3G network problem - Touch Cruise 2 ROM Development

Hello, all.
I have 2 phones: IOLITE and Touch cruise.
I'm working in some place with strange GSM situation: my old cruise is on 3G network with full coverage, and Iolite shows 2G only status and low coverage..
Please assist how to solve the problem.
I checked my network connection properties on both telephones and it's configured for "Auto"...

Strange indeed..suppose you have the same operator for both? Or do you switch sim cards?
My experience is that I have better coverage with 2G than 3G. And therefor have a 2G/3G switch in my communicator.....also to save on battery.
Attached is a small program to check signal strength more in detail (per %). You can use to see how the pattern you describe develops. I do not use this programm anymore.
I have owned both a Touch cruise (Polaris) and have a Iolite now but can not say that there is a difference between the two (quality of radio).
Perhaps some other members can add.....

demon-resident: Maybe you already solved it. But for others. You must also look into Phone settings -> Band tab and keep both options on auto.

I suppose I have a RADIO problem - my IOLITE phone never gets 3G option...
May be some radio re-flash will solve this issue?

Or try hard-reset......back-up your data first......

can some one suggest me a new RADIO ?

Have not seen a seperate Iolite radio Rom circulating here.....only 0.41.30.12.....

This radio is with 3G function?

This is stock Iolite radio.....and for sure can handle 3G......
Check your boot screen which radio you have (when you do a soft reset).....the black screen with red letters....."R" is for radio.....

the radio is as previously mentioned - R 0.41.30.12
I performed a Hard Reset, but unfortunately I can't see a 3G icon on my phone...
May be I need to reflash a radio rom anyway?
If so, where can I get this radio?

Ask guys like Billabongstaff, serfer222 or roo303oom if they can make for you a seperate Iolite radio rom....install with RUU

demon-resident: Did you try to look at settings as I wrote i my previous post? Try to look in Phone setting options. One tab is called Network and this is not as important as another tab called Band. In that Band tab, try to manualy select different options from the list (Select your network type and Select your GSM/UMTS band) and apply those settings. You will see, if something changes.

On "Network Type" I have next options: Auto, GSM, WCDMA
On "Band": Auto, UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900)
I suppose that I have no GSM 1800, UMTS 2100, UMTS 850 etc...
It looks like I have a BAD ROM version

There are meanwhile some nice custom Rom's available to choose from......give it a go....

demon-resident: Yes, that is the core of your problem. Network type is ok, but in band, you should have these options: Auto, GSM(900+1800)+UMTS(900+2100), GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850) and UMTS(2100+800). New ROM should solve the problem.

The ROM has been downloaded.
But to flash it I need a Iolite Hard-SPL Unlocker...
I downloaded it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552481 but I have a problem with openning the EXE file inside the zip. This may be a problem of the file, or may be a problem with my PC. It strange, but no problems with other files....
Can some one "repack" it for me? or may be some one has an alternative link with other "unlocker"?...
I posted this question on the "Hard SPL" post.. but no answer till now.

Show UMTS band in phone settings

I found this setting in the registry to show the UMTS band, it will also let you switch between UMTS and Edge.. now i have fully tested this yet since i live in a edge area and work in a umts area.. havent been to work yet today, but i made a cab for it, after installing this cab the menu is listed in settings/phone/ band tab
Just FYI I have yet this with the original HTC French Rom.
i forgot to mention this reg hack came from my cingular 8525 but dont see why the other hermes would be any different

Ok so i link my pc and the 8525 via usb or bluetooth. Load the file on the 8525 and run it? Is it able to run this and install without unlocking it? Im just trying to gather all the info i can before doing anything to it. I plan on unlocking it but still have a lot more reading to do.
yes just transfer it to your phone and click it, it will install the reg entry
works good thanks now i can stay on 3g when streaming instead of shifting to gsm

Will this edit allow me to manually go back and forth between Edge and UMTS?
Can you tell me the location of the key you edited?
yes it will allow you to switch, the reg key is
HKLM\Software\OEM\PhoneSetting change the value from 0 to 1

Awesome. Thanks very much for your reply.
I now have 2 drop down menus in the band tab under settings.
Select your network type with 3 choices:
1) Auto
2) GSM
3) WCDMA (Does WCDMA=UMTS, or 3G?)
Select your GSM/UMTS band:
1) Auto
2) GSM (900+1800)+UMTS(2100)
3) GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
4) UMTS(2100+800)
I'm on Cingular so I'd like to know which GSM band to use when I want to specify for my phone to only use GSM.
This could potentially save a large amount of battery resources for me and others that don't need 3G unless we really need the blazing speed...
Also, do you have to soft reset for the settings to take effect?

