Hi,
I've just bought an unlocked Orange-branded Hero which has 1.5 installed. I need VPN in order to access mail and calendar at work (which I did quite successfully with my Touch Pro 2) but I see that there is no native VPN option on the Hero menu. I understand that v1.6 software onwards has this option but as a complete novice to Android I'm not sure where to go from here.
As an aside, if I download the latest Orange software upgrade form the HTC site will the phone become locked again?
Apologies if I'm repeating previously answered questions but I can't find answers to these questions after an hour's searching.
Thanks for any help.
firstly the sim lock and the phones os are totally seperate so once unlocked you wont be able to relock without a HTC service centres touch.
VPN wise, the market has a few different option, you will need a rooted rom on most, have you thought about installing a rooted 1.5 rom, or if you can hold on the 2.1 offical rom will be out within the next month (if they dont put it back)
If you put the latest orange rom on it may hamper rooting, so you are best installing a customer recovery image that sits at the very beginning of your phones rom, this allows easy installing of new roms that are signed zip files.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the reply, very useful.
I did try and install a 1.6 ROM last night after following the novice guide on one of the other forums, but I had to downgrade the existing ROM first. Unfortunately I got a 171 USB connection error (even though the sync works fine) with a bootloader timeout message.
Not sure where I go from here as I doubt whether I will be able to upload 2.1 when that is released without this problem being resolved.

HI!
I recently got an HTC Hero (Orange branded) which, to be honest, is more than a little frustrating after the joys of the Touch Diamond. Anyway, I rooted the phone when I got it (with instrustions and software from theunlockr.com) which improved things slightly.
Orange have finally released their official ROM update which I have installed with no problems (can be found at http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=675&news_id=261), and this has drastically improved the phone’s performance if anyone else was wondering.
My question is, will my phone still be rooted or will I need to do that again, and if so, do I do it in the same way as before? And will the ROM update still be inplace or will it have reverted to the factory default? Any help would be gratefully received. Am fairly ok at windows mobile modification, but when it comes to Android, I’m afraid I’m still quite in the dark!
Thanks very much!
Ben
If you installed a official update in RUU format from Orange then you'll be back to a standard, unrooted phone. What's worse you won't be able to use 'fastboot' to root the phone or reinstall the custom recovery image.
There is a solution though, see here: http://android.modaco.com/content/h...u-flashed-the-2-73-ruu-and-got-the-new-hboot/
Thanks for this Dr Hotdog. I will try this later!
i read somewhere that the new 1.6 sdk can actually fastboot the new hboot, i may be wrong though.
Hi
I have just recieved a new HTC Hero on contract with 3. I am relatively new to ROMs and radios etc. I just had a few questions with regards to the hero ?
I only have an internet allowance of 512mb, will this be enough for the phone ? Are there any free programs which can track this ?
I want to change to the latest 2.1 Rom but I am unsure if this ROM is faster than the current 1.5 ROM. What would you recommend is the fastest and most stable 2.1 ROM for the hero ?
Does the 2.1 ROM use more battery power than the 1.5 ROM ?
If I were to change the ROM would I be able to make a backup of the "out fo the box" ROM. I know I have a lot of questions and most likely a few more to follow but any feedback is appreciated.

Riyaz

OK. 2.1 ROMs are miles better
Battery life should be a bit better. You make a nandroid backup if you want to store your current config.
There are apps to track data usage in the market (free). Droidwall (on custom ROM) will let you control what apps get internet access.
If you ever needed to restore to box condition, you could run your nandroid restore, or just use a goldcard and 3 UK RUU
HTH
512 meg will usually be enough provided you dont sit there on youtube all month, or use tethering and download substantial amounts. Make sure it connects to Wifi when it can. I have 500mb and while it seems little I've never had a problem.
I rooted a 3 uk hero the other day. Massive issues with it. I was on 2.73.771.73 or something and I had to make a goldcard, then downgrade to something else, then install flashrec, then flash a new recovery then flash a rom. Horrible to find the drivers etc needed to downgrade though. I needed to change them to "My HTC" drivers for HTC Sync and bootloader. Using 64 bit win 7 by the way.
I appreciate the feedback guys. I have done some more reading and I think I want to install VillainROM 12. Just a few more questions before I attempt to have a go !
Is the goldcard method the best way to root the hero ?
