This is koush ClockWorkMod Recovery with a Few Edit's
This will Work on any Phone That currently can Use this Recovery, but was edited for the MyTouch 3g Slide
Download here > http://www.4shared.com/file/KzYHr4U_/update.html
You at your own Risk!!
- Contains Auto Root ( Su / Superuser.apk ) If already Root, this will not effect Root & Safe to use!
See how-to Root the Slide Thread for more info.
-Contains Dusty51 script for Partitioning the a2sd & Swap
-fstab so swap will work
-Default partition table's are:
-Linux Swap @ 32mb
-ext2 a2sd partition @ 512mb
-Fat32 Partition is based on the size after the 2 above
How-to Use:
Once You load the Recovery via update.zip, Unplug & Plug the USB to make sure the Device is Seen..
- Open Command Prompt from Computer
- Adb shell
- sdparted
- Next Follow the Command, y = Y to confirm..
Note: Backup your SDCARD first, only thing should be on it is the update.zip then Follow the above to Format for a2sd support!
Thanks man.1 question tho. How do I choose which size I want the partion I have the stock 8gb card and only want to use 500mb for the swap since I watch mostly videos on my phone and don't store to many apps

500mb for Swap!!
There is never a reason to have that Much Swap.. Honestly Swap isn't needed & the Current Settings are honestly perfect for the Phone.. Even with an 8GB Sdcard
Eugene, thanks for the work on this.
I ran through the steps and formatted the SDcard, but then all my apps were gone (market too!). I'm wondering if I should have wiped first?
So I wiped, re-flashed SlideMeRoot5r1.zip, and it never comes out of the black screen/script. I waited 10 minutes (timed it) and then tried again. Still nothing.
Thoughts? Am I missing something?

Ok one more question I am on slidemeroot2 should I do this before updating to slidemeroot5 or after.
I just ran this in prep to upgrade to slideme5, I'm on 2 now.
it was painless (I'm currently restoring my sdcard contents).
I'm going to try a slide5 update without wiping to see if it works, if it doesnt then i'll just wipe but I wanteed to see first without losing my settings and stuff
The whole Reason I removed 5 & replaced with 5r1 was due to issue & error's.
If you don't wipe you will still have those same error's & issue's.

or you can just download Koush Rom Manager app that has that included.
sorry for the noob question, but what is this for exactly?
Hot diggity, now everything is being installed to SD by default. I like that.
I am going to guess that for those apps that dont play well with apps2sd, we manually move them to /data/apps/ ?
Does your latest support ext4?
Maybe that is the problem with black screen.

do the graphical errors cause any force-closes?
Downloading!
Dammit I can't wait these 300 seconds to start downloading!!!! boo!!!
Just making sure, we can do the nandroid backup of our phones from clockwork right? =)
*Edit: Seems like nandroid is preforming a full backup of my phone... decided to try running it while I downloaded this rom.
What kind of graphical errors are we talking? Worth wiping away all the work i did or will there be another wipe update soon? heh
#Edit #2: (live blogging)
Installing legend right now! When should we start thinking about partitioning our SD cards?
- that rom installed surprisingly fast....
I got the option to restore my settings from a backup on the SD card. Thats interesting. I selected yes just for kicks.
it did something for a bit but after it was done it hadn't found my gmail account. I wonder what it restored? and from where?
Well after I put in my gmail account it found my fb account and exchange account. Interesting.
Its up and running and super fast. Is there anyway i can get the black bar to the bottom of my screen? its on the side right now and its driving me crazy.

We may be running as root with this rom?
looks like the eng build.. when terminal starts you are automatically root. adb shell is the same deal.
pushed superuser.apk from the original slide root pack and it pops up when you type su in terminal (and go from a # to a #)

