htc hero on fido EDGE or 3G?? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a European HTC Hero and it's on petro canada but I want a plan so i'm going with fido and i wondering if my hero would be on EDGE or 3G on Fido??

Petro Canada has their own mobile service?? (For any non-Canadians, as you can probably guess, Petro Canada is a gas station.) That blows my mind.
But anyway... you should be on HSPA (aka 3G+, as opposed to regular 3G.) Fido is the same network as Rogers, so maybe a Rogers customer can confirm this.

lol ya petro canada has a mobile service but it's only per paid and it sucks on the Hero!!
ok thanks man

Startrek on *new* HSPA Bell Mobility network

As I’m sure most of us already know Bell and Telus (formerly CDMA-only carriers in Canada) have launched a new HSPA network. Both the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS now work on the new network.
I understand that HSPA is a GSM based technology. Bell is now issuing SIM cards with new activations. I was wondering if anyone would know if the HTC StarTrek (specifically the Cingular 3125) can be made to work with this network. I am willing to do firmware updates obviously.
Best regards,
The Fish
If you mean 3G/3.5G then yes and then again no. If its like the networks in the UK then the StarTrek will work on the GSM portion of the Bell network, but as I dont think it has a 3G chipset it will not be able to access 3G/3.5G services.
I may of course be wrong but that is my understanding of the situation.

European HERO vs American

I currently have a telus HTC HERO in black but i am selling that one and buying a white HTC HERO.
The white HERO that im looking to buy is a european model.
I looked at the HTC website to see if there was any difference between the two phones and i found this:
HSDPA/WCDMA: 900/2100 MHz for Europe and 850/1900 MHz for USA.
So my question is will the european HERO work on canadian networks providers (FIDO, ROGERS)....would i have any issues with getting good signal connections and optimal speeds for 3G
thanks in advance
The Canadian GSM networks & AT&T in the US use a different 3G frequency than what GSM networks use in Europe & T-Mobile in the US. Due to this an European Hero on a Canadian network will not get 3G.
thank you for the quick reply.
I guess i will have to look for another seller.
Thanks again
Further, In Canada, networks like Bell and Telus are ONLY 3G, so without the North American 3G bands, you won't get any signal. I think Rogers has 2G, though. I'm not sure exactly which networks do and don't, but I know that at least some don't.

Umm, no....
As far as I know, the Bell and Telus joint network is 3G only. I don't know if the carriers have a deal to use EDGE from Rogers or areas not covered by 3G.
To the OP: Why don't you get a Hero from Telus? It's the same one as the European version, but works on the North American 3G band.

I dont like going on 3 year contracts so i buy my phones from resellers on craigslist. The seller specified that his HERO was from Europe so i wanted to find out if it would work. That was the only option at the moment but now I do have a Telus HERO that I bought from some other seller.
Thanks for the help btw.

[Q] T-mobile blocked Canadian netowrks?

So i got a tmobile Samsung Galaxy s Vibrant right. and i live up in canada the phone is unlocked and everything but i cant connect to 3G data... i keep hearing thins around the web of people saying tmobile has Blocked the frequency of 3G Data in canada. is that possible? or just a rumor? cause i would just LOVE to use this phone to its potentional not just talk and text....
Only Wind and Mobilicity are gonna work. I'm from Toronto though don't know what else is available Canada wide. All others you are gonna need either the i9000 or the captivate for bell and rogers
3g worked up in canada with a rogers network SIM for me. That was about a month ago. I'm going up Thursday will let you know. Typically I travel to Vancouver weekly and swap my tmobile sim for a rogers.
Well i have a rogers sim car with an unlocked Tmobile vibrant. so i dont get it... it works for some but not for others?
Still works for me. In Richmond BC right now on rogers sim speedtest results 3617up 478dn

