Update: TexTab has been released in the market! Thanks to everyone who participated in the beta. Download links:
- Full Version
- Lite Version
TexTab is an SMS app for Android tablets. It allows you to connect your Android 2.1+ tablet to your Android 2.1+ phone over Bluetooth and send/receive SMS messages on your tablet as if you were sending them from your phone.
I've been working on this app for some time now and I feel that it is ready for public beta testing. I encourage everybody to download and install the app on both your phone and tablet, and please provide feedback here.
App Features:
- Honeycomb optimized, though not required
- Push menu button to connect devices via bluetooth, with option to select a device to automatically connect to in settings
- Conversation threads use your Google contact information to display contact info
- Widget with button to enable/disable service, and displays connection information
Known Bugs:
- Messages not saving to outbox on some devices
- Sometimes unable to connect from one device. Seems to fix after turning bluetooth off then on, on OTHER device.
- Delivery reports are not always reliable, when messages are sent or received very quickly
- Visual issues/ghosting when using Swype keyboard in portrait orientation
- Performance issues on Samsung Galaxy Tab 7"
Future Development/Requested Features:
- New layout for 7" tablets
- Wifi functionality for increased range
- UI improvements
- Option to sync contacts with phone rather than cloud
- Sync sms history with phone
- Option to mute phone notifications
- Mark incoming messages as "read" on phone
- Popup dialog on received message when app is not in foreground
- MMS support
- Ability to use existing SMS app (GoSMS, Handcent, etc) to send/receive messages on ANOTHER phone
- suggestions?
Installation and Use:
Download the attached zip file and extract it somewhere on your computer. Copy the extracted file, TexTab.apk, onto both of your devices. Find the .apk file using File Manager or your favourite file browser and run it on both devices to install. Once installed, you can access it like any other app, and you can long-press on the homescreen to add the widget.
Once in the app, push the menu button to connect to a paired bluetooth device. If your devices are not paired, simply make one of them discoverable using Menu Button > Make Discoverable and then on the other device use Menu Button > Connect a Device > Scan for Devices to pair the two devices and establish a connection.
Once a connection is established, the devices should show their proper views. If not, click the settings button and change the Device Type. Under settings, you can also select the option to automatically connect to a paired device on startup. You can also enable or disable the bluetooth service under settings, or by using the button on the widget.
To send a message, either type a phone number into the Phone Number... field, or tap the Send To... button to choose a contact from the cloud. Type the message in the Enter a Message... field and tap send. Received messages will automatically show up as long as the app is enabled.
I look forward to any feedback/bug reports/praise/insults you may have!
Changelog:
See attached text file
This sounds awesome! Thanks a lot man.
Could you maybe throw up some instructions for everyone...
Edit: works great so far. Looking foward to the updates!
I updated the OP with installation and usage instructions. Let me know if they're not clear!
Cant wait to give this a try! Awesome
Will deffinately try this, sounds like what I've been looking for!
You say Future Development for WiFi, 2 ways I could suggest to have that.
1) If the tab is tethered to the phone for data (this is how I get my WiFi only tab to have data at work)
2) If they are on the same WiFi network, say I'm at home. Phone is connected to home WiFi and tab is connected to home WiFi.
Just some thoughts
*Edit*
Ok, tried it out and thats pretty cool! I like how the message shows up on the phone and the tab. Is there a way to pull down recient conversations (say from the last 24 hours) incase you wanted to continue a previous conversation? Also, if read on the tab or phone, could it show read on the other device?

This is exactly how the wifi support will work. It will still require the connect to device step, but the range will be limited by your wifi network rather than your phones bluetooth signal.

I've toyed with the idea of syncing sms history with a contact, unfortunately though any operations which involve using sms history are unsupported in the Android SDK and could break my app in the future. Marking a message as read is subject to the same problem. I'll look into it some more.
I appreciate the feedback, keep it coming!
I wanna suggest something, look at the app called texter, and the chrome app, then take a look have they work. They work by signing in on your google account on an app on the android phone, and the signing in at the same account on chrome, npw you can sms from chrome throw your phone and recive them, no matter where your phone is, it just need 3g connetion. This is like chrometophone. If you could get it working in this way it would be awsome! And the ofc still the bluetooth or something other when the tab not have internet connection
Loving this app so far, just wanted to report a bug. When a new contact sends a text, it seems to duplicate the view of prior conversations. I have one conversation that's up to three alternate views!
Edit: After a reboot, the duplicates disappeared.