Band setting that worked for me on Cingular is:
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
I needed to stop all 'data calls' before it will allow the change so I went into memory under settings and stopped all programs that are data - for me it was Goodlink (called 'email' under the running programs). Then I put it into flight mode by clicking on the signal bar icon, waited a few seconds, and then turned flight mode off. That seemed to clear the data call. After turning off flight mode and waiting the 15 seconds before it will allow me to click on 'settings' in that dialog box, I made the switch to GSM.
To switch back to UMTS, I just repeated the steps.
This is a useful hack. Now I can test whether the poor battery life issue is Goodlink, or UMTS.
Thanks Shogun
Ok one more newb question! I unzipped it and it has two files. 0001 file and an html file. Do i load one of these and run it or do i load the hole zip file on to the 8525 and click it? Dont laugh its the first time i will load something on it. Thanks!
there should only be 1 file in that zip, should only be a cab file... if there are more then disregard the others and only load the cab file...
He did the same thing I did. When you unzip it, it says .cab file but winzip still shows the winzip icon on it and he unzipped it again. Just drag/copy the .cab file over only unzipping it one time!

Thanks for this hack, I wasn't getting 3g at all before at home, now that I set it manually it is showing up "U" on my phone and i'm gettting 1010mbp/s speeds on data!

This is driving me CRAZY. can SOMEONE help

Hey all
Back when i was using Black Majik, when I was connected to a UMTS network, the wireless Home plugin would show 'UMTS T-Mobile'
however, now, with the Schaps 3.60a rom, it only shows T-mobile, and with TNT it only shows TMobile
Is there any way possible to get it to show UMTS?
with thanks
also, which radio rom do you all reccommend for T-Mobile UK?
Im assuming you are in a 3G zone? Is 3G disabled via the comm manager or via the registry?
i know exactly what you mean! This is what i think is causing a problem with the network name not being sent to my Parrot 3200LS car kit.
Would be very glad of an answer to this.
I too noticed this problem and just assumed that it was a display setting as i've still seen the carrier signal thing in the top bar turn to the U for UMTS.
There are a couple of settings in your registry that control this.
Take a look at:
HKLM/SOFTWARE/OEM/PhoneSetting
There are two values here that are of interest.
The first one is Enable3GLongName. This should be turned on (set to 1).
The second value is for LongNamePrefix
This can basically be anything you want. UMTS is a bit of a favourite, but you could call it whatever you like (Next G in Australia for instance - it would display 'Next G Telstra').
Jasjamming's ROMs have these settings set by default whereas Schap's do not - thus the reason for the change to your operator display.
if that works mate you are an absolute hero!!! Just trying it now.
You are indeed a complete and total Hero! This worked for me, although Enable3GLongName was already enabled, changing the prefix from 3G to UMTS was the part that worked for me!
Now my parrot says UMTS T-Mobile again!! I really cant thank you enough mate!!
Cheers mate - glad I could help
*deleted my post*
can this be lobbed into the wiki?! i'm not sure how to edit it, but if someone else is then great, otherwise i'll try and figure it out over the weekend!

Questions regarding Hero

hi all,
just recently bought a hero and sorry for the noob questions. any help will be greatly appreciated.
1.) How do i activate the green notification light for any new notifications? so far i can only use the trackball to flash for a number of minutes and thats it.
2.) how can i permanently use 3g as a signal without switching back to edge? i prefer 3g because it is faster, but when i use the web, it reverts to edge making it slower when browsing. i want it never to switch back to edge just 3g.
3.) How do you update radio and rom? is it the same with winmo? i have a topaz and im currently using hero.
Thanks for any feedback!
So far the only answer i found was the notification light as a bug or a defect. line switching is still unsolved and updating.

