Hey,
I'm currently using MoDaCo Custom ROM 3.1 on the HTC Hero GSM, which I've had running since I first rooted a while back, but I was wondering if it is worth using a different ROM now? What is the best ROM to use at the moment, eg the most reliable? I'm asking, simply because I have been running Android 1.5 ever since I've owned the phone.. and it's now starting to feel rather out-dated.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
Down to preference. Im running VillainRom 10.3 with JIT enabled. Its stable OCd at 710 and get 4.8MFLOPS on Linpack.
Have decent battery (although only added JIT and got it stable today so that will affect it, but shouldnt affect it too badly

I fail to see what your sig is getting at, it seems to be an attack on villain for no reason at all. Your saying your getting around 3mflops at the moment (same as villainrom) then you say that with jit VR only gets 5.03 as if thats bad?
Anyway to answer the OP you just need to try different ones and see what you like.
VillainRom has an OTA updater that makes updating nice and simple, plus we are working on having a stable JIT release soon
Edit: apologies if I have misunderstood your sig

I don't attack Villain??? It's a great ROM but for simplicity and speed etc. I think Cronos Droid is the best... But I don't really get what you mean?? When did my sig say that 5.03MFLOPS is bad? It's marked with that little line on the bottom (which I don't know the word for in English?) But please explain further i don't want my sig to be misunderstood

Ok Keep the work up on Villain im looking forward to that JIT release
I was in the extact same place you were a while back, I think the problem your facing is trying to find a ROM thats as stable and as fast as modaco 3.1.
My suggestion get vanilla eclair 3.?? - 4.0 its stable, smooth, as fast if not faster than modaco and you get some nice cool features that seem to be missing from most hero ROMs.
You do however loose sense, but anyone with any sense will loose sense.
oh its also 2.1 as far as I can see, and its my current stable, everyday use ROM, occasionally you do get this freaky error when you unlock....very trippy, but just lock it and unlock it and the problems fixed.
Hope that helps, it does have a slightly shaky install, but if you want just PM me and I can help.
I like the chocolateEclaire. Faster than the vanilla and with all the features you desire.
On my Hero for a week and its a stayer.

Its alright now guys, all my rooting knowledge has come flooding back to me and I've been testing out some ROMS. Thanks for your help though =)

hi guys i am new here so please be kind =D
ok, so i have a t-mobile g2 which i got in february and have been waiting ever since for 2.1. i am tired of waiting and am also thinking that 2.1 is probably a waste and would rather root.
so heres what i am looking for in a custom rom: longer battery life, overclocking, something that dosent lag alot (sense dosent but it has its annoying moments, especially on the lock screen), ease of use. you get the idea.
now i have not done alot of research into the custom rom area so any suggestions would be great.
and a second question: what is the best and safest way to go about rooting?
cheers guys

Here is a guide for rooting and installing custom ROMs.
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=375&start=0
You will need gold card method iirc
VillainROM 10.3 with JIT and ninpo's bfs kernel is really fast. And you mention lock screens. Vr has stock android one too with selectable wallpaper and working alarm
cool, thanks will take a look at these cheers.
any other suggestion on roms, ive heard alot about modaco... but i what have youhad experience with?

In my experiences with it it's the fastest official 2.1 ROM along with VillainROM (Cronos Droid is also based on it but MoDaCo is more "raw" (more official) if you can say that) but Cronos Droid is even faster because of Feeyos modified libraries MoDaCo is a bit more laggy at times but MCR 4 isn't released yet (it's only a RC i think?) so thats what you would expect... I think when MCR 4 is released it's probably as fast as Cronos Droid but for now I think Cronos Droid would be the best for you unless you are totally in to that shiny Legend/Desire kind of look (which Cronos Droid doesen't have) then i would recommend MoDaCo or VillainROM
ahhh cool, im not tooo bothered about the look as long as it runs well and gives me a bit better battery life. just a thought out of 10 what are the chances of bricking my phone?

