Hello all,
I'm looking for some of one really missing functionality on android phones .
An iphonelike magnifier cursor tool !
I think everybody can see what I mean : you hold your finger on the text, then a magnifier bubble appears making easy and precise to move the cursor (or select) !
Strangely, the feature is available on recent htc (legend and others) but ONLY for rendered text and NOT for text fields ...
Nobody can make an app/service for that feature ?
I'm ready to pay for it ! (and I think I'm not the only one...)
please please please .
keep this topic up if you agree !
+1 that would be cool
I've wanted this since day one since I came from an iPhone 3g to android (n1)
i feel like this should be implemented into the OS... its the one thing android lacks, that and pinch zoom email
+1. I would love this too. Can someone here build it?

If you can't read the text, make it bigger in settings or put some glasses on.
It's not about seeing it's about the text selection / copy + paste. One thing iPhone definitely does better is copy + paste. I'm no fan boy (read my sig) but there is no denying the iPhone wins on this point. I would love this on my nexus one.
Yer copy is better any one fix

In that case +2.
Silly me.

On devices with a trackball or similar, you can use that to navigate text fields on character at a time.
Don't know what they do on devices without one.

yes I agree the track ball does work fine, but the magnification would work even better.

I don't know about other phones but Motorola Milestone XT720 got this function by default. Just press and hold for a while and the magnifier pop-up. It's very easy to set the cursor precisely where I want. Is that default in Eclare or only in this particular phone?

It is only for this particular phone I'm afraid ... I've never seen the feature on any android devices by now .
Except on HTCs but only for rendered text (not for text fields : sms etc) .
Can someone extract the feature from the XT720 ?

Just wondering why the font is so small. Coming from a L0Lphone Im used to the multitouch as I type and while I love the HTC IME, Id gladly have the MT capabilities.
I've tried and loved that keyboard on the nexus and it does work way better, font is legible. Wondering though, how do you benefit from multitouch? I type rather fast, I haven't noticed any difference.
with the HTC IME, the keys are responsive and dont lag, but I often move too quickly overlapping keypresses constantly. Without MT, the keys arent always recognized. While the font is legible, its freaking small and a pain if Im searching for a character I dont immediately know the location of on the KB.
Mostly Im wondering if there is anything we can do to make the font render properly
I agree it would be nice to have this working as it's one of the better free keyboards. I ultimately caved and purchased SmartKeyboard Pro. It's just as fast the as Droid X keyboard but with more features. The only thing that isn't quite as good is auto-correction but its still better then the stock keyboard for that.
Yeah, the droid KB is the best out, but I was wrecking my eyes trying to read the symbols.
I'm using the HTC IME Keyboard, which is much slower than my fingers and fumbles text quite a bit. I'll deal with the annoyance just to keep my eyes in good condition.
The keyboard has mutlitouch. Press and hold a key the press a second key. They both register the touch.

Instead of everyone else in this thread who just completely ignored your question, I have to agree with you. I'm trying to get the thing to work by just editing the .xml files in the .apk, but it's much more difficult than I first thought. I will get back to you if i make any progress.

I have no idea whether this works or not but the people at this blog got it to work on the Samsung Galaxy S so it might work on the Vibrant. Check it out:
Code:
megaupload. com/?d=8BWYGDTQ
I'm not allowed to post links so I placed a space between the download link so remove that and you should be good to go.
Here is the website where I found the download link:
Code:

Here is a video showing the keyboard (check at 3:17):
Code:
youtube.com/ watch?v=47T3MGcygJA
boo, still doesnt work. Small letters for the lose
I'm more interested in the EVO's keyboard. It has the arrows right there on the keyboard. Coming from a G1 with a trackball, I find it hard to tap between the letters where I have to fix my error (or autocorrect's error). I know the HTC_IME mod has the option to use the volume rocker as left/right movement, but those aren't the easiest to push when typing in landscape.
you guys do realize that the Samsung keyboard included with the phone is multi touch right?
It's a nit pick, but I don't like the Samsung kb auto correct bubble popping up and down all the time ha-ha

