Have a few questions about...everthing - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i waited for Verizon to do and OTA update for my Droid Eris beause i didn't want to take the chance of rooting it. However i'm tired of the little lag i get with this phone and i want to overclock it, too bad i need to root it. So i have a few questions.
1. What roms will work my Droid Eris. (I know they're everywhere but some people say they don't work, bugged, etc. Which one is the most dependent)
2. Is there a video guide anywhere that can show me how to root. (Again i know there's guides but i prefer a visual guide if I'm gonna take the risk of bricking my phone)
3. If anyone has overclocked their Droid Eris what is a safe GHZ and what ap works the best with this?
4. I've been reading that i will most likely have to downgrade my Droid Eris to 1.5 stock from 2.1 OTA update. Is there a way to do such a thing. There is a guide but it says something like it doesn't work anymore, unless im reading it wrong.
5. Just a question i've been wondering since recently, When could i be expecting a Froyo Rom if at all.
Yes, i know these are noob questions but i just recently got a Droid Eris and i want to take full advantage of this device. Thank you for your time reading this and Thank you again if you respond nicely and don't call me a noob.

1. Any of the ROMs. Choosing one is a matter of personal preference. The two I've been using lately are EvilEris 3.0 and CyanogenELB 2.5 (ErisLightningBolt). EvilEris is a Sense rom and looks a lot like the standard HTC OS you're used to. CyanogenELB is based off the standard android sources. CyanogenELB takes a little extra work to get it really workable (adding the google apps and installing the MMS fix with for 2.5) but it's pretty darn good.
2.Video: youtube.com/watch?v=_brg2NbBmx8 Can't post links but you can copy and paste. Any guide for 1.5 will work with 2.1 OTA.
3. Overclocking is dependent on your phone. Numerous reports say staying at or below 768MHz is safe for all phones. Just about everyone uses SetCPU which you can find in the Market for pay or on this forum for free.
4. You do NOT have to downgrade to root. Use the same 1.5 procedure to root a 2.1 OTA phone.
5. Read the KaosFroyo thread. It's a work in progress and loads, but doesn't function as a phone. He's busy with work, so kaos will work on it when time allows.

Thank you so much, Just helped me out alot. I really hope this goes well and i don't have that lag anymore(Extremely annoying). Thank you, seriously

So i have EvilEris on my phone now, works great and everything however i want to try the CyanogenELB 2.5 rom but I'm not sure what i have to download from the site...pretty noobish i guess. The thing im trying to say is a the download site he gives theres about 7 files and im not exactly sure what to download. I don't wanna flash the wrong thing and brick my phone. If you could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

dl CyanogenELB2.5.zip, CyanogenELB-GoogleApps-v2.zip, CyanogenELB-MMS-fix.zip, 5MPcamera.zip, and ClearVM.zip.
flash CyanogenELB2.5.zip and then flash CyanogenELB-GoogleApps-v2.zip (do NOT reboot in between those 2 flashes).
then, reboot phone... after you setup (google account, etc), shutdown and then flash the CyanogenELB-MMS-fix.zip, the 5MPcamera.zip, and ClearVM.zip (no need to reboot in between those either). then restart again.
should be good to go from there

MMS doesn't work with the installed SMS app; the dev's notes say "must use Handcent".
Also, I can't get the IME_mod keyboard to do anything but FC ... do you have the same result?

Thanks Tenzo it works and everything but i think im gonna go back to EvilEris since i get a lag every now and then for some reason and sometimes it just reboots on itself. Thanks for the help though

Voodoo where it's at bro. One click lag fix only gives good quadrant score ,voodoo makes your phone feel lag-less but has a little smaller quadrant + amplifys the headphone Jack. It's your decision.

You need root to get any lagfix. If your on the stock OTA 2.2 you need to odin back to stock, re root and then flash a voodoo kernel.

First you need to install rom manager from the market. The free one will suffice. Then open it and flash clockwork recovery. Next find the voodoo kernel thread by supercurio in the development section. Pick your kernel id go with the one closest to your baseband. Download and place on the internal sd card. The using rom manager reboot into recovery. If that takes you to the blue recovery then click on reinstall packages. You may have to click that twice. You should end up at a green recovery menu. Select install zip from sd card then select choose zip. Then scroll down and find the kernel and click it. It will ask if your sure. Select yes. After a bit another menu will show up. Select go back then reboot system. Wait till its done. It will take 10 minutes or so. A robotic female voice will let you k ow when its done.

