Hello to Everyone!
If you are like I was, stuck on FRF91 without being able to downgrade to get root, or if you just want to be able to flash to any earlier version Nexus One rom, then this post is for you.
FRF91 does not allow you to flash to just any earlier version rom so for this tutorial, we will be using the EPE76 rom that I have already renamed to passimg.zip which allows us to bypass this limitation. The steps provided in this tutorial are all done on a stock t-mobile Nexus one with a locked bootloader, this is especially useful for people who wish to use the rooting method without unlocking the bootloader. If you already have an unlocked bootloader, there is no reason to follow this guide.
"Update" confirmed to also work on at&t nexus one
Notice: after you do this you will have to redownload your apps.
Steps:
1. Transfer the provided passimg.zip file to the root of your sd card.
2. Power down your phone.
3. Hold down the Volume Down button as you power your phone back on.
4. A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. This will take up to 2 minutes.
5. The phone will ask you if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to start the update.
6. If you followed these steps correctly, Congratulations, you are now on stock EPE76 Android 2.1 and able to flash to any official Nexus One rom that has been released.
If this guide helped you please let people know, the more posts there are, the more comfortable other people will feel to follow this guide.
Just helping the OP out.

Doesn't work.
'update failed - file is older!'
thanks for helping with the links.
bookmarked!!!
@ Amdathlonuk
If you received that error, then it was not done correctly. I downgraded from FRF91 two times before posting the tutorial and it worked both times, please make sure to follow the guide 100% exactly as posted or it won't work. Thanks.
If you already have your bootloader unlocked, a very much simple approach that doesn't require you to downgrade to stock and erase all your data is this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_Nexus_One_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
Except of course, you don't need to flash the radio (since you have it already in FRF91) and instead of flashing CyanogenMod, you would flash any repacked and rooted FRF91 update.zip like this one.
@ asero
This method is for people who don't necessarily want to unlock their bootloaders. Thanks for pointing that out, I have updated my posting.
OMG, I was stuck on frf91 for the past 3 days after manually updating like an idiot. You saved me from a lot of headaches. Very easy tutorial. Donation on the way. Thank You.
Thanks very much
Is EPE76 only for T-mobile phones or is it safe for ATT phones as well?
I have tried this and several files to downgrade, none worked. I wonder if the fact I used the "universal" 85b update that flashes the whole device.
I don't think that is the problem because I myself used frf85b universal after doing the steps posted above and then rooted successfully following the how to root nexus one without unlocking the bootlowder tutorial.

I've got unrooted nexus and it's at&t's version.
will this Downgrade method work for me?
Is there any risk in it?
tnx!
To be honest, I don't know if it will work on an at&t nexus because I don't have one, but it should work on it if the epe76 nexus rom is compatible with it.

Could I get a download link to the universal 85b zip to do this please. The Google download is not working it shows that the file is not found. Would appreciate it very much

I'm sorry if this has been discussed ad nauseam.
I have an HTC Aria of which I have updated to the official 2.2.2.
what I want to do is simply completely erase the phone and instal the latest stable cyanogenmod.
I have followed all the links.

I just don't know where to begin at all. I don't know the terms. clockworkmod, fastboot, recovery, etc etc.
I haven't done anything with the phone at all because I'm too scared I'm going to end up with a brick.
if someone could just lay out the process for me step by step. of going to official 2.2 to cyanogenmod I would appreciate it sooooooooooooooo much.
I'm sorry I've failed at the forums but I just feel so overwhelmed.
thank you.

The last 2 links are the only ones you need to concentrate on. Since you have Froyo update 2.2.2 AlphaRevX is the only option you have to unlock your phone so that you can ultimately install CM 7.
First you need to follow the AlphaRevX thread to gain S-OFF (security off) on your Aria. Just a note, in these 2 threads, you need to remember that an Aria = HTC Liberty.
After you run AlphaRevX, then you will follow the steps that attn1 outlined in the 2nd post to install ClockworkMod recovery which will allow you to ultimately flash CM 7.
sigh. thanks for the help but I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing.

