noob questions (upgrading) - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I've done tons of Windows mobile upgrades in the past but despite reading through the posts on here, I'm still stuck.
1) I have a HTC Hero (UK Vodafone with the original rom) and want to upgrade to 2.1 in the quickest / smoothest way
2) I'm not bothered about keeping anything at all on the phone
3) Can I use one of official HTC 2.1 roms? If so, will that be easier? i.e. will I need 'rooted' ROMS etc?
Many thanks

If you are remotely interested in rooting or using custom software, then DON'T TOUCH OFFICIAL UPDATES. If you install an official HTC update, you won't be able to root again.
TBH, you are better installing a rooted custom ROM. If you choose to go down this route, you have come to the right place.
In terms of ROMs which are very close to the official HTC update (ie. have HTC Sense), take a look at (in no particular order, all are pretty similar)
VillainROM 10.2
Cronos 1.x (can't remember what is latest version)
42Turkey's ROM
Modaco Custom ROM 4.0
etc.
or just browse round the site till something takes your fancy.

Thread moved to Q&A.

and use BTDAG's guide linked in my signature for step by step instructions on how to do it.

Many thanks for all your help.
I followed it to the letter (using gold card method)
and it worked a treat.
Used Villain Rom in the end.
I've flashed loads of windows mobiles and iphones before but never an android device. This was my boss's phone so was a bit nervous.
It's certainly more complicated than flashing windows or iphones but just as satisfying!
Cheers

Now you'v done the hard leg work it'l be much easier for your boss from now on.

New owner of HTC Hero with a couple of questions

Hi,
I just bought an HTC Hero off eBay today (still waiting for it) and it comes from T-Mobile but it's unlocked. However, I'm looking at debranding the phone and I want to install the original HTC ROM's instead of T-Mobile's.
I've been reading these forums and there are original HTC ROM's, original HTC but rooted ROM's, custom ROM's and etc... I'm not interested in the custom ones at the moment, I just want to get the original stuff for now, but without the T-Mobile branding. Also, this way, I can always be updated with the latest changes from HTC.
As far as I understand this, I'll have to root it at least once to install a new ROM right? And after that, maybe I should install the generic but rooted HTC ROM so that in the future I have the phone rooted already and everything's easier, correct? Is this the recommend approach or should I install the latest original and untouched HTC ROM?
For now I don't see many benefits from rooting the phone, and I think I just want to make things easier by using the original HTC ROM so that in the future I can use HTC own utilities (RUU I believe) to update the phone. In other others, I'm waiting eagerly for HTC update with Android 2.0 and I just want be able to install it directly from HTC when it comes out. I'll deal with rooting and custom firmwares later if I really see the need.
So, what's the best procedure to install the latest generic HTC ROM?

I'm not sure you posted in the right thread...
Can anyone give me some hints?

Stupid question?

Hi all
I'm a complete newbie to the Android, but in the four weeks I've had the HTC Hero, I've set up email, downloaded loads of apps etc, but I've started to notice some problems.
I was advised to upgrade from Android 1.5 to Android 1.6 ahead of the upcoming release of 2.1, but I want to backup all my apps, email settings, messages, etc. so I don't have to start again after the upgrade.
I've been reading through the forums for a few days, and can't find a simple guide. I've found a lot about "root" but nothing about what root is! (As I said, I'm a complete newbie)
Any chance someone could post an idiots guide?
Many thanks
You know...The problem doesn't even exist!! Are you happier than before huh? ...Why? What? Didn't you know? F***ing HTC won't release ANY 2.1 update for our Heroes until 26th of April! Oh sure, you could upgrade to 1.6 but....NO! You can't! Because HTC has decided that 1.6 upgrade will never be released! Oooorrr...You could read some guide about "rooting" your Hero and installing a custom rom This is the best and quickest way to get 2.1 features without waiting for official HTC upgrade. Even because when the new firmware will be released maybe there won't be the possibility of rooting again the phone! So you're forced to use stock rom! And if you don't like it...Well...go to hell! XD (By HTC, not by me obviously...). I can only suggest you some "short" readings and a particular 2.1 rom:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superuser (aka root user)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654030 (The most stable and fastest 2.1 rom at the moment)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124 (The most powerful and friendly modded recovery)
So read, read and read! Then, when you think you're ready, try to root your Hero, if you're not able to do it maybe you've got a perfect SPL...But this is another story...
Oh..and (google)search, (google)search, (google)search //A sort of casting....
+1 MARDURHACK.
A few more things here,...
Have a read of What Can I Do With Root - INFO
Then check out [Guide] Newbie Guide to Install a Custom Rom
....Then when you get to the bit about installing your custom ROM, use the link that MARDURHACK provided if you want to try out a 2.1 ROM. Or you can have a look at the other ROMs available in the development section here at XDA.
I had my Hero for about 3 weeks but wanted a 100% stable ROM, so have opted for the MODACO 3.2 ROM. It is Android 1.5, not 2.1. You can get that from HTC Hero section @ MoDaCo.com
.... I can confirm, its the dogs bollocks!

