need help rooting my hero - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I followed all the instructions to root my hero but I'm stuck at this step from theunlockr.com site:
Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
I'm not able to backup recovery image... I tried different flashrec files but I always have the same error...I'm not able to backup
Can anyone help me find an alternative way to get root?
Oh and I got a hero130 from TELUS and its a gsm phone and the firmware version is 2.73.661.46

i'm actually trying the goldcard version so we'll see what happens

The goldcard process is not optional, it must be done.
The ROM that comes on the Telus Hero is not rootable, HTC had patched our exploit by the time Telus released their Hero. You must use the goldcard method to downgrade your phone's ROM, and only then can you use Flashrec.

yeahhhhhh i got root and modaco 3.1

G2 Touch Stock RUU?

I've been trying to root my G2 Touch and have used the goldcard method.
I can only find the latest tmobile RUU (2.73) which can't be rooted!
Is there anywhere the stock (1.73) tmobile RUU is?
Regards
Signed update zip is here>> http://www.4shared.com/file/133081624/c5e35fa0/update-hero-t-mobile-1761106-s.html if any good.
Is there a reason for you to use goldcard on your G2? On mine (got at end of last month), it was the original unlocked 1.73 version, and it had an unlocked bootloader, allowing me to use fastboot to boot a custom recovery image (AmonRA) and then do a nandroid backup before flashing an update.zip
Presuming you need to use goldcard, I would have thought that a generic HTC version would have done. So long as it is 1.73, I think it would work fine, since the purpose of the goldcard (IIRC) is to ignore the carrier id and let you install the stock HTC ROM onto the device. From there you could root and flash the recovery partition to allow installation of custom roms.
So in conclusion-
-You might not actually need to use a goldcard, but if you do,
-Give the generic HTC 1.73 ROM a shot
BTW, I haven't personally tried this, so hopefully someone who knows a bit more about this can confirm if this would work, but I reckon it should. If possible, take a nandroid backup first, but this might be a bit difficult if fastboot doesn't work for you.

worked perfectly for me
You're using a tmobile G2 Touch right? I'm sure I tried this and it brought up the [131] customer ID error lol.. I'll try again though Thanks
yep i am, long story short i had a problem with and i had to apply the official so i could send it back to tmob for repair and once i got it back, i started to follow the video done by lockr and i got the [131] customer ID error when trying to use stock (1.73) ruu, saw the forum post use that ruu worked perfectly
I still got [131] error...
Where did you find the stock (1.73) RUU? The only one I can find is the 2.73, which is my current one.
i didn't use the 1.73 ruu, i used the 2.73 and i used that ruu i'm sorry that i can't help you :-(
Arr okay no worries I'll just wait until the 2.1 rom is released and hope that has some holes in! Thanks for trying
How about one of the first 2 RRUs from this page?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
None of the WWE RUU's seem to work... Only the tmobile one :/
Sounds like the goldcard isn't working properly
It is what makes any old RRU work, as it disables the Carried ID check which means only T-Mobile RRUs work for you. Seems strange...
Personally, I'd try making the goldcard again.
Yea I made the Goldcard twice on the same SD, so maybe its the SD card thats the problem... I try using some others I have somewhere
Iirc, the default micro SD card (2gn) that came with the phone works correctly. I've had a think and I reckon the goldcard is definitely the problem, as a working goldcard will accept any try file, such as the one I referenced before.
Give that a shot and if you have trouble, just try other cards until it works, but I reckon the stock card is your best bet for now. The HTC 1.73 rru should work after that.
I never recieved the stock 2gb card as I bought off an eBay seller...
But lucikily I had one lying about and created the goldcard and loaded the WWE RUU sucessfully, Thanks for your advice!