My problem is similar to yours godfathermzq. I am new to all this and I was scared that I will brick my phone while installing unofficial froyo 2.2. So I waited loooong enough and now I have installed the official froyo 2.2 from samsung’s website.
My phone is slow and I want to get a lag fix. I am using Samsung Vibrant (love it) and I don’t even have tons of app running. I have Launcher Pro + Fancy Widget + few apps.
I have few set of questions and would really appreciate some help.
1. Did anyone try Greggory’s method? Were you successful?
2. Should I try Ryan’s One click lag fix considering there haven’t been any major updates with it since August 2010- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760571
If I brick my phone, if there a way to fix it to run again?
3. Anything possibly I can do to speed up my phone?
4. Any other alternative way I can follow? Please help!
Thank you very much for your input! Your help is really appreciated!
My advice is get Clockwork recovery installed and then flash a custom rom like Bionix or Trigger. Stock is better with 2.2 but it's amazing how much they can optimize the rom.
I've been running Bionix roms for months and they are fantastic. Team Whiskey FTW.
"Greggory's Method" is how just about everyone does this. He laid it out as clear and concise as I've seen it though. Read it again, then read this: the Vibrant Bible and then do it. It’s the only way to get what you guys want.
Yeah it’s a little scary at first but, if you follow each step and don’t rush anything, (Like: do it on a full battery; don’t freak out if a screen in the middle of it seems to be “stuck” for 3 minutes; don’t touch a button for 15-20 minutes after the first reboot - then reboot again) you will be fine. The instructions all start to click once you begin the actual process.
And, yeah, you can mess up your phone. If you’re not down with that, stop here and be happy with the pretty great device you have now. But I agree with Radio, just go right for a new ROM like Bionix v1.3.1 and you will be ready for prime time. I'm telling you guys: the risk is minimal and the payoff is substantial.
I had this same problem when I got my vibrant, then I learned that no matter HOW bad you **** up, ODIN will save your ass almost everytime.
Go to the android dev. section for the vibrant, and follow the noob guide that is stickied. This will help you A TON.

Detailed instrucions on Rooting Froyo 2.2 Vibrant (Vibrant updated from Kies Mini)

Need Pro Help Here, HW Issues or SW issues with this Phone

OK, Heres the scenario, This is a replacement T-959 vibrant, sent from either TMO or Samsung, really not sure! My 1st phone never had any issues with modding, and always cooperated! Until I used KIES to update one day and It bricked, because of primary and SBL corruptions. [I know!!, found out 5 mins too late about using KIES] Anyway, since Ive had this replacement phone its done nothing but fight me from the start, never has acted right I think and I feel there's something wrong HW wise with it. My problem with it now, is it wont accept any other custom ROM I try to install, and only works with either 2.1 or 2.2 stock OEM ROM's. Meaning, Anything else ROM wise, It wont go past the last part of boot sequence, and just keeps looping, and does it over and over again! Ive tried all of Simple Honeys, Toxic 8's Roms, and each time it goes thru the loading successfully, and then starts it boot-up, but every single Flash Ive done, ROM wise, it hangs up and loops at the very last part of booting up. Ive come to realize now, it isn't the ROMS, but the phone " I THINK" Each time I tried a Custom ROM install, I started with stock fresh JFD install, and wiped and cleared out everything before starting another ROM install, but with each attempt that I try to go past anything other than Froyo stock, It does this boot loop problem at the final part!! It seems like who ever sent it to me, did something to the phone to prevent this. Modding it I mean. like right now I'm on Eugenes Froyo, with the 2E RECOVERY, It was working fine, until I upgraded the Eugenes kernel, which is suppose to work with this ROM, technically the phone still runs, but as soon as I did this, I now cant get into the two drives as mass storage to tranfer files, says insert disk, like as if its a CD Rom drive, WTF!! And like I said, this phone wont accept any other ROMS now, past stock Eclair or Froyo OEM and kernels as well. I don't understand what the problem is, My guess is they flashed something to prevent modding or its just a corrupted HW issue, anybody ever seen this before. I wish I had just JTAG'd my first phone with Josh over at Mobile Tech, and saved myself all this heartbreak and frustration, but its too late for that now! So anyway, I need to determine for sure if this phones screwed, HW wise or if there is SW to get this phone straighten out, to where it'll work right like my first one used to, and begin to accept custom ROM's like it should be able to do!! I'm at my last end with this phone, and I'm desperate to get a solid reason/answer for whats happening here, because Ive followed all the instructions and standard procedures to insure that all the attempted installs of the ROMS I mentioned go correctly. And its boiling down to either HW issues or a SW issue they created before they shipped it to me, or last but least hopefully a SW fix here, that can get the HW/phone to act right again, and maybe salvage this phone, otherwise I'm thinking I need to buy another brand new phone and hope for the best. I just don't want to be stuck and limited with Froyo stock, for the rest of my time using this phone, I want my freedom to choose again, like I had before, and also It ran so much better than OEM anyways!
Go back to stock using the sticky on the q&a then root using that same methOd and when you flash a custom room make sure you wipe dalvik and cache and delete user data