... dont complain, its free and works... it didnt brick your device, dont complain it'll get fixed eventually, but for right now its a hand above the bloatware **** we had on there, isnt it?
ATTENTION: Cyanogenmod version 6.1.0 has A2EXT support built into the rom so an edited boot.img is no longer needed just flash the add-on to enable it and also you must do the commands to move dalvik-cache to the EXT partition as well...
Thank You for reading this if you actually took the time to!
Ok so i decided to post some things on here. Let me explain why I did things the way I did first of all. I decided to only edit the boot.img in each of the froyo roms that we all use and post those here along with a flashable .zip file that allows you to activate apps2ext on froyo roms. I did it this way to show respect to the developers of the roms by not stealing there downloads with my own. Doing it this way means that you have to download the actual rom from them which I hope makes things better for them.
You will need to already have an EXT partition setup already to be able to do this.
To any Dev if you do not like me doing this to your rom then by all means PM me and i will remove it ASAP.
To any downloader/user if there is a rom that you want me to include that isn't or a rom that isn't Froyo let me know and i will try to get that for you ASAP.
Credit for this goes to the Dev's of each rom and the darktremor a2sd method maker:
Cyanogen and teamdouche
Tkirton
Arayray
r0man
infinitybiff
migueltherocker
XDA of course!! :-D
Everyone that uses my edits
If i didn't mention you then PM me i will add you.
Now on to the Goods:
All of these are just boot.img from each rom. This is not an one for all boot.img type thing because each rom could have done something to the boot.img that may cause a bootloop if added to a different rom.
Rename each to boot.img and place into your rom.
After that you don't actually have to do any resigning since we all are using clockwork recovery just make sure its setup to allow flashing without signatures.
This only supports EXT2 or EXT3 which is pretty much all slide users have considering its nothing new.
Download the a2sd.zip and flash it at any time after you get your base rom flashed.
I will try to keep these updated to the latest versions if there is enough demand for them. Also i will try to keep the latest 3 nightlies up-to-date.
Boot.imgs:
Boot Images Here
A2sd Enabling package
Instructions:
OK as stated above these are only boot.img.
You need to rename each to just boot.img and place them inside the rom you like.
Make sure you wipe everything and do a fresh install it helps a lot to do everything fresh. (if your worried about apps use titanium backup or some other backup app)
Flash the a2sd add-on
Once the add-on has been flashed and there aren't any problems there are a few ways to enable actual a2ext.
You can either use adb or a terminal app on your phone.
If using adb phone can be turned on or in recover with system mounted.
once you pick a way here are the commands:
(if using a terminal app skip steps 1, 2, 5, 6)
1. ./adb remount (windows: adb remount)
2. ./adb shell (windows: adb shell)
Su will be needed for terminal app and may be needed for adb method(just do it in case its needed)
3. cd /system/bin/
4. sh a2sd reinstall
some things will popup and phone should reboot
5. once rebooted ./adb remount
6. ./adb shell
7. cd /system/bin/
8. sh a2sd cachesd
more things will popup and phone should reboot. The last reboot can take 5 minutes or longer especially if you already had apps downloaded. I know on a fresh install it can take what seems like ages.
saved just in case may use this for non froyo roms or requested roms
Through some experimenting i have found out that just including the boot images into the roms without flashing the add-on pack could cause your phone to stick at the boot screen so you should always flash the add-on
Teamfenix 1.7.1 for those people that use it because they need tether support
The best backup app i have found is mybackup pro and activate the root privileges. if you dont have paid apps or just dont wanna pay it there is a free version but it only lasts a certain amount of time. it restores all apps and data without causing market problems like i have experienced with titanium backup. either/or they are both good apps but everyone has a preference.
This is great man, thanks. You saved me the time and trouble of incorporating it myself.

Just wondering... what's the difference b/w app2ext and app2fat? It seems like app2ext is better since people tend to want it
And also, if we want to partition app2ext, we can just do so via rom manager, right?

the benefits of a2ext are that you dont have to move each app as you install them. once its setup they are automatically installed to the ext partition. another thing is it doesn't matter what apps are on it they all show up without any problems unlike with the a2fat where if widgets or home apps are placed on it they disappear. also when rebooting your phone your home screen apps wont get that generic icon with a2ext like they can with a2fat. its a lot easier to partition the sdcard compared to the old android days when everything was manual so its a whole lot more appealing. plus even with a2fat your internal memory continued to decrease even if you placed them on the memory card. this is because only part of the app is moved over and also the dalvik cache for the app was left on internal. so you are still limited on how much you can download. with a2ext no internal memory is lost to apps or dalvik cache because everything is on the ext partition this would allow rom makers to add more to the data or system partitions with there rom so you can have other apps or more room for themed images that may take up more memory.
your other question yes rom manager should have the option to partition your sdcard. another option is to use gparted if you are running ubuntu there are also other programs that should work as well for other os.
on another note working on the latest nightly and will upload shortly
A question I have is that if we use the boot image for the newest Cyan nightly? What happens when we want to install a newer nightly? Do we have to patch that with the new Boot.img also?