Downgraded G2 Touch, need help! :)

So
My problem is i cant use RUU because it gaves me Device ID Fail error. i have downgraded my G2 Touch from 2.73.116.61 (special hungarian t-mobile rom ) to 2.73.405.5 with Goldcard & RUU. Then, i've put a rooted rom(2.73.405.38), and the newest radio rom (*.09.26) with Cyanogen's recovery image. I'd like to know how could i put back the 2.73.405.5 rom with RUU, or any other rom with RUU, to make it stock HTC Hero? My T-Mobile havent came out with any update for the phone, so i cant try out that RUU
My point is when the Android 2.1 will come out for HTC Hero, then i'd like to upgrade too. Thanks for help!
btw: i've been searching for solutions for lot of days, so dont say "use google" if u cant give me specific solution, thanks
Alrighty,
If it was me, I would use the goldcard to RUU back to the earliest ROM possible (1.73). Then install a custom recovery like AmonRA, and use an update.zip to give you the stock Hero rom. (once you downgrade the ROM to 1.73, you can use fastboot to load the recovery image, so you don't even have to flash the recovery. This is as close to stock as you'll get.)
For the update.zip file for the stock hero, see http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/291942/gsm-24-11-hero-roms-radios-in-update-zip-format/. The one you are after is the second one down under 'shipping ROMs'
An alternative way to do this is to use the goldcard to install the exe (RUU) for the version you want. It's up to you.
So in short, use the goldcard again to RUU to what you want.
Goldcard is in the phone all the time, im using the stock memory card. If i do the goldcard it will be goldcard forever, atleast others said that. I've tried formatting the card, no luck
people have said that gold card method wont work on stock memory card so you have to go buy like a 4gb or 8gb card then put gold card on there and it should work fine.
I have stock memory card, and successfully made the goldcard, and downgraded my g2 touch, as the topic's name states it. i checked my goldcard stock memorycard with HxD, with i previously made my goldcard, and realised the first 17 line is zero, as the stock values were i think. i checked if i put the goldcard values back there, its different, so, is it possible the RUU made the goldcard stock? When the new android 2.1 ruu come out for hero i'll make the memorycard goldcard again, and check if its workin.
IIRC, it should NOT all be zeroes for the first 17 lines. I would make the goldcard again (you could even do it now so you have it working and ready for use). It shouldn't take too long since you've done it before, and will possibly have the tools needed downloaded to your PC already.
HTH
solved
at last i've done the goldcard procedure again, and it stood the same, i put the newest rom, working like a charm

Dowgrade from 2.1 to 1.5 htc hero

Hi guy. I looked for an answare in the topic but i didn't find so don't kill me. I have a htc hero with a 2.1 rom but i want to go back with a 1.5 rom. I have root and the lastes recovery so if i do a full wipe dalvik cache etc... can i install a 1.5 rom? Sorry for my english and thanks in advance for help!!!!
If you do a full wipe you can then do whatever you want.
as long as the phone is rooted, which i think it is because 2.1 hasn't been released yet, you can install any rom you wish, so long as it is a HTC HERO GSM rom, NOT CDMA. Do a complete wipe of all the settings in recovery mode and then flash the update file. Simple as.
Better still, did you perform a nandroid backup as advised prior to flashing your 2.1 ROM? If so then just boot to the recovery image and select restore.
Other than that, follow the instructions for flashing any ROM, as long as you can find a 1.5 image.
It is GSM hero, thank you for the answare i'll change the rom. I'll do full wipe!!!!
No problem, any time.
so, but what about the radio? should it be downgraded to the previous 'cupcake' version?
You don't have to the existing one will work fine.
I have a 2.1 Custom ROM,too!
So I can install the official "RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.5_WWE_release_signed" too,to go back
to 1.5,or I can only flash as "update.zip"?