Umm. I used modaco ages ago (about 7 months or so), but I don't really know what it's like these days.
I am actually one of the devs of VillainROM, so not really in any place to give a totally unbiased answer.
Basically, it depends on what you are after. If you are looking for the fastest ROM possible, then something like the new SuperHero, which we will be releasing in the next day or so, might be up your street. It's a cross between stock 'eclair android' and some little bits of HTC sense. So it has the speed of vanilla, with the little niceities of Sense.
If you're after a totally Vanilla ROM, there are some of them around too, often based on CyanogenMod. Look for the terms AOSP and Vanilla if you want one of these. Be aware they might lack some of the features you are used to currently, since HTC does add a fair bit of stuff on top of Android.
For the pure HTC Sense ROM, there are a good number of them out too, although I have to confess I have completely lost track of which ones are out there. There's one from 42turkeys I think, and modaco and cronos etc. although I can't really recommend any of them as I haven't used them.
If you are after the 'perfected theme', there's a VillainROM theme from petsasj over on www.villainrom.co.uk that finishes off some of the aesthetics of the ROM, as there are some little imperfections in HTC's release. If you pop over to the IRC channel (link on the homepage), someone will be able to answer any detailed questions you have with ROM etc.

Right. Bricking... Well, so long as you don't do anything stupid with your phone, like pulling battery, you should be fine. If you want someone to guide you through the process or answer any questions you have, pop onto the IRC i mentioned.
So long as you are careful, and follow the instructions to the letter, you should be absolutely fine
VillainROM has a few little extra kernels etc. and a couple of fixes on the Over-the-air updater app that might help you get some better performance and battery life too
Just ask if you need help
wow alot to think about, hmmm well, i like fast, but asthetics arnt a big matter to be honest, i just want it to run well. just another quick query, if i have to send it off for warrenty or anything i can revert back to stock yes?

Course Pop in the goldcard and then use the RUU (stock HTC ROM exe file) to restore back to the the factory condition
Fast is good for me too VR10.3 with ninpo's BFS kernel and 729MHz Overclock is good enough for me
im sure im gonna go with a villain rom as it has one of the clearest guides i have seen, plus i have the sdk and that stuff for the gold card thing. when is superhero out then seen as that is the fastest? gonna read it through a couple more times aswell so that i can really get to grips with what to do =]

The link isn't working for me either but I don't know anyone who has used the 'one click' methods.
I highly recomend BTDAG's guide linked in my sig (its the same guide as on Villain site) , you will get support if there is something you don't understand or if something unexpected happens. Read the whole thing through 1st, then start from the top.
arrgghh, just annoyed, cus it was working earlier. oh well. and yeah, will just have to follow the other one. i just liked the idea of a one click method. cheers =]
Quick mention, I believe I had the same phone as you T-Mobile_G2_Touch? The guide in my sig was created using the G2, if it helps
p.s. I advise using an XP machine, drivers for Windows 7 are a *****.
Hello. I'm very picky with my ROMS. I'm currently on KaosFroyo v23. I really like it but I really want my camera back as apps from the market tend to lag really really bad for me and I use my camera a lot. Here are my requirements:
1) Camera
2) No lag in dialer (AFAIK Sense ROMS do)
Not that much to ask for. I really want to go back down to 2.1 and I really want a Sense based ROM. Every sense based ROM I have tried so far has had major lag when dialing out and I can't have this.
Can someone suggest any ROMS that are 2.1 based, whether it be Sense based or not WITHOUT dialer lag. I would really like a ROM that have the softkey backlights working correctly as well.
If you find this thread useless or boring or stupid; I'm sorry. I'm very new to this.
This should be in general, not the dev section.
And why switch from Kaosfroyo? There have been teasers of the camera working that were posted yesterday
XtrROM . its super fast and stable and there is a sense version
non sense - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694472 (be sure to get version 3.0.3) NOT 3.1
sense - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726467 (3.1 on this version is fine)

What's wrong with 3.1? I'm using and it's great.
i dont mean to say anything is wrong with it but its a beta and i havent tried it to give my opinion on how stable it is i just dont want to give someone a recommendation and have the beta be unstable or anything, but now that i hear it works..does it have flash like the 3.1 sense rom?
Sounds like you want froyo with camera.
Apparently KF will be getting full camera support and you can always just use camera magic. I have "camera" hidden from my app drawer with Launcherpro and it's just got camera magic there.

