Anyone getting weak WIFI signal? - S740, S743 General

I dont know what may be wrong but my wifi signal is really weak...
I'm like sitting 50cm away from my router and my phone get only 2/4 signal.and when I go to the next room I'm getting 1/4signal.While in the pas i was getting 4/4 when sitting close to it and 3/4 in the next room.
My laptop gets full signal strength anywhere in my house.I have also tried using nokia express music which was getting full signal too.
I have changed my phone's wifi settings from "best battery" to "best performance" but still nothing!
Any Ideas?

Hi,
got the same issue on my device some months ago. I sent the device to the HTC service center. The internal antenna was broken. Got inoformation that this could happen on a 740. So your's is probably demaged as well. After it comes back from repair it works well.
Hope it helps
Claus

Thank you for you reply.
You might be right, because my problem started after I dropped my phone once(the only time I have dropped it),I guess that then my antenna was damaged. The point is that my warranty has expired and I'm really afraid that I will have to pay too much for a repair.
Did you have a warranty? If not,how much did the repair cost?
Thank you.

[Q] Used external antenna last night at home, now I have no signal in town.

Plugged in the external antenna directly to the port, wasn't incredible impressed with the signal gain but my signal seemed really bad last night without it so I figured with the weather I wasn't going to be able to use it at all.
But now i'm in town and I have barely any signal. I'm 10 feet from an AP and my wifi is only 1 bar.
Any ideas? I have that rubber protector that goes over the antenna and serial port off, but it doesn't make sense for that to really have any effect. I'm thinking it is still trying to use the external antenna even though its not plugged in?
Noticed any difference after rebooting the phone? Not sure if you are referring to the 3G/1X cellular signal and/or wifi signal on the Eris - is your VZW's PRL roaming list up-to-date (do a *22899 OTA)
Sometimes, it could be a cell tower outage issue in your area/location?
I'll try the *22899
I rebooted it, I was referring to both the wifi and the 3g/1x. Wifi did actually get a few more bars of signal in the building. But when I got back home and plugged in the external antenna again (nothing left to lose) I get 2 bars on 3g.
Talked to verizon and they sent me a new phone. I was pretty happy about that. I bought the phone used and left my insurance active hoping I could sneak it through. She said I didn't have insurance on it but she pushed it though as a warranty repair. I just payed for the overnight shipping. I'll try and do a factory reset on it when my new on shows up just to get some peace of mind. I'd still like to know wtf before I got plugging the antenna into the new phone. Seems like maybe the internal amp is blown? I can't imaging that happening and the radio still functioning at all. But maybe it tuned down the radio power from the extra gain on the radio and is still stuck there.
Just weird man. Talked to the company that I bought the antenna from he said he's never heard of that happening and he's been around for a while.
What kind of phone are they sending you? another eris?

[Q] Weak Wifi Signal..Help me, im desperate!!!

Hello guys..i bought a RAZR XT910 before about 3 weeks and i didnt notice any problems with it at all..its battery life the way i organised it with smart actions is very very good, better than my iphone 4...i have as well those black marks on the screen on low lighting and black pictures but i dont mind this either..as u can almost never see it...my problem is my weak wifi signal..i never noticed it those last 20 days as i have been working on my phone mostly on my computer desk so the phone was next to the router..the only place my phone gets 4/4 in wifi signal its when its next to the router..at 1 meter distance the signal gets 3/4 strength..at 5 meters 2/4 strength and at 10 meters the signal its lost..and this is only when im at the same room that has the router..if i go to another room the signal gets lost..especially when i close the door...i never had any wifi problem with my previous smartphones and i even had wifi outside of my house...please help me here..im quite desperate..what shall i do? return it and demand a replacement? ask for my money back? is there any way to fix this?
I don't have that problem but I'm wondering if you get it with other networks? Also have you tried resetting your router?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
yea i get it with all wifi networks...for example my university, work, home..etc
Hmmm. I just ran the Speedtest app and got 12Mbps download over my wifi. It would be interesting to try that a few places and show it to VZ. Maybe they can test it on their network.

Get wifi analyzer and see if you have good signal. I notice that the Wi-Fi graphic is conservative.
my RAZR was having trouble operating on WPA2-Personal secured wifi network.. so i changed the wifi settings to WPA-Personal with TKIP and the problems are gone so you might wanna try this before you RMA.
Mine had problems with dropped and weak signal which turns out to be because I had Bluetooth on as well. If I turn bluetooth off wifi works perfectly
My WiFi reception is appalling. It only see's my home network where as my three year old HTC Hero is seeing seven!
With my package I have the ability to connect to BT Openzone hotspots around the UK.
Not much use if you can't go more than 15ft from a router without the connection dropping!
Bluetooth is off and I have tried several WiFi analysers from the market, all show a very weak signal.
Hi
On mine, yes the wifi signal (bars) are showing less then with htc desire, but I can connect without problems even the router is on the second floor and I am siting on the first, so reachable from the whole house.
I do experience, that it takes a little bit longer to find the wifi as with the desire, but once connected, works just fine.
I do not experience problems with hidden networks. Mine is not broadcasting the id, still connection is stable.

