Questions about rooting HTC Hero - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new to android phone, after reading lots of post about rooting, I've got a few questions to ask. I have 2.73.405.5 European ROM, as I know I'll have to downgrade to older version (1.76.405.1_R3) to get it rooted. I like HTC Sence UI pretty well. My major purposes to get it rooted is to get APP2SD, and some blue tooth and ad-hoc wifi features works.
- Is there any different between these 2 version?
- Can I update to later official version but still have root access?
- If not, which custom ROM keep all or at least the most from HTC's official ROM?
Thanks in advance!

First of all you don't have to downgrade, I have that same version ( I had to downgrade from a higher version) and root works fine with the flashrec method (see stickes in the forum).
Second, root doesn't give you APP2SD out of the box as I understand (not sure about it) you can however install custom mods that enable that feature and work with it, I recommend Modaco (the one I am using currently).
I don't think you can upgrade (as I had to downgrade), the rooting process uses a bug in the system that has been fixed and patch in later versions.
I have downgraded and I have not noticed any missing features or lack of support for something.

Stupid question?

Hi all
I'm a complete newbie to the Android, but in the four weeks I've had the HTC Hero, I've set up email, downloaded loads of apps etc, but I've started to notice some problems.
I was advised to upgrade from Android 1.5 to Android 1.6 ahead of the upcoming release of 2.1, but I want to backup all my apps, email settings, messages, etc. so I don't have to start again after the upgrade.
I've been reading through the forums for a few days, and can't find a simple guide. I've found a lot about "root" but nothing about what root is! (As I said, I'm a complete newbie)
Any chance someone could post an idiots guide?
Many thanks
You know...The problem doesn't even exist!! Are you happier than before huh? ...Why? What? Didn't you know? F***ing HTC won't release ANY 2.1 update for our Heroes until 26th of April! Oh sure, you could upgrade to 1.6 but....NO! You can't! Because HTC has decided that 1.6 upgrade will never be released! Oooorrr...You could read some guide about "rooting" your Hero and installing a custom rom This is the best and quickest way to get 2.1 features without waiting for official HTC upgrade. Even because when the new firmware will be released maybe there won't be the possibility of rooting again the phone! So you're forced to use stock rom! And if you don't like it...Well...go to hell! XD (By HTC, not by me obviously...). I can only suggest you some "short" readings and a particular 2.1 rom:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superuser (aka root user)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654030 (The most stable and fastest 2.1 rom at the moment)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124 (The most powerful and friendly modded recovery)
So read, read and read! Then, when you think you're ready, try to root your Hero, if you're not able to do it maybe you've got a perfect SPL...But this is another story...
Oh..and (google)search, (google)search, (google)search //A sort of casting....
+1 MARDURHACK.
A few more things here,...
Have a read of What Can I Do With Root - INFO
Then check out [Guide] Newbie Guide to Install a Custom Rom
....Then when you get to the bit about installing your custom ROM, use the link that MARDURHACK provided if you want to try out a 2.1 ROM. Or you can have a look at the other ROMs available in the development section here at XDA.
I had my Hero for about 3 weeks but wanted a 100% stable ROM, so have opted for the MODACO 3.2 ROM. It is Android 1.5, not 2.1. You can get that from HTC Hero section @ MoDaCo.com
.... I can confirm, its the dogs bollocks!

Forthcoming T-Mobile G2 / HTC Hero 2.1 update in Europe

Hello,
I rooted my phone this week. T-Mobile in my country never provided an update for my T-Mobile G2. So my phone still runs on build 1.76.110.6.
I'm consider to install a custom ROM, because this firmware is really slow :-(
But If I will wait a few weeks and T-Mobile provides the 2.1 update this time, will I still have root access after the OTA update? Or will I lose the root access?
Are there any good and stable, full hardware supported custom ROMs with Android 2.1?
Or what's the best custom ROM at the moment for the HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2?

1. There is an update for T-mobile - have you ever checked the HTC support page? It is still v1.5 but its an update... (will remove root)
2. 2.1 is unlikely to be released by t-mobile in the next couple of weeks, you're probably be looking at a month or so and I also don't think OTA updates are supported on your current build. Also you will NOT have root and probably won't be able to easily downgrade again to gain root access.
3. There are lots of custom roms try reading the hundreds of other posts asking which 2.1 update to use. They are all about the same stability wise and realistically speed wise too, though some vary to a very minor degree.
How exactly did you get root in the first place? Or are you talking about a recovery image installed?