I don't know if you can from 2.1 to generic ruu but when i had a modaco custom rom i downgrade with generic ruu with the procedure posted by htc and it works so i think you can do a full wipe, install modaco and then you can flash htc generic ruu by htc sync and generic ruuXXXX.exe
Ok,with modaco custom rom,it works, maybe should also works
with other custom roms,too!
Thanks anyway!
just don't flash an official rom if you want to be rooted, if you do, you lose your root access.
If you flash the official RUU from HTC, you will end up losing root and also lose the custom recovery menu. You won't be able to flash any more custom roms unless you root your device again and flash the custom recovery menu.
I would suggest just taking one of Paul's pre-rooted ROMs (from hero.modaco.com) in the form of a .zip file. The rom is identical to the official RUU, only rooted. This will allow you to keep your custom recovery menu and you can then still install custom roms.
ALWAYS PERFORM A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ROMS
Ok, I have a an HTC Hero, complete with the official 2.1 version. I want to root this and use custom ROMs but I'm in a bind. I tried using a program Regaw post in his http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 thread but it errored out saying I disconnected my phone when I haven't. All of the root methods I have found are for software versions later than the one I have. I really don't care which version I go to as long as it's one I can actually use Custom ROMs with. I am a newb at this so detailed instructions would be appreciated!
I also just tried to use Universal Androot with no luck, it gets to "Installing toolkit" and fails with a "Failed ! No Fu Goo". I read through the comments for that thread and many others have had that problem to, but no answers have been provided.
that's because you were reading a guide from HTC Hero CDMA forum and not from HTC Hero GSM. If your phone is curved at bottom you have the GSM version. if it's flat you have CDMA.
For GSM version of HTC Hero on how to root and install a custom rom follow this guide
I think you have it backwards? According to CyanogenMOD I definitely have the CDMA and am also still in the same situation...

Rooting Fully Patched Hero

Hi All,
This may seem like an obvious question but how do I root my hero? I am using a generic HTC hero with the latest UK ROM(2.73.405.5).
I have tried:
* flashrec - No error messages but the Bootloader is unchanged on reboot.
* flashboot - FAILED (remote: not allow).
* Unable to downgrade via RRU installer.
How do I get root so I can install customer ROMS.
Thanks
Charlie

Follow every step exactly like how its written on that website. And your phone will be rooted. This will work, I guarantee. Just follow it EXACTLY!
i could ONLY downgrade using this RUU
RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver
The one on unlockR and other walkthroughs didnt work
Thanks everyone for the advice.
Its can be quite confusing following all the rooting guides only to find it doesn't work because I have stupidly been to eager to install the latest stock ROMS. Dam my liking of shiny new official things
I shall give the Gold card a try.

Unable to Flash Any firmware on Hero, HELP

Hello all,
I've been using my Hero for a long long time now, it came with a russian firmware but I used the gold card method to flash it with a WWE firmware the day I payed for the phone, any way, today I wanted to flash it with other firmwares but it fails to do so.
I tired official firmwares from HTC and it refuses, I tried some custome ROMS using the recovery mode and the Update.Zip and again it refuses!
Any idea ?!!?

Your solution is here.
It depends on the WWE firmware you flashed.
I flashed it with 2.73.405.38 and now no luck in even trying to flash it with official 2.73.405.66
You need firmware: 2.73.405.5
Read my guide in my sig or visit the website also linked, next time post in the correct place (reported)
Thread moved to Q&A.
Still unable, even with 2.73.405.5
I don't mean to sound patronising, but do you actually have root and a custom recovery?
The goldcard method simply lets you downgrade the firmware to the version with a bug that lest you run flashrec, it doesn't automatically give you root.
What does your recovery mode look like? A triangle with a phone, or loads of menu's?
OK I used the Goldcard again to downgrade to 2.73.405.5 and it worked.
when my phone goes into recovery mode, it gets a blue menu.

Is this following my guide? It will talk you through the entire thing.
FYI having a goldcard will allow you to flash any official firmware. Installing flashrec on 2.73.405.5 will allow you to install a recovery menu (i.e. AnonRA's recovery) from the recovery you can install a custom rom (see my guide or the website).
