much for your help! I'll be giving that guide a go later.
No probably m8, SenseHERO is a good custom ROM.
Any trouble just post up and ill try and help you out.
Hmm, if I could ask you to take a look at a post, that'd be really helpful. No worries if you don't have a clue though.

Sorry that link is so bad, but they won't let me post a proper one.
That thread was alternative 2 for the 3uk guide you gave me (goldcard section). I'm not sure whether you'll be able to help me, but if you could take a look that'd be massively helpful.
Cheers,
Callum.
I posted a reply to more or less the same problem earlier.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6701261&postcount=268
Let me know how you get on.
Thankyou very much for your reply, but I have already done all of this. I've successfully performed a goldcard on my SD and I'm really close to getting a working custom ROM, but it's dying somewhere there. I have already installed the x64 drivers though.
HTC Sync works perfectly, picking up the phone and synchronizing on demand.
Thanks,
Callum.
What guide are you using, i used this was one to create a goldcard and downgrade:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5855697&postcount=1
The only problem i had was syncing after installing the latest version. I fixed it by downloading a driver manager and updated the drivers for it.
I take it it lets you mount the SD card on your computer?
One thing that might be worth a try is to download the ROM again, it might be corrupt, a shot in the dark but worth a go.
That's the guide I ended up at, after following a link within the guide you provided above.
It does indeed allow me to mount the SD card, everything syncs perfectly. I'll give re-downloading the ROM a go, though. There was two available, so I'll try the other download.
Hmm, I've tried everything I can think of, and nothing is working on this Windows 7 machine. My brother's XP machine is broken, and my dad's away with the XP notebook.
Is there any way that anybody knows of to run XP as a virtual machine temporarily?
Here's a link for a virtual box:
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox
I dont know how to run it though.
Someone had a similar problem on win7 yesterday and sorted it by getting a new gold card. Might be worth a try?
Aha, I re-downloaded goldcard, and switched the driver to My HTC once with it normally plugged in, then with bootloader open. And it downgraded!
I've got the Scenehero on the SD card now, I'm just unable to launch the custom recovery screen. It will start normally by hitting power, but while the home button is also held it just loops the first hero screen. Is there any way past that, because I need to perform a wipe and flash scenehero.
Thanks so much for your help so far, you've been amazing!
If your all set up properley you should be able to connect your phone via usb to the PC,
then open a command window and type>"adb shell devices"
your phone should show in the window something like HTLK12345
now type> "adb shell reboot recovery"
this should boot your phone into recovery mode.
Hope this helps.
Thankyou very much for your help, I solved the problem by re-installing my recovery. Not sure what went wrong but it worked after that. All looks good now!
good stuff m8, glad your sorted.
what rom are you running?
I'm currently using the latest version of Sensehero. Really pleased with it so far.
I'm on branch 3, waiting for branch 5, should be here soon hopefully.
If you have'nt already m8 check out the site:

Dual Booting - Ubuntu/Debian and Android

Hey All
I have a requirement for setting up a dual boot on the HTC Hero using the SD Card for the 2nd OS.
I've looked around and have come across the Dual Booting for the Windows Mobile and Android on the HTC HD2 and was hoping somebody might be able to point me in the right direction archiving this on an Hero.
I'm not looking to run both OS at the same time, ie not running Ubuntu/Debian via a loop device.
So if anyone knows of any good guides for editing the Boot.img, i thinking that where the magic gonna happen, i might be wrong, please i would very much like to hear from you.
Many Thanks
c0mput3
ubuntu in its present form simply will not run. cmd based linux is a possibility for many mobile devices, as has been prooved by cmd linux on iphone os.
I wouldnt know about how to go about this though.
Speak to kendon over on Villainrom forums.I think hes probably the one to talk to as im sure he said ubuntu is possible
Many thanks Bonesy, checking that now. =)
Status?
... and what was the end result?
There is a thread on the villianrom forum for running ubuntu/debian alongside android though I'm still waiting for a new SD card before I try it. I would link but its still down, any ETAs for it being back up yet, I understand it might take a while?