1) I couldn't download the official update from the HTC website, because you have to provide your serial number. And with my number I'm not allowed to download the update. Because I own an T-Mobile G2 instead of the "real" HTC Hero
2) If I install the latest update from T-Mobile/HTC I lose my root access and it could be hard to get it back again :-( That's bad
To get root on my phone I followed this tutorial:
phandroid.com/2009/08/04/how-to-gain-root-access-on-your-htc-hero/
(there are other similar tutorials out there)

Have you contacted them about this? The G2 is just a brand name, they are exactly the same phones as the Hero's and T-mobile doesn't actually sell any "Hero" phones just the G2. Therefore, that update is definitely for you.
Alternatively you could install the update using the exe found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
Once again bear in mind that this wipes your data and will remove root and you may have a hard time getting it back.

Yes I contacted HTC and the answer was that I had to contact T-Mobile in my country. They told me that I lose the warranty if I install a update from the internet, because THEY didn't provide it.
But in other countries (e.g: Germany) T-Mobile provides this update.
So what should I do now? What's the best solution? Install an official HTC update and lose root access or install on of the custom ROMs out there?

2.1 ROM, super duper quick, backup your apps via titanium back, then restore once you have flashed the new ROM. Maybe a good idea to backup messages etc if you want them

Should I install Nandroid before flashing?
At the moment I "only" have root access and not installed any additional boot loader or other software/firmware.
Would like to try your suggested ROM (Cronos Droid Version 1.3). Do I have to wipe my sd card to install this ROM?
And do you run the Non Overclocked or the Overclocked version?

How to Root Hero offical 2.1

Previously, I used 1.6 without root, but now I face problem of memory shortage. Then I decide to root and make app2SD. I don't know whether when I upgrade to 2.1, the method of root will be the same as 1.6 or not?
Use a custom ROM based on 2.1. Don't update to official 2.1as getting root access or being able to flash custom ROMs may become very difficult.
There are loads of custom 2.1 ROMs which are aiming to be tweaked versions of the original without all the crap.
I personally highly recommend Villain12,... Others are saying Cronos is good,... aswel as Kimera,....
It to late I alreadyed upgrade offical's 2.1ROM about 3week ago(before post this forums).
So I can't root my Hero?
You will have to downgrade to 1.5.
Search the forum for instructions, I saw a related thread.
There is a guide http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=2096 which may help. Very positive response so far.

[Q] easy how-to root->flash standard kernel/rom and undo all if needed

Hi all,
I have a SGS2 from vodafone, it works ok but i'd really like to have an updated rom/kernel with android 2.3.4 and other bugfixes that are probably still months away from being available from Vodafone.
I don't want to try different customized roms, i'd just like to have an easy how-to to root and install an standard official, operator-free, updated rom/kernel from samsung.
When vodafone does release an updated rom and/or if i need to use warranty, i'd need a way to go back to my old rom and unroot.
I think this would be useful for other users as well, there is a lot of information in these forums and it's just overwhelming to have to dig in all this when you just want to root (this part is easier) and get an official updated rom/kernel.
Can anyone help?
Have a look at the xda bookmarks in my sig. There's official branded and unbranded firmware, and rooted firmware. Each of the threads gives a full and clear explanation of how to flash. If you read the 1st post carefully (and any posts they refer you to) then you can't go wrong.

Haven't updated in a long time, I have a few questions

Hey all,
I haven't updated my MoPho since I got it, and was wondering what the benefits would be if I were to update to some of the stuff we have available now. Back when I got my phone, you couldn't change the boot loader without losing 4G.
Currently, I basically just have a rooted MoPho with System version: 45.3.5.MB855.Sprint.en.US
I also noticed in the MoPho Android Development subforum that there are some ICS and Jellybean CyanogenMods available.
Would I be able to update to System version: 45.3.7.MB855.Sprint.en.US safely and still be able to flash to a CyanogenMod? (If not, can I update to 45.3.6?)
If I can flash to a CyanogenMod, would you suggest I flash to C9 or C10? Is there are particular poster's mod I should use?
Thanks guys.
Edit: Was looking at the !!!LOOK HERE FIRST!!!! thread, I noticed I am not sure what Kernal I am running. I assume I'd have to update this as well? Where would I check what kernal I have?
Unlocking the boot loader unfortunately will still kill 4g, so if you make use of 4g and feel its necessary, you won't want to unlock. Also, if you have taken the most recent over the air update from moto (check in about phone and see if android version is 2.3.5) you won't be able to unlock. If you don't need 4g and are on 2.3.4, then unlocking and installing CM will unlock so much more potential of your phone it'll blow your mind. To install CM, you'll need to do the following:
1) Unlock your boot loader
2) Install CWM recovery
3) Install cyanogenmod or another rom
There are howtos for each of these all around the forum. As well as stepbystep videos on YouTube by qbking77. If you get hung up somewhere well help you out.
