Questions about Rooting! - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, Im Kinda new to all of this, and I have read the instructions to root your phone in all. But the only thing that concerns me about rooting is that my phone is Flashed to another Carrier (Mobi PCS / Hawaii). Will I be able to Root without affecting the flash? I've been wanting to root for quite some time.
Please and Thanks!!!

I'm not a developer but i'm gonna say no. You will probably be able to make calls because both the carriers are cdma. Worst thing you could do is try to flash a rom and if it doesnt work go back to your carrier and reflash their software.

[Q] VIDEOTRON T999V Model CMW ROMS + WAY TO ROOT IT ?

Is there a custom rom made for SGSIII under videotron, model #SGH-t999v
Is there a tutorial that explain how to root this baby under T999v, i want to remove all that crap they install and be able to do like other user with different carrier.
thanks
Since no one seem to care about this phone version, someone Could you tell me how to make a full backup of my stock phone before i mess something in it.
I'll work on my own cmw
Correct me if I'm wrong but it wouldn't help you anyways as you need root access to restore protected sections like the system partition.
And also I think you need root read specific areas like the boot partition just to back it up.
You are probably right since i dont have ton of knowledge with this. i 'll wait until someone with higher skill than me post the way to do it or the stock roms or a custom one
Theres videosvon how to root already. I have never rooted before until last night and it was pretty darn easy. Should only take minutes.
Sent from my SGH-T999
I have tried several roms from the tmobile section on my videotron sgs3.
All of them have worked ok except for the known bugs.

[Q] Stock modem not working

i just got a not my 2nd one , ok so this note was unlock by calling att so after that i put in my simple mobile card and every thing was fine till today not getting 4g or edge any thing cant make or recive calls nore msg questing is am wondering is it becase of att stock modem or do i have to root and install custom rom with a tmo modem ? i was hoping to leave phone as is just in case official update comes in on jb ... omg what do i do to be honest to what happend to my other note am afraid to flash any thing on this one but if i have to i will
Have you paid or checked your account balance lately? Removed and replaced your SIM card improperly? And regarding T-Mobile, did you ever even have it operating with T-Mobile SIM card, as I'm lead to assume it's an at&t model?

Hi. By reading some of your other posts I understand your fears, but it's best to stay calm and not get all rooted and flash happy before you access your situation. You bought or replaced your previous i717 Note. Again, I'm assuming it's an at&t model, just from your OP. Already unlocked. You are a T-Mobile customer, but wanted to stay stock because a rumor of up coming update. Well truth is, you should bought the T-Mobile version for that to happen. You do not have the correct modem software installed. So you wanted to run on a AWS network (T-Mobile,wind,moblicity,...) Not the end of the world, BUT if you mess this shiny new phone up again, just maybe...
Remember, don't get panicked and rush ahead of yourself. Follow the right process for Rooting and installing a custom recovery. ClockworkMod or TeamWinRecoveryMod, both work great. People are suggesting the latter Mod, I personally fought to get my CWM updated correctly, and have read it's easier to install TWRP. Once this far it's fairly important to create a NANDROID backup of your factory ROM, I definitely suggest it. So there. A shiny new phone with a world of shiny possibilities. You then need to get some custom modem/radio/baseband (multiple terms same meaning in this/your case) software installed. Main thing is to not rush. Understand what you are doing, before doing it. Once rooted warranty is gone and it's on you and only you to be held responsible for your actions. All the required guides, steps, files are all here stickied in the correct locations of the i717 Note forum. In fact, this has been asked and answered mulitiple times and ways in the last few days and posts regarding T-Mobile and Wind. Quick look around the Q&A section even give you great results.

[Q] OTAs, rooting, and stock software

Hi! I'm a total cell newbie, so pardon.
I want to root my phone just so I can actually put apps on my SD card. There's a few bits I want to understand first:
I've read that I am not going to want to accept OTAs. I've also read that some phones automatically accept OTAs. Since I don't plan to change my ROM (and I am not entirely sure what ROM refers to... is my "TouchWiz" a ROM?), how can I be sure that my default software isn't going to go trying to install OTAs without asking me?
Is a bricked device actually completely worthless? There's no way to get it back into a working state at ALL, or just no way to get it working without help from your carrier? And what is a "soft brick"?
If I manage to root my phone with the CASUAL one-touch program, how do I unroot if I were interested in doing so?
Please either avoid or explain any jargon you may use in your reply. For instance, if you refer to opening an app.... please just do the courtesy of saying it's an app rather than just assuming I know. If you use an acronym, assume I have no idea what it stands for. It took me forever to figure out what an OTA was, and I still don't quite understand what a ROM is... and that's the extent of my acronyms.
Thanks.
Wow, a lot of demands. Why not start here, as it should answer many of your questions. Threads are stickied for a reason.

