I searched and found some stuff relevant to the G1, but rather than assume it's the same, I thought I'd ask here- just in case!
So,
1) what is its purpose?
2) how do i (and should i) clear it?
I've read that it can speed up the phone a bit, so its worth a go
when i boot in the recovery console (home + power on) and i try to "wipe sd:dalvik cache", i am prompted to press home to confirm, but then i get an error:
"Error : run deldalv via console"
is this referring to the adb mount thing? if so, how do i do it???
cheers!
for info;
i found out that the recovery image throws an error even though the cache is wiped

Hey guys
So I've been a quiet member for ages but now, I have problems with my Hero (Android 1.5) and need some help. I've read online but I don't seem to see anyone else that has this problem - when I go into recovery mode, I can't do the USB-MS thing, nor can I backup like point 3).
I just did something different (really not sure what), but my phone now won't go into recovery when its plugged into the computer and Win7 says the device driver was not successfully installed.
"2. Make sure your phone is in recovery mode (Home + Power)
Plug your phone into your computer and select "USB-MS toggle" in recovery
Place the Custom ROM on your SD card in the main directory and press Home when it has finished copying over
3. Select Backup/Restore > Nand backup > confirm with Home > Wait
(or Nand + Ext if you have A2SD setup)
4. Press back then select Wipe from the main menu, then select:
Wipe data/factory reset > Home
Wipe cache > Home
Wipe Dalvik-cache > Home
Wipe SD:ext partition > Home
Press back button
Select Flash Zip from SD Card
Select the file
Press Home to confirm"
I have already done the recovery ROM thing and I'm trying to install VillainROM (not quite there yet, but just mentioning it). Can someone please help me before I lose my mind Thanks guys!
OK, can you get into recovery when the phone is NOT plugged into the computer? It's not necessary to be plugged into USB to do from step 3 onwards.

Hi,
Can you post which guide you're using. I think you need to install a patched recovery like AmonRA though.
There is a "rooting" guide which I think you will need to follow first.
Ok, this wasn't the exact one but they're very similar
Oh, got this error, so please excuse the following:
villainrom co uk/vBwiki/index.php/Installing_Custom_ROMs
I compared a lot of different ones and I'm not sure which one I posted...
I can get into recovery without it being plugged in, but the computer doesn't pick the phone up if I plug it in after its in recovery mode.
@pulser_g2: I've done all of this stuff:
•Install HTC Sync from here
•Download Universal Androot
•Download AmonRA Recovery v1.7.0.1.img – easier if you rename this “recovery.img” when it is on your sdcard
Place both downloaded files on your SD Card
Root & Recovery
•Download and install Astro File Manager from the Market
•Open Astro and find and install Universal Androot from your sdcard:
Select UniversalAndroot.apk > Open App Manager > Install > Settings> [tick] Unknown Sources > OK > Back > Select UniversalAndroot.apk > Open App Manager > Install > Install > Open
•In the app and choose the correct version from the dropdown box:
•Superuser for Android 2.0~2.2 – if you have updated your phone recently
•Superuser for Android 1.5~1.6 – if you have refused updates recently or your country/provider hasn’t released one yet
Then choose: “Root ”
Wait until it says “Woot ! Your device is rooted !” and exit the program.
•Download and install Android Terminal Emulator from the Market
•Run “Terminal Emulator” the program and type in the following:
su [enter]
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img [enter]
reboot recovery [enter]
•Your phone should now restart and place you in recovery mode. You can also do this manually by turning off your phone and press Home + Power to turn it back on.
Do I still need AmonRA? Is that from MarketPlace?
Hello XDA-Developers Community,
I've a Big Problem With My Toshiba Folio 100.
I Bought It, and Today I Try To Install The FolioMod v1.4.
I've Made Everything Right.
When Appears The "!" Symbol, I've Clicked On "Home" Button, And Selected The "Apply sdcard:update.zip" Option.
It Gives Me An Error:
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
E:Can't mount SDCARD:command
E:Can't mount DEFAULT_PATH
Finding update package...
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1
(no such file of directory)
E: can't mount SDCARD:/update.zip
Formatting MISC:...
And I've Discovered That The Answer To That Problem Is Use a 1GB or 2 GB SD Card (Usually With a Size More Than 2GB Have That Error).
So, After I Received That Error, I Select "Home" Again, and Choose The Option To Reboot The System.
After That The LCD Turns Black, and Never More I Could Turn On The Tablet.
The White Light On "Power/Battery" Is Always On. And I've Tried Everything To Reboot The Folio 100.
The Only Think That I Haven't Did Yet, Was Waiting That Battery Be at 0% and Folio 100 Turns Real Off, And Then Try To Turn It On. (I Didn't Do It, Because I'm Waiting For The Loss of Battery, That Will Be Much Time).
Can Someone Help Me?
Sorry For My Bad English.
Kind Regards,