Once it is rooted, would it be relatively easy to return to the original 3 uk rom ? (How would I create a backup of this ?)
To install this ROM am I correct in assuming I would need to root the phone. As my phone is on the 3 UK network, it is running android 1.5. I am unsure of which radio is installed, and hence would you recommend updating the radio to:
"update-hero-radio-63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14-signed.zip" ? (I think this is the most up to date radio for the hero).
I know some of these questions are probably common knowledge but I am new to this so please bear with me.

I've rooted my hero on 3. i'm using that radio and VR12.
First off, I used a goldcard to to downgrade then flash the recovery then you can do what you like. Ive not tried going back to stock though.
Good luck.

Just wondering is VR12 a quick ROM or is superhero 2.0 quicker ?
hi
cuurent rom is better . wait for new upgrade to froyo 2.2 . otherwise you can do cutom rom
thanks
Thank you very much for the support guys. I have done a bit more reading and I think I have it figured out but before I start just wanted to confirm the process in case I miss something out or the order is incorrect. This is the process I plan on using:
1. Backup the phone using nandroid and save folder on to PC
2. Goldcard procedure. Setup SDK, create the goldcard.
3. Downgrade using this goldcard to 2.73.405.5
4. Install AmonRa's (v1.6.2) Hero recovery image (Am I correct in thinking there is a new recovery image out ? Which one should I use ?)
5. Load VR12 and reboot
6. Update the radio to 63.18.55.06PU_6.35.15.14. This bit scares me as I think this may potentially brick the handset !
7. Reboot phone and hopefully should have rooted hero with VR12 and latest radio.
Is this order correct ? Any tips ?
I will be using Windows 7 32 bit, do I need to install any extra driver's ?
Many thanks
Riyaz
You have it summed up correctly (assuming you're currently running v1.5 of android).
To answer a few of your questions/worries
Yes there is a new version of AmonRA's recovery. May as well use it. Seems fine to me. v1.7.0.1 (i think)
The radio will be fine. It's only an issue if you pull the battery whilst its going (user error) or you have a sprint cdma hero (user error).
Tips - install the latest version of HTC Sync v3.0.5387 from here first. This will ensure the correct drivers are installed. If you get an error whilst downgrading just update the drivers in windows to those installed with HTC Sync (HTC folder on C drive) and run the update again and all will work. That is perfectly normal and happens to some (probably most) users.
Enjoy.
Hi
I installed the HTC Sync in that link but when I try to connect it says this software is only for devices which are running 2.1.
Any ideas ? I cannot set-up ADB without syncing the phone. I hate windows 7 !
Doesn't matter - just need the drivers. Nothing else
Thanks I will continue tonight. Just another question about backing up the original rom on the phone. Am I correct in assuming I need to switch the phone off, turn back on and hold power button and home key and it boots into recovery mode I think. I do not see an option to create a backup. I do however get a cache error. Any idea's ? Am I doing something wrong ? Can I create a backup image via this method ?
Any idea's ?
Apprecuate the feedback guys.
You haven't got a custom recovery image on the phone yet. What part of the process are you trying to do?
Hi
Sorry I just re read my post and it is not very clear. I am referring to the first step of making a backup. If i want to make a backup of the original ROM on the phone (the three ROM), how would I go about making a full backup incase anything goes wrong whilst I am trying to root the phone ? What I am trying to say is I want to have abackup incase I get it wrong whilst rooting.
Apologies for the questions.
You'll have to read up on that. I don't think there is an easy to follow guide. Check out the nandroid details with a quick google search. Personally i've never bothered with this part of the process because as long as there is a 3 network rru exe file (check htc's website) then you can always go back (obviously losing your personal settings). When you run the rru it removes everything you have done and sets the phone back to the state it arrived in.
If you do do it then please make a simple to follow guide for others.
Am I correct in thinking that if anything were to go wrong during the rooting process, I can still restore the phone via a 3 network rru exe file (all be it loosing my settings). Just in case I do make a mistake, how would I go about restoring the phone ? Would I simply place the RUU file on an SD card and then run the RUU file ? How would I run the RUU file ?
I have looked on the HTC website and cannot seem to find this RUU file for a hero on the 3 network. Does anyone have this RUU file and would they be kind enough to forward it on to me or a link to the RUU ?
