By "the message opens up" do you mean that it shows you the notification when a message arrives? If so then you can go in the stock Messages application and under Settings disable Notifications

sorry i ment the "messages" application opens every time i recieve a text

Are you talking about Handcent's popup? It's easily turned off in the options.

the stock "messages" application! so if you dont have handcent, the stock app that you receive/send texts with!
and i use handcent, so i leave handcent open, but every time i recive/send a text, then i go to a task manager, the stock app "messages" is open...
how do i stop this? lol
thanks againn

Stock messaging app wont disable

I use handcent but the stock messaging app receives ALL incoming and outgoing messages. WTF! Ive unchecked everything in settings of the stock app but its still processing all of my messages. Anyone else having this issue. Any solutions on disabling it. thx
what do you mean processing all your messages?
it always does... any messaging app on your phone WILL "process" them but all you can really do is disable the notifications....

I know that...
...but typically when I install a message app and disable the stock app notifications and the proceed to use a txt feature I will be asked which app I want to default to this action....I haven't gotten that and my stock app is still in charge.
The stock app sucks, handcent ftw.
Even when I send a message in hadncent the stock messaging app has the sent message as well. On evo4g when I disabled stock app it just laid dormant. This thing is like a virus or some kind of spyware

This.
Hit menu applications manage applications then find the stock app and hit clear defaults. Next time you choose an action that requires text it'll ask you again which app to set as default.
Clearing data doesnt work. It just restarts the app. never gives an option to choose default
I have noticed this also. On the OG EVO the stock message app would stay unused while in 3VO it is always getting messages and also showing unread bubble on the app shortcut.
I am actually using stock now since the conversations are threaded like handcent. Handcent can't do unread bubbles on the shortcuts on home screen or on lock screen.
And clearing defaults is greyed out. It says no "defaults set"

You're clearing defaults on the stock app though? If it's greyed out then you haven't set the default app and you probably just never changed out the messaging icon on your lock screen or main screen.
I wouldn't use the disable stock messaging app setting in Handcent. It starts the whole 9016 texts when you get voicemails. I tried it and since it disables the stock app completely the 9016 texts don't get stopped before Handcent gets them so you don't get the VVM.
I've also noticed the count bubble on the icon in the app grid and I don't like it, but I don't know a way around it yet.

True, but fixable. Download spc from the market. It blocks the 9016 texts, and you still get voicemail! Win.
One thing I noticed different in this stock messaging app vs the OG evo is that we dont seem to have an option to uncheck the "auto retrieve" messages. This setting exists in Handcent, and existed in 4g. I always used to uncheck it in stock, and then check it in Handcent. So, looks like we are screwed until they update the app.

[Q] Help!! Messaging problem

I have a rooted SGS2 running Siyah 2.3 and Touch X-Power, with LauncherPro. I have the stock messaging app. When I receive texts from certain people in my contacts list, I get a notification but when I open the text to read it, I'm taken straight to the message create screen and can't read the text. No matter which way I try to enter the messaging app, I can't open the text or any previous ones that I've received from them.
This also happens if I have Handscent running, the message is accepted by the stock app but not Handscent... It's driving me mad.
Any ideas? Can I remove the stock app so that it isn't there at all and use something else like Handscent as the default?
If the app doesn't force close then it sounds like its a problem with either what you are doing or something other than the app.
But yea, you can remove the app and just use handcent if you really want to. Get Root Explorer from the market if you haven't already (its like £2 or something). Then navigate to system > apps > you will see a whole bunch of apks. Find MMS.apk and delete it.
Hope that helps.
Did you mess around with the settings?