Touch wiz is a style of ROM if you will.
Touch wiz roms for Samsung.
Motor blur roms for Motorola.
Sense roms for HTC
Aosp roms for nexus phones.
When you have a "touch wiz ROM"
It builds from the stock base code basically. They add freatures and themes and basically ROMs are endless to what they can do.
My phone never tells me about OTAs.
I believe the only time they do this is when on a stock rooted ROM is when something bad could go wrong
Never had any problems on custom ROMs however.
Next,
Bricked devices are very rare and only happen out of stupidity or carelessness in most cases.
Google will tell you how to fix. But I wouldn't worry about it.
As a very frequent flasher of ROMs I have experienced many of times a soft brick. Or a phone in boot loop.
This is when the device powers on but will not boot up. ( stuck on boot animation or splash screen are most common.)
ALL OF THESE ARE FIXABLE.
You can always wipe in a recovery and normally that fixes it.
Soft bricks normally happen from not wiping or bad download.
Also remember you have Odin as a last resort.
Also you can read the sticky threads in android development to figure out how to unroot
They will give you a better explanation on how to do so.
All this is answered by xda and Google.
They are what taught me what I know
They will teach you as well over time.
PM me if you have any other questions
Hit the thanks button so I feel important!
Haha
God bless the American people.

Q. Thinking to start root. (Help needed)

Hello there people!
As you all know every Android user finally goes for the thing called "Rooting" so yes I'm an beginner over it and read alot of discussions but still couldn't find Convincing discussion so I need complete procedure about the Stock ROM and how to back it up in order to Step backward towards it just in case if something strange happens. YES I'll flash a Custom ROM so i'll take the guide as well.
THANKYOU.
Hi there. One thing you will find out about quickly, is that many methods to modify your phone are very specific. Not only to what manufacturer, but what model, what update it is on, if it was purchased from a carrier or unbranded and unlocked, and whether or not there are any warranty issues to consider. Most of the time you can return the device to exactly as your received it and sometimes there is something that is triggered that can not be reset that will show you've modified the phone. So, let us know what you have and we can get you pointed in the right direction to get started.

I have the "Quatro Z4" of the Qmobile company i.e Unbranded but that doesn't mean the unbranded stuff can't get rooted. Yeah I am seeking perfect rooting options and Recovery options with perfect Stock rom Backup.

This guide has everything you need to root and to use the ClockworkMod recovery which will allow you to make a full backup of your current system (these backups are called Nandroids)
I haven't had a chance to look around to see if there are any roms for it yet, but that guide should be a good head start. I would recommend reading through the thread first to make sure there won't be any surprises.

[Q] Noobie question

I got an AT&T Galaxy Mega I think its the i527, but I'm using it with MetroPCS. I wanted to flash a custom ROM but I'm totally new to this world. :silly:
Hopefully somebody could help me.
1.- What would happen if I do a factory reset? (would I be able to use it on MetroPCS)
2.- Since MetroPCS and T-Mobile are compatible could I use a ROM like this one?
And by the way, when I plug my cell phone to my laptop it starts to charge but I can't open files its like not recognizing it does anybody know whats up?
btw2: I still have the unlocking code would I be able to use it again?

You may need to install drivers for computer to recognize, but mine does that automatically. If rooted, you may need to re-install.
Factory reset is just going to erase everything.
If it is an ATT model i527, there is no recovery for it yet and I beleive that transends all unlocking.
Do the smart thing for a noobie. Dont flash a darn thing until you educate yourself. Read read read. Google your questions. Put yourself in a situation where you understand what your doing. Dont guess or follow someone else unless you are confident in there level of expertise. Nobody will replace your phone here.
Post all information.
Example......you did not say whether your phone is upgraded to 4.4 or still running 4.2 ?????
1 little detail can mean the biggest difference.
Good luck
As always, I will check back, because I am still learning too.
