Use any of the custom ROMs that specify they have ROOT ACCESS in the description. Dont waste you time with the official one.

ok thanks.
but are they all basically the official 2.1 with root access ?

Only the newer ones since yesterday. They should specify if they are built using the GSM release or the Legend / Eris leaks.

one other thing. I can't get mobile network to turn on with the official 2.1 ROM. As such, I can't download MMS, and MMSZap doesn't seem to be working.

Have you checked your APN settings. Settings -> Wireless -> Mobile Networks -> Access point names.

ok i manually entered the apn settings for my provider. guess mmszap 2.0 doesn't work on hero rom because it was built for the leaked eris roms.
thanks for the helps

Replacement Phone

I had a older rom version on my Verizon XV6800, I was able to get gps working by following this link: http://www.phonenews.com/how-to-add-gps-to-htc-mogul-xv6800-p4000-titan-2663/ but it stop vibrating, it would only ring. I Took it the tech support, they determined I needed a replacement phone. I got a replacement phone with the following specs:
Windows Mobile 6.1
ROM version: 3.57.605.1
Rom Date 7/21/08
Radio Version: 3.37.75
Should I following this: http://www.phonenews.com/how-to-add-gps-to-htc-mogul-xv6800-p4000-titan-2663/ to get my GPS working again or is there another method since this ROM is a new version
You have 2 choices, search for the thread in using gps with MR1, or flash it back to an older Verizon stock rom with Windows Mobile 6.0 and then follow the normal flashing thread to get it up to a custom 6.1 rom. The problem is MR1 disables GPS except for their own GPS app or the Valhala server that someone wrote.
Honestly I think it's best that you flash back to 6.0 and then upgrade normally thru the custom route so that more GPS tools work without running a 3rd party app.

Do u kno where I can find the thread to go back to original rom?
try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-376873.html http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376873
good think is before flashing stock rom ,activate different phone then flash
after you done reactivate PDA so you dont have to call verizon to get a A-KEY
Why do you recommend to activate a different phone? I did not need a new a key when I went from MR1 to old stock version then to DCD.
when i flashed mine to old rom then dcd's first what i did. flashed bootloader ,radio rom ,and dcd's rom .using RUU via USB cable and i lost A-key .
i did not use SD card method

Hey Billy do u have walk thru for flashin back to 6.0 and then upgrading normally
Actually I don't have a Verizon phone, I only know what I stated based on other threads I have read.
I would check HTC's website, they may have an older stock rom listed still. If not, then I'm sure there is a Wiki on here somewhere with links to older roms.
As far as ability to flash, you may need to relock the phone first, I would wait for some other wiser VZW user to respond.

Searching found this link very easily.
Thank u sir
I unlock the device, flash a custom ROM and upgrade to a Sprint radio that will allow GPS..Took a while but Gps is now working. Now I need to get my picture messaging to work now. Any tips?

<REQUEST TO MODERATORS>
Hey all, can anyone update the Verizon aGPS fix article in the wiki to include this info? A lot of people see the links that send them to the wiki for the fix (having MR1 already on their phone, updated or bought that way) and the fix doesn't work (FRUSTRATING). It would save so much trouble if there was 1 line that said "If you have MR1 installed and want to upgrade to a custom rom w/GPS, downgrade to (link to original rom) and then upgrade to your choice." Apparently that is a big problem people run into (me included) and so much frustration would be avoided (as well as so much posting space). So, can anyone add/change that for us?

Forthcoming T-Mobile G2 / HTC Hero 2.1 update in Europe

Hello,
I rooted my phone this week. T-Mobile in my country never provided an update for my T-Mobile G2. So my phone still runs on build 1.76.110.6.
I'm consider to install a custom ROM, because this firmware is really slow :-(
But If I will wait a few weeks and T-Mobile provides the 2.1 update this time, will I still have root access after the OTA update? Or will I lose the root access?
Are there any good and stable, full hardware supported custom ROMs with Android 2.1?
Or what's the best custom ROM at the moment for the HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2?

1. There is an update for T-mobile - have you ever checked the HTC support page? It is still v1.5 but its an update... (will remove root)
2. 2.1 is unlikely to be released by t-mobile in the next couple of weeks, you're probably be looking at a month or so and I also don't think OTA updates are supported on your current build. Also you will NOT have root and probably won't be able to easily downgrade again to gain root access.
3. There are lots of custom roms try reading the hundreds of other posts asking which 2.1 update to use. They are all about the same stability wise and realistically speed wise too, though some vary to a very minor degree.
How exactly did you get root in the first place? Or are you talking about a recovery image installed?