I enthusiastically also recommend xtrSense (current version is 3.1). It is THE BEST AND FASTEST Sense ROM you can get. The dialer lag is nearly gone. Be sure to overclock and turn on JIT. It's super fast and super stable. I get a score of 280 on quadrant when overclocked to 710Mhz. That is well above and beyond any other 2.1 Sense based ROM out there. It will easily go above a quadrant score of 300 if overclocked at or above 748Mhz.
It looks 100% identical to the official Verizon Sense ROM, but it's crazy fast.
Also even though this gets lower quadrant scores than the Froyo ROMs (they get around 400 usually), xtrSense actually feels faster. Froyo ROMs still have their issues so maybe they'll get that way eventually, but for now xtrSense is silky smooth (for an Eris running Sense anyway )

This thread kind of comes off the wrong way
I don't usually reply like this but it seems silly to call your self picky when asking for help. I feel like users try to threaten devs by saying things like " If the camera works i'll stay on KF."
It doesnt seem to me that devs create these great roms because they are desperately seeking the acceptance of the masses. They make them because its a sweet hobby and if people really latch on thats a bonus.
I read for a long while before I had the stones to even post a question on this site. It would seem as though all the devs on XDA have gotten where they have the old fashioned way by research and trial and error.
If your going to bypass the research at least post in the right place and try not to come off like a spolied brat.
That being said - XTR sense or no sense is awesome and super stable.
I have found 0 issues with it - the only minor setback and its not just specific to XTR is that Pandora acts crazy with jit enabled but as far as I know thats across all jit enabled roms.
Best of luck in your android journey friend.

As far as I can tell he's not making any demands of any developer. He's telling us his concerns with the current ROM he's using and why he'd rather just switch to another one. He's not demanding that the developer fix the issues he's having.

I own a droid, and have already rooted it, running CM6, got it down pretty alright. So I'm not all that new to rooting. But my sister has a Droid Eris, and I was looking to root that for her. I plan on using the 1 click rooting app mentioned here, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend any ROMs and/or Kernels that I should use? She's not much of a power user, I'm mostly trying to speed it up for her and get rid of stock apps and such, so any help would be great. Thank you in advance

Kaosfroyo is really great and the other two froyo roms on here I've read great things about them too I've just only used kaos and I highly recommend it
Sent from my FroyoEris using XDA App
Id suggest a frayo rom there's a few going around I personally recommend kaos frayo V32 very fast and stable, very great build. Its overclocked to 710 out of box.
my rom is pretty great also
You could also use mine, that is if you want a rom that is stock but with speed tweaks and themes.
I would also suggest one of the froyo roms. Tazz Cyanogen Froyo is really smooth and fast. Of course I think this would be a great rom for anyone.
I'd suggest running jcase's PlainJane rom and check out the new BFS kernel.
I just got a warranty replacement phone, rooted the old way and put PlainJane on there (I had been running PlainJaneT2 which just adds support for A2SD but that only complicates upgrading to froyo later) did a nandroid backup then flashed that BFS kernel and ran a linpack benchmark right after scoring near 2.5 without overclocking (PlainJane barebones absolute stock 2.1 with SuperUser and OC support)
I suggest PlainJane because it's simple, you can get moderate EXTREMELY stable performance gains, get rid of bloatware, run wifi tether and no one would be the wiser that the handset was rooted. Your sister can then confidently explore the app market, slowly get into changing some settings, try a new launcher and at some point then maybe she'd have some interest in froyo...
As great as the Eris Froyo roms are you should face the fact that they're all intended for moderately android savvy users or at least novices with aspirations to learn a LOT more on their own. Few users will ever root their phone to begin with, even fewer will go the distance learning command line for abd and the fact that you're rooting her ERIS is evidence enough imho that you should be putting the LEAST complicated MOST stock solution if you intend to do this for her.
If she walks into a verizon store with her phone she'll get no help, If she loses ANYTHING can't use something she wants to for any reason it'll be YOUR fault and she will VERY quickly forget the hours you spent tweeking her phone to squeeze out a couple more MFLOPS that she'll honestly never really use.
that's my take

Jcase Plain Jane 2.1 is a good stable ROM and agree with psilocybenine's comment.
Another good stable ROM to check into could be Sense-able 3.1. I play around and try out all the new roms that come out but this one is my everyday one for it stability. (plus I like the simple blue theme). Have not had any problems.
good luck

Thank you! That seems perfect. Another quick question though, of those two (PlainJane and Sense-able) which is most like the standard Eris UI? I want my sister to have as little trouble as possible when using it

My bad, sorry about that, I'll remember it next time thank you. As for the KaosFroyo is that one a fairly simple ROM? again, trying to think of my sister here and ease of use
All plain jane does is add oc capability a d superuser rights. Senseable has speed tweaks and apps2sd and some other tweaks. Both are sense based and are like stock with added root fun.

