New ROM over OLD ???? - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I'm a nubie,
Could anyone tell me I added my 1st rom over the weekend which was succesful apart from the fact my orientation on the screen is not working.
I have been told to try a few more roms to see if this is the phone or the ROM (My feeling is that its the ROM) as it was working fine beforehand.
Can somebody tell me if I need to delete the old ROM 1st prior to installing the new modded ROM?
Also if I went back to my original 3uk factory ROM would I need to go through the Gold Card all over again?
Thanks for your help
Regards
Ray

not directly rom dev related, therefore moved to q&a
next time pls search first for solutions and only then post possibly rom related problems (orientation issue sounds like one) in the specific rom thread
best

you didn't even tell us what rom you are using, and yet you want a solution for your problem.
and what do you mean by "delete old rom", you cannot delete it once flashed to your phone.

Excuse me but I'm only new to this so my apologies. My details are as below.
Firmware is shown as 1.5 on my phone and the ROM I downgraded to was build number HTC 2.73.405.5, as I had to download my firmware I was told before I could up upload any ROMS which has proved succesful.
With regards to deleting my old ROM I presumed when I copied that over to my SD card it would stil be on my SD card when i uploaded a new one?
Regards Ray

Sorry, I also meant to ask do I complete the wipe option every time I upload a new ROM?

So AFTER you downgraded your ROM, you then installed a custom ROM yeah??? Or no?
What was the last one you "uploaded"?
Yes it is best to do a full wipe when switching ROMs. Sometimes when updating to a newer version of the same ROM it is not necessary to do a wipe but it will say in the notes of that ROM.
.... And you will only need your goldcard again if you install a ROM using one of the official RUU .exe files.
But if you want to go back to a branded 3uk ROM I'd suggest using the pre-rooted one from Modaco's Stock ROMs + radios in update.zip format for GSM Hero,.. No need for your goldcard then, and keeps the custom recovery console on so you can switch and change your ROMs.

Yes, I did put aHreo onto my phone but it wasnt working properly so I done a restore when I restarted my phone pressing home and menu using the installed software which in turn put it back to my downgraded HTC ROM version Build 2.73.405.5 (Hopefully I havent gone back to an official RUU as you describe). If so how would I know this? would it be when I try to update another unofficial ROM?
As it now has me worried !!!

Unrooting and downgrading G2 touch

Hi there, just got a question that i'm hoping somebody can answer for me.
Currently i'm running a Villain 4.0 Custom Rom on my phone. I'm now thinking of selling my Hero and upgrading to the desire.
I don't want to sell the phone in it's current state (i.e rooted with custom Rom), with no disrespect to the devs behind the ROM intended as they have done an excellent job, it does have battery life issues.
My questions are that to go back to its original state i.e a T-mobile G2 Touch is it a simple case of following the unlockrs guide http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/03/how-to-unroot-the-htc-hero/??
If so once reverted back to 1.5 stock will the person buying be able upgrade to 2.1 via the official route once it is released?
one more thing, does reverting to stock 1.5 have any issues? i've heard somewhere that GPS doesn't work if done.
Thanks for your patience in reading this long post and hopefully somebody can answer.
Cheers
install one of these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
and your phone will be "as first day"
I mean: ROM will be a "retail" one, radio, recovery image and SPL will be changed back to "official one"
ps: I don't think is a good idea to do this: HBOOT will changed and the next phone owner won't be able to install custom recovery, root and, ... since fastboot exploit is not anymore present. you should just install a stable SenseUI ROM that way rooting and other fun things will still be possible
install a stock generic rom, for example from here the HTC Generic 2.73.405.66 unrooted version. flash the latest radio before, this way you can make sure the gps works afterwards. then boot up the rom, check if everything works, go to recovery, wipe all, shut down the phone and put it in the box.
if you install any RUU the buyer has to go through the process of rooting again, wouldn't be nice imho.
and next time please check the subforum you are posting in, this was the wrong one...
Thanks for the replies guys
i think you're right, leaving the phone rooted would be the better option for the new buyer saving him the pain of the dreaded Gold card method.
I'll probably flash one of modacos roms. Now, since i'm only a noob on android and as i've understood from your posts, gps wont work. What do i need to do to get it to work? how do i flash different radios? is it before a rom flash or after?
@kendong2, sorry man i thought i was posting in the right forum, for future note where should i post a thread like this? Cheers.
Yeah, don't go down the process of installing an RUU.
Follow Kendong's instructions to the letter.

HELP ME! PLEASE! Urgent!

