Hi everyone,
I have root and the latest Modaco ROM which I'm well please with. However, I would like to be able to store apps on my SD card, am I right in thinking the latest ROM is embedded with this facility? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Am a Noobie, go easy with me.
Cheers
The Modaco Custom Rom (MCR 2.0) has inbuilt Auto Aps2SD, but it requires you to create an EXT3 Linux partition on your SD Card before you flash the Rom
There's an easy walkthrough here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4416361&postcount=117 with some methods of creating EXT3 Partition.

Thanks Dazy
Assuming to get to this stage I've already flashed the ROM.
I don't mean to be thick but when you say "before you flash the Rom" does that mean I need to reflash my ROM?
cheers
of course theres also the opportunity to have apps2sd (a2sd) without that modaco rom (fortunately)
just search a lil bit via google for a2sd and use the help Dayzee provided, thats really very easy!
greetz
thanks, i'll give it a shot
oh..........I am already using the new custom ROM which has the apps2sd inbuilt?
hi guys i have a hero on latest orange firmware and i would like to install this app so i can copy my apps to sd card instead of internal memory im running windows xp just to let you know
can i use a partition manager in windows to set up the card then install ap2sd and start moving the apps or do i have to do it a different way
if i can do it that way can someone point me in the right direction for a guide on how to do it
if not i will search for the link again about doing via cmd prompt
If you have the latest Orange firmware, from Orange, you will not be rooted. You will need to root your phone first. I'd be inclined to install a Modaco custom ROM anyway, since APPS2SD is built in.

Dave

i have already rooted my phone mate and what would be the advantage of installing modaco rom also all i want to do is install ap2sd, don't really want to brick the phone or break it in anyway and i don't know what guide to follow to flash with latest modaco rom
The advantage of going to the Modaco ROM is that Apps2SD is already built in. Couple it with Amon-Ra's recovery image, and you have everything you need to get your apps onto your SD card.
However, if you don't want to do this, you could try following this guide, though I couldn't tell if you it was 100% applicable for the Hero. Certainly the section concerning using JF's recovery terminal won't be applicable as the Hero doesn't have a hardware keyboard, so I guess you'll be taking the adb/fastboot route.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Dave
EDIT: Meant to say one last thing - which is the easiest route, Modaco ROM or "manual"? Modaco, by a country mile.
cheers mate whats the safest best way of doing it and what firmware/modem pack is best for uk orange also what is the apn settings for orange as i guess i will lose them after update
I believe that all the recent Modaco releases have the Orange APNs built in, though I could be wrong.
Assuming you already have a custom recovery image (Cyanogen, Amon-Ra etc), this post should give you what you need to go to the latest Modaco ROM. If you haven't already got a custom ROM image installed, do so, because you'll be able to Nandroid backup your exist ROM and roll back if necessary.
Personally, I'm still on Cyanogens recovery image because I really see no need to Apps2SD, but the Amon-Ra recovery image has been well received and can partition your SD card for you to get Apps2SD working.
Regards,
Dave
Agree with Foxmeister, using Modaco's custom ROM is by far the easiest way to do it.
I'm using the latest Modaco ROM V2.7.1 and it just works, it's fast reliable and you'll have a rooted phone that will allow you to do so much more in the long run.
I'm also using RA-HERO-v1.2.2 recovery console and you've got the option to move all apps + Dalvik-cache to the SD, partition your SD Card etc with a couple of key strokes. Couldn't be easier really.

APN Setting for Orange UK is OrangeInternet.
I'm using the Modaco custom ROM on Orange UK and haven't ever had to reset the APN settings even after a complete wipe of the phone.
I have a rooted CDMA Hero, with stock Rom software version 1.6. I have removed a lot of the apps that came on the phone by reading and learning here, thanks to everyone for that. I now want to install the AppsToSD 2 app, first off, I noticed it's no longer available in the Market, but anyway, I read here almost everywhere that one has to either install "the Dude's" or "JF 1.5" rom to get AppsToSD 2 to work. I have some terminal / linux command knowledge, which I used to root the phone, but I just want to know if with that knowledge, is it possible to install AppsToSD 2 on a STOCK rom like I have, and move the apps to the sd card? I just don't want to install a non-factory rom and modify the OS to that level, removing some stocks apps is one thing, but I don't want to go through the hassle and dangers of flashing a new rom. So is there any way I can still get AppsToSD to work with my stock Hero rom?
Thanks for any suggestions