I saw multitouch . In the past I thought it referrred to browsers . Now I see it in the same sentence as keyboards. so I was confused and didn't know how to ask. U can PM me the answer if you like
I shake a lot, Maybe terets, so I like speech functiion of the HTC but I really liked the Nexus Keyboard. Any recommendations
but like I said, I am not a developer I could not express it. You can delete it. IF you wanna pm me, I would love it
I like having hepatic feedback, but not vibrate on my keyboard. That's why the Samsung one is a no go
Here is the DroidX Multi-Touch Keyboard Port that works on the vibrant, just tested it

Nice fine.
But, question.
The keys are super tiny. compared to the IME-HTC (EVO keyboard) and the default samsung.
What makes this soo good?
Sorry i am quite new to all this.
Thanks will try it tonight. *Update* Letters are way to small
Really small font on keys
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yea. thats what i said
Im curious as to why this is soo good whats the main KILLER feature? Ive been hearing alot about this keyboard.
its worked on the vibrant for awhile now, the font is way too tiny on the keys.
Id be interested in finding out why, but I dont have the knowledge to do so.
One of the main features is true multi touch, which on our screen will allow for significant error correction when typing.
This works perfectly on the I9000. Samsung keyboard has multi-touch too, I don't know what all the fuss about Droid X's multi-touch keypad is. But Droid X keypad certainly has MUCH better auto correction. That's why I use this.
okay so lets see. it's been confirmed many times it works right on the i9000, but doesn't work right on stock or rooted vibrant firmware. Meanwhile, the file in question hasn't been changed (other than being hosted on mediafire, which is something to be careful of sometimes).
So why is this being reposted here when even the op confirms that it shouldn't be?

Will it recognize both keystrokes based on when you remove your finger from each one is the best indicator.
And to respond to the Samsung KB comment, I think its auto correct is just rubbish which is why I dont use it. I have to fight the KB's piss poor prediction more than the HTC's KB's lack of MT bothers me.
I really like how the Droid X KB feels when I type with it, and its auto predict feels as good if not better than stock Android. I just need the bloody font to be larger on the keys
Better Keyboard from the market is true multi-touch. I'm using it now.

You can't, unless you disable haptic feedback all together, which turns off vibrate on the home keys as well, under settings and then sound.
Droid x keyboard was always my favorite, can't use it with tiny font though. Why? Not because of multitouch, but because of How it looks and feels, very easy to type fast on it.

Hello Fascinate Community,
I'm new to the development scene and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about creating or modifying/altering ROMs. Specifically, I'm interested in modifying the Fascinate TouchWiz stock. Maybe I'm the only person in the world, but I kind of like the TW interface and don't care to replace it with a 3rd party launcher (I did use and like LauncherPro Plus on the Droid 1/2, just enjoying something different).
At any rate, I had some ideas that I thought would be really cool to integrate with the existing TouchWiz interface and I thought that I would share them in the event someone figures out how to incorporate them.
I also thought this might be a good way to consolidate ideas the community at large might have for upcoming ROMs, but lack the know-how to implement:
1) Similar to the control toggles in the notification bar, implement forward/back and play/pause controls for the music player
2) Rescript the default Car Home app to use Google Navigation / Google Voice Search
3) Add music controls to the bottom of the default Car Home app
4) Replace all the Bingification with Google (obviously)
5) have the soft keys stay on while screen is on
hope to see CM6 on here loved it on my eris

I know there are people working on this already, I really hope it makes it into the first series of ROMs.
7) Add a setting that allows you to enable/disable the "signal lost/found" audio alert.
8) (No-brainer - not even sure it warrants mentioning) Use a different file system (ext4?) to eliminate need for lag-fix.

so far i think i might have the best ROM idea of them all, One that doesnt have the memory hog TouchWiz!!! yeah!!! sorry guys have to, cant wait to start seeing stuff flowing out of this section!
Rom Idea:
2.2 Froyo
and the ability to use the touchwiz widgets. I really like them over HTC Sense.
Thats the only reason I wont use launcherPro....Official widgets from the manufacturer look so much better than aftermarket ones!!!

hey guys, the textbox is wayy to big, especially in facebook and the default messaging app, you can barely see 4 lines of writing while the text box is up, the screen is almost double the iphones and the iphone had a better messaging experience IMO, is there any way to make it smaller??
None that I know of. Its annoying too that in landscape, when you sue the Samsung keyboard, in fact most keyboards bar swype, you only see about half a line of the box. Major bug imo.
No, it's not a bug. A bug is something that is not working. This is simply bad design...