Okay, I just rooted my brother's HTC Hero (GSM Unlock) and updated it to 2.1 Villain, but there were some bugs, like in the messages app, the key board wouldn't show up in a conversation. FB Sync wouldn't sync pictures to his contacts. Is there any way I can downgrade back to the original 1.5? If so, can anyone give me a link to download that .zip? thanks!
*note* I tried flashing the official 2.1 update, it failed
And what is a Nandroid backup? Can I restore it with that?

You really should have read up before just rooting and flashing. A nandroid backup is a backup of the phone so you can restore to how it was before you started to play with it.
You can download the rom you require here.
You should have done a Nandroid backup before trying to flash a new ROM, this is a MUST DO everytime you plan on messing around with the phone, it would simply let you restore the backup back to normal.
You need to do a full wipe of the phone and flash the new ROM posted above.
Jamie.
Can I just flash a stock rom of the HTC Hero generic? I flashed a rooted one, but I keep getting this notification about an OTA,I tried installing it, but it fails. If I flash a stock rom (if possible) can I install the OTA's?
I seem to be having somewhat the same problem.
Although I didnt flash my hero to that custom rom you're mentioning.
The problem is that I've been running the modaco 3.0 rom for quite a while and wanted to get the stock 2.1 rom.
I've tried to flash it using the HTC tool but couldn't be done. I accidently overrided my nandroid backup of the stock 1.5 rom so I found a stock 1.5 on modaco's forum and flashed it.
Now I'm running 1.5, build 2.73.405.5
Every time I wipe the phone and start from scratch (setting up the phone as if it was new) I get a notification about a new OTA update. When I try to update it, the phone resets (seems fine) and it ends up in Nandroid and doesn't get any further.
Then I chose to reboot the phone and the phone runs as normal but still no new firmware.
What am I doing wrong?
I've also tried the HTC tool for flashing the ROM but end up with a connection error (170).
I have of course wiped the phone but it doesn't help...

I have the same problem! And when I do flash 2.1, the keyboard never appears when I go to the messages app. I just flashed an official stock 2.73.405.66 build, what if I do the OTA? Will it fail too? 'Cause I think it fails because last time, my phone was rooted.
Anyone got help? :-/

[Q] How do I change Roms?

I know this sounds pretty dumb but If I wanted to change The current Rom I'm using How do i do that? Do I just Follow how i did the first time its found on how to Flashing your First GSM USA 1024LEO ONLY!! (For Noobs)
(cant Copy link cause im a new member, and yes Im a T-mobile user)
I also heard that you need a Gold Card on the Thread called.
([TUT] How to change from one official ROM to another (including language)
Then i found this Post:
"You only need gold card to flash a different regions Factory roms then what came with your phone was shipped with not version number. So if it is WWE and you want to flash a different region then you would need to use gold card. But to downgrade the Rom to the 1.48 then you will need to find the 1.48 Factory Rom that matches what your phone was shipped with. And if your phone is branded then you will need that 1.48 Origianal rom.
Remember when you flash back to a factory rom after HSPL is installed then you will need to re install HSPL again to flash custom roms because it changes it back to factory SPL.-FunMCRider"
So i only need to use a gold card When I'm Changing Regions?
So I'm pretty much confused
about how to change Roms...Helpz?
same question here!!
I have Kumars ROM But I want to change to another Rom.. Do I need to delete the Kumars Rom? Also...On my phone I installed a SPB Mobile Shell and I deleted it, But It seeems to grab a lot of space in my phone memory.
Please help
Thanks

this is why it is always said to search before you post. First off, since you're talking about changing a rom , sounds like you already tried a custom rom. Unless you flashed back to a stock rom, you already have hard spl, second when you flash a rom it formats the device by removing present rom and installing new rom, depending on who you talk to, some people recommend task 29 before a flash, let me just tell you that I think is a good thing if you want a clean flash, and no you don't need a gold card, the only reason I've ever heard of a gold card being used is for a bad flash. So to make it easier on you, here's the steps.
1.starting with a stock rom, you need hard spl(specific to device)
2.if you already flashed custom rom, and did hard spl before, then you don't need to do it a second time.
3.if you want, do the task 29(optional)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=644781
4.since new to the game of flashing! use the Mskip's noob guide for flashing, that you mentioned before to avoid any mistakes. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=653614
5.another option are radios, but you might want to check into that after you get the flashing thing down first.
Disclaimer!: These steps are to give you an idea on the usual steps on flashing roms, I'm under no circumstance responsable for your actions, if you decide to follow these steps please make sure you read up on these and understand them before proceeding, you don't want to end up with a fancy paper weight

[Q] Which Rom to use?