Thank you guys for being so patient. I know I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer !
http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=840
That should be the 3UK rru file. I would recommend keeping a copy just in case. You just run the file from any windows PC and it will do its stuff.
You are correct in your deductions and sharp enough
Hi
Just an update guys, I have managed to create a goldcard but I cannot get HTC sync to work with Windows 7. I tried to follow the advice provided but it just states Windows has picked the best driver for this. I am tearing my hair out !
Any ideas on how to sync htc hero running 1.5 cupcake with windows 7 ultimate ?
Regards
Which version of HTC Sync are you running?
Hey all,
I have a Hero on 3 UK network and since the stupid network dont seem to be releasing any updates for it, I want to root it and manually put 2.1/2.2 on there.
Problem is, NONE of the guides on how to flash it work.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Goldcard method - I have succesfully created a goldcard using a Kingston 1GB card (tested on a Desire and works). Trying to downgrade to the stock HTC ROM using HTC's RUU gives me error 140 (bootloader version error).
Rooting the phone - Phone is all hooked up to ADB, can poll it for information etc. Tried to boot it into a recovery image but get an error saying the following: "downloading 'boot.img'... FAILED (remote: not allow)"
Alternate rooting method - So I found out ROM version 2.73 or whatever it is has some kind of extra security on it. The guides are advising me to download flashrec.apk and install on phone to backup then flash the recovery sector of the phone. This doesnt work. I can neither backup nor apply the recovery images. Even if I override the backup part, it still wont work Just gives me yet another error.
Seems that my Hero is locked down with some impossible to break security. Anyone else having the same difficulty with Three UK? If so are there any other ways you guys may have come up with to root/flash your phone? I'm getting really pissed off with it and am probably going to do an insurance job on it if I cant flash it.
FYI, this phone has not been updated since August 2009. Everything on it is stock from Three UK.
Versions (if you think it's useful):
Firmware: 1.5
Build: 2.73.771.62
Baseband (radio): 63.18.55.06IU_6.35.08.22
Kernel: 2.6.27-430d1aea
Any help I shall be most grateful for!!
Follow my newbie guide. Should talk you through it step by step.
The bootloader error is probably a driver thing. Update your HTC Sync and it should update the drivers.
Sorry, just noticed the thread got moved, my mistake.
Anyone able to shed any more light on it?
I followed the noobie guide and it didnt work. I have the latest version of HTC Sync installed.
Insurance job looking more likely.
Still with error 140? Did you update the driver in fastboot / bootloader mode?
Alternatively try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726118

Which one is your noobie thread mate? I followed several threads off this forum all claiming to be noobie. TBH, they were all pretty straight forward enough, and worked when I helped my mate flash his Desire.
Min can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253 (it's also in my signature )
Ok yeah, I'll just go over the points in your guide then explain how it failed...
Using Flashrec to backup and apply a recovery image...
Flashrec simply doesnt work on my phone (have tried about 3 different versions, including the very latest which is 1.13). No functions work. Cant even use the bypass backup button (hidden button to the right of backup button). That section ended there for me.
Goldcard method...
No matter what RUU I try to downgrade to, it does not work. Keep getting error 140 (incorrect bootloader version). The goldcard I made definitely works as we used the same one to downgrade my mates Desire today.
I found some other guides, which looked like they might help as they go a bit further, but ultimately every time I try and actually do something, it gets blocked, access denied or some other error.
Flashrec won't work if you're on the wrong version of android (i.e. not downgraded using goldcard).
Goldcard is fine it is most likely your drivers in your bootloader mode that are wrong - check them first.
Drivers were ok. I managed to downgrade using a newer version of the stock HTC ROM after scouring these forums for hours.
So in short... ALL GOOD.
Only problem I have now is that there is no manual update option on eclair (1.5). The 2.1 FOTA updates attempted to download before I setup the WiFi and now it wont come back.
If you want to stay official then you can put the month forward a few and the update should show up again.
Surely the point of this was to get root and a custom rom though no?
The point was actually to get Droid 2.1 'cos 3Uk are dragging their heels big time, but now opens up the options of loading custom ROM's.
TBH I'm happy just to have 2.1. Eclair was doing my head in with all its bugs.