Power off can be performed after long press on power button - led will stop blinking, red or white that does'nt matter, device will be switched off.
While device is in boot cycle, pressing power later vol_up - should bring You to very simple memu with really few choises
- vol up = reset
- vol down = ignore and boot
after vol up:
- vol up = factory reset
- vol down = install update.zip from sd card which must be fat32 formatted
If device was rooted then update.zip can contain any update, if not then bootloader will check for its (update.zip) validity - in most cases proper rsa signature.

You have the lastest Toshiba softer update on your Folio. You have to change your recovery. Go to FolioMod 1.4 page and find on it something like "and for users that installs lastest update go here..." and go there or just install via fastboot or you can sing it.

You need to add the directory containing the "AdbWinApi.dll" to Windows' path under Environment Variables, so Windows know where to look for the necessary files when you enter commands in the shell.
For this exercise I'm going to assume that you have installed the Android SDK in the directory called "android-sdk-windows" on your C: hard drive. If you have it installed somewhere else, change the path I'm mentioning below accordingly.
Go to the Windows "Control Panel".
Click on "System and Security".
Click on "System".
Click on "Advanced system settings" in the left column of the window you're in.
Find the button called "Environment Variables" in the window that opens (it's at the bottom on the first tab).
Scroll down in the "System variables" box until you find "Path".
Select "Path" and click the "Edit" button.
At the very beginning of the input field called "Variable value" enter the following:
"C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools;" (without the quotes).
Do not remove any of the other paths, and make sure you have a semi colon at the end of the new path you're adding.
Reboot.