Oook, I'll be constructive then:
What you call a bug is a design feature. There are people with accessibility problems that require larger fonts to be able to operate the phone and see what they are writing. Then, there are people with better sight (even able to see the subpixels in the SGS2 screen!) Now, the latter can use a keyboard designed for the former, but the contrary isn't true. So unless you want to alienate part of your user base, you tend to cater to the needs of the first group.
Ideally it would be configurable, but alas, it is not (Samsung did not invest more resources on it).
That said, SGS2 is not an iOS device (luckily!) so you can install an alternate keyboard from a quite large range. I don't have first hand experience with them, but you may want to try:
8pen
SlideIt
SwiftKey
Graffitti
or the Swype that comes with the phone.
I haven't tested those on the SGS2, and I'm having it replaced so I can't right now (I'm stuck with my ages old HTC touch). Hopefully it'll be back by the end of the week and I can tell you if the message box is smaller, but you can download them from the market and see if they fit you without any wait, anyhow.
the text box stays the same in EVERYTHING, which is damn annoying! and no keyboard changes the text box size can you replace the default messaging box? or ui?
Hi all,
I use the official gingerbread keyboard and it works perfectly for me.
With it you can see more lines than the default samsung keyborad.
See the attached files
Swype works fine but probably because it has a pop up box for corrections.

Hello fellow Arc owners.
I have a quick question for you all.
What do you wish your handset could do that it can't?
Something you've always wanted to be able to do with your phone but has never happened, no-one's ever found a way.
Whatever this something is, it has to be possible to do by way of an app - so no super-high-res screens, batteries that last a year on a single charge or anything else hardware related, we're just talking software.
And I'm not talking an updated GingerBreak or something like that. I mean a proper, legit, above board idea.
I'd love to hear any/all sensible ideas, thanks.
NB: I'm not looking to steal anyone's ideas, if you've got a plan for the next killer app then go for it and I wish you all the best.
I'm just trying to find out if there's a niche out there that could be filled...
Im thinking......facial or thumb print unlock screens.....no idea why though.

Thumb print.. won't be feasible on current screens
And facial.. would take too long compared to swiping ?
A snap shot feature would be nice like a system restore. I know there are way to do it in Recovery but it would be nice to have a application within Stock ROM because Recovery is not available within Stock we need to Flash the custom ROM like CM for it.
A better (and free) lock screen could be good ! ..
I used to love how I could use the iPhone/iPod as a touchpad to control the mouse on the computer. Something similar for the arc would be a good idea. Should be graphically pleasing though.
I love to be able to use the camera button unlock the phone directly to the camera app, by long pressing it, so it doesn't happen by mistake. And when you turn off the screen or press the back button it would go back to being locked.

As mentioned, finger prints would require different hardware.
Facial recognition is simply fraught with too many problems to be practical.

Really !! You know how to create a snapshot? Or access it?
Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread Allows Screenshots Without Rooting
Don't know anything more about it though, sorry.
Sorry I think you got me wrong ...! Snapshot i meant a complete image of the system so we can restore it back to previous state. Let's say if something screws up we can restore the image
Right, ok.
I thought you had made two suggestions - screenshots being one and backups being the other.
I could be wrong but I'm not sure that's possible to do unless you're in recovery. I have a feeling that it's only possible to copy certain parts of the OS when it's not running.
As I say, I could be completely wrong but I can't help but feel that there's a reason why recovery is needed to made Nandroid backups.
May be I want to capture video of the activities I do on my device (just like capturing screenshot)...
Though m not sure if its achievable or not!!!