Well at least you have:
1. Updated your Aria to the latest Froyo 2.2.2 (without bricking it)
2. Found this site and forum.and asked some questions
Depending on your technical level, I would read through those 2 threads. I know several of the posts had step by step instructions. They may be too technical, but it should at least help you narrow down what to google and search for to help you learn and gain some knowledge on how to procede.
I just followed this post:

Might want to replace the launcher with Launcher Pro. It is 2x smoother than the default ADWLauncher.
Other than that, go and have fun with your rooted phone! Just make sure to nandroid backup before you make any drastic changes.
Finally, light at the end of the tunnel. I was beginning to lose hope about my 2.2.2 Aria. Can't wait to get started.
i go into the dev section and i go into http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1509855 and there are so many links to different threads and its like go here for this and go here for that can someone make a thread for noobs like me with everything in the same thread with a step by step guide
Use the search.button bro.. U can root your phone with odin in about 10 seconds.

Alright so you said you wanna root but the link you provided was for a ROM. So which one are you looking for?
Root basically unlocks your phone to allow you to access your system files and make changes. So you can delete those annoying apps that come with your phone or allows you to use some apps that require root like titanium backup.
A ROM is basically a whole new software for your phone. like having windows xp and changing it to windows 7 or a better version of xp.
Here is a link for a Root for your phone. Super easy to use. Just follow the guide.

if you have anymore questions just reply here and ill try to answer them.
like they said, follow the links, unlike most phones, its REAL easy to root with odin

Root first....then eventually some nice developers will start posting their ROMS...either custom created and/or ported from other phones. They typically will put together step-by-step instructions in their posts, if nothing else, to avoid 8 million questions on how to load their ROM. If not, then i wouldn't bother with that particular ROM.
For example, Cyangenmod is a popular ROM that MIGHT be ported to the AT&T Note. If so, it will have very clear installation instructions http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ . MIUI.us is another popular ROM that might someday be ported over to the AT&T Note.
You might want to cruise over to the International Note Development forum and look at some of their ROM threads to get a feel for "how to" install a ROM. It will take a few times and you'll be able to load ROMS w/your eyes closed. Remember though the international roms will not work on our at&t note.
how to root AT&T Note.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504218
anyway, just my thoughts.
Just to clarify Philly- those roms for the international note are not compatible with our att note. Do not flash them. Just learn the procedure and wait for att roms to start being posted here in this forum.
thanks for the feedback and help i have rooted my note and enabled free tethering now i will wait for some kool roms to try out hopefully ics lol but i didnt see a quide for installing custom roms is there one ?
another pointer to a root guide
Andrawer is correct and I believe that root option works. As a lot of people have said it is very important to read then read some more. I had concerns about root method Andrawer also found, so I kept searching. I found a great step by step summary by Capite post #87 of the [SYSTEM] ATT Galaxy Note Root, and it worked perfect for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22920576&postcount=87
The big issue addressed by this method was avoiding the Flash Counter, so that there would be no warranty concerns. Simple easy instructions and I had my Note rooted in less than 3 hours of purchase.

I just performed this on my Atrix 4G that was running 2.3.6 Stock exactly 7 days ago. It was the first time I had ever done anything to my phone since the last AT&T update. I had root before the update, but it was taken away when I applied the update. Since Motorola doesn't want to do a major update for my phone (Boo to them!), I decided to try flashing CM7 Olympus, and now I wish I had done it sooner!
I didn't check the links above, but I followed these instructions to the letter: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423
The process made me nervous, but it worked perfectly!
EDIT: Those are the closest instructions I could find to the original ones I had. I found the ones I actually used on Atrix Forums' website. The article is called "[TUT]Unlocking Bootloader and Installing Custom ROMs" (I'm too new to link to an external site due to forum regulations.)
Unlocked same version from ATT
I had to flash 4.1.83 sbf. The regular unlock process. But be careful as it could brick your phone. I experimented and luck was on my side.
Thanks,
Jinesh