sorry to rain on your parade, but it is possible, and not that hard.
boot the custom recovery image, partition your sdcard, move the apps to the ext partition, create the symlinks in /data and reboot. there you go, stock rom, stock recovery, apps on sdcard. works until you flash a new rom (which would delete the symlinks so you'd have to recreate them), but since you don't want to do that you are good to go.
My bad! Sorry! To my defense I have to say that someone told me it wasn't possible. I'll start double-checking my sources from now on.
Hello there
I'm reading here around the whole time about the things about rooting, custom roms and stuff. Since i've come yesterday to the Problem that
i've installed to much Applications and now have an 8 GB microSD Class 6 i wanted to put my Applications with App2SD onto my SD-Card.
As you might fear i want to ask how it will work, i've only found on the cdma-hero Section an how-to but since i have a gsm-hero i do not
want to brick it
Here are some Information about my Hero:
Firmware: 1.5
Baseband-Version: 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18
Kernel: 2.6.27-mck-teknologist-1.91 [email protected]
Build-Number: 2.73.405.5 146733 CL#61267 release-keys
Software-V: 1.0.0.A6288
i've already partitionated (is this the right spelling? Oo) my sd-Card with the RA-hero-1.5.3.1 Recovery IMG with the following Options:
swap: 512 MB
ext2: 512 MB
fat32 the rest of my 8 GB
After moving the apps and dalvik cache to sd i saw that i didn't had any applications so i have pulled out my nandroid backup which i made
before and now i have them back. And after that i've updated my RA-Hero REcovery Image to 1.6.2.
So how do i get App2SD working without installing a custom Rom?
Best Regards
Seelbreaker
Can I ask why you do not want to use a custom ROM?
What I suggest is you use MCR 3.2 using the link in my signature. Its very close to a stock ROM with a few tweaks for speed and stability.
And seeing that you already have the Amon Ra recovery it wont be difficult or time consuming.
Look up Titanium backup if you dont know what it is, use it to back up your apps and stuff to transfer onto MCR.
Found this... [Android] Apps2SD version 2.5... by doing a quick search, I think you would be able to put that on a pre-rooted stock ROM. You can get them from MoDaCo's Stock ROMs + radios in update.zip format for GSM Hero
Have a look around XDA for that APPS2SD application as you have to register at that other place for it.
Thank you ddotpatel for your response!
Well im just happy with the stock rom which i currently have and so far i didn't had any ambitions to use a custom rom. I've searched here around and found only app2sd in the hero-CDMA section:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670087&highlight=app2sd
currently trying to register on the page which gives the app2sd but the registration hates trash-mails -.-
I'm not sure but if I remember well, I had to put 0 MB for the swap

Indeed you are correct, swap should be 0 mb.
That Apps2SD *SHOULD* work on one of the pre-rooted stock ROMs but I cant be sure.
It does say
A2SD will not work on stock HTC Rom as stock roms do not have any method of launching A2SD in the boot image. Try one of the many custom roms available if you want to use A2SD.
but I think if you install one of the stock ROM update.zips through Amon-Ra it should be ok.
I dont really know. Sorry.
well then i have only 1 option waiting till 2.1 is out so that the devs could get the best out of the custom roms
I did the ExynosAbuse-v1.40 exploit, install Mobile Odin Lite, SiyahKernel v2.6.14, ClockworkMod Recovery, and install CM 10.1.3.
My first root and rom install and everything works great! Battery life went from one day to three and operating quickly.
Do I keep the files on my sd card or can i delete them?
For future installs and upgrades, is CWM recovery my primary means of install?
Thanks guys for your hard work. I really appreciate all you do and plan on donating to the cause.

"on my sd card"? You meant external uSD card or internal memory?
Either way, you can delete them if you won't ever need them again.
From this point on, any flashable zip file will be run using CwMR
Welcome @dave042,
-and congrats on a successful first root/ROM experience.
regarding the "files on the sd card", If we're ignoring the expansion slot, then there are files that apps use on the internal SD, so I wouldn't go deleting them at random. I'm sure that a google search will help you with which folders are needed, and which are not.
All future firmware installs should indeed happen from CWM recovery. Once you're rooted and kernel'd, there isn't any need for mobile ODIN. The options offered in CWM recovery are superior.
As you try new things, I do advise that you do some cleanup inbetween ROMS. Dirty flashes often lead to issues that people blame on the rom or kernel. factory resets only catch a portion of the critters. @mrcook has a few rom wipe scripts specifically for the i777 that have helped multiple people (myself included) out of weird phone issues that were the result of old-rom-junk not playing well with new-rom-junk.
Happy flashing
-Cyril
thanks votinh and Cyril for the quick response.
the SD card i was referring to was the external SD. i don't plan on installing too many roms but will make sure to do a complete wipe prior to any install.
was this process of installing ExynosAbuse-v1.40 exploit, install Mobile Odin Lite, SiyahKernel v2.6.14, ClockworkMod Recovery, to get me to root? and once to root, to install a rom?
another question, kernal and rom updates, are they independent of each other? can i update one without the other?
i understand roms are numerous and customized, what about the kernal? does changing the kernal make any significant changes to the operating system?
Gneerally on this device ROMS will come packaged with their own kernel. The kernel will be flashed when the rom is flashed. I do believe however that most install AJK after they flash their roms.
You can delete everything off your sd card. I do keep a known good rom as well as a copy of Siyah 4.3.3 kernel on my card at all times. You never know when something is going to mess with your phone, and you may have to re install a rom in order to make you phone function again. I would hate to be somewhere, my phone start a boot loop, and I am stuck without a phone. The Siyah 4.3.3 kernel comes in handy for me. Some roms will give you an error 7 when flashing. Rather than messing with editing the build prop I just flash Siyah, and try my rom again.
If you go flashing kernels make sure you have the proper kernel for your ROM.

ExynosAbuse-v1.40 exploit <-- tool to establish root-access to the device (framaroot is another useful, easy rooting tool for the i777)
Mobile Odin Lite <-- tool that uses root-access to install...
SiyahKernel vX.X.X <-- a custom kernel (one of many) installed primarily to provide cwm recovery, but are also commonly used to:
-provide additional functionality to the existing ROM
-backup your ROM install
-install a different ROM
-install a different kernel
-flash cleanup scripts
-and many many other things
As Butchr stated, the ROMs are usually packaged with their own kernels, so the kernel used above only remains in place until another ROM is flashed, which will overwrite the existing recovery with one specifically designed for the ROM flashed.