Thanks for the tip with the date - it worked!
i wounder if you did it or not ? cuz o have the same demmn problem with my hero G2 touch t-mobile nothing work for me i try all methods i think last solution is to bring a big hummer and break it as i like (
Fellow 3 UK Hero Owner
I'd just like to add how angry I was when the 2.1 update failed to show up. The Goldcard method worked perfectly for me, then I looked at custom ROMs. I currently run Gingerbread and I have to say, not only is it SUPER fast and smooth but its way less buggy than the stock Hero ROMs.
I'm with the Cronos crew. To get the latest ROM, search for cronosproject (.org) and click forums. (cant post link because i haven't posted 8 times )
Seriously, you wont regret it
best way to fix this is...... make sure u have a file manager, download universal androot to your computer and then to your phone install through file manger and root phone then once rooted install rec image with rom manager from market.....there you go its rooted now follow my guide to flash custom roms properly and to root phones....
mayb its ur android version
may i please know it i can surely help you
Howdies all!
So I'm a total newbie to Android (my first smartphone, in fact) and have only ever had to deal with an iTouch; as such I'm having a few problems trying to root my HOX+, though they're mostly due to indecision.
I was wondering if it would be possible to root my stock ROM and keep that ROM installed, and still be able to use my phone normally (with the bootloader unlocked I'm stuck in Airplane Mode, and with it relocked I get stuck in a bootloop)?
I've been able to back up my original ROM - version 1.17.206.1 (O2 UK), and I have SuperSU installed. Would the correct course of action here be to simply relock the bootloader and flash the ROM, or is it not possible to keep the stock ROM on a rooted phone? If I've got the steps wrong, could someone please notify me of the correct procedure, if it is at all possible?
Though before I'm asked - I'm sticking with the stock ROM as it's what I'm currently comfortable with - the custom ROMs I've looked at feel a bit too buggy for me (being new to this and all).
I will also upload my stock ROM backup to a file share site if anybody requires it (I've seen a few threads asking, though I'm unsure if those issues were ever resolved).
Thanks for your time.
EDIT: I feel I may have put this thread in the wrong forum, my apologies if this is the case.
Hello everyone,
Here is my story and the reason I am posting looking for someone with enough patience to help me.
I live in the UK and last week I purchased an HTC ONE XL on Ebay, I didn't realize that the phone was being shipped from Hong Kong.. When the phone arrived It had installed Android Ice Cream Sandwich, so far so good....
The first thing I did when I received the phone was to try and update the Android software through Software update.. and here is when my problems started.. It turned out that the recovery software of the phone had been replaced with CWM and hence I am unable to actually update the firmware as every time I do so the system boots into recovery mode and it doesn't allow me to run the ZIP file.
Doing a bit more research I found out that in theory using the correct RUU I should be able to stock/unroot my phone and then be able to install the original software again and be able to update my phone.. Unfortunately the CID of my phone has been changed to CID:11111111 and so far I have not been able to find the correct RUU for it.
After a few days of research I learned how to install custom ROMs and I am running now CyanogenMod 10.0 Stable release with gapps installed as well.
Now here comes the question and hopefully someone with more experience in the Android field might be able to help me out.. Is there any chance of finding out the correct model of hardware so that I can then find the correct RUU for my phone? When I tried to update my phone using OTA the phone got this OTA package downloaded: OTA_EVITA_UL_JB_45_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_3.17.707.1_0.23a.32.09.29_10.128.32.34a_release_299070u0mcx8aiaku8jgn4, would this be of any help in order to identify the correct RUU for my phone?
I have been searching around the internet since I got the phone and doing loads of research but unfortunately despite the fact that I learned how to use Fastboot to flash the ROM, recovery image etc.. I have not been able to find this piece of information which should allow me to restore my phone back to default...
Some of you might be wondering why would I want to restore my phone back to the factory settings since CyanogenMod is really cool and boot much faster... yes you are right, I love CyanogenMod but I am having a bit of an issue with the text and icons in my Android device.. basically the text looks a bit strange and some letters do not seem to display correctly as they have funny shapes.. also the buttons appear with lines on them... so this made me think that the wrong firmware might have been installed and that due to this my phone could having issues with the display... not sure if that might be the cause...
If you guys could maybe provide some help with this or maybe point me to a threat that would help me find out how to identify my RUU that would be fantastic... I have been looking into XDA forums for a few days and although I found lots of very useful info I haven't been able to figure out how to match/find the correct RUU for my device since my CID has been changed as I already mentioned...
Thanks in advance