Hi guys I have a HD2 (obviously says you's) that is locked to only installing Vodafone roms. Im stuck on rom 1.72 as Vodafone havent released any newer ones nor are they intending too!
I wanted to install hspl and install the newest htc stock rom. 3.03?
But I am aware that there is no hspl available that will allow you to do this.
So my question is, what is the newest Rom I can install that HSPL can do and where would I get it?
Thank you for your help
Mark
You can only install a stock Rom from your device.
This means if you have a branded device; you can only install stock rom this branded device.
BUT;
You have two solutions:
- Using a custom rom.
- Using the GoldCard solution/technique. in this case you can install stock rom 3.14
i'd suggest going for a custom ROM...the possibilities are endless, check out the ROM Dev. forum and pick the one that suits u best.
Hi thanks for your help. I'm trying the goldcard version now but need a little help please. When it says
1. Download your 3.14 Stock ROM from HTC, Links you will find here:XDA 623283
2. Extract your Stock ROM (RUU_Leo_S_HTC_XXX_3.14.XXX_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.1 5 .50.14_LEO_S_Ship.exe)
3. Copy RUU_signed.nbh to your Goldcard and rename it to LEOIMG.nbh
(Use the “Explore” Feature of ActiveSync / MobileDeviceCenter)
What escatly does it mean? I have downloaded the rom which has a the name
"_HTCHD2_RUU_Leo_S_HTC_WWE_3.14.405.2_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15.50.14_LEO_S_Ship"
What do I do to this now to extract it? When I double click on it it just opens the programme. Could someone help me please.
Thank you
Its ok I worked out how to extract the file thanks. Hopefully it works now
Its still not working.
When I turn the phone off after following all the steps and hold volume down and press power button the bootloader screen laods but it doesnt load the LEOIMG.nbh.
At the bottom it just says 'Serial'.
What am I doing wrong? I have followed all the instructions
Just a morning Bump
You most probably must Format your SD Card, but from my bitter experiance I would consider the steps very carefully before flashing from an SD Card,I was lucky to bring my HD2 back to life after a day of bicking it.
I myself installed the HSPL tried out many custom ROMS but so far couldnt find one without a bug,one thing I noticed common with all of them:my WIFI suffered badly that was my main reason to go back to the stock ROM,which has good WIFI reception now as my laptop!!.
Even the new Stock 3.14 reception was not up to my current one.
This is just my experiance.

[Q] Updating to ICS on a rooted S2 with a custom rom

Hi, I've flashed my S2 (Android 2.3.4) with litening rom (V2.0 XXKG1) a while back.
I've been wanting to root ICS on it with Odin (it's from the UK so I'd use the official firmware from Orange, if there's no better choice), but I'm afraid that since it contains a custom rom that was designed for gingerbread it might have some incompatibility issues.
Do I need to restore my phone to factory settings or can I just root ICS on top of what's already there?
Also, once I root the official new firmware will all those pesky stock apps from samsung come back?
Thanks for any help!
1) Follow whatever instructions the specific ICS rom has re: flashing it.
If it says it's OK to flash directly from GB, then go for it. If it says do something different, do that. If it doesn't mention flashing something else over the top of GB before flashing the ICS rom, I think you can pretty safely assume you don't need to (unless the dev of the ICS rom expects you to be a mind reader).
2) Re: restoring factory settings first, refer to 1 (but likely for most roms so you don't end up with a lot of FCs on system apps).
3) That will depend on whether the rom you flash has those pesky apps included and whether you need to do a factory reset/wipe or not (refer to 2; likely)
Hello,
I have flashed my SG S II with Lite'ning Rom v2.3 XWLP2. Previously i was on a gingerbread previous version of Lite'ning rom, which worked flawlesly for several months.
Everything seemed fine and i restored with Titanium only my missing apps+data (not the system data).
After a few hours, the phone started to at times not be able to see the sd card. More importantly, it would suddenly hung and reboot, appear to be working for a couple of minutes and reboot again. This would happen for 10 mins. Then without changing anything, everything would be normal again for 5-6 hours, after which rinse and repeat.....
Does anybody else have the same problem or did i do something wrong? Could anybody know if fs there anything i could do to fix it other than reflashing again?
Thanks in advance guys...
Factory reset in the first instance, then a reflash with a clean install of everything (No Ti restores).

So basically all I need is to flash a Rom that has been updated to ICS and it will update my phone too? I thought I needed to update the firmware and then flash a Rom
As I said yesterday, follow whatever specific instructions the rom you're wanting to flash has; for example, CM7 is pretty specific about having to flash the rom twice, CM9 requires a wipe/factory reset if you're coming from another rom.
Rom is another name for firmware.
Modem is separate, a few roms come with a modem & overwrite/replace your existing modem, most do not. Kernels are also included with pretty much all roms & will overwrite/replace your existing kernel.

Hmm I suspected that firmware was the same as Rom but wasn't sure, thanks again.