New to the site, need some help/advice

Ok guys
i have a hero and i absolutely love it, but after following HTC on twitter eagerly awaiting news on the official 2.1 rom i am now considering installing one of the custom roms i have seen here
Like i say im a newb to all this, i have been reading on this forum for some time but this is one of my first posts. Basically i want to know how i go about installing a custom rom
My handset is a Tmobile G2 touch from the UK
do i need to root? what is the best way/easiest way? can this be reversed to use an official rom in the future?
and which rom is universally known as the best most stable, and again how do i go about installing this, and again is it reversible
and lastly what are the risks?
alot of questions, but i will appreciate any help anyone has to offer
many thanks in advamce

This should probably have been in the Q&A section...
1. Read my newbie guide on installing a custom rom (covers pretty much everything and if it doesn't ask and i'll add it in)
2. Root is a part of most custom ROM's, you can enable root without putting a custom rom on but it isn't usually worth it
3. Again my guide, or various others are available on the forums
4. Yes it can be reversed, just run an official rru exe from HTC and you'll go back to the way things are
5. This is more down to personal preference.
For Sense you have:
VillainROM (probably most used)
SenseHero
NeoROM
HeroDroid
Legendroid
Raidroid
For Vanilla you have:
aHero
Androbin
VanillaEclair
Vanillain 2.0 (not recommended)
and many others - again check the forums / wiki for details
6. Hehe what risks...
Seriously though:
You can brick your phone (very unlikely), if you're an idiot... (read everything until you understand it and think about what your doing before you click the button)
You can get stuck in boot loops, which are usually recoverable if you just wipe & flash again
You lose your data (sms etc) if it isn't backed up (i'm still working on a complete backup guide)
You might end up with a really pretty Hero v2.1 which is about as slow as 1.5 but you feel better about it cause it looks nice...
Hope this helps
i'd recommend flashing the mr bang 1.5 first before any 2.1s; see exactly how well your hero can perform. the danger is that (like me) that none of the 2.1s really come close, so you're measuring up the 2.1 benefits against performance, and the 2.1 benefits are pretty much limited to:
- icons in the settings menu (nice)
- 3d gallery (nice but can be sluggish)
- live wallpapers (nice for 5 minutes then :yawn
- you have to really EARN that gps lock.
flashing is fun though. get 'sms backup & restore' and pay for titanium backup & make sure you use nandroid backup. you can try a rom & have it running in 20 mins, give it 30 mins to impress you or nandroid restore back & your phone is how it was before an hour has passed.

Rom upgrade for vodafone HTC Hero question

Hi,
I have done loads of windows mobile rom upgrades in the past, however I would like to upgrade a colleague's HTC Hero rom to Andriod version 2.1 (one of the first Heros and is on Vodafone).
1) Do you know if there is an official upgrade for this now?
2) If not, is there a reliable unofficial upgrade I can do to get this to Andriod 2.1 ? If so which Rom would you recommend.
3) What guides should I use?
Obviously I expect to use HTC sync to back everything up first etc.
Many thanks
There is no official 2.1 release for the HTC Hero, check the sticky at the top of the forum.
Are you familiar with rooting? If so, you have a few very good 2.1 ROMS that work, although come with bugs.
Many thanks for your response.
I'm not familiar with rooting on the android, do you have any links / guides on how to upgrade?
Also, what bugs come with the upgrade, anything that would make it not worthwhile?
Thankss

I can't take THAT long anymore.

Follow BTDAG's guide linked in my signature,... It has all the info a beginner could ever need.
There are a few good 2.1 ROMs available now,... and many more will come in the next week or two.
I can only personally recommend Villain6 and VillianSlide as they are the only two i have played with.... But have also heard very good things about RADUG's Vanilla Eclair, and ROBIN04's AOSP ANDROBIN. But i'd hold of testing ROBIN04's until he has implemented a new kernal, cant be a long wait for that though.
Cool,
I'm going to upgrade tomorrow.
Are there any good backup tools to backup ur emails, settings and text messages then I can restore to the new 2.1 version?
Thanks

[Q] Advice on the correct procedure for rooting my HTC Hero (2.1)?

Hi,
Apologies if I am repeating a question already answered before - I have been reading the forums but I couldn't find my answer.
I bought a HTC Hero that was upgraded before I received it to Android 2.1. I believe I am running an official HTC 2.1 ROM from Taiwan - the "Software number" is 3.31.751.1 and the "Firmware version" is 2.1-update1. I have seen guides for rooting HTC Hero phones running 2.1, but I have also read stuff about how it is hard or impossible to root a 2.1 phone because the firmware is patched or something? The rooting guidesI have seen (theunlockr, rootmydroid) make it clear that there is a different process depending on whether your phone was updated to 2.1 OTA or using a RUU. I am not sure which was the case with my phone, though I could maybe find out. Which guide should I follow for my phone?
Thanks in advance.
James.

Hi James,
The guide in the development forum (the one that's sticked) works fine, regardless of how you updated to 2.1, and is pretty easy. Takes about 10 minutes for a lot of people
Thanks very much for the response. Seems like this method will allow me to do a Nandroid backup of my current phone setup before I flash any custom ROMs. That makes me feel better than having to downgrade to 1.5 or something first. I'm nervous about messing with this stuff