If you want something as close to the standard Eris UI, then that might be Plain Jane. Sense-able has some bloatware removed and other features but not to far off once you get it set up. Just read the threads thoroughly. Sense-able has a couple of add -on fixes (updated the dialer and a text input fix).
Sens Based ROM all hands up for Plain Jane. Fast, stable and sense. I would highly reccomend it as far as sense based rom. As far as Froyo my choice definitely goes to nonsensikal =)

its AOSP(vanilla) and the others mentioned above are sense based, which is how the phone comes so if you want a stock feel i used plainjane but you might want to try them both out mabey one suits you better. as far as ease i think they are all pretty easy to get used to.

not all are sense based bro
As much as I love the Froyo roms, all of them have small flaws that a not-so-power-user would quickly get frustrated with. The camera issue is one of the most notable. She would have to take a picture, then close the camera and open the gallery to view it. If she tried to preview the picture from within the camera, her phone would lock and she would have to pull the battery. If she's cool with that, put her on a Froyo rom. They're all pretty great!
If she wants pure stability and only wants to download and use apps, put her on a 2.1 rom with Apps2SD. Sense UI eats up a lot of the Eris's speed so I would recommend one without it. Plus it's like getting a new phone when you swith from Sense to non Sense based rom. Conap's ELB is my personal favorite but some of the others mentioned in this thread are also pretty stable.

Hey, my recommendation would be KaosFroyo; it's definitely smoooth sailing!
I posted an article just a couple days ago on my blog about rooting a Droid Eris if you want to check it out: http://jonsuh.com/2010/09/run-froyo-android-2-2-on-your-droid-eris-how-to/
Tried to condense all the steps all into one post. I hope it helps; lemme know how it goes
I browsed through the development section and there is SO MUCH STUFF THERE. :/
Even if I read it all I would still not really get a good answer to my question:
What are the most popular, consistently maintained and stable ROM's out there that aren't heavily themed (I like AOSP or close, not MIUI)?
I've used CyanogenMod on my Nexus but it's still in experimental phase for SG2 and I don't really want to start off my new uberphone with broken stuff.
So far from what I've gathered is that Villainrom is at least consistently maintained, but their website is almost devoid of any information in regards to looks and features.
Batista70(?) also sounds like a relatively popular choice?
I realize this sounds like a completely idiotic question from someone that's too lazy to read, but honestly to answer this question you can't just read for a few hours, you need to have been around the community for a longer time to get the feel of everything.

You are correct if you want an honest opinion look yourself try them their are a billion users asking the same question with the same answer their is no best rom .
Why not start with the simplest rom that you understand what's on it and how to flash it .
Then work your way through others .
jje
Atm, i think the best roms (no one over the other, they all good the same)
Batista70 Foxhoud 2.0
Villainrom 3.0
Leomar 2.7
those are the roms i personally tested, and looks like also the most "used" by the community.
Im sorry if i didnt listed someone else rom, it's only because i didnt tested personally.
All the 3 are KI3 (2.3.5) based, so they may have few bugs/instability since 2.3.5 is less than 1 week old.
For the KH3 (2.3.4) every rom is very stable and works fine, i personally tested:
Cognition 1.5.1
Lite'ning 6.1
Checkrom v3
If you want a not perfect (few bugs) but totally different rom, i suggest you to try gangsterjoop Miui 1.9.23 or Galnet Miui 1.9.23

That was actually more a roll of the eyes to this type of question. It gets answers like yours (no offence meant) where people just tell you what they use. Not many people have done extensive testing of every single available ROM, but people still keep asking these lame questions.
Also 'best' is very personal, unless one gives certain criteria.
I agree I'm new here and the selection is daunting. I've HAD,
HTC Tattoo
HTC Desire
ZTE Blade
Moto Defy
HTC HD2
Sony X10
This phones section seems even bigger than the HD2 forum!
Ephumuris
the best rom out there with regarding battery life and looks is..................
the one that will suit your needs and that YOU have to find out and experiment buddy.
its all good for us to tell you which one is good but unless you dont try for yourself you wont know..
but if you want a choice i recommend VillainRom or Batista two that i use back and forth or even CheckRom
but whatever you do make sure you read through each roms thread and take it from there...happy flashing
First things first...don't yell at me for creating this thread
Relatively new to android (I was an old school winmo guy for a long time *dcd!*) and now I wanna root my E3D and flash some other roms on it.
So the question is, what kinda roms do you all suggest? I love sense so any suggestions?
If you don't want to be yelled at...why not post in Q&A? This is a question right...
Anyway, Android Revolution HD is my favorite sense ROM now. MIUI is awesome if you want something radical, but is buggy. CM7 is good too but a bit buggy.