1) It works as it is stated in the user's manual. How can you state that it is a bug or defect? Funny... Just because it works that way on Magic or G1 does not mean that it has to be the same on Hero.
2) You cannot as your phone will automatically switch between them when one another is not available. You phone will select 3G only if it is available around where you are. If it switches to Edge/GPRS/whatever, that means you don't have 3G signals around you.
3) There are 1.000 posts on the forum here regarding updating ROM, etc. Search is our best friend.

You can force HSDPA, but you do so at your own risk!
You need to download AnyCut from the Market and create new shortcut to the activity "Phone Info". From this short cut, you access a screen which gives lots of diagnostic info about the phones state and there is an option to "Set preferred network type". By default this is "WCDMA Preferred", but if you want to force to always use HSDPA you should select "WCDMA Only".
Note if you do this, your phone will never drop back to 2G, even if a 2G signal is available and a 3G one isn't.
I wouldn't advise playing around with any of the other options in this screen unless you know what you are doing!

Dave

[Q] Turning off 3g spike pure ics

Hi,
I am running Spike Pure Ics v4.0.
I have a problem, it automatically switches between network 2G/3G.
I want to turn off 3g for always as it just consumes too much battery and i have network connectivity issues also sometime signals just become 0.
I can't find option for the same in Mobile Networks.
Tried searching threads but dint find anything...
Is thr any way by which i can disable/enable 3g.
Dial *#*#info#*#* go to phone info and you'll find what you need.
I have exactly the same problem. I tried the *#*#info#*#* thing and even though it lets me choose the radio mode, it does not change it. It always goes back to auto, even though I chose "GSM only". Does anyone have it working? I tried it with Spike Pure ICS 4.2 and 6.1.

upgrade dude to 7.0 or above
that option is present
or use *#2263#
be sure to use stock dialer
Thanks for the tip. However, I am unable to use Spike Pure ICS v7 and above. 6.1 is the newest one that works for me. When I try v7 and up, I get a kernel panic after installing it. I don't know whether I have a weird specimen of SGS2 or what...
I also tried the number *#2263# but that gives me only a selection of bands. I am not sure which bands are not used for HSDPA. I guess 800 and 1800, am I right?

3G/4G Switch App???

I just switched from a rooted One XL that was running Scott's CleanRom 4.5DE to a new One X+ that I've unlocked and rooted.
One of the features I miss the most is the ability to force the phone into 3G for most of my use with the ability to turn on 4G when I am watching video or something that requires more data.
Is there an app that works well at switching back and forth easily? I did a search in the play store and there are a couple in there but they seemed to be geared for phones that are CDMA/LTE rather than H+/LTE.
Thanks!!!

I'm using Widgetsoid...add a widget to the screen and choose the "4G" plugin. That will bring you to the radio menu where you can select GSM/WCDMA only instead of GSM/WCDMA/LTE.
I use Phone Info by [email protected]
but the setting has to be changed every time you reboot

You may need to toggle the radio off/on after you change between 3G/4G to force it after you make a change.

Seems no matter which I pick it just resets to the standard option.
If I turn the radio off first I can set whatever I want, but, upon turning back one I still get 'LTE' even if it isn't the selected network type.
EDIT: I see I have the same problem as 'moregadget' in that no matter what I do it just seems to go back to its default settings. It must be some BS AT&T did to prevent us from opting out of the battery sucking LTE connection.
I am on an unlocked bootloader & rooted on the Elegancia 3.1.0 AT&T rom.

I went back to my original One X for a couple weeks and put the X+ away. I'll come back to it but right now its not fully functional for me.

So I was loading the Team Venom ViperXL+ 1.2.0 ROM yesterday and had a moment where I felt like an idiot. As I was selecting the items on the ROM that I wanted to load I ran across the area where I select what 3G/4G icons I want and I suddenly realized something I haven't seen on the One X+ forum but was prevalent on the original One X.
When you have the AT&T 4G icons in use you can't manually select the network however when you load a ROM that allows you to use the typical H+/3G icons that I believe are on the international version you can.