1) I couldn't download the official update from the HTC website, because you have to provide your serial number. And with my number I'm not allowed to download the update. Because I own an T-Mobile G2 instead of the "real" HTC Hero
2) If I install the latest update from T-Mobile/HTC I lose my root access and it could be hard to get it back again :-( That's bad
To get root on my phone I followed this tutorial:
phandroid.com/2009/08/04/how-to-gain-root-access-on-your-htc-hero/
(there are other similar tutorials out there)

Have you contacted them about this? The G2 is just a brand name, they are exactly the same phones as the Hero's and T-mobile doesn't actually sell any "Hero" phones just the G2. Therefore, that update is definitely for you.
Alternatively you could install the update using the exe found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559622
Once again bear in mind that this wipes your data and will remove root and you may have a hard time getting it back.

Yes I contacted HTC and the answer was that I had to contact T-Mobile in my country. They told me that I lose the warranty if I install a update from the internet, because THEY didn't provide it.
But in other countries (e.g: Germany) T-Mobile provides this update.
So what should I do now? What's the best solution? Install an official HTC update and lose root access or install on of the custom ROMs out there?

2.1 ROM, super duper quick, backup your apps via titanium back, then restore once you have flashed the new ROM. Maybe a good idea to backup messages etc if you want them

Should I install Nandroid before flashing?
At the moment I "only" have root access and not installed any additional boot loader or other software/firmware.
Would like to try your suggested ROM (Cronos Droid Version 1.3). Do I have to wipe my sd card to install this ROM?
And do you run the Non Overclocked or the Overclocked version?

Live wallpaper

I updated the phone to 2.1... but I did not find the option for the live wallpaper ... searching i read that even for the sprint hero have been added! do you know something?
Hit menu -> wallpaper -> Live wallpaper?
What rom are you using?
Try a custom rom like VanillaEclair or VillianRom?
Right firstly I am assuming you have installed the official 2.1 rom, if so well done you have now lost the ability to root..
Now for more bad news for you (if the above is true).
Live wallpapers are not officially on the htc hero, they are not included in the 2.1 official build and never will be.
You would have to install a 2.1 custom rom to get them.
Which brings me back to my first point, if you have installed the official update then you now have a locked bootloader so can't root, therefore can't get custom goodies like livewallpaper.
Plenty of warnings went out on this site for the last how ever many months.
Offtopic: Post 1500
Within a week or two someone will have found a way to root the official 2.1 after it has been installed, or some method to downgrde the rom to a state where one can flash a custom rom.
I wouldn't be too scared that you are stuck without root forever.
make a goldcard and downgrade using a RUU, then flash recovery, and do ota manually, then you can flash roms easily
just downgrade to 1.5 with the ruu.. thats working from the official 2.1 and there you got your option to install rooted 2.1 and then maybe someone will pull of an update.zip with live wallpapers

[Q] Any custom ROMs for Motorola XT800?

I was disappointed that CyanogenMod doesn't list my phone as supported.
I've searched this forum for any other custom ROMs for my Motorola XT800 and didn't see any specifically listed.
I've got 2.1 installed, and want to install a ROM with 2.2, but before I root my phone, I'd like to know what my options are for custom ROMs that I can use.
This is a dual SIM phone purchased in China that I use with China Mobile GSM and China Telecom CDMA. Awesome phone btw, except for not having the Android Market app installed and China Telecom's not releasing an update to FroYo yet...

Alternative ROMs for xt800
Hi there,
I really would like to find a custom ROM for the xt800 (currently running 2.1), so that I can upgrade to at least Froyo, which I hope has better Microsoft exchange integration (I know, its a terrible reason). It is a dual SIM CDMA EVDO and GSM device.
I have rooted the device using Androot, which worked well (though I did have to press root twice). ROM manager is not available in the market, which makes me think that it won't work with my device. Is there an alternative to ROM manager / clockworkmod for the xt800, that I could use to search for and install ROMs?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

[Q] Some questions on Viper3D rom for GSM EVO3D

Hey guys
I've just recently unlocked my bootloader for my evo3D so I'm kinda new to all this rom flashing business but seeing as how the custom roms here thrash the stock ICS OTA update, I figured I might as well have a go at getting a new rom.
I downloaded the Viper3D ROM from this link on XDA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1991150
Supposedly it was the 1.6.3 version but when i installed using 4EXT aroma said it was 1.0.0? Looking at the software information, it also seemed that the version i was running was the 1.0.0 version of the ROM. Additionally, after installation, my mobile network was disconnected. I cant turn it on no matter what i do.
After searching around for the latest version of the ROM, i read some forum about the r284/r310/r330 versions, which was the updated versions of the ROM. However, I cant seem to find a download link for them? Also, doing a software check via the settings app does nothing. All it says is that my phone is up to date.
I'm pretty stuck here guys. The ROM is awesome and all, just that I cant seem to dl the latest version and my mobile network aint connected. Any way i can fix this?
Thanks!
anyone?