Thanks, added it to the list. As a temporary fix, tapping the settings button and then tapping back will reload the contacts list and they should disappear.
Also I can't seem to delete conversations by long pressing. Is there another way?
I haven't implemented this. I'll consider it a feature suggestion! Are you wanting to delete specific messages within a thread, or whole thread for a contact?
I was actually working on something exactly like this. I did not end up getting much work done though. If you would like any help, just let me know.
Dude, your App is awesome ! ive searched for days for something like this. the only other option is syncsms and that one doesnt support "push", only "all 5 min sync". But your solution via bluetooth is just awesome
ive allready installed it on 5 different transformers for my friends. we are all very happy and would like to donate for your work.
As soon as your App is final, you should totaly put it on market for 1-2$ or more. you will be rich buddy !
Greetings from Germany, keep up the good work. ive allready bookmarked your thread =)
PS: Could you implement the function to mute the notification sound?

I won't name any names, but there is at least one other implementation of this idea. My app goes about it a little bit differently.

Just a contact thread. Specific messages would be a good option if you want this to be a full fledged texting app, but then the deletion wouldn't propogate to the phone without some magic. If this app is intended to be a messenger though, an extension of the phone when the tablet just so happens to be around, I'd like the ability to keep that interface clean and current so its not bogged down with out of date texts.
Edit: Keeping with the 'extension of the phone' idea, you could have an option to clear the text database after a certain amount of time disconnected from a device.
a friend of mine just told me that his phone is acting wierd.
he installed the app and send me 5 texts over his pad and i got them all. but his phone wont show what he wrote and in his phone there are only the sms from me and not his. we both use the lg optimus 2x.
and also his phone send 2 sms to the number "555555555" with text "default body". right after he installed the app and tried to send texts over his pad.
any idea?

I have an idea about what's happening here. As I mentioned in an earlier post, any operations that involve your phones SMS history are unsupported in the Android SDK. It sounds like your particular phone model doesn't access SMS history in the same way as other phones, so the app is unable to save sent messages in your phones SMS history.
The number "5555555555" and "default body" are used when there is a problem saving the data to your phone. The phone was told that a message was sent to that number; but no SMS was actually sent.
I'll try and find a workaround for this phone.
Do other people using this phone model have the same problem? Or any other LG phone?
No one else have that issue.
we both use the same lg and we both use a modaco rom. the only difference is, iam using modaco version ~16 and he version ~19. so the problem should lie in the difference of that roms. he just got furios because he tought the app had send 2 sms to a pricy number...
after reading your explanation we saw that everytime he sends a text to me he got a 55555555 sms with default body, so its realy the fact that his phone cant save the textmessage into the threaded sms history. its send, but not saved. on the other hand it flawlessly work on my phone. i can send a text on my pad and see it almost directly on my phone in the threaded history. funny tho =) now we're gonna flash his phone to another rom.
i'll keep an eye on this thread. it would be realy cool if you would mention it somewhere when u think u found a workarround. we will test it then =)
ah and we found another bug just now. when i want to write a new sms to contactB i have no choice to choose the number to send. so my girlfriend for example have 3 different numbers, and the app want to use the first number of the contact, in this situation its her home number.. no way to send a sms to that one ^^

Thanks for the clarification. It must be an incompatibility with the rom then.
I'll repeat for clarity: when you see a message to the number "5555555555" its simply a problem with the phone not saving the information properly. An SMS has NOT been sent to this number.
Please let me know if flashing a different rom fixes the problem!
Hi Friends,
I have a nokia lumia phone.
I dont know what happened but all of a sudden when i have observed i was able to see context menu icons after sliding right to homescreen, the apps where arranged alphabetically with the Alphabet box on top of each app.this creates a very long menu to scroll.
Please help.I dont want to reset my phone again.is there any setting i fiddled with?
I think MS will have to pop up an info box when this happens.
Don't worry it's normal, it is by design. It is to make it easy to jump through a lot of applications. I find it very useful, you probably will too when you get used to it.
Thank you...i thought i have done something wrong and nokia support asked me to reset my device for it...Youve saved me
Yes this is the list of all of your apps
When you have 30 or more apps, Letters appear, you can click on them to jump from one to another, when you are used to, it's pretty nice
The same thing happened to me today. I counted 45 apps installed. It seems to be the magic number.