Quote" Go back to stock using the sticky on the q&a then root using that same methOd and when you flash a custom room make sure you wipe dalvik and cache and delete user data"
If you had picked up on it in my post, have already done this dozens of times!! Oh and BTW, when at JFD = 2.1 Eclair, it wont allow the 2 drives access to in Cabled USB mass storage, and therefore unable to CWM flash with zips, then I must go to 2.2 Froyo next to be able to get past that problem, but again when I go from there to any custom ROM, it fails to boot at the very end, and starts its looping. Again, the 1st phone I had, never ever, behaved like this!! Same phone but, different dates of manufacturing and also this one came from either Samsung or TMO in Plano,TX where that's all, they do is send out phones for replacement, and this one wasn't in a original box, something they worked on, grabbed off the shelf, and sent to me!! Its just a shame that 99% of all the ROMS are in zipped form, instead of TAR files, at least then I could've tried flashing some of them from, Eclair to see if that made a difference, but when they are zipped, you must use CWM recovery to flash, and thus again presents another problem as far as what I'm going thru here!
Got any thing else, Idea wise, that actually hasn't been tried yet, that makes sense??
OK, Ive made some progress, It seems for whatever stupid reason, that unlocking my phone, [jailbreaking] was the culprit of this phones renegade behavior, I simply restored it back to a locked status as a TMO provider, and Wholla, the phones now acting right!! And I have been able to get it to the ROM I wanted and flash a better kernel as well with 0 defects!!! And then I jailbroke it again, and its working flawlessly.
Personally I don't understand why that had a bearing on its behavior, but nun the less it did. And has cause me a few extra wrinkles around my eyes in stress trying to figure this out by myself, especially when all the suggestions and procedures I did was for nothing, until this phone was restored to a locked condition again!!
Go figure Right???? Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!! Anyway I hope mentioning this will prevent someone else in losing their hair or sanity!!
hello i think we have the problem, i also have openline my vibrant to be able to use here in our country.. i have 2.1 eclair, i just want to know what 2.2 ROM did you used coz you've said that it's ok to upgrade it to 2.2, but not other ROM, where did you get it.. can you pm me the link

New Dell Streak Mini 5 User With ?'s For ROM Help Install?

Which is the best rom to go with?
I've downloaded _n0p_'s DSC v0.7 and Tenorntex's Longhorn 2.1 v2, seeing as these 2 were the newest and latest and had Android 2.3.3
Are there any other better rom's or has anyone tried the 2 I listed, if so whats the difference?
Thanks
Better is very vague when it comes to ROM's it all depends on what you want in a Rom. I have old Simple Streak 1.2. Yes there is newer ROM's out but this one works perfect for what I need. In my Case Stability.
DSC is the most actively developed/supported. Plenty stable for me. I don't think any of the earlier Froyo based ROMs are being developed further.
I meant as far as Stability, Performance and up to date, I don't care about the Stage UI and was gunna theme it myself or use SPB Shell 3D.
Could someone point me in the direction to an easy install rom?
I don't wanna install "these update pkg's" after renaming and then plug my phone into the pc and open cmd and then type this in on the pc. et cetera et cetera
I just wanna download a zip drag it to the card, bootup in safemode and install from sd card.
I'd consider doing all that work if I weren't testing out the device.
I won it off ebay, the guy replaced the screen and said it's been randomly rebooting ever since. But he never did a factory reset or new rom install ever since fixing the screen, so I just wanna simply install a rom and see if it works then go on from there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I do not believe that anyone can change the way that the Streak works just so it is more convenient for you or so that you don't have to learn anything.
In the time you took to navigate to XDA and make your post you could have flashed a ROM onto your Streak - plugging it in and everything.
The only ROM you can install by just putting it on the SD Card is the same one that is currently on the Streak, if you don't mind holding down a couple of buttons and using recovery mode.