[Q] Best Canadian Data providers, plans and prices for SGS2

Just got my shiny SGS2 and wonder - what is the best data plan price could be in Ontario (Toronto particularly).
Got my phone from Virgin Mobile unlock and connected to Fido.
A friend of mine told me that Wind has the best price - $10 a month for unlimited data (only throttling the channel after first 5Gb). Went to Wind booth and asked to put Wind demo SIM card into my Samsung. No luck, the phone can see the Wind Home Network but couldn't connect to it.
Fido has regular data plan $60 a month for 5Gb that is kinda expensive.
Found in Internet that Fido has retention plan $30 for 6Gb. Called the support but they told me - this is only if I buy new smartphone from them sign for 3 years contract, otherwise - no $30 for 6Gb even when I threatened that I would cancel and go to different provider.
Any thoughts about cheap data plans in Canada, Ontario, Toronto that DO work with Samsung Galaxy S2?
I would've stuck with Virgin as they currently have a limited time offer of 6GB data for $30 and they're plan offerings aren't bad at all if you don't have the luxury of a retention offer from your current provider.
I have accounts on three different carriers for me and my siblings and here's how they compare:
Brother's on Fido:
100/Unl.E/WE starting 7pm
Unl. txt msg
Call Display w/Name Display
Canadian LD Option 25 Minutes
6GB Data
=$75 after taxes
Sister's on Virgin:
200/Unl.E/WE starting 6pm
Unl. txt&pic msg
Fav 10 Canada-wide
Call Display w/Name Display
1GB Data
=$70 after taxes
Mine on Bell:
150/Unl.E/WE starting 6pm
Unl. txt&pic msg
Fab 10 Canada-wide
Call Display & Voice Mail
6GB Data
=$87 after taxes
Wow, holy expensive plans, batman.
30-45$ (Plus tax) here for:
300 minutes
unlimited fido to fido
Evenings and weekends at 6
2500 SMS/100 MMS
Voicemail + Call display
Evolutive data plan (100 megs, 10$, 500 megs, 20$, 1GB, 25$)
(Telus corporate plan + Retention = Win)
Do people really need 6GB? Retention works only if you've been with a carrier for a long time... Going on 6 years with fido, I'm sure if I call them they'll give me something free. haha
Wait until the iphone 5 is released... When it is, they'll have 6GB data plans for 30$... Virgin though seems to have a pretty good network. Fido/Rogers, not so sure anymore...

Been with Fido for 7 years now without interruption.
Call them today and they haven't given me the retention plan.
Not unless I bought a phone from them (I just got my SGS2 ha-ha, what Fido can offer me instead?), sign a contract for 3 years and other crappy terms...
Man, I am disapoint with Fido.
^ Strange, I got the 6GB/$30 retention plan by committing to 2 years of Data (eg an ECF is < 2yrs) without any hardware (I am using an unlocked SGS II from Europe now).
Unlocked SGS2 will only work on Rogers, Bell and Telus (and their sub-brands, Fido, Virgin, etc.) because SGS2 supports 1900/2100 MHz HSPA.
Wind and Mobilicity use 1700 MHz (AWS) HSPA frequency for their network, which the global version of the SGS2 does not support. You will have to wait for the T-Mobile USA version.
On the other hand, the unlocked global version of HTC Sensation will work on Wind and Mobilicity, but not on Bell or Telus, and only at EDGE speeds on Rogers network.
If you use the SGS2 on Wind network, it will probably roam on the Rogers/Bell/Telus network (whichever they have roaming partnership with) (Wind Away zone). Not sure though.

Is this "T-Mobile version" has different chip and some kind of different hardware or it will be just another ROM, software update etc.?
I mean can we theoretically reprogram Bell SGS2 to work with Wind or this is hardware issue?
It's a hardware thing. The T-Mobile/AWS version will use a different cellular baseband radio chip and antenna. It's kind of like the iPhone - you get 3G on Rogers/Fido/Bell/Telus/AT&T, but only EDGE on Wind/Mobilicity/T-Mobile - because the iPhone cellular baseband radio does not support AWS frequencies.

I manage a multi-carrier wireless store (Rogers, Fido, Bell, Virgin, etc) and suggest you call Fido back and talk to the cancellations department (also called customer retention). Tell them you are going to switch to Virgin because they will give you a better plan without contract. Speaking from experience, they can give you a plan with promotional discounts even without having to sign a contract.
If that doesn't work, PM me and I'll actually switch you to something better. Like Virgin for $75 (Unlimited Talk and Text, 6GB Data, Caller ID, Voicemail), no contract.

[Q] Bought a 3vo Sprint CDMA. Question on activating

I bought this phone on ebay from Buffalo, NY and I live in Ontario, Canada. Since Sprint Canada was acquired by Rogers in 2005 according to wikipedia, can the phone be activated with Rogers telocommunication, or any carrier?
Also, does this page have any relevance to what I'm talking about?
