Camera Driver Updateable? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Firstly, mega props to everyone involved in helping me root and get my Hero from 1.5 to 2.1 (VillainRom 5.2) It's been running smooth for a day or so, but I have one issue I wonder if anyone can help with.
On 1.5, the camera was pretty average, it'd work okay for most things. Now I'm on 2.1 though it's nowhere near as good, it's really green and the focus is pretty terrible.
I presume this is because the driver in VillainRom is set up for the Nexus One CCD (I'm guessing this because I got an email from the Android team saying "thanks for buying a Nexus One" when I'd synced my google account, so I presume the ROM was at some point a nexus one?). Either way, can I update/rollback the camera driver to the 1.5 hero one as it is vastly superior?
TLDR: Can we roll back the camera driver to the stock 1.5 one?
Thanks again all, your wiki and guides proved invaluable.

You are coming from Villainrom?
You should use our bug tracker if there is problems at www.villainrom.co.uk/bug
As for the Camera green issue, it have been reported, the team is looking into it.

Thanks, sorry, didn't realise there was dedicated bug tracking, glad it's being looked into

I noticed that on my phone. Try messing about with the white balance, the auto-balance was setting my screen to a greenish hue, but when I changed it to incandescant, it was fine.
Can't help with focus though.

[Q] CM6.2 Camera B&W Preview Screen

Currently Running Jt's Awesome CM6.2 Beta, (Quick thanks to Everyone Involved in bringing this to Us)
I Have a Personal Issue and wondering if anyone feels the same or could lend me a Helping Hand in getting it fixed.
My Question, Relates to the Black and White Preview. I gotta say that as much as i tried to like it, Im just not a fan of the Black and White.
I cant seem to get good looking pictures specially in dark or low light areas. where I cant see what Im shooting.
I tried Looking at the Settings and those were only for flash/contrast/Gps/zoom.
Switching the Camera Apk from the one in EC01 Rom, as well as an ASOP one but that did not thing, well it actually just removed the camera link from the launcher and App drawer
Once again this is a Personal Preference Issue/Question, that I Figured I'd Bring up, just in case anyone felt the Same way...
Its Not meant to Bang On Anyone Related to this Awesome project
Thanks in Advance.
I'm right there with you, and with all the hope everyone has in JT, I'm sure he'll fix that as well as the camcorder issue. What I never understood (Unless I overlooked it completely), was the camera didn't have a 5MP camera option, correct me if I'm wrong.
Yes, I hope Jt will get them fixed soon enough as well.
In regards to the 5MP you are correct, i didn't see an option either, which means its already set to 5, or its lower, which would explain why sometimes the pictures come out extra grainy.
Now that EDO1 came out, hopefully there some good stuff in there so that we finally see a Full CM7. But only time will tell

[Q] [HELP FROM ALL DEVS.] Camera low-fps issue

Hello! This is a request to all the developers for Galaxy S II. You probably already know that some Galaxy S II suffer from the problem of low-fps (stuttering) with low-light conditions. That is resolved with the firmware of the camera of the Samsung I997 (Infuse 4G), but putting this firmware, the LED flash does not work anymore. You can change the firmware?
The firmware does help is the SIEG03. Camera firmwares topic here on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098834&page=110
Thank you in advance if can help.

It would be great if some of devs look at this fw and changes what is problem so flash stop working
Indeed, i would be great +1
I sent a private message to Chainfire and email to Supercurio. I hope they meet!
Great thread! SC cameras are the ones that have low light framerate issue. If someone resolves the flash issue it will be great.
Is this the same thing as the low-light autofocus laggy thing?
I made a video at my friends birthday in a nightclub and it's crap! Had to delete it! Blurring and lagging every few seconds!
I know potatoman might do something about it but he's busy at uni now, I'm kinda surprised nobody has jumped on this issue. One of the big reasons I got the S2 was the camera...turns out it's not that good
Yes. Its that problem. And is laggy beacuse of some galaxy s2 camera modules have some bad firmware. The SIEGO3 fix the suttering in video but remove the led flash of the videos and we cant use it like assisted lamp for autofocus. If someone implement in the firmware, our problem is solved.
+1
It would be great! Thanks
Maybe someone who knows cyanogen can tell him to tell samsung to fix it. I mean he does work for them now

Maybe Samsung are aware of the framerate issue... they should be considering how many of us have this problem, but before they can release the firmware it proberly need to be tested ect so takes time.
Im using the infuse 4G firmware & more than happy to plod along with it, until a fix is released by either a Dev or Samsung.
I had a Galaxy S before i got the S2, so having no light in video isn't to much of a problem for me, the camera flash works which is more important, even without the pre focus light the camera still locks on 99% of the time in low light.
TBH that pre focus light of the orginal cam firmware was annoying as hell to some people, as it use to blind them before the flash kicked in lol.
Anyways im happy with having constant 30fps in either 720p or 1080p without any framerate problems.
The well-known dev's are unlikely to respond to PMs as they'd get hundreds\thousands a day, mostly from noobs, so unless they're from people they already know, I wouldn't expect a response. Plus a lot of them don't frequent XDA as it's turned into a noobfest where the "popular" devices are involved.
You could try posting over on the Cyanogen forums.
Steve (Cyanogen) is not likely to be in a position to "tell" Samsung to fix anything, and certainly not for a device that is as old as the SGS2 is now.
You could try logging a fault with Samsung themselves, they have been known to respond, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Ok but when I paid the phone, my money worked very well and did not need to decrease the exposure!