If anyone is wondering why developers leave and give the site a bad reputation look no further. Someone with over 600 posts under his username should not be making noob posts like this one. With so many posts he knows how to use the search engine and the wiki, but I guess when it comes to our device using the search engine and the wiki is an inconvenience, along with renaming a file "update.pkg".

Some people learn better through interaction where they can actually ask questions... I don't have over 600 posts so who are you talking about? Furthermore if you are talking about first thing I'd do is learn how to read mr wise guy, secondly!! You tell me how one is supposed to learn which rom is the best based on user reviews and opinions, where do I go to find that out and wheres the wiki on that, unless you expect people to read 200 and 300 page threads also? I have barely 150 posts and rarely post at all unless it is to ask questions or make requests. It's not like I have 600 posts and every single one of them are questions.
This is only my second time dealing with android and second time flashing android first time it was simply moving a zip to the sdcard and booting up into safe mode and selecting update through sdcard, so certainly I'd be baffled and have questions when one time it was so easy and the second time I've gotta jump through hoops and everything.
Lastly since WHEN Is asking a Question SOOOO wrong in the Dell Streak 5 Q&A Category???? It's not like I posted it in the wrong area or something, but ohhh no'es how dare n00b be confused and need a lil help/guidance of some experienced users, ohh mercy me the drama in that!!
Last time I checked that is what XDA is here for, for people to learn, not to be attacked by asshat trolls like you.
If anyone is wondering why XDA has a multitude more lurkers than posters look no further than to the hardass that is Strephon Alkhalikoi View Postwho can't stand to see a n00b in need of help!

Download appropriate recovery to flash from Stock Recoveries or Custom recoveries
Enter fastboot mode on your phone
Flash recovery with fastboot: fastboot flash recovery <path to recovery.img>
After flashing is complete: fastboot reboot to reboot

I hope that you can actually read better than that. The wiki does not say to stay away from fastboot. It clearly states two commands that should not be used on the Streak. It goes onto give a number of examples of using fastboot.
I hope that you other 157 posts (as I wtite this) on XDA were not as tiresome or ill-informed as the ones you have posted here.
The information you need is here in the forums, available at the links in my signature, and on other forums. Please exercise some patience and read the info.

First I'm gunna try factory reset and see if that fixes the random reboot problem, hopefully it does the seller said he just installed the new screen and never did anything except for just trying to powering it up, use normally and it would reboot suddenly.
WELL NO DUH, you need to restore everything back to default settings with a factory/hard reset. Thats like trying to install a video card or webcam and expecting it to work right away without installing the dirvers. - Hopefully!
Well it's only getting as far as the dell logo screen/splash screen. I've tried the entering safe mode but nothing yet, once it's powered on it just sits at that screen.
dsc is great and very stable if you dont mind the few following quirks.
1. google maps will always run in the background unless you freeze it. This will drain your battery quite quickly
2. Wifi might or might not be broken, if it is broken use wifi analyzer if not profit
the benefits of dsc?
fast
running GB instead of froyo
dpi change is awesome.
screen default orientation is awesome
stable other than those few bugs
Battery life was decent.
-------------
Im however just running 2.2 froyo on a stock rogers. The battery life is amazing on stock 2.2 (a whole day, and still have about 30% with heavy usage and constant 3g) and the wifi works fine. For me this is the most stable rom however it is a bit slow compared to DSC. This phone is used for work so it has to just.. work.
---------------
Havent really tried the other roms yet, but depending on what you want out of the phone you can try the DSC and see if you can live with these little quirks.
Yea I was leaning more towards DSC than Longhorn, it looks like it's updated more frequently too.
Bad & Good News
Turns out when the guy replaced the screen he fried the mobo... Me and a friend at a small local pc store tried everything from rooting with new rom to factory resets. Always had the same problem.
But the guy at the pc store sells phones also and said he'd give me $100.00 credit to a new factory refirbed, rooted and unlocked dell streak mini if I gave him the one we tried to repair.