I think the limit is 45 apps? I also find the letters useful. Makes finding the app you want much easier/quicker when you are used to it.
So I installed the February leaked ICS for S2 and while everything works mostly ok I am missing the contacts tab on my dialer. The Contacts/Groups/etc tabs are on the "Contacts" up but unless I was high in the last few months I remember a 'Contacts' tab being on the dialer too... It's only annoying of course, but maybe I am doing something wrong here. I already tried scrolling the tab area to see if it was hidden somewhere, no game. Also did a wipe on CWM to check if it was the problem and still no contacts tab.

This is not a fix for your problem but an alternative....Just go to the market and try the "Go Contacts" install and put a shortcut to your home....
Google has separated phone and contact app in ICS it used to be one app.
Hence your problem.
There should be another app called Contacts. like an orange rectangle with a silhouette of a man.
You can get into contacts from the phone app by pressing menu and selecting contacts. Google removed the contacts button from the dialer.
Really? That's strange (not to say stupid). Go Dialer is ok I think. Any other Dialer suggestions? I would like one that let me edit the number format (I use the phone in US english and it formats the numbers as xxx xxx xxxx but all my phones are xx xxxx xxxx)
Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for but I've heard a lot of good stuff about "Dialer One" on the market. It's free and has decent reviews as well. Good luck!

After updating to ICS on my Droid Bionic, I've been looking for a solution to the odd disappearance of the Contacts tab that I was so used to in Gingerbread. I suppose I could just train myself to open Contacts first instead of dialer when I want to call someone. If I can't seem to remember to do that, I can always open Dialer then tap the menu softkey and select "Search" at the top of the list -- it will take you right to Contacts. This seems to be much easier than installing other contact apps and / or rooting.
Good day.
I updated to jelly bean last week. It came with talk back. trying everything I can think of, I have come to the conclusion that if anything else in accessibility is on, talk back come on too. I have a pebble watch, an love it. But when either it, or pebble notifier, it light wave is on, then the blasted voice tells me everything I am doing. It's very annoying. I tried stopping talkback with system tuner, which led to even worse problems. (like no touch screen function except with the s-pen.) Does anyone know how to get rid of talk back? Thanks in advance.

Root your phone, download an app for deleting system apps. delete it.
You can find how to root your phone in the development forums. Make sure you do it for the correct version of andriod ie:4.1.2

Disable it in settings/application manager/all applications. Find talkback and select uninstall updates. After updates are uninstalled go back into talkback from application manager, select force stop, then disable.
Right! Never delete a system app until you have disabled it or froze it with TiBU, then tested your phone fir a day or so. You never know how or what those apps are connected to.

True. Thats why I tried to disable it. And google text to speech. And Samsung text to speech. Each one stops it for a while. Then it comes back on even though it shows it is disabled. Its enough to make you start pulling out your hair.
If it says it is off then you are experiencing something else. What speech are you getting?

Whenever I turn a page. Which page of apps or widgets I am on.ect. I disabled all three. Then powered down the pbone. When it came back up, it has the talkback hand up I the top bar. Says it is on. Yet it doesn't even show up in settings/accasabilities menu. I'm stumped.

For me the issue was being caused by that fact that I have NoLED turned on in Accessibility. And it's a known issue with the developer of NoLED because he has a FAQ item about it. The best I've been able to do is get the talkback completely silent by disabling Talkback, Google Text to Speech and Samsung TTS. NoLED still works, and the nagging voice is gone, the only unwanted artifact is the HAND icon of Talkback that continues to show up in the Notification bar even though it's not running. I can live with that way easier than hearing that silly voice telling me everything I was doing.
For what it's worth I think the guides provided concerning rooting and rom upgrades for this phone are not as explicit or clearly written as they could be. Kudos to those who took time to do and provide what's there, and I realize that they've most likely moved on to newer devices, but even though I've rooted most of my devices in the past and am not a complete noob I did not feel comfortable using the provided instructions on this device. I haven't bricked a device yet, and don't want to start with this one.
Well, I'm not running no led. Whenever any of the services I use are active (pebble, or pepple notifier) are activated, talkback is activated. Like you, I have rpoted every device up to this one. Not really scared of bricking it. Just not sure a new rom would help. Contacted samsung, and was told it was a hardware problem. Like I'm an idiot. Obviously its in the software. Just not sure if it is samsung specific. Guess I'll just keep bumbling along with this work around.

