How to root 2.73.405.38 ?! - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have 2.73.405.38 WWE ROM on my HTC Hero(unlocked, gsm), how can I root it? Did a lot of google, none of the methods I found work, with errors like "FAILED (remote: not allow)" or "Backup FAILED: Could not run command.". Ideas?
Thank you!

Follow my guide and try the gold card method.

Ok, I did goldcard, downgraded to 405.05, did flashrec and RA-1.6.2, downloaded villain4beta2 ROM. In ROM there are 3 folders and boot.img file, uploaded to SD card, renamed the boot.img to update.zip, doing the home+power button, did all the wipes, and then when i try to 'flash zip from sdcard' it comes out with error "Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad), Installation aborted." Why?

don't extract the zip!! Copy it to the SD-Card and flash it....

You don't need to extract anything, just copy the zip file to the sdcard and flash it.

it worked! thank you guys

unable to reload modaco rom

hi,
i managed to create the gold card, root my htc hero and install modaco's rom but i selected the one with chinese input but it is not the chinese input which i wanted,
i tried to put the modaco rom in my sd card and rename it as update,
then boot into recovery mode, and when i click apply update.zip,
error message pop up then there is the ( bad )
it was able to open and extract then the 3rd line, it stopped,
i tried another sd card, but still get the same error message,
can anyone advise what i should do ?
i tried to wipe but still cannot,
please help
i tried to go to settings, then sd card unmount, and tried to format it, no response,
when i tried to apply update.zip
message show :
install from sdcard
finding update package
opening update package
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad)
installation aborted
try re-downloading it, might just be a corrupt zip also avoid multi segment download management if downloading zips.
thanks,
i noticed that the file was only 3mb, i downloaded last night and re-installed it and it works,
sorry for causing inconvenience to all

[Q] Flashing Rom, No signature error

Im downloading the rom, right clicking it, then zipping. I then used adb to push the rom onto my sdcard. I do the wipe but when i flash my rom it tells me.....
E:No Signature (1444)
E: No verification
Any ideas? Im also using a mac if that makes a difference
If you download the rom you don't need to zip or unzip it. Just put it straight on the SD.
You're removing the "signature" that emulates HTC's rom.

Nooby question.

I successfully flashed (cm6) for the first time and got everything working correctly but I can't seem to find the Android Market. Now from what I read I need to install the gapps file. I found it downloaded it straight on the phone. Am at the clockworkmod recovery, but.....how do I install it?
install zip from sd card?
Wont that mess up the ROM
sorry im fairly new to all this.
From Clockwork choose - install zip from sdcard, then - choose zip from sdcard, then browse to where you saved the gapps file and select it. It won't mess up your ROM.

Ok I did it but there was a problem.
it says
--Installing: SD CARD:download/gapps-mdpi-20101020-signed.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installing Google Apps...
Installation Complete!
E:Error in /sdcard/download/gapps-mdpi-20101020-signed.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
and then it froze at that.. /:
EDIT:::::
Disregard, I rebooted and redid the process and it worked out, thanks for the help!

Yes you install the gapps.zip file from Clockworkmod recovery by selecting install zip from sd card. You need to install it from ClockworkMod because all of these Google Apps will be installed in the /apps directory. No this won't mess up the ROM because the structure of the zip file determines what gets written to the various partitions on the phone. The gapps.zip file contains files that will be written to the /apps directory. A ROM zip file will typically have *.img files in it like boot.img as well as files for the /apps directory.
This was a bug in rom manager with gapps. You followed the procedure correctly fyi.

Alright great. Yeah like I said after that weird error message all I did was restart the phone go back into clockwork and install the zip again and there was no error this time around so now I have all the Google Apps. Thanks to everyone for the help.

get the update.zip from there ??
either get rom manager and flash clockwork then go to recovery and reinstall packages twice or get the update.zip from the link above and reinstall packages twice and that'll take you to clockwork recovery
you sound like you have stock froyo - which means you have the 3E stock recovery.
I suggest following my guide (signature - noobs).
EDIT - ha, just realize Kyle already linked to it, thanks man.

Short way: Try TWRP.
Longer way: uzip the rom, open META-INF/com/google/android directory. You will find a file "updater-script" . Rename that to "updater-script.txt"
With any of your favorite text editor delete line starting with “assert” to next semicolon. Most probably you'll find it at the top.
Save file. Rename back to updater-script. Replace from original. Rezip. And flash.
If none of this work may be you have tried experimenting with partitions.
In that case you need to repartition.