Code:

you transposed a couple letters in cachesd.
Ok I had a 2.1 ROM with a2sd enabled and i had my ext2 partition working. I installed a 2.2 ROM and followed all directions properly. After the 2nd reboot I am not seeing my apps populate into the phone. They should still be on the ext2 partition no? Thoughts please?
If you wiped before flashing then your ext partition was wiped as well but you could try a fix permissions and see if that works

Ah crap I did do a full wipe. Trying the fix permissions now. I do have a nandroid backup of my last ROM. If this doesnt work is there a way to put that ext2 contents onto the ext2 now?
Restore the rom and use titanium backup or mybackup and backup your apps that way but I think if you pick advanced under the nandroid options you can restore only the ext partition. I never did that but a fix permissions might help with any problems

Hmm sitting at the white t-mo boot screen for quite some time now...but i remember your 1st post saying this was normal with apps on the ext2
"Error downloading app from market. There is insufficient space on the device."
That's the error that I get when I try to download big apps, like Third Blade, etc. I notice that this happens with apps that are bigger that 30mb.
I just want someone to confirm that the game can be downloaded in a Samsung Vibrant.
I really have a lot of space in my device so this is not the problem.
I'm on trigger right now.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
i have that same problem!! but only with that game and i have alot of room too
i wanna play third blade toooo
im on cm7
I had that problem on BOTH of those ROMS.
Mostly CM7.
Everyone suggested to just ODIN, it didn't work for me, so i just changed rom and it was good again?
Before doing anything, i think you should backup everything on your SD CARD, then try and format sd, and then try download.
i may be wrong.
/cache is full. Go in with root explorer or similar, and clear out some stuff. You might even need to go into /cache/dalvik and delete a few installed apps (don't fret, they should rebuild after a reboot) for it to initially fit. That's where Android places the zip before installing a new app, or an update. I go in there all the time and clear any updates or apps I just installed, and I rarely have issues with not being able to d/l larger apps. I'm on latest Trigger CM.

This would need some modification to work for CM based ROMs, but looks like its creating a cache folder on and forcing system cache to the external sd? I wonder if this would work for CM? Anyone?

This happened to me awhile back, it really sucked.
After trying everything, eventually it cleared up when I cleared dvk cache (or whatever its called) in advanced settings of clockwork

I have tried everything in this thread and all of the others I found by searching the forums.
Allow a noob to ask a question, please... What do you do with this zip?
found in /cache via root explorer a leftover 16mb apk.. deleted & market installs working again.. THANKS!
I get an Insufficient Space error every time I try to install some larger apps (latest examples: Paradise Island and Duke Nukem 3D).
I have tried every suggested fix I can find online. I have cleared the market cache, uninstalled market updates, cleared dalvik cache, cleared regular cache, checked partition usage of /data, nothing has changed this behavior.
As a final step I ODIN'd back to stock and reinstalled Bionix Nextgen V2. Made sure to do the 20 minute wait n' reboot. Tried installing the same apps via the Market once the ROM was installed and the old market doesn't even give me the error, it shows the download arrow in the notification bar for a couple seconds and then it just disappears.
I'm at my wits end on this one. Seems my choice is to either run CM7 and have non-functioning GPS or Bionix and have a semi-functioning market.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I wiped my cache partition and dalvik from recovery. Rebooted and I could now install Wind-Up Knight. It's all I had to do. CM7.
Update: For whatever reason my /cache on Bionix Nextgen V2 is set to 24.7 Mb after a fresh installation. No wonder it wouldn't install 27+ Mb apps.
I finally fixed this issue myself with a symlink:
Ran inside Terminal Emulator (you will need to run the commmand su after opening terminal emulator to get root rights):
umount /cache
rmdir /cache
mkdir /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/cache
ln -s /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/cache cache
As soon as I exited Terminal Emulator I was able to install large apps.
Update again: And now it's broken again. Cache is remounted to the old settings and the umount command now just gives me a "Failed" without any other useful error information.
HELP!!! How do I permanently fix this?
Update again v2: Rebooted into recovery, wiped cache and Dalvik, got an error indicating my sd card isn't partitioned correctly "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p2" when wiping Dalvik, but from what I'm finding online that's not a huge deal. Rebooted, ran my commands above again and cache is symlinked again, large apps install ok again.
How do I make this permanent?
Same problem, disabling Voodoo worked for me
solution worked for me like charm....
After browsing around, I found out solution:
The problem is in the cache folder (that I assume used by the market) is using small partition (around 20mb in my case).
So to solve this we need to change it to bigger partition.
1. You gonna need Android Terminal Simulator or equivalent terminal app. This will also require your Android rooted.
2. Type ’su’ (root permission request will be showned, you need to approve it).
3. Type ‘cd /’
4. Type ‘umount /cache’
5. Type ‘mount -o rw,remount -t rootfs rootfs /’ (to set the folder access to rw – read write)
6. Type ‘rmdir /cache’ (delete cache folder)
7. I personally using root explorer to do point 5-6
8. Type ‘mkdir /sdcard/cache’
9. Type ‘ln -s /sdcard/cache /cache’ (to link cache folder to /sdcard/cache – which shoud have bigger partition size)
Works like a charm!!!