I've been using Deck's (kushdeck) sense rom for eons now. I've tried a bunch of other Sense roms, many of which were awesome, but a lot had some issues because they were nightlies or whatever. With deck's, I get unbelievable battery life in comparison to any other rom. It's a pretty standard sense rom, doesn't have much extra themeing, but it's extremely solid. (my nandroid of that rom is named KushSuperStable, lol).
If you don't wanna be yelled at, give your thread a legitimate name...

Yea, it is sad that he's gone ghost. I hope everything's alright with him in 'real life' and that all is well. Hopefully when he has some more free time he comes back over here. At least the way he left the rom is perfect, I have not one complaint about it and see no need to update it.

AndroidRevolution is great. Stock, but with ALOT of enhancements as well as having one of the best development teams on XDA!

The most stable I have used thus far have been clean rom, steel rom, and virus' eternity roms (builds 1.1, 1.2.2, and 1.4)....
Either one of those will be solid and reliable. Virus 1.4.2 rom seems very solid as well but I haven't made the jump yet simply bec#use I want to put this one through the long haul test... been on this rom and the bc kernel v3 for over two weeks, over clocked at 1.62 ghz with not one issue.
I would give eternity 1.4 a shot

Yeah GhostFaceKillah.
I use CleanRom its stock with bloatware removed and some other enhancements.
SteelRom is my absolute favorite Sense based rom. But nothing will ever beat the awesomeness of CM7
Lot of good suggestions in here, but when it really comes down to it you need to read up and just try stuff.. Doesnt take much to nand and try a rom for yourself.
Another thing that matters is what YOU use on your phone..
For example, someone said that MIUI is radical which is very true but its awesome once you get used to it and that its buggy.. but that may not be true for everyone because for me its flawless for what I use it for.. I dont have 4g in my area so I could care less about that, I dont use any hotspot apps so that doesnt matter for me as some are having issues with that. 3D doesnt work but honestly I barely ever use it anyways..
Although I wouldnt recommend MIUI as your first rom to flash because it does take some getting used to.. and you also mentioned that you like sense.
Eternity is one of my favorites and I used it for a while, its sense but has some cool features that make it different then stock sense.
Again its hard to say which are best because there are so many talented Devs around that are making awesome roms.. so get used to nanding and dive in..
another vote for Eternity Rom.
Ive been with Eternity for several weeks now. I flashed MIUI temporarily and didnt like it, back to Eternity.
I am currently on 1.4.1 and Ziggy dual core kernal. Great benchmark scores @ 1.7
1.8 seems unstable on some of the benches like cf and antutu. But I typically just keep it at stock CPU speed anyhow, so Im not worried about it.
Some people seem to have more issues than others. Some the screen locks up on them while charging, others it wont go to sleep, some people the screen wont wake up during an incoming call.
Myself I havent had any issues really. My facebook app seems to force close quite a bit whenever I try to post on someones wall. I would like to see that fixed, but as far as I know, no one else really has that issue. So it may just be something glitchy on my phone.
But yes. Definitely try Eternity. You wont regret.
Thanks for all the suggestions guys, will definitely try out some of your suggestions!
Aside from the poor choice of thread title, we know nothing about the device. I guess I could've missed it skimming through all 2 pages. What Hboot is on the device? Figuring out which method to use and how far you'll be able to go is a good start. You should be checking out the root threads before asking about ROMs. Just a thought, not intended to be rude in any way.
Miui is the best rom hands down for looks and feel. And it gets better every week!

I agree on Deck's ROM too, but because he has gone AWOL, I've switched over to CleanROM 2.7. It's just as reliable as Deck's ROM, battery life is almost as good, but you can OC and make it FLY while still retaining excellent battery life. And... it's more customizable than Deck's ROM.
I've run both Deck's ROM and CleanROM 2.7 long term and can recommend both. I'd give the edge to CleanROM though (there's a CleanROM Developer's Edition too).