FYI. You can get rid of the Talkback icon after each reboot by opening the notification bar, touch and hold Talkback, pick App Info, this will open into Settings App Info (for some reason), pick force stop and then the icon is gone until the next reboot.

Thanks. However, every time I have force stoped it, my touch screen will only work with the stylus. Touch input goes dead. And sometimes the touch alignment goes so that when you touch in one place, it refesters somewhere else. Guess I'll just live with the hand.

This whole Talkback feature appears to be filled with issues. I think I'll live with the hand (and not talk to it, lol), rather than risk more complications and further issue. So far I like Jellybean, but I hope that the next version of Android on Samsung devices fixes these issues.
As an aside, another thing that took me by surprise was the use of a new mountpoint for the external SD card. It took me a bit to figure out why /sdcard/external_sd was empty of files, but Music and other apps were able to see the data I had on the card. It's been awhile since my days as a UNIX SA and it dawned on me, literally in the middle of the night that perhaps the OS was using a different mountpoint. I was very relieved to find it under /storage/extSdCard and that my data was both there and able to be used.

Did you uninstall TalkBack (using something like Titanium BackUp) and not just disable it? If so, when you pick App Info from the Talkback notification does it open up the "Settings Version 4.1.2-I717UCMD3" app? If not It might be that we have different apps installed causing a different app to come up. If this is the case, would you mind trying going into Settings, Application Manager, All, Settings (the one with "Version 4.1.2-I717UCMD3", I have 2 Settings apps) and force stop that and see if that works.
I never uninstalled talkback. Since i haven't bothered rooting. forced stop defiantly gave me headaches, so I settled for stopping the text to speech of google and samsung. Running android 4.1.2. Ive seen on other posts where this is a samsung issue, and hopefully they are working on it. Looks like we have the same versions. Baseband i717ucmd3 with android version 4.1.2 \. Build # JZO54k.i717ucmd3. Force stopping just screws up my touchscreen, so I'll leave it enabled for now. Maybe Samsung will fix it, but I won't be holding my breath....

I too have a Pebble, and have had the issue with talkback showing up on every reboot. I had seen that it was a Samsung issue, so all I do is get rid of it on reboots. Just turn your Pebble Notifier, or I think any other accessibility app, off then back on. This will get rid of the hand, and thus far I have not had it talk to me at all. But I am running Padawan currently, so YMMV. To turn things off and on, just select the talkback notification from the bar to get into accessibility settings.
I ended up rooting for a couple of reasons. I had already frozen Google Text to Speech, Samsung Text to Speech, or whatever it's called, and the Talkback app but still had the hand. After rooting I was able to tap on Talkback in the pull down notification screen and turn off notifications of it. Strange that is was still there, but it worked and the hand hasn't been back.
I'm running on a Samsung S9+ on Android Pie and for a while I'm having the following problem.
When I modify a contact sometimes this does not work, I get the message 'Unable to save contact'.
If I redo the same changes a second or third time, the save works.
Almost all my contacts are in my gmail account, only a couple of them locally.
I already read forum and they say to export contacts, delete all of them and reimport but this does not make much sense when the contacts are in gmail.
I also know I can hard reset the device but that's something I want to avoid.
Are there any other options to get rid of this error.
As far as I can see I'm using the Samsung contacts app.

Well, this is something I'm going to try and see what the results are.
But is this a general problem, I haven't found complaints about this on other forums.
Is it the combination of the Samsung contacts app with some other apps?
If possible I would like to get it to work with the sammy app.
I went back to the original of Pie contacts app and that's version is 10.2.20.10 but with the same problem.
There's a release 11.060.2 but I cannot install this version.
And than there's something else. When I open the camera and leave it open for a while without taking a photo or video it shuts down on itself.
Is there anybody with this problem too?

ive had the same issue with my current S9, previous A8, S5's (yes, plural. 3 of them to be exact. 2 were mine, one was my dads. 2 G900V's and a G903VL) and a S4. Different networks tested, different carriers, all the same result. Samsung contacts app has always been broken for me and ive frequently tried it too as it gets annoying and i too wanted all sammy stuff on my sammy phone.