The same for me! I don't feel a strong lack of flash, but can be useful with app. that use it like "Tiny Flashlight" etc.

Just a heads up that while I'd love to help with this, I don't experience the issue myself, so I wouldn't even be able to test if my fix would work or not. I'm also not comfortable with my code being flashed- my firmware modding capabilities are limited at best... and flashing a bad camera firmware can be irreversible.
Sorry guys, good luck finding someone else who can help though.

[Q] Camera on ViperRez 1.03

I would have liked to just post this in the ViperRez thread, but I guess the rules dictate I must ask it here. I'm running ViperRez 1.03 and I absolutely love it. However, after searching the thread, and trying a couple fixes, I am still getting the issue with the camera not functioning. You go to take a picture and it seems like it fails to auto-focus and then just boots you back to your homescreen. No FC error or anything. It's seemingly random, and quite frustrating. My questions is whether or not there has been a definitive fix to this problem or not. And if not, does anyone have any recommendations for a good quality camera app to replace stock?
Disable auto focus and face detection that should help

Fix works for camera, but not for video
Turning off auto focus and face recognition works for the camera, but the video function still closes back to the home screen. Any suggestions on how to fix that are most welcome.

Thanks for the tip. I don't mean to be negative, however I still don't get 100% functionality from doing this. I took 5 pictures just now and on the 6th it did it. And not to mention, with auto-focus turned off, 3 of those 5 are extremely blurry. Is this bug an issue with the rom and the hardware or just a bug with the camera app? Could using a different camera app from the market help? I absolutely love this ROM but its looking like I'm going to downgrade my entire user experience and use a sense 3.6 rom. It seems like it should be such an easy fix, I'm used to much bigger hurdles on much harder phones to dev for.
I don't mean to come across as entitled, I'm just confused really. I came from the Bionic and the Droid X, both of which had locked bootloaders, yet the development for those phones seemed to go much smoother. Seems like with this phone, only sense 3.6 roms are stable. Everything else seems to be spotty at best. I'd be happy if AOSP worked correctly, I don't really NEED sense. AOSP roms have more issues than the camera.

Try swapping your storage partition default on the camera app. It shouldn't be doing that, mine's been working great for months and I take a lot of pictures.
Mine started acting up as well after a few days of use. I ended up just reflashing the rom to fix it and so far so good. Next time I might just try flashing the kernel alone and see what happens. I have a feeling its a rom issue though since im on vinylfreaks kernel and not the stock one, ( runs cooler with it).
I also wish there was just a way to reflash the camera app. I might try extracting the rom zip file also next time but it happened to me out on the road and I needed the camera working so couldnt do much troubleshooting
edit:
found this post, seems like the same problem. He used titanium backup to wipe camera app data. check the link below

[Q] Motorola ATRIX 4g mb860 at&t would like Snapseed but not compatible

Hello people, I am unrooted and have enjoyed my ATRIX 4g even though I have been stuck with the final ginger bread ota release at&t gave us and have waited patiently for the promised ota ICS upgrade which they now posted we will not get, I am aware that there is a Leak Test ICS that is buggy, and have been mods made or provided over here by your awesome developers bringing our devices up to JB level even, but am a fan of the functioning camera and finger print biometrics personally. I am a noob as far as Android rooting but very tech savvy and with devices and software in general, every app I have wanted to use has been great on this phone regardless of what version it was made for until today... I am quite into photo editing and have a ton of photo edit apps and engage in IG a bit, we as the underdogs over at IG were always fighting to make our tweaks and edits look as good as an Iphone edit mainly because they had an app called Snapseed, I was very pleased. When I read google had purchased this app drom NIK software a month ago and today it was finally released for Android, I went to Google Play and it for the first time ever said this app is not compatible with your device, it needs 4.0 or above in other words ICS, now my main question here is if I did root flash a mod similar to ICS or the unstable leak version will Google play still just see the signature of my phone and not allow a download or if I was running a new os would it get around that issue, I did also write the developer but doubt they are too concerned about making the app backward compatible as Google also purchased Motorola and offer a mere $100.00 towards upgrading to a different moto phone and I love this ine and do not have the money at the noment to do so.. any advice would be greatly appteciated, as to a a suitable os and whether or not it would even allow us Atrix 4g users to download Snapseed if our phone is recognized by its name and autodetection by googlr play tegardlrss of os, I mean it's a fast phone I've had no problems, everything works, dual core, good ram, speed stirage etc.. thanks Stu
Shows up fine on EPinter's CM10. Market just checks what version of Android your device is using. I haven't installed it to check, but will be doing so shortly. I'll get back to you about how it fairs on our devices.
Edit: After about 10 mins of playing around, it's running pretty well. No noticeable lag whatsoever. Kinda regret paying for PicSay Pro since this one seems to have a simpler UI.