Hey guys, I don't know if this has already been addresses, but I will post it anyway.
When installing TWRP 3.0.2-0, you may not be able to wipe /system because the resource is busy.
I have found a workaround for this by using the terminal in TWRP's Advanced Options
Steps:
1. Boot into Recovery by holding the power and volume down button simultaneously until you reach the bootloader.
NOTE: If you get a prompt asking for read/write on system partitions, slide the slider to allow it, you will get stuck if you don't.
NOTE: Check your logs too, the log should be where the Task Switch button us in Android.
2. After TWRP has been loaded, go to Advanced > Terminal
3. Type "umount -l" (without quotations), and press the enter.
INFO: If all goes well, your /system partition should have been unmounted.
INFO: This method can be used for other pesky partitions that need to be unmounted.
Hope this helps!
Did you guys also experience that /system only stays mounted when a usb cable is connected to the device? I've never had this problem while disconnected when booting into recovery.
Even easier, just flash squid2's custom TWRP, no more mounting issues: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e-2015/development/twrp-squid-twrp-recovery-moto-e-lte-t3137649
This phone is really starting to piss me off. I lost all of my data two days ago when a TWRP backup didn't save my lock screen pattern, and now I can't even properly get into TWRP.
What do I do?
So I did some searching. I bypassed the password (losing all of my data again) and did a Format Data. Got through the initial setup (I skipped everything I could skip) to get to the Launcher. Then I copied 'LE_X2_X820-OS-OP-FGXOSOP5801910121S-5.8.019S.zip' (stock 19s rom) to Internal Storage through Windows. I promptly reboot to recovery and *bam* I'm hit with Decrypt Data again leaving me unable to flash the example rom. FFS, I never set a password.
Also 'default_password' doesn't work.
decrypt
What I did when I was on the stock ROM was to just keep hitting cancel and booting back into TWRP through the recovery and using hardware buttons to boot back in a couple times until the decrypt data screen didn't show when booting into TWRP.
Found a work around that might work on all phones having this issue
I too had the same password issue and I tried a lot, and I really mean, A LOT of ways to get it working. I tried setting password and then applying the same in TWRP, I tried evein trying to connect my phone to pc so that it showed me my phone on pc through which I could be able to transfer files to phone after doing a clean wipe everytime it asked for password and that too did not work out.
So I got another idea, if I wipe the data folder and clear cache once it asks for password, and then go to bootloader and connect through ADB, then I might get to copy the files by command line ADB and that might work and it did not too.
So another thing I tried, downloaded various versions of TWRP and finally got hitched with the latest 3.1.x version. There after doing all wipe I mounted the USB Drive and connected my phone to pc and opened ADB, and that did the work.
So follow these steps and let me know if it works but the key here is PATIENCE; if you have not got it, give up the process (I kept on trying continuously for more than 12 hours and finally got it done.):
Step 1: When prompted for password, Click Cancel and Swipe the slider to modify partition details.
Step 2: Do a wipe by formatting data (type in yes to do so), factory reset and then clear the cache and data folder again.
Step 3: Goback to Mount and click Mount USB Drive/Device ( Has the option in TWRP 3.1.x versions )
Step 4: Connect your phone to your PC and open up the ADB ( Its a whole different ball game ***Also phone wont detect in ADB unless drivers are installed )
Step 5: Type "adb devices" withoput the "" and press Enter. If it shows your phone then you are good to go OR go back to the mount and try mounting the USB again ( try with different variations: sometimes reconnecting your USB cable before or after doing so might work, sometimes re-wiping and re-formatting might work ). Keep entering the command until phone gets detected.
Step 6: When connected, type in "adb push <path/to/rom-or-flash files/with/file-name> </data>"
Obviously without the "" or the <>s. Repeat for all the files.
Step 7: Now go to Install and the "data" folder and then install the files one by one.
Thank me later
Can someone explain what I encountered for "twrp decrypt password" command as given below?
Most of the time I use PC adb shell commands for wipe, sideload, etc. I tried twrp decrypt command as below:
Assume my Le Eco account password as "abc1de2f" and google account password as "XYZ".
~ # twrp decrypt XYZ -
Attempting to decrypt data partition via command line.
Failed to decrypt data.
Next I used Le Eco account password:
~ # twrp decrypt abc1de2f
Attempting to decrypt data partition via command line.
Failed to decrypt data.
Assuming I might have inserted a special character "&" in the Le Eco password at the time of account creation I entered as below:
~ # twrp decrypt abc1&de2f
/sbin/sh: de2f: not found
~ # Attempting to decrypt data partition via command line.
Failed to decrypt data.
On seeing de2f "not found" I tried:
~ # twrp decrypt abc1
Attempting to decrypt data partition via command line.
Failed to decrypt data.
[1]+ Done twrp decrypt abc1
~ # exit
Now I wonder what " [1]+ Done twrp decrypt abc1" means. I could recreate the same again too.

Heyyo, for future reference restoring a TWRP backup never seems to be able to keep lockscreen settings. It's been a longtime standing bug. I think the way Android saves it prevents tampering via backup and restore...
Just follow this guide to remove the lock after restore
https://www.howtogeek.com/240657/how-to-fix-pin-errors-after-restoring-from-twrp-android-backups/
Hey! So i had the same encryption problem. I somehow worked around it, and i know how but i dont know if you can replicate it?
So i had the TWRP 3.0.2-2x installed, and got the decryption thingie. I pressed cancel, went to install and browsed to the /sdcard folder, which obviously was empty.
After that i rebooted to bootloader and installed TWRP 3.1.0-0 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/le-max-2/development/recovery-twrp-3-1-0-0-t3593942)
When i booted into that TWRP i pressed cancel again on the decryption thingie, and when i pressed install it showed me my internal storage!
Don't know how this works, but hope it helps
Good luck!
If you use EUI 5.6, yo can wipe data partition as ext4 instead of emmc at TWRP and reboot. EUI will initialize sytem as non encrypted. But this method don't work for EUI 5.8 and EUI 5.9. If some one know a good way to keep data partition as ext4 instead of emmc, we will solve the problem.
