I originally posted this in ROM development then realized I have a CDMA version of the phone.
Like most I dont like the stock ROM. The only one I have tried so far is KK's Loaded 2.0. I like it a lot but it lacks in some areas. Mainly I like how in landscape it gives me the normal home screen. Where it lacks is that the battery life is horrible, I can barely go 12 hours on a full charge, and it is sluggish going from portrait to landscape.
The only real functions I use on the phone is text messaging, email through outlook, the Google Maps GPS and the internet to check facebook and google stuff. What im looking for is the ROM that will give me the best battery life and usability for the above functions. I would like to have the normal home screen in landscape and a faster response from portrait to landscape. I rarely use any of the microsoft office programs, I dont play any games on the phone, nothing along those lines, I literally just do the things mentioned above.
So for the people that have tried and tested the various ROMs, which one do you think is best for me? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
Ive just started flashing by phone and as a result, ive flashed many roms lately looking for the perfect one. Here are two of them that i feel are the best ive tried.
If you want a 6.1 rom with great battery life and alot of space for extra programs, try Mighty Rom 4.16. The great part about it is that the phone starts up quickly (almost as fast as a regular non-smartphone), the switch in screen orientation is nearly instant, and it doesn't have a bunch of extra programs on it that you may not use. The only little thing i didn't like was that it didn't include picture messaging and text messages were limited to only 120 words, rather than the 160 i was used to. Luckily, these problems were easily fixed by installing Arcsoft mms and an sms fix. Only reason i switched to a different one was because i wanted wm6.5.
If you want to take the jump to 6.5, i suggest that you check out StarROM 2.0. It's by far one of the quickest roms that i have ever used, it has great battery life (i dont need to charge my phone every single day now!), and already includes programs like Google Maps, Facebook, Opera Widgets, and the usual wm programs (outlook email, office etc.). Im currently using it on my touch pro right now and the only things that i didnt like were that i had to install the calculator, Opera, and Arcsoft MMS. I am currently using it right now and havent had any trouble ever since.
These are just roms that ive tried and liked but to find the one thats best for you, you should try some more until you find the one you're most comfortable with
Star 2.0 is what i would suggest atm.
Silence & SsS are also good roms.
Just switched to StarROM 2.0.... so far so good, will try it out for a while.... Should I change the radio on the phone? I have only had 1 other ROM besides the stock one so I am guessing that the radio on the phone is the stock one. Someone suggested that maybe my poor battery life could be a result of the wrong radio on the phone.
There all good! just try them and see what fits you best

agree with this completely. besides it fun trying new stuff
If you want WM 6.5 with Rhodium Manila and some added Topaz goodies, I've tried most of the WM 6.5 + Rhodium Manila ROMs and personally find Energy ROM 3.0 to be the best.

so what is your input? did you find it more battery saving or not? let us know.
I'm new to flashing and really want to flash to 6.5. I saw the review on PocketNow and wanted it right away.
However, I'm having trouble deciding what ROM to get. The hardest part is figuring out which WM 6.5 build is the latest. The numbers don't seem to go in order.
Has anyone the Sprint Optimized ROM in this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509544
I'm looking for a Sprint optimized as my priority because I worry I won't be able to find cabs for the apps that came with the phone.

I've gone through the majority of the 6.5 roms and HANDS DOWN...Energy ROM 3.0 is the best.
I got rid of my wife's Herman, but Fallen 2.1 was pretty good, light, fast, and relatively good with battery. Other good ones are Mighty's roms, and I recently found out that NRGZ has developed a few roms for the Herman as well.
Like a few people said earlier in the thread, it is fun to try different roms to see which one fits you best. Try them for a while and then switch to the next until you feel comfy enough to stop flashing your device (or until you brick it )
Hope this helps.
I'm in the same boat as the OP and currently looking for the best ROM for my Touch Pro.
My phone came preflashed with Juicy 7 when I purchased it and found it uncomfortably slow - not to mention that it has crashed several times on me and then on reboot - proceeded to reset the device and wipe out everything.
I'd like hear, aside from what's the best, why each ROM is the best. I'm looking for a fast ROM that has good battery life (and stable).