Thanks very much sir, I will now have to look into this EPinter's CM10 and learn the whole process and hopefully not brick my phone, I'm good with directions, does the CM10 have a working camera and fingerprint scanner, and can I save my whole phone image if it all went south? I also paid for PicSayPro and many others too, love graphic arts and photography so the cam although only 5mp is important at times.
Anyway thanks very much yet again for the info.
No problem. Yes, you should make a nandroid backup once you have a custom recovery. It is one of the recommended steps followed by an exclamation mark. =P The only thing lacking on EPinter's CM10 is video camera (related to missing HWA due to improper kernel source) Regular camera works fine for still shots. I use camera fx & camera 360, both work without any issues. And No, the fingerprint scanner doesn't work since it's not a part of CM source.
There is an unofficial, "official" ICS (ICSROM & ATRICS) that has proper HWA with video camera and fingerprint scanner but the battery life is terrible and the phone gets really hot. I personally had random restarts every few minutes.EPinter's CM10 does well as a daily driver, but if you're going to go through the trouble, might as well try all the roms available! =D

Thanks very much for this info, I will research these downloads, I watched a youtube vid of cm10 and looked good, seems the Atrix is a bit more of a pain to work with than other Androids but will look into the whole process of unlocking and fastboots and the nanandroid back up etc.
Greatly appreciate the help.

Yes, the Atrix is a pain compared others, but once rooted with a custom recovery (IMHO RomRacer's custom CWM 5.0.2.7 is the best, never had issues) it's just like any other device. Heck, I remember flashing 3-4 ROMs a day, it was insane! =P
I would recommend downloading Titanium Backup from the market as well. It will help you quickly backup your most used apps w/ data/settings and reinstall them after installing a new ROM. Good luck and have fun.
P.S. Thanks for Snapseed!

Help Me Pick a ROM Please

I have the Amaze 4g, and am on the last stock ROM. I'm rooted and such, but was wondering if there are any custom ROM's worth swapping to.
I'm looking for full (or essentially full) functionality, and compatibility with google apps.
Better battery life.
Possibly better control over the notifications without having to use LightFlow (a fine app, but a bit of a battery eater).
It doesn't have to do anything particularly fancy, as I mostly use it as a phone, calendar, text, gvoice, email device, and don't care too much about fancy customizing and such, though it would be nice to have the calendar (I use business calendar), emails, texts, and missed calls on the lock screen, as well as a faster way to clear the notifications once I turn on the screen.
Anyways, there you have it. I use my nexus 7 2013 for most of my other stuff, so the primary thing I'm looking for is solid day to day performance, good notifications, and battery life.
Thanks very much!
Best ROM.

Since it's sort of taboo for anyone here to recommends ROM's, you would well to look at the developer's forum, and the first post in each thread usually has the working/not working info.
Also, googling the web will return some good articles.
I currently am running through a bunch of ROM's myself, as stability and fully-functioning camera are essential for me. In my trials--yes, at least 10 ROM's in a week--It turns out that just about any later ICS--above 4.0--and newer JB or KK doesn't have a fully functioning camera--may be mostly functioning, but not exactly fully functioning--unless it's STOCK-based. I'm staying away from stock based if I can help it, as the ROM's are sort of busier than I would like, and would rather avoid the T-Mo upsell hotspot.
I've learned that the most recent CM11 KK rom is just about stunning, but can't use it because of my camera requirement. Some ROM's have T-Mo upsell hotspots, and some do not. I think the earliest ICS ROM's have good cameras for the most part--and some of the later JB will work if the camera doesn't have to be "perfect." Alas, I need my camera perfect, and currently have been using Energy ICS 4.0.3 as my sort of nandroid back-up base to return to in between other testings.
Thanks very much for the detailed response.
It's true, a lot of people get touchy about such subjects, it's just been so long since I've done the whole Rom swapping scene, that i had no idea where to even start. I looked through a few, but I'm away of doing what you're doing now, without a basic general approach. So many Roms are about being the newest, or the most innovative, that sometimes it's hard to sort out the ones that just plain add simple performance boosts without sacrificing other things.
I will definitely give energy a shot, and stick with that if everything seems in order on my end.
Cheers.

While several other ROM's would do for a perfectly functioning camera, the max manual ISO listed in settings was 800--the Energy I'm using gave 1250. Probably it matters not a hoot really, however that made for my decision.

Yeah, that's probably an unusable iso for a camera phone. I rarely even used settings that high on my high end DSLR's, but it's always good to have a little extra headroom, just in case you're in a no-flash-allowed area. You can always do a little photoshopping later on and clean up the grit. Good enough for an online crop anyways.
I almost never use my phone or tablet cameras, but I definitely like to have them handy for a quick snap shot when needed. Now that high end point and shoots have wifi, wifi sd cards are pretty cheap now too, and are pocketable with quite good sensors, the phone only comes out for shooting if I forgot to have a camera with me (I have a dsc-rx100 ii, and an lx5, for pocket use).
I agree though, no camera on the phone would be a deal breaker for a ROM. You never know when you'll need it handy.
