I'm pleased to see Eris is rooted. however what if in the future, Verizon decided to ship out Eris with Official 2.1 pre-installed, how will we be able to root Eris from there?
I don't see the Eris shipping with 2.1 from what I understand the Erie is being phased out and the 2.1 ota update will probably be after that. this is pure speculation I may add

Dont worry man. There is no way to know for sure.. But im willing to bet 2.1 for the HTC Eris will be rooted before that would ever be a concern. And if somehow it does happen and no root is found, then everyone with a leak ROM install is back to where they started..
they're discontinuing the Eris so I don't see it coming up.

Really, where did you see this? Can you link me an official press release?
As far as I know, the eris is selling quite well and Verizon has no need to discontinue it.
@OP: If they release 2.1 on new devices we are in the same boat as all of us with the 2.1 leak... Rest assured that we are still working on getting root for 2.1.

Maybe you would know then.... if say 6 months from now our eris breaks down and we have the insurance, will we be getting a refurbished eris or be offered the next best thing (incredible)....???
Supposedly, the Eris' end of life is in May.
I don't know how they replace phones.. but I would assume a refurb, I HIGHLY doubt the Incredible, with the specs it has? No way. Maybe the moto droid.
& as far as I can tell, they haven't officially said it in a press release, but there's a screenshot circulating;

I'm actually hopeful that the Eris will get an official 2.2 update. I've been with Verizon for many years and if they want to keep me under contract they better keep me satisfied....which means keep my phone up-to-date (somewhat) at least until the end of my 2 years. Not that it really matters, seeing as we have awesome developers that put us on Froyo before most phones got their OTA.
On a side note. Anyone heard the rumors of Android 2.5?

The Eris isn't mentioned but the implications are that our phone will get 10.1 flash.
By this I mean our phone is HTC and the Incredible is HTC. Once it gets official OTA we can port it to the Eris and try to get flash working for us. I think that's what TC must have meant.
The sales rep at the Verizon store told me all the Droid phones were getting 2.2 rolled out including the Eris. I saw some sales reps using it still so it's still a pretty widely used phone.

One incentive for Verizon to update the Eris to Froyo would be not to disgruntle existing customers and causing them to leave the network when their contract is up. I know, me personally, that I'm pretty disgruntled about the quality of service they give us Eris owners.
Gingerbread is going to be Android 3.0, and will have a recommended CPU speed of 1 GHz. Yes, devs will probably get it running on the Eris, but the hardware might just be too depreciated by that point to run it.

By the time it does come I'm sure ill be on another carrier or at least a different phone. But in the off chance the vibrant gets froyo in the next 10 years I want to be ready. I got ji6 ota so I don't really know what kies is. Will I need to be kies-ready for froyo or will it just be an ota like it should be? If I have to use kies, where did other people learn about it? I'm not at all interested in it but I don't want to miss the main reason I paid $600 for this stupid phone (froyo). So basically, what is kies and how do I use it?

Anyone know exactly how many official dates Samsung/T-Mobile have now officially failed to do this simple task that so many xda devs did long ago? Since it is clearly ready (available to rooted SGS phones) does that mean the culprit here is T-Mobile? They already have awful service and only 1 good phone. This failure seems like their death wish.
I wouldnt go so far as to say it is ready. The recent 2.2 roms are really good but they still have some minor issues like the headphone jack problem.
On twitter, all Samsung/TMO say is by the end of the year so lets just leave it at that.
BTW, that is for Galaxy UK

Coming from the GSM HTC Hero it's now my understanding that the carriers and manufacturers have ZERO incentive to rush out any update to your phone. I bought the Hero because HTC said Éclair was just around the corner, well not so fast. It didn't come all that quickly after many excuses. It took them a month of Sunday's to finally release it when their EVO was running Froyo.
This time I didn't buy the Vibrant expecting an update anytime soon so I'm not disappointed. BTW, don't expect an official Gingerbread release from Samsung.
Say what you will about Apple but at least they update the phones.
Thats why i jumped ship from tmo because they did the same thing with the original mytouch witch i haD they said we would get froyo way back in febuary then they said march tgen april and so on so back in september i finally terminated my contract then a month later they roled it out of no were i was pretty pissed lmao

I don't think HTC tests. I could be wrong, but that leaves all of the blame of Verizon testing.
I don't think Verizon tests that thoroughly either tbh. They have too many existing phones receiving updates, as well as too many new phones coming out which need to be tested. Verizon is prob too busy testing the Vigor and Nexus Prime to be worried about our "old" Thunderbolt.

HTC surely tests their side of things but presumably hands it off to VZW. Whether VZW modifies the s/w or not, who knows. I would think it's up to VZW to check things like voicemail notifications though and not HTC's responsibility.
Here's a poof poof pass moment slap Verizon hands and just get it from HTC then Verizon can put the bloated ware on their app site for us to download if we want. This craming stuff down our throats is getting old .want voice mail notifications down load it.

For those of you still waiting, I just called HTC and was told this exact same thing, word for word. Clearly reading from a script. Too bad. If you "want" to root Globatrons guide and support in his thread is top notch. The decision is yours though, It's your device. Well unfortunately only Ipad users live in a perfect world. Any a few days Globaltron will have us a freshly minted US root version and then we can complain about something else.
HTC promised us the ICS update by the end of July. Wrong again. Here we are in August and no ICS update. I think I am like most people and dont really care about the update itself so much as HTC releasing the source code so we can get serious modding done. Personally, I am running CleanROM and it works great. I wouldnt mind having a new CleanROM based on the offical ICS update, though, if it ever comes out.
Either way, I will NEVER buy another Verizon or HTC phone again. This was my first on both of them and it will be my last for sure. Soon as my 2 yr contract is up, I'm ditching Verizon.
Edit: Well, go figure. I post this and then the update comes out the next day. Mod, delete this whole thread at will, it serves no purpose now.
You're surprised?
Because of a mere update? Okay... They never promised July, they said summer which as far as I know it still is.So this is why devs hate when people ask for ETAs.

Dear Andrew S,
Thank you for contacting HTC regarding the Android 4.0 update. I understand that you are excited to receive the update for your HTC Rezound. I will be happy to share the information I have with you.
The ICS (Android 4.0) update will be released for the Rezound by the end of this month (July) with final pushes in August. Due to localization, testing, and partner approvals, updates do not roll out to all devices at the same time. For devices on a wide variety of carriers and in many countries, rollouts can take up to 45 days from the initial update to reach everyone. It’s almost here, Andrew! We are as excited as you are. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week!

It's not HTC its Verizon. Verizon has this new thing called the cloud that saves you emails and pic ect....... I know this because I had a htc Inc2 that received a update and it lost emails Facebook ect.....so Verizon offered me the rezound because they had no time line to fix it so thanks to Verizon cloud we don't have ics this is why htc keeps posting it on there web page its available . Isn't the point of having a forum like XDA, which has so many talented developers, that you don't have to wait if you don't want to? As about a billion people have posted on all these "waiting for OTA" threads have said, ICS for the Rezound is available RIGHT NOW for anyone that wants it - you don't even have to root - I'm new to the Rezound, but have been rooting phones with the help of XDA for years now - i have CHOSEN to wait for the OTA, knowing that at any time I can flash one of the great ROMS that have been put together with great care and support by some really smart people - it just seems odd that people who are on a forum dedicated to NOT WAITING for manufacturers to get their act together will post repeatedly about how upset they are about having to wait -

Excellent point, will still need them to officially release ICS so in turn they have to release the ICS kernel source code also then the devs can do even more great work.