Hi!
I still have the stock-ROM on my TouchPro. There is a ROM-Update on the
HTC-website from the 2009-08-30. Is it already WM6.5 or just a different
update? If, what is the favorised custom ROM?
actual ROM:
ROM-Version: 1.90.407.4 GER
ROM-Date: 08/23/08
modem: 1.02.25.19
protocoll: 52.33.25.17U
Any help, please? :}
To be honest, I've tried in the last year almost all ROM's posted in this Raphael Forum.
My advise, if you need and use the PDA for normal business use stick with the Stock ROM, or upgrade to the latest 'official' posted in XDA-Wiki. If you don't mind your phone crashing or failing then try and 'play' with the ROM's available.
You and Chefs don't get me wrong, but the 6.5 and especially the Sense versions are far to unstable, though it shows what could be possible on these PDA's.
That doesn't sound really promising... hm.
The custom ROMs for the HTC TyTN did work good. Pity.
I'm curious for the 6.5-GUI, though.
At the moment I'm using the Iphone more often since I got
"tethering" working without the need of paying for it and
specially because the TouchPro-headset broke... Not
really a cheap replacement for it. The China-plagiats
suck... sound like crap.
personally the custom roms have worked great for me and are in general faster than the stock rom. unless u go sense or manila 2.5 whatever u want to call it, they are pretty stable too.
read the instructions on how to load the rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=448008
only thing i dont like about the guide, is the hard reset at stylus settings, because that prevents the rom from loading its software if it needs any. i just let it load whatever it wants.
and then try out TAEL
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561158
or
Energy
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=536751
both of these are my personal favorites and run like a charm. with a stock rom, the touch pro is a waste of hardware.

I agree. The best thing you can do is to try a 6.5 21864 build. Those are stable and energyRoms are fast.
I use my phone for business. I have been using energy ROM's right from the time i got my touch pro.
i started with the roms from monx, after he stopped for a while, i used energyrom for a long time, and tried some other, but always came back to energy.
Well monx posted a couple of weeks ago a new 6.5 rom and i am using that rom, i always liked his roms.
and there is no official htc WM6.5 rom for the touch pro
just try some for yourself is my advice
I started off with RRE's ROMs but moved to Energy ROM's and have been very happy with both. If you stick to the more stable ones vs the beta ROMs then you'll be fine. I'm still running an Energy ROM from August but am finally gonna upgrade to the latest one.

You should try the Stock ROM update on HTC ( and for the question NO OFFICIAL HTC TOUCH PRO updates have 6.5 they are all 6.1 )
You can flash the TAEL or the ENERGY or the CHROME or the EXQUISITE ROMs they are all very popular and mostly good.
You should just try one of them it just takes 15 to flash a ROM.
Read and follow the steps very carefully.
And remember you can always flash back to HTC STOCKs.
Usually the one on HTC site are more latest than the ones on WIKI.
Enjoy !
But you should have posted this in Raphael Questions and Answers thread not a new thread.
Next time be careful.
I went around flashing roms myself, always landed back on the latest stock rom because it works. I'll list the advantages and disadvantages I stumbled upon from my experiences.
Stock Rom
Advantages
- You know it will work right (for the most part).
- Peace of mind with the ROM
- Still customizable (I was able to install Manila 2.1 and it works very smoothly, the only problem I had was with Tachi dialer, which didn't work 100% on any rom I tried it on either (some bugs, like when I dialed a number it never showed the correct number on the screen, but it did dial the right contact number)).
Disadvantages
- You miss out on a lot of new things like, Manila 2.5, Ezinput 2, etc.
- Lack of support for 6.1 on XDA these days. I'm still having trouble finding 6.1 themes and Manila themes on here. Seems that has died down with the flood of Manila 2.1.
- It's still 6.1.
Cooked Roms
Advantages
- You get all the newest things; WinMo 6.5 + it's uh... more touch friendliness, Manila 2.5, etc.
- Tons of support on XDA these days.
Disadvantages
- Many bugs. Yes it they do work for the most part, but look at any cooked rom thread, and see how many people are posting problems, and look at how many updates are down to fix problems. Which brings me to my next point....
- You get into a flashing frenzy. You end up flashing more than using the roms you flash because of updates, and different rom offers.
- You're never sure what the experience is going to be on your phone till you try, so no real piece of mind. Some roms take a few days to really show that it might not be compatible with you, then you'll end up spending a ton of time finding another rom to try out.
- Never satisfied (ties in with flashing frenzy).
That's how it was for me. I toyed around with the stock Fuze rom, got it working to a point where I like it very much. I got Manila all nice using custimizer and some other mods. But really, I'm always tempted to flash to try out things like 2.5, because I want that Twitter Tab, or I want GPS weather of 2.1 (oh how I wish Tachi dialer just worked perfectly). But in the end I always go back to using the stock rom, because it just works well.