The bars on mine seem less than what the signal actually is. I connect to my home wifi just fine, from all over the house. I also connect to work's wifi from what seems like the same distance as my previous phone (Dinc)
i'm using d-link dws-125 (usb router)
when i connect and start using internet, the network disconnects in a few seconds. then it connect again and the same... etc.
please, help!!!
same problem here, hope a solution can be found as the phone is unusable in its present state
The "single ball" is enough to achieve 10mbit at my place, however, I upgraded my firmware to OpenWRT and now I get two full lines and the "ball" in the bedroom.
Stock netgear firmware is.. Incomplete. :S
Wi-fi back
Hi everybody,

hope this helps somebody
used to have this issue with weak wifi signals, but after installing the 85P radio update, it's gotten a bit better.

[Q] Signal loss - Death Grip

Alright, I read the review on this phone and, after having the GalaxyS 1, I thought trying an HTC would be a great idea as my GS1 had extreme screen burn in; which led me to opt for an HTC instead of GS2 - the cheaper alternative of course.
I was pretty happy with this phone. Somewhat smaller than what I expected, though it runs fairly well with ICS and HTC Sense loaded.
Now the ridiculous issue. This phone has a severe case of 'death grip'. I've had quite a couple of frustrating weeks trying to figure out what on earth was causing the signal to drop completely from 2 or 3 bars to dead, when picking the phone up to text.
Before I considered googling 'hand signal absorb htc', or similar keywords to that effect, I tested my theory by holding the phone at the top two edges and then in my palm again; in the same position both times. The result? 5 bars to two bars, or even in some cases one bar. The signal where I live isn't excellent, however it's not terrible either. With my GS1 having no issue with signal drops. Just holding the Desire X in the palm of my hand, under the table results in complete signal loss.
This is an absolute joke. I've missed really important phone calls and the majority of sms's arrive late due the lovely signal loss regain repetition, essentially causing the phone do not receive calls, even though, provided it does have 3 or so bars.
So, am I the only one here who has this issue, or for that matter; a faulty phone? Really Really disappointed.
I do have a signal drop problem as I already wrote on another post and nobody answer:
"I have a lot of signal drops on GSM/EDGE and also 3G/HDSPA? The signal is full but, the phone is in stand by, the signal drops and I loose calls. Does anyone have this problem?
Also I noticed when the phone switches from 3G to GSM/EDGE first I have a no signal period (couple of seconds)."
I also had this problem with an LG Optimus 2x when updated to Android 4.0.4.

Sounds like a faulty antenna. Either that or you have lead hands.
It should be a cheap fix at any local repair shop or free if you take it back to the shop for a replacement.

What I don't understand is, when i'm on an actual phone call, there's no issue with quality or signal loss. Sounds like the phone rom is preserving the antennas power in idle mode?

[Q] Frequent loss of signal - CLOSED!!

I am seeing random/frequent/constant loss of signal on my S2 even while sitting on my office desk for hours. Either I have to reboot or have to switch on and off the airplane mode to bring the signals back.
I dropped this phone in water on last friday and once it was dried up it was working totally fine. At that time I was using Chameleon ROM(4.1.2), Dori Kernel 8.43.v76 and MS4 radio. I flashed XXLS8 modem/radio as I had seen good results on this modem. On Monday I flashed Sentinel ROM v4.6 (4.2.2), stock kernel and I have started facing the signal drops. Blaming it to the modem, I flashed another one XXLS6 (about which I have read good reviews for my location) and I was still getting signla drops. I had been on Sentinel ROM couple of times and never faced such issue. Still, blaming it on ROM, I flashed AOSB Kitkat (another fav of mine) today and I am still getting the signal drops.
I am unable to pinpoint the source of this issue and cant keep on flashing modems when I actually know that XXLS8 and XXLS6 are really good ones for me.
A search on xda led me to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2739573 which suggests deleting CellBroadcastReceiver.apk from /system/app. Tried even that, but didnt work out.
I am ruling out the waterboarding as a cause because I saw it working perfectly for 2 days after it was dried up.
Any help/suggestion/information is appreciated.
EDIT: I thought it was solved as it didnt appear for few hours. But since last night its back and its kinda frequent. It displays blank triangle in this case. recently it has also started showing full signal (emergency calls only and without 2g/3g signals) and i am unable to receive or make calls.
:BUMP:
Now there are no signals at all. Am getting desperate. Flashed stock rom again to no avail. Tried Different kernels/roms but no success. Anything?
You sound like you have been very thorough in what you have tried....
The fact that you have flashed different ROMs/kernels/modems without any change kinda rules out a software issue. I'm afraid (from what I've read) you ARE facing a hardware issue. Water penetration will cause a whole collection of issues that may/may not appear immediately. It will cause corrosion......and corrosion is a gradual process......so a part of the phone that *may* have appeared unaffected, may well work for a time before it actually fails......