This mod will move dalvik-cache from /data to /preload freeing up some space and utilizing the otherwise unused /preload partition when running a pure ICS ROM.
Based on the SGS2-CF-ROOT-XXLPH kernel.
The kernel is untouched but the init.rc script on initramdisk is modded to mount /preload with same prefs as /data normaly has.
It does not wipe or format anything, exept the dalvik-cache.
After installation, wiping dalvik-cache from CWM actually works just fine.
Flash it with CWM.
/Cheers
Can you explain better the benefits of using this? It's unclear for noobs like me.

I haven't looked at the mod yet, but if the dalvik cache is sym linked to the other partition, then it wouldn't have to rebuilt.

i've not looked at it neither, but i have used sym links before, and the files in dalvik were duplicated, one for the old dalvik-cache, plus one for the symlink
eg
[email protected]@[email protected] and [email protected]@[email protected]
PS pls correct me if i am wrong coz i tried it couple of mths b4
Thanks all for the interest.
OBSERVE! Only for XXLPH kernel.
Answers to your questions:
* Benefit: you move away 100-300Mb of data to /preload and can use more on /data to use your favorite apps.
* No, there is no duplication of files. And YES the dalvik is rebuilt, but only on the fist boot, not each time, unless you tamper with the new paths, but the script takes care of that, so dont worry.
* kernel mounts /preload with same prefs as /data, and also in RW mode.
* the script takes care of all your worries (/system/etc/init.d/S99dalvik2preload). It is written so you can remove any directory/link (/data/dalvik-cache or /preload/dalvik-cache) and your phone still boots up and rebuilds the dalvik on /preload/dalvik-cache. A symlink is created to /preload/dalvik-cache from /data/dalvik-cache and all works just as before.
Works aslo with CWM Recovery "Wipe dalvki cache" since CMW seems to mount all filesystems and respects lymlinks.
Tested and works.
No worries.
Flash it and let me know what you think.
Installed, seems to work just fine, many thanks!

Nice. Thanks for the feedback! Keep it coming.
Can you post your /data and /preload usage?
Hi guys, hope you like it.
though....
I would really like to have some input/feedback on this mod.
Feel free to comment, anytime, anywhere and anyhow.

No, not every time, just on the first execution.
I fixed the rest in my script.
Or did I missunderstand you mate?
thank you bodhisattva99 you are the best ...
is this the same with "Integrate sys Dalvik into ROM" option from Titanium Back-Up Pro?
So how long does first boot take? I'm stuck on boot logo no matter what. Once I got to the boot animation and it kept going for a good 5 minutes. Reflashing it didn't help.

hi, if i remember correctly, since the path in init.rc points to /system/framework, so the files there will be processed to dex files. i then symlinked it to /data/framework and i found files like [email protected]@[email protected] and [email protected]@[email protected]
i cant remember what else i have changed at that time but, perhaps i was not satisfied with the final result and hence stopped testing it.
anyway, i am happy to see ppl tries to find out these kind of tweaks/tricks again
good luck and carry on

No, it is not.
That option moves the dalvik cache files for /system applications into /system
Hi, great work! I have taken the liberty of rewriting your script from scratch to a new and what I believe to be a more efficient one. There is a requirement of having Busybox installed in /system/xbin. I haven't tested it myself since I do not own an SGS2, but AColwill has tested it for me and says it appears to boot faster.

Does this work on all ICS stock rooted and custom roms like XXLPQ ans LP7? Thanks

May work, version 1.5 uses the SGS2-CF-ROOT-XXLPH kernel. I'm not sure which kernel LPQ/LP7 use. Have not had time to check it out.
I will make a new one for LP7 this weekend if i can find the time.

That suckzzz...
Should just take a few seconds longer, not counting the dalvik rebuild.
What ROM are you on?