Just a correction
The manila 2.1 or 2.5 DO NOT use GPS to find out weather on the current loaction they use location service which tracks down the area were the tower is located from where your phone is getting signals.
And PLEASE DO NOT say that all Custom ROMs have many bugs You have to chose the right build the right developer and the right ammount of things you do with it.
I can point out so many bugs present in stock ROM and the lack of things you can do.
And we all know that installing CABs for MODs and TWEAKS is nothing close to the performance they give when baked into the ROM.
They eat so much more CPU and Memory when installed separately !
Anyways OP its your choice but you should give it a try atleast
I require my phone for work and have found many of the cooked ROMs far MORE stable than the stock ones. The t-mobile (uk) stock ROM was awful. And I mean truly awful !!!
I use NRG ROMS. Ive not risked the Manilla 2.5 versions as yet (which NRG himself describes as beta !) but his other WM 6.5 are excellent.
I also use SPB mobile shell 3.5 which i think is great. sits over WM 6.5 very nicely and is fully customisable - especially with MSkips extras.
Just to reiterate what some of the other posters have said - the cooks here do a great deal of hard work - if you pick a ROM thats close to the cutting edge you may get bugs (and the chefs will warn you that) - but if you pick some of the more tried and tested branches the cooks have created some ROMs that are extremely stable !
I see.
Is there any (easy) way to make those ROMs german?
Comments on stock ROM and add languages:
Have to agree that most stock ROMs are sluggish and terrible. Even back at the Kaiser days none of the ATT ROMs was able to satisfy me.
Before you select a custom ROM R E A D what people say and what issues they have! Most issues are very specific and may not affect you at all.
Furthermore, for now, I would stay away from 6.5.1 and 6.5.3 ROMs (with the Windows buttons at the bottom). They are kinda beta and the VGA port of Manila 2.5 isn't perfect or good enough for daily use in my opinion. There are stable 6.5 ROMS with Manila 2.1 which can be used and IMHO all of them are faster and more stable as the stock or branded ROMS (I mean HTC or for example ATT modified ROMS).
As far as other languages go, Monx cooked some custom ROMS in the past in Dutch and German though his current ROMS are Manila 2.5 and new WinMo based (see my note above) and nothing for a ROM novice.
Without judgement NRG's 6.5 and Aruppenthals are a good start into custom ROMs, just look for WinMo 6.5 and Manila 2.1 versions.
Did one actually every try to set regional to i.e. German and see what happens? Look around for language packs as well.
List of ROMS I would suggest:
NRG "Photon" but only the 21864 built
Aruppenthals (though based on the newer WinMo version)
Note:
These are my PERSONAL suggestions and do not do any positive or negative justice to ANY other chef out there but in my PERSONAL opinion these are the easiest to handle for a new "flasher".
Hi all,
I just got my Hero and haven't tried a custom rom jet. Therefor i want to start with the most "stock-like" and stable 2.1 rom, so no fancy extra's.. only to get the 2.1 feeling.
Which rom would you guys advise?
So to be clear, this is NOT a topic for finding " the best rom there is " (cause posts on that topic are always removed..) but just to look for the most basic , stable 2.1 rom.
Hope someone can help, thanks!
VillainRom 5.5
i didn't get along with villain; sensehero is the only 2.1 that's lasted more than 24 hours on my phone.
m8
try both of them and choose
(personally I like SenseHero)
I use VanillaEclair 2.0.1
Tried Villian, but it felt a bit slow trying to navigate menus, as well as a bit bored of sense so wanted a change