Help, bought an atrix for my mom

I recently purchased a rooted, and I believe an unlocked (says unlocked on startup screen) atrix for my mom.
Here's what I can tell you about it:
Android version 2.3.7
Baseband N_01.77.36P
Mod Version RedPill Hybrid V1
Build number GWk74
Now I have a few issues. The font on here is WAY too small for my mom, I'm looking for some sort of stock rom or a way to return to stock. I'm not an atrix owner, I own an unrooted SGS2. I've rooted phones before but I know nothing about this one.
Can anyone help me please with these two things? Sorry if I seem noobish, but I'd like her to have the best experience she can. And I really don't know much about these phones.
Thanks!
Oh and also, there's no google apps on the phone so I can't download another launcher :/
This is a good place to start. Should have everything you need just make sure you read all of it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600

I ran across that earlier. I'm under the impression that using fruit cakes is where I want to head with this, but I'm not really sure where to get started. I didn't root this phone so I have absolutely no idea what version it was on before. I'm assuming it has an unlocked bootloader because it says unlocked when it's booting up.
I really don't want to brick a phone that my mom just paid for. Not to mention we got a multimedia dock with it which is unuseable with this rom

Yes fruitcakes is what you'll need to return to stock rom and can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009 2.36 is the latest gingerbread version released
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
I appreciate your help so far, I apologize I've never really used an atrix. I apologze if I ask any completely dumb questions.
So using the 2.3.6 system and boot, I'm assuming. Will these return me to stock motoblur or just stock gingerbread?
After this, will I be able to get updates if there are any?
Also, I don't really see total directions on how to flash these. I assume I can use cwm from rom manager, or do I need some other recovery?
Edit: none of the links work for those files.
whatever you do, once you use fruitcake to get to stock 2.3.4 or 2.3.6 you should probably freeze Updater using titanium backup to prevent your mom from clicking 'ok' and install any future official OTA updates.

Yes the 2.36 system and boot will install stock Atrix gingerbread with motoblur on your device. Unfortunately you won't be able to update as they will likely brick your phone. Fruitcakes are the safest way to upgrade
Rom Manager's recovery is what I use just make sure you have the latest version and backup your current rom
Forgot the links were down on the fruitcakes thread let me see if I have the files somewhere

You guys have no idea what lifesavers you are. I can't get to the market because the phone has no google apps, how do I know if I have the latest rom manager? I'm assuming it will just automatically install the latest version of cwm?
I eagerly await your fruitcake files. Thankyou!
Honestly.. I wouldn't fruitcake.
The easiest thing for you to do would be to just install a custom GB ROM. She won't have all the sluggish bloatware, and it'll be almost identical to stock. Easier, too..
Just my opinion.
I'd really rather have her on stock.
However, can you recommend a rom in case I can't find these fruitcake files? I need something stable that's going to work with the hd multimedia dock.

Personally, I don't use the GB ROMs anymore (they use entirely too many resources for my liking lol), but I've had good experiences with Aura, Alien, and Ninja.
GingerMod looks pretty solid as well - I tested it for a few minutes but had to go back to a CM based MOD due to preference.
I know the ones I've listed above all have functionality with the HDMI cable, so I assume they work with the multimedia dock, as well. I don't own one, so I've never been able to test/been interested in that functionality.
If I were in your situation, I'd download a bunch of different GB ROMs, test them all, see if any suit all of her needs - if none do, then go for stock

