Well, I'll admit this is probably a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.
The Eris has a 5 Megapixel camera- but it can only record video in CIF at the highest.
Once it's rooted, maybe even before then, would it be possible to enable recording in VGA? I'm by no means technologically ignorant, but I'm not the most educated on cameras. So, if it's possible, let me know, and if not, please do explain WHY it's not, so that I can learn and not ask this question anywhere else.

the reason its recording in CIF is as follows:
1) CIF is smaller/quicker and has better compatability when sent via MMS
2) Because CIF is smaller/quicker you get a higher framerate then if you increased resolution best example of this is the iPhone 3G programs setup to record... Stuttered alot and had very few FPS
3) Higher Res Video Recording requires a faster processor.

I just figured that because some other HTC phones before this (windows mobile, mainly) Had programs that could force VGA recording, I figured that this one would be powerful enough for it.
Ah well.
Now I just gotta figure out how to get the best quality out of CIF... any tips on making the motion not as blurry, or is that something I'd have to wait until they root the device to play around with? (Or not possible entirely)
It really depends on the chipset's processing abilities and whether it can handle the recording at that high of a resolution.

So I am not sure what exactly happened to this discussion but I was wondering if there was any one trying to figure out how to get 1080p video recording possible on our phones? I believe our hardware is capable of shooting in 1080p but for some reason was left out last minute. Would this be able to happen via a custom kernel? I apologize if this was resolved a while ago but I just haven't seen any recent threads about this.
this phone can barely pull off 720p video capture very smooth..If 1080p recording is to come to our Evo3D's it will be something from HTC..

Why do you say that? HTC was not able to get the original EVO past 30fps, the developers figured it out before them. HTC was also not able to get full HDMI mirroring on the original EVO before the developers figured it out. For a long time the EVO 3D was listed as being able to capture in 1080p, then suddenly days before released it was changed. Our processors ARE capable of shooting in 1080p.
Since the camera is controlled by software, you would need a 3rd party app that was written to do 1080, and that app would have to integrate with other phone systems, such as video and processor... So..i guess we wait untill someone gets the motivation to write it...
I hope 1080p can be made possible on this phone. I feel the hardware should be able to handle it, especially the CPU. Though the quality of the camera sensor and optics seems to be a bit lacking at least at first glance. I bet with some improved software, it should be possible to squeeze out more from our rear cameras.
Htc did this for a reason...therefore im 99% sure it is not possible.
Hopefully the reason was simply that they didn't have time to finalize any loose ends...

Thats like very unlikely...but well it would be great.
So now the evo 3d has been succesfully rooted, could it be possible to get 1080p recording on the EVO 3D??

Based on the performance of 720p recording I don't think I'd even want to see how choppy 1080 would look. The SoC is indeed very capable of handling it but I think it is limited based on storage write limitations not to mention the sensor's lighting conditions. Even if we could write 24fps (def not 30fps) in all but perfect lighting we wouldn't even be getting 24fps from the sensor...likely under 10 most of the time based on how 720p recordings average out.
...but then again I could (hopefully) be very wrong.

i think you might speak the truth there is a reason HTC didnt include this, after all.
Yes we have all the hardware capable of doing so, I'm sure it will get implemented in many upcoming roms. 720p recording is just bad programming on HTC's fault. We will get it ironed out .

I tend to agree..unless it is a sensor limitation..obviously the soc is capable of it since the sensation does it very well..I believe most issues that ppl have with photos/videos is software related..I actually like the video quality that I achieve with my e3d..and sound recording is much improved over It's predecessor

I have a $99 point-n-shoot that does 720p video that mops the floor with what I can get from my E3D.
Considering it's a cellphone, yes it takes fantastic video. However if we are going to rationalize the video quality with the qualifier "for a cellphone" then wouldn't we do the same and just agree that 720p is enough "for a cellphone"?
I do a lot of video work at my job and one thing I have seen personally and from everyone that has to review and approve my work....most people won't notice a lower resolution but people will most certainly notice lower frame rate, especially below 24fps. Lower resolution with perfectly smooth video wins over a lot more people than a super sharp super high resolution video with less than ideal frame rate. I'd prefer someone gets a rock-solid 30fps fix in place before or instead of a 1080p recording resolution...
...but that's just me.

Oh I'm not.disagreeing with that..id much rather have a smooth 720 p video than a choppy 1080p. I dont think any phone does 1080p justice..I'm totally fine with 720 I was just commenting on the possibility of it being able to be done on our phones..imo 720p still needs Alot of work . Btw didn't u send u e3d back? Are u gonna get it back since root or are u hold out for the gs2
I agree id rather have smooth recording becore a higher choppy Resolution.

Yeah, I could only take 2 weeks of the EVEN WEAKER NS4G radio...I'm back...though SGS2 is still a possibility and the nPrime is for certain.
The 720P has really impressed me so far. I even tried it out at night a few times, including moving it with quick movements in my car, and I didn't see any blurring or chop. I did find out that every so often I might get some chop on playback, but it was due to a hanging app, and restarting the device solved that problem.
Wasn't 1080p advertised when not using 3d?

The Evo 4G+ Is practically the Evo3d and its got 1080p recording in its release specs..But so did our 3D before release.
I personally don't see the need for 1080p recording,the software sucks and doesn't even do 720p very good.I leave it on qHD resolution.

I am not sure if this would work but it works in a logical way.
I was thinking why the hell do other devices with similar specs/a little better do get 720p?Well I can't seem to find myself an answer.
But I got an answer to fix that up.
What if we got an application which works in a similar way to torch with strobe to emulate at least 720p if not 1080p?
Take photos at such speed the are becoming frame shots.A similar way works in the computer you can film per frames in some programs and you get much better fps and still have the same quality.
So an app for that'd be great, I'm not much of a dev hand but I'll begin learning android programming, other than that I'm waiting for someone to make it until then.

Well there was a app that had this concept of taking pics, it was a total failure.
Don't know how well it will work on our devices nowadays though.
Can't the adreno 200 decode 720p ?
GPU nowadays are very powerfull to do this kind of thing. If someone found a way to decode natively, it would be very cool.
I know this is a gimmick feature, but there seems to be something wrong with the slow motion recording on the One X / EVOLTE; "something wrong" being it limiting the resolution to 480 by whatever. I've verified with a few friends that their Rezound records 720p slow motion just fine. Looks way better than ours, of course.
I know devs went to work with the OG EVO's camera, but this seems to be a simple software limitation that could easily be fixed; I cannot imagine the hardware being limited when older generation phones could do it just fine.
I'm seeing modded camera apk's, for both video and camera edits, but I haven't seen much on slow motion. Not even general discussion. Is there really no way to fix the slow motion recording? Or is nobody interested? I use it for skateboarding and sports, so having HD slow-motion would be awesome. I'm inexperienced with both video editing and coding, however, so trying to figure out how to implement this myself has been fruitless.
I'm not knowledgeable in this area but is it possible to develop a camera app completely separate from stock that allows for DSLR like control and save codec change?
The reason I ask is that if the camera's sensor can do 4k resolution then it should see everything in 4:4:4 detail instead of the H.264's 4:2:0
As a film hobbyist I supplement my main gear with my phone camera at times. This phone's camera possibly opens soooo many more avenues for indie and hobbyists. Not so much a samsung gimmick if we can actually put it to good use.

There are a few guys that specialize in adjusting camera settings and options.
There is a really popular guy over at the lg g2 forums. I would recommend we wait til they come over or ask some of them to check out our camera.