deleting an sms without opening it

I've been unwillingly receiving some advertisement sms which charge my account once the sms is opened.
Is there a way to delete an sms message without opening it?.
TIA

yes, maybe some kind of code you can send to your operator/advertisement-sender which can stop the automatic messages, i know that kind of msgs sucks just find a way in google, i know different users experience that alot
You can download "SMS Popup" from the market. However you will need to manually configure it into "Privacy Mode" (or something similar). Once done, you will get a popup everytime you get a message, along with 3 options to "Open Message", "Delete" (without opening) or "Go to inbox".
I had the SMS POpup on my stock ROM but don't need it now on MIUI...
Thanks.
Are you sure it doesn't open the sms?
The android market page for this app reads:
NOTE: SMS Popup does mark message as "read"
so as far as the mobile carrier is concerned, the sms has been received & read, so it will still charge for those spam sms.
@mike,
pls refer to my previous post - the app opens the SMS by default - but once you go to settings and enable privacy mode, it won't read the msg. A message is not marked as 'Read' as long as it's in privacy mode and you don't specifically open it. (Even the LEDs will continue blinking till u don't open the message)
It's a free app, so u can download and check that out.
Thanks for the info
If your with vodafone phone the operator and they will ban the number from your sim

SMS popup is nice, but does it show a history of all the sms, like the stock sms app on A2.1 does?
Also, to avoid duplicate notifications I've unchecked the "notifications" in the stock sms app, but it no longer shows incoming messages in the messages log. is this a bug, or is this related to sms popup "hijacking" the sms?
TIA

[Q] Smart Alert on custom notifications?

Hi guys,
Basically I want the benefits of Smart Alert (the vibrate when you pick the phone up if you have a missed call or message), but because the default messaging client is rubbish, I use Handcent SMS. Unless I want to deal with the double notification from Messaging and Handcent, I can't seem to find a way to get Smart Alert to work with Handcent SMS.
Does anyone have any ideas as to if this is possible?
Also, a quick secondary question that may need it's own thread. On my SGS1 I used Tasker to sync my podcasts in the morning by turning on WiFi and Autosync. I tried to set up the same script I had before, but Auto-Sync 'is unavailable on this device' which is really grinding my gears.
Thanks xda, keep up the great work.

Would be nice if this would work on Handcent. I set it as the default app for messaging. Maybe handcent has to fix this on their end.
It isn't a Handcent problem, it only works with the default messaging app.

Thanks for the quick response. Maybe some of the talented devs here can get that to work with handcent in the future.

I have been using this method, too. I wonder if Tasker could mimic the effects of Smart Alert?

Default messaging app not working properly, how to make third-party default?

So, the messaging app hasn't been working since I got my phone. Its a GSM razr maxx. When I create a new sms, and go to enter the contact name in, nothing happens-- I don't see any contacts come up. Even if I enter a phone number or name from my phone book, it says my entry was invalid.
Is there anyway to make another 3rd party app my default messaging app and have it appear on my lock screen?

I figured out why my contacts weren't showing up when entering contacts in a new message. Some stupid glitch in my "people" app. Under "contacts to display", nothing was checked under custom. Even though a custom view was NOT selected (all contacts was), this made it so nothing would come up in my messaging app (although my contacts displayed in chomp & my dialer just fine).
Although your advice will still come in handy because chomp is a lot better than the default app!
Haha .. Lolz ...
Thanks !!
Well that didn't work. When I send a message in my default app, it doesn't ask me to send in chomp sms.

I found a way to get it to work, using the same idea as what you suggested. After trying a third-party app to make chomp my default (didn't work), I thought of doing it this way.
1. Go to "people" app
2. Send message through people app
3. Select chomp to send message, and check the box to make it default.
A lot of people on other forums are saying to disable the default text messaging app. Maybe this works with other SMS apps, but not chomp. When I did this I could not receive texts. Probably because chomp works in conjunction with the default app.
Also, I did read that other SMS apps have an option within the app to make it default. Chomp should add this to make it easier. I did try a 3rd party app that controlled what apps are default, but it didn't work.
Well, now I am having this issue AGAIN. I tried out a few different sms apps to see what I liked best and upon reinstalling chomp I can not get it back on my lock screen no matter what I do... Making it the default app no longer works. Ugh so frustrating. I