I'm open to downloading a few, but is there any other way to go back to stock besides fruitcake that isn't going to blow up the phone? I don't want to brick it my mom would kill me.
Saw this the other day, might be worth a look in to: [Batch/Script] MFBSR - Moto-Fastboot: Stock Restore
This looks like good information, I think I can work with this. For fear of sounding stupid, I'm sorry Ive never done this stuff with an atrix.
Can you please give me a quick step by step for this:
1. Download MFBSR.
2. Boot into fastboot.
3. Run the script.
4. Your done!
I downloaded the script, I just have no idea how to boot into fastboot and run it. I don't have any of the stuff on my computer for this phone since I wasn't the one that rooted it. I'm going to read through the whole thread, but any help you could give would be great.
EDIT: Ooh because my rom is 2.3.7 some say I shouldn't flash this and I need a fruitcake instead, which I can't find a dang download for.
ATT 4.5.140 - 2.3.6
2.3.6 System and Boot
That's the fruitcake I need if anyone knows of a working download link.
fastboot (from briefmobile's instructions)
Put your device into Fastboot mode:
– Turn off your device.
– Hold down the power button and downward volume button until you see “Fastboot” on your screen
– Push the upward volume button

If you turn the phone off, and hold the VOL down key while it's powering back on (the boot screen (moto logo with unlocked in top left corner)), you should see "fastboot" pop up underneath the "unlocked" - hit VOL up key to select fastboot - have phone connected with USB.
If you pull up a cmd prompt and nav. to the dir. where the fastboot files are (I'm assuming they came with the script), type "fastboot devices" and see if it pulls anything. You should see an id for the atrix if it's connected.

Beaten to it
Is it safe to do this when I'm on redpill 2.3.7? Seems like downgrading might be a bad idea?
I'm not sure about going from RedPill straight to stock 2.3.4, but I know that many ROMs use different versions of android, and there are no repercussions for jumping from, say, 2.3.7 to 2.3.4. If you're worried, you could jump down to a custom ROM that uses that same version of android, and then run the script.
Alright, that seems like an alright idea. Going to go for it and I will get back to you guys. Thankyou again for the help. Messing with a phone that doesn't belong to me is rather scary.

Leave it to me to prove a guide wrong that is not supposed to go wrong.

I upgraded my Razr to the early ICS release months ago. I did lose some features that I had came to love in gingerbread. The guide I used said that at the time it unable to be reverted back, so I just lived with it.
I used my son's Razr that used the OTA upgrade, and it had the other features working correctly, so I was wanting to go to the newest version.
I followed the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1735935 and got the "Preflash validation failure" on a couple of lines and an unable to find cdrom error during step 5.
Now it shows the dual core logo, and goes no-where else. I can see that the screen is on if I turn the lights off, but I am not able to get anywhere. I have also read the atrix forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504323 about the errors. This site is becoming so massive that things are getting hard to find. I also followed some other suggestions on other sites, but still nothing.
There are so many people here saying that it was fixed in other ways, but I cannot tell which are considered out of date, and which I should try.
I do not currently care If I go to the newest version, or go to gingerbread and then accept the OTA from Verizon.
Please help.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Just fastboot to .211 then install .215 if you want. Done.

That worked. THANK YOU so very much. I was worried that I might have a brick for a while.
What do you consider the easiest way to flash a rom like one of these? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518519 I do like the verizon stock, I just hate the verizon apps being forced into my rom.
I do not mind reading and following directions if you can provide link I would be thankful, I am just so unsure with so many different people saying different things here and other sites.
I appreciate your help.
Thanks, Liquidd.
Im at work right now but when i get home ill right up a guide for you

I too like the stock version. What I did and found it works pretty good is use matts utility to root it. I think there's a specific version for .211 and one for. 215. Then get titanium backup and freeze all the bloat ware apps you don't want running. If you do someday want them jut unfreeze them, that easy.
From how I understand it, is freezing them pretty much disables them from starting and ever running, pretty much like they aren't even installed on there. This method has worked great for me and maybe saves battery because your phone never even starts them in the background. Also when there's an OTA I think it checks for certain VZW apps and if they're not installed it won't take the OTA. with TI backup you can just unfreeze them and take the OTA. Hope this helps.

I don't like to mess with the phone with leaks and custom roms.. So i use tibu to freeze things i don't use.
Remember, the key weird us freeze, nit delete or uninstall.. Or u will have hell of u need to update future ota..

Root, install safestrap 2.0, open app and install recovery, reboot phone, when greeted by new recovery prompt press menu button, in recovery create a backup, scroll down and toggle safe system (enable safe system aka dual boot from sd card), format system, wipe data and cache, install the rom of your choice and enjoy!
If you ever want to run stock rom again, just toggle safe system again from recovery (disable it)...phone will boot phone rom again.