Followed those instructions as well. I feel like I am very close to having my phone back to where it needs to be for me to consider the mission a success I am only experiencing an issue adding Google accounts and getting into the android Market. I did a titanium backup restore and got all of my apps back and restored system settings, but Gmail crashes every time I try to open it and the Market opens a white window then goes away without any warning or error info.
I haven't flashed a custom rom so I am still in the stock Gingerbread ROM.
Trying to add a Google account gives me the message "Can't Establish a reliable connection..." If I followed this guide, am I fine to do a hard reset, as that is the only solution I have found online to the Can't Establish connection error?
Original Post Deleted: Oops moment
If your intentions were to flash a custom rom, I would perform a nandroid backup and then flash away following the instructions you've been using.
If you unlocked the bootloader, your phone was probably returned to stock just like performing a hard reset. Google Play (or Market) usually needs a very good connection to run its first update, so if you're not on wifi, connect to that first. If you still have that problem, try clearing the data for that app (from the home screen > Menu > Manage Applications > "Market" > Clear Data)
If you were trying to flash a fruitcake (to return it to stock after flashing a custom ROM), still try clearing the app data and, if that doesn't work, try flashing the fruitcake again.
Lucky for me I have the only version of the Note 2 with a locked Bootloader from "BigRed". i came here to ask for assistance because I want to use my device to its full potential but I definately do not want to brick my device or harm it in anyway.
What I am confused about is the whole process of unlocking the boot loader and rooting. I have read extensively on how to do both but I don't know what process I need to do first. Do I root first and then unlock the boot loader?? Or Vice Versa??
I am also skeptical about some of the Boot loader Unlock methods I see floating around online. I have read up on a couple different ways to do it but when reading the comments under the tutorial article it seems there are alot of unhappy Note 2 owners that were not successful with the methods What I am asking here is if someone can point me to the CORRECT way to unlock the boot loader with the most up to date information regarding the latest update Verizon has put out. If I can be pointed to a good article on the correct way to root the device that would be even better.
I obviously know there is no "fail safe" way of going about doing this and completely understand all the risks. I just want to minimize those risks. Especially on a $600+ device!
Thank you for any help that is offered!!
A little tip for you. I've found is best to just stick strictly to xda for guides like this. Most those random guides steal the work of the hard working devs here. I've seen a lot of bricks of people just following one if them.
Here is the only way to unlock. It's easier then it looks.

^ what he said :good:
i used that method literally 2 days ago. it's really simple. just click and follow instructions. just follow the guide and you can even watch the youtube video of someone doing it before you do. once you have the bootloader unlocked and twrp flashed (one you finish the guide you will have twrp installed) you can hold the power volume up and home button while the device is off to boot into recovery (twrp). from there before you do anything i would recommend flashing the latest twrp and then you can go ahead and flash whatever roms you want. probably gunna want to stick with clean rom. it's basically stock rom with all the scum removed and a lot of root tools added.
Can I piggyback here?
My similar question is that when I got my phone 2 weeks ago the Verizon salesperson did THE UPDATE when he setup my phone. My system says I have 4.1.1 but otherwise I have not done a thing to it. Do you need to know the kernal version?... Which steps do I use to unlock and root to Cleanmod? Thanks.

use the method linked above! It works for both firmware versions that are currently available.
also very easy given that you follow the instructions
As others have said, follow the directions. Go slowly, measure twice and cut once. Then you can start feeding the ROM flashing addiction.
Hello everyone, this is my first post in the forum.
I own atrix 4G AT&T, and used in India right now. It was unlocked by code, so I regularly update it OTA whenever updates available from AT&T. I always come here and read here and there. Now I decided to flash ROM to explore Android v4.
And I decide to flash 'That ROM' shows as this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1928844, followed that guide step by step and unfortunately, become soft brick. please note that, I followed guide for root : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769497 but I think it was necessary to unlocked bootloader too (? not sure).
Next I googled for the solution and found this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423 , followed the steps prior to proper recovery and unlocked the boot loader, booting into Android v 4.0.4. I really enjoy it with some minor issue.
Now, I have some question or doubts :
1) I recover and unlocked the boot-loader as per instruction given, do I need to do follow the steps of PROPER RECOVERY ?
2) I found that, after the whole process, the boot-loader is unlocked, but do not have root access, is there any method to root 'That Rom' ?
3) Is it possible to flash [ROM] AtrICS v2.0 by Team Hope [build: 20121114] ? without root ?
Thank you and Good-Day !
Why do you want to flash an unstable and quite obsolete ROM?
Thank for the reply, Not particularly atrICSv2 but, looking around for an option. Any suggestion? Any thought on my doubts?