Checked out your script. Nice work.
Will try it out. This is a better solution than incorporating kernel changes, obviously...
EDIT: Flashed it and phone does not boot... stuck in bootanimation...

+1 on this one
Not unlocked yet, but I certainly +1
Will need a SuperWipe.
I could never understand whole superwipe, thing. How is it different to wipe from recovery?
And chefs could always include a script to get wipe done automatically in the rom, if wipe is required.

Because then it's just 1 process to wipe everything.
And some things that may need clearing out aren't in cache/data?
And as to the cooking in auto-wipe, that would be OK if it was used only when needed, but most likely something like that would then be included regardless and then you'd wipe even if you didn't need to.
lol, have to say. I regularly check back on these forums and cannot believe how many posts you post in. Your everywhere! Get a job! I've been here since 2006 and only have 50 odd.
Kidding mate, but it makes me laugh.....

It takes more clicks to get to siperwipe and start it than to wipe data and caches manually. I don't get the point, but each to its own I guess.

Not sure what a "SuperWipe" does exactly, but here is a script I made when I was having issues switching from different ROMS... It formats:
/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 - /system
/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 - /cache
/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 - /data
*** WARNING ***
Use this file at your own risk...
Be sure to backup any data you would like to keep, this script formats your internal SD and anything that lives on /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 (/data)
Doesn't CWM include every command you need to completely wipe your TFP before flashing a new rom?
I just got my TFP and I am going to wait a month or so before voiding my warranty by flashing a rom so I do not know what CWM options show for the TFP. On my phone, CWM can wipe user data/factory reset/format; wipe cache partition; wipe Dalvik cache; clear battery stats.

Nope It did not in my situation, I tried CWM "wipe user data/factory reset", cleared all stats and cache.. there was still stuff left over in "/data" I believe..
And all the ROMS I have come across do not format "/dev/block/mmcblk0p8",
it's Most likely because:
"/data (which is mmcblk8) contains also /data/media/" which actually is your sdcard. So wiping /data also wipes the sdcard - @Diamondback

I'm a little nervous for formatting with that. Wont it also format the internal SD? Would kind of delete the rom i was trying to flash?
Ok tried it and got an error.

Hmm strange..
What ROM are you trying to install? I can make a update-script for it that will do the wipe then install the ROM in one shot if you like..?
Or you can just do it your self...
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. open the ROM(zip file) up with 7-zip or something comparable
2. browse to: META-INF\com\google\android\
3. extract the update-script file to your desktop
4. open the "update-script" with text editor (I use Notepad++)
5. Find the section where it does the formating (You will see something like: format("ext4", "MMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p1"); )
6. Now add the following lines from the quotes (before the section that formats the system):
CACHE
ui_print("Formatting cache: /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 ext4");
format("ext4", "MMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2");
run_program("/sbin/tune2fs", "-m", "0", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2");

DATA
ui_print("Formatting data: /dev/block/mmcblk0p8 ext4");
format("ext4", "MMC", "/dev/block/mmcblk0p8");

Just the internal SDcard, you would need to use a "external sdcard" which is located somewhere in "/dev/block/vold/" (It won't touch the external sd)

I install tons of apps and therefore it takes an unknown amount of time every time I manually wipe all three. I don't want to have to baby-sit my phone for 5 minutes just to wipe three directories, so I run SuperWipeG2+; then my phone can be unattended and will vibrate me to alert me the format is finished and recovery is rebooting. Then I proceed with flashing/restoring/whatever.

Ok i was under the impression that you could not flash a rom from external sdcard.
\MicroSD\Rom\jermaine151_9.4.2.15.zip is where it is on my external sd card.

here is a update script ONLY for: jermaine151_9.4.2.15
It will format /data
Just remove the ".txt" extension and drag it into the zip file:
jermaine151_9.4.2.15.zip\META-INF\com\google\android\
I was able to get my pad working again by modifing that jermaine151 updater-script. i changed the mmcblk1 to 2 and i did not see a format for the mmcblk08 so i changed the mount to a format and added the run command. Crossed my fingers and prayed i did not end up with a huge brick lol. It seemed to flash really fast. then i realized i had keys back to working and rom functioning correctly again. i then factory reset and went to flash the jermaine again but the sdcard was empty lol. had to go back and move a unmodified copy of jermaine to my now factory restored sdcard and reflashed all is well in the Stealtheee house again ! YAY ! Thanks so much. all the normal formats in the world were doing jack didily.