[Q] Help rooting HOX+

Hey guys, I've been trying to get an initial root on my HOX+, it's my first time rooting anything and I've come across a bump in the road. I've been following this rooting guide from the HOX+ forum, but so far no one's responded to my request for help, so I decided I'd broaden my quest for answers here.
This is the initial post I made:
Help! I've followed the steps to the T, but I'm struggling with installing the recovery. I've unlocked my bootloader, downloaded the TWRPrecovery.img, put it in the right folder. As soon as I boot into the bootloader, my phone seems to disconnect from the computer. I still have fastboot usb selected, but my device no longer shows up under adb devices. When I try to >fastboot flash recovery TWRPrecovery.img, I get an error "error: cannot load 'TWRPrecovery.img' : Unknown error"
I've got the international HOX+ and a computer running Win7. Any assistance in the matter would be super appreciated.

[Q] Note 2 won't power on after trying install cm 10.2

I'll start out that I'm new to android, been an avid blackberry user that just purchased my note 2. I followed the casual root application, and unlocked and rooted my device. I went to install cm 10.2 mod on my device after wiping the device in development mode and it failed. Now my device will not respond to either download mode or development mode. I'm kind of stuck and not sure how to approach the correct solution to get my device back up and running.
Any help would be very appreciated, Thanks in advanced!
Sorry I should of mentioned this in the above post, I did make sure that the cm mod I downloaded was for my specific device. Is it possible that maybe the root/unlock method failed and thats where I went wrong when installing the cm mod? I also get no response when the device is plugged into my pc. So its not being read by odin currrently
Since it appears I have hard bricked my device, not quite sure what steps I can do to recover. I get no power to the device in any situation, I've read online about riff jtag (sorry spelling), if anyone could point me in a direction it would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Kobo arc APX drivers

Hi guys,
Wondering if anyone here has the know how to help.
Im fiddling with some new Kobo arcs, the 7HD and the 10HD and im having some bother with installing a custom recovery img.
For simplicity sake im going to refer to them as the same device as they are both behaving the same way
The device is rooted, and I am able to flash a custom recovery made by Jenkins builder but its not functional, when you boot to the recovery OS it just goes black and the back light flashes on an off (screen remains black it just lightens up)
At this point I can reboot as normal and adb to it and flash the original recovery img and all is well.
As far as I can tell its bootloader is unlocked but there might be a second bootloader im not able to interact with yet, possible called uboot?
From adb I am able to reboot the device in to bootloader and fastboot and both function as id expect, but the problem im having is booting directly to fastboot in case I bugger something up which would allow me to fix it.
I can boot the device in to a "mode" that tries to install an APX device, ive tried using various adb, fastboot, and composite drivers and nothing seems to work, ive downloaded some old NVidia APX tegra 2 drivers ive found but these fail to work with the NVFlash utility that comes with it, it says unknown device found, which would make sense given the utility is at least 3 years old
So firstly,
Does anyone know what might course the customer recovery rom to fail and yet flash like it is doing, if so any suggestions where to start to look for a solution?
Secondly,
Does anyone know much about this APX mode and how to actually put it to good use the driver appears to work and communicate but im needing something desktop wise to talk to it...?
hope you guys can help
edit
ive answered some of question 2 myself, it appears its a pain in the arse by all accounts and not as user friendly as I was hoping, I can send commands to it but it appears that commands may need to be "signed" of sorts as I don't get any response other than acknowledgment of the command sent, ill monitor the USB traffic and see if that sheds some light, it also appears that NVflash (not to be confused with its cousin in the GPU arena) is also hopelessly out of date and once again Linux is needed to get something more updated, if there is ANY help at all id appreciate some input

I know this is old, but how did you flash the original recovery? I think I need to do this so that I can install the update ZIP for the Kobo 10. CWM is failing to install the file.