Thanks for replying. Finally a senior member looked at this thread
I agree that corrosion, being gradual process, can screw up a lot of things but its kinda indigestible for me that in one week its condition will be deteriorated to this level. anyways, if i visit a service center, what parts I might get changed for this? I know you havent seen my phone from inside, and you cant say anything at a concrete level but just want to know that someone with this kinda problem is looking at what kinda parts to be changed and what kinda bill?
The components on these boards are in general, tiny.....and their connectors are even smaller.....so corrosion at this pace is entirely possible.
The symptoms tally with this too....increasing corrosion = worsening performance.
It's either going to be really good news......or it's going to be chuck the phone away and start again news.
There is a white connecting cable in the phone that carries the network signal from the antenna to the main board.....
The cost depends where the fault is......
If the fault is on the board housing the antenna, it's pocket change....
If it's the mainboard side.......
The good news is that both of these boards can be independently sourced and easily DIY replaced.
The problem with micro electronics is that it is virtually impossible to replace individual components on a given board....and any authorised repairer won't even consider it....they'll just replace the entire board.

Many many thanks. DIY won't bug me, i have steady hands
But how would i know which components are faulty?
Ha....that's the million dollar question ain't it......
Having viewed that video I linked to, to refresh my memory, there are 3 modules that potentially could be giving you issues......
Antenna/speaker module
USB port module
Mainboard
It's going to be a case of replacing each one, one at a time, until the issue resolves itself. The first two are the cheaper side of things, and are where my gut instinct says the problem lies......
Sorry mate...it's the only way without taking it to a service centre.
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
Your link talks about changing the usb port. There i read that it hosts aerial connector too. Is it the part responsible for receiving signals or is it antenna module?
Btw, awesome guide you got there.:good:
Meanwhile i flashed stock rom again and after ten minutes of booting it finally got signals. I dont know for how long its gonna stay but i m glad that it saw signals after 2 days of struggle.
The speaker module houses the actual antenna. It has a couple of sprung connectors which press on corresponding plates on the USB module. Some people have said that modifying the USB board has had an effect on the signal strength.
The speaker / antenna module is the cheapest part to replace....best to start there......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.
This whole fiasco was a great learning for me. Lost imei and baseband on my way and recovered them too. And looks like it will end in me performing a DIY on my phone.
For now the signals are stable for more than 12 hours which is like the most I have seen since 3 days. I will see if I can utilize your guide this weekend.
Thanks again for your help and time.
Can loosing imei/baseband be the cause of loosing connectivity?
EDIT 1: And my troubles are far from over. It still needs to be switched to aeroplane mode and switch it off to get the connectivity back or a reboot is required. The worst problem is that now the signal shows full in the status bar but with "No connectivity" or "Emergency calls only" which is even worse to handle.
Looks like it can connect to the network provider normally but cant hold the connection for long and requires a reset. Will changing USB port help in this kind of case?
EDIT 2: After a whole day of being on stock and switching the phone into aeroplane mode again and again, I thought of giving custom roms another try. On a KK ROM and on another JB ROM (4.1.2) it was a total struggle to even connect to a network. Tried various modes - wcdma, gsm, auto but nothing worked. Tried different modems too but it just ended up in making the phone really hot. Experimented so much that even when the sim was in, i got the message - "insert sim card to access network". Back to stock rom now.
I don't know whether there is any circuitry inside the speaker / antenna module that will cause issues with signal.....the fact that some people say that modifying the USB board affects signal leads me to think that there probably isn't and that it's all housed on the USB board........
And I'd advise that you back up your IMEI and EFS folder while it is intact.....before you attempt to flash anything else.....
A good app for this is ktool on the play store.......
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.hellcat.droiddev.ktool
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
Backed up everything a long time back itself when I saw myself become flash maniac. thanks for the advice though.
I checked up USB port on eBay and it is not available in my country. From US shipping and all makes it unaffordable . Will be visiting a service center today or tomorrow.
Eventually Waterboarding was the culprit. Got a call from service center today that they found waterlogging on mainboard. Getting it replaced now.
Heavy on pockets but still cheaper than an equally capable new phone.
Thanks keithross39 for all the help. Appreciate it.
No problem fella......just be prepared for other issues too (might never happen.....but......)
If the water damaged the main board, other boards might have been affected too......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
I was starting to feel relieved after knowing mainboard issue, but here you are, scaring me more
Alright, I will keep an eye on the day to day activities of my phone for few days once its back. I just hope it comes out alive.
Lol...just mentioning the "worst case scenario*......but on the bright side, every other board in the phone costs pocket change.......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
Asked the service center guys and they say everything is fine with other components. Looks like they are not interested in my pocket change
One last question, does changing the mainboard changes your imei number?
An authorised service centre should be able to re write your IMEI....but under normal circumstances it will change.....