same. tried lots of 2.1 roms and found this one most reliable.
fast, stable, no batt drain and good support.
check it out here.
Hi Guys,
thanks for all of your quick reply's , this should get me started!
Guess i'll try Vanilla's first
You might like the SuperHero when it is released to public. Meant to be as fast as non-sense android with a couple of sense features chucked in for good measure.
For me it's SlideVillain - it's beautifull and very fast&stable. In my opinion it's even faster when you also activate app2sd good luck
Hi guys, I've been searching for rom that is fast, stable but with new camera driver that resolves flashlight problem (too bright flash lite) it should look like stock as much as it is possible, I tried Energy's reference rom, but I'm quite unsatisfied with speed of htc sense
Thanks for help in advance...
PS: I would prefer 6.5.3 roms...
artemis has all the htc uptates and looks exactly like stock and is very fast, however it is 6.5.5. btw this should have gone in the q&a section
Huh, I've used energy, axlor, another simple rom, liaroms and so far no one beats energy for speed. You might have occasional freeze ups, but speed has never been a problem.
Try a cleanEX ROM - and yeah, this should've been in HD2 Q&A..
am currently running VaniliaEclair 4.0, want to flash a new rom, but dont want to change after that for a while
a question. Whats new in froyo ? its better to flash a eclair rom or froyo nowdays ? how stable is that ?
which rom do u prefer ? that are most stable, fast and great batterylife ?
i saw a benchmark thread here a while ago, listed that vaniliaEclair 5.0 was the fastest one and got the most power of all the roms. But that was a while ago... which rom is the leading one right now ?
I personally like Floyo. Everything that matters to me works nicely. Haven't found anything that doesn't work.
Allot of people would say Froyd Villain, Though its nice, it hasent had any update for the past few months.
Ok a small text about the differences of the 3 that are out there who got atleast a name.
1. Froyd: Made by the well known Villainteam. It was for its time the best one (2 months ago) Still runs nice, had a wicked fast GPS fix, 5 to 10 sec. Has allot of preinstalled apps. On the villainsite there are allot of themes you can use with this rom. And I mean ALLOT
2. Elelinux: More up to date then Froyd, way less themes avalable then Froyd, though more stable for my taste. Still some preinstalled apps.
3. Floyo, My fav. Clean, basic fast, and up to date . Made by the creator of the awesome FlyKernel, wich i now even use with my Slide Port rom. This one had 2 awesome themes you can choose to use, its fast basic and stable like a good oiled up car .
I would say Floyo is the best, but thats my oppinion .
Have never tried Fusion rom, cuss the notes dont really atract me to use, and i havent seen any themes for it . Some say its nice some don't just try them all and use the one you like
I've tried them all. FROYO_2.2_Special_Edition_v2 by elelinux is the first one I'm using for more then a week.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I liked VanillaEclair4, now i have Floyo.
VE4 little faster, but no updates anymore.
But i have not test any else ROM, so i canĀ“t say...
all are great, try them all and choose the one suitable you
Wish these topic were locked immediately with the comment "learn to read"
FYI - i could link you to at least 10 topics from the last month discussing the exact same thing and nothing has changed - its getting frustrating seeing the same thing over and over again
FusionROM is pretty decent, but I like Floyo the best. It is very stable.
HWMNBN has a pretty good 2.2 ROM out right now (Cronos Froyo). It is very quick and responsive and has a really nice optional Galaxy-based theme.
hmm i have hard time to choose rom =) i really dont like to try each out it will take forever for me xD
so basicially the best rom to go is Floyo ? if i want a 2.2 rom ? i want to run with flykernel 11, is it ok ? how stable will it go ?
so is it more powerfull than VaniliaEclair 5 ?
btw i have read that froyo is 2.5 times faster than eclair, is it true ? i mean htc hero will never get the official 2.2

It's a good 2.2 ROM to start with, IMO. Very stable.
Pretty sure Flykernel-11 in included in Floyo. The ROM dev is also the kernel dev (Erasmux).
If you don't like it, just flash another ROM! Hell, flash all of them this weekend if you'd like to.