LG G5 network problems after attempting GPS fix - only 4G/3G - no 2G signal

As the title goes I tried to make a GPS fix buy adding a little thin plastic under the pins showed in the video tutorial I used but after assembling back the phone noticed that I cannot connect to 2G anymore. I switch to 4G and 3G with full coverage but when I try to went back on 2G the network signal drops and phone says "Emergency calls only". I opened it again and removed the plastic board and switched it on and got slmost perfect 2G coverage but my microphone stopped working - nobody was able to hear me speaking so I opened it again and added a little card board piece on the place and now I have good mic with good 4G/3G signal but again with no 2G signal again. Can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong ? Also where are the exact places of the 2G/3G/4G/GPS antenas ? I travel a lot on places with low 4G and even low 3G coverage so I really need the 2G mode again. Please help me fix it as it was before. I need 2G more than GPS so if somebody tell me how to reverse this would really appreciate it, thank you !

Ima follow this one closely. Mine has the very same issues ive bassicly asked the same thing
Mine does it one all three. Rarely picks up 2g gsm network gets crappy 3g and lte. I use lte discovery to verify all this. Now i have noticed that if i pinch the chin or hold the phone like laying in bed only by the chin i get killer signal and even pick up 2g at the same time as lte.
I watched other devices all get band 5 lte and gsm at the same time.
I cant find any confirmation on where the antennes are even located in this device.
Today I noticed that my sim tray stays slightly out of the phone body so I tried to push it in and it wasn't going any furder as before. So I though there must be something in the tray preventing it to push in till the end and I used a magnifyer to see inside and noticed a small plastic that seemed from the same material of the pick I used to open the phone so I got it out and now the sim tray is closing nice again and now I'm able to connect to 2G but still the reception is not good as it was and it drops from time to time... Still this is an advance in the right direction. I think I had broken or bent or moved something slightly off place from these several interventions so I'm f****d up.
Please guys don't try to make any gps fixes because you will do more harm than good ! That is my advice !
If still somebody can help me, please write ! Thank you !

Nobody here is engineer at LG. And nobody here has any real solution for GPS / 2G / 3G fix. Looks like GPS breaks again even after sending it to repair. This LG G5 has been the crappiest phone I ever bought. I'll be buying a G6 soon.

The 3pins in the video are for the Volume buttons. The REAL GPS antenna are the ones next to the headphone jack.
So far I experimented that the cell antennas lies at the top of the phone since covering the top-middle section of the phone Cell signal drops.
Maybe the plastic shim you put in is too thick that it's interfere with other internal components, like the black RF antenna ribbon that runs across the top section of the G5. See if removing the plastic piece resolves the problem
Hi guys,
Just want to let you know that I gave the phone to a service and they found out that I broke some of the pins even without noticing. That is why this problem occured! They were able to replace them so now my phone is live and kicking again with full network coverage on all bands (2g,3g,4g). So happy with it ! So go ahead and bring your phones to a repair service center and make sure it will be a good one! First I went to affiliate LG service and they told me that most of the things are unrepairable and will have to change the whole motherboard which costs as a new phone so I lost any hope fixing it but later a friend of mine recommended another service where the guy told me he will inspect all the parts of the phone and will call me if he finds anything suspicious or broken. So I left the phone and after 2 days he called back and told me that 4 pins were broken and 2 more damaged and bent badly. He also told me he thinks that if we change them the problem should be solved so I agreed and he did fantastic work on the phone and now works as new !
So don't be disappointed and find a good service where they can try to help you. Also when you are doing some mods to your phones please be very careful!! I confess that I wasn't careful while doing the mod - I was at work and even didn't had the necessary tools for the task, also the colleagues were around and distracting me so I wasn't able to focus entirely on the task and did more harm than good! Good luck !
Thread may be closed, problem solved !
