Does anyone know of an app that will Use the HD2 camera, and possibly the led flash, to display a live magnified image on screen? Essentially turning the HD2 into a magnifying glass (possibly with light)?
Ive got a friend who is partially sighted and often uses a magnifying glass with a built in 'torch' light, to read print/text while out and about.... having an app that would do the same thing could prove very handy at times.
Anyone know of such a thing? Everytime I try searching I just get apps that magnify whatever is on the screen and cant magnify a live image from the camera.
Thanks in advance.
iam sorry for asking, but could using the zoom feature of camera with flash on...doesnot serve the purpose ?
Thanks for the suggestion... However I had already thought of this... The main problem being that my flash will not light until I take a picture.
Previously my flash would stay lit during preview if the flash ON option was selected.... but this is no longer the case (possibly since flashing to EnergyRom).
Plus having a dedicated app would be more convenient.
Cheers for the suggestion though

Put it in video mode and you can force the flash on or use torch button and leave it running when you start the camera up.
yes, you can use the torch application and keep it on while you use your camera
The LED turns off if the Torch app (Flashlight) is not the active application.
You can do what optiknervz suggested which is use the Video mode and then turn on the flash, unless of course you want a still photograph of whatever it is that you are trying to zoom into.

the phone comes stock with htc's flashlight that give you 3 modes of brightness, blinking and sos... also you can change the buttons in the key layout to wake without an app theres more on that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836702
he is correct and i was using no lock but be very careful because the genius button can place calls on its own if you have no lock enabled that gets kinda funny when you "butt dial" friends lol and i find the stock HTC flashlight app to work flawlessly already so no need for 3rd party apps.
Two things about the Evo LTE dedicated camera button.
1. When the phone is locked should this turn the camera on after a few seconds? I cannot get mine to do it.
2. I was using the camera in the dark with Auto Flash on and the flash did not flash when using the dedicated camera button. If I use the soft button on the screen it would work.
Any thoughts on either of these two items would be appreciated.

your first point is as designed the second point is probably a software bug
I noticed this problem too, and I just got the phone yesterday. I found that if you press the camera button quickly all the way that it will flash. It just doesn't flash if you do the half press first.
My auto flash works with fast full or half to full press from hardware button. However, I cannot get the camera button to launch the camera from the lock screen. I could have sworn that I saw review vids showing this feature.

are you sure they weren't just pulling the camera shortcut into the unlock ring?
I cant say Ive heard of the camera button waking the phone. I know if you have it unlocked you can hold the button down and the camera will turn on no matter what screen you are on.
I sure hope there's some software updates coming soon, mainly to address memory management issues with Sense 4, but I would also love a more functional hardware camera button. I may just be ranting, but it honestly sucks. It's a 2-step button, but the first step doesn't do anything. I would love it to auto-focus at least, and properly control the flash would be amazing as well. The camera UI could use some tweaks also. The camera has a very powerful auto-focus, but a cross-hair type box wouldn't hurt so that we have a better idea of what exactly is being focused. Also, how about some AF metering settings? Taking a portrait of something when there's lots of light in the background will create a very dark, underexposed picture (of the primary target).
I think the camera is very powerful, and would love to see HTC make the software just as powerful... or at the very least fix the things that are broken.
Is there a flashlight app that I can run in the background and use the video camera at the same time? I want to record videos at night and can't find a torch that does this
i dont have an answer for your question, but i can tell you that creating so many threads is only going to annoy people.
Best of luck searching for your app
Regards
Jack
"Tiny flashlight + LED" did do this when I had my Dell streak and recorded a few videos with not much light. I've not tested it on the S3 and I have a low battery so can't now. Just turn it on and press your home button to leave it lit up and then try the camcorder.

It just says "Camera Failed" when I try open the camera up, is there a way around this?
Stock widget "Assistive Light" works perfectly with stock camera/video app. Tested now with leaked DLI5 version.

Just use the stock camera app, set it to video and then set flash to on. When you press record, the flash comes on and stays on until you press stop. Same feature was on the SGS2 and gingerbread.

Anyway of turning down the brightness of the flash?
Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right forum, this is my first thread
I am having a problem with ANY AOSP rom I ve installed, no matter wich kernel I try with the rom. When taking a picture with flash in auto mode or ON mode, the phone shuts off and I ve to pull out my battery to reboot. It happens 8/10 times. With flash OFF it works OK
I ve reading lots of threads of people with similar problem even in different devices (nexus, etc). The weird thing is that in tw rom (wanamlite) or any stock sammy rom, the camera and flash works flawless.
I ve tried almost everything. I really want to switch to CM or PA with Halo and this is backing me down.
I ve read in other threads that sometimes is has something to be with the battery but I ve tried 3 different batteries, 2 original and a chinese one, tried taking pictures with battery full, battery low.. and still shutting off on AOSP and flawless on touchwiz.
I ve tried every single camera app in the store. All shutting off my phone in AOSP and working in touchwiz.
however I discovered that with the flash in TORCH MODE (allways on) I can take pictures without any problem. Tasker has an option to take pictures and set the flash to torch and this is what I am using. However, its anoying to use this workaround because with tasker I cannot see what I am taking photo at. And with a camera app that supports torch mode, the flash is allways on, not only when press the take photo button.
I am trying to make tasker turn flash on, press take picture button, and turn flash off, so I can create a scene over the camera app button to make tasker run this task (or use overlays to make a floating widget)
I managed to find the tasker way to press the take photo buton (input keyeven 27), and I tried to use tasker and TESLAflashlight to turn on and off the flash before an after the picture, but teslaled doesnt work while the camera is in use by the camera app.
However, if I use the system widget to toogle flashlight or the flashlight app that comes with CM, the flash on and off switch works while the camera is open!
The problem is that I cannot make tasker interact with the flashlight widget (it is not a shorcut so i cannot use autoshortcut)
Is there a shell command to run in terminal emulator that can turn on/off the flashlight while the camera app is in use? That would solve everything for me..
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance, wonderfull comunity, and sorry for my bad english..

Same problem with both.
Also tried Camera zoom Fx, Camera 360, Pro HDR, Camera JB+, Camera MX, etc... also same problem..

All those camera's that you also tried, just use the existing software and libraries so if your main cam was not working, they definitely wouldn't either.
The TW port isn't fully functional. You'd need to stay with AOSP cameras.
When you say every AOSP ROM you tried, could you name some? It might be a camera firmware issue. There is a thread about camera firmware somewhere.

I ve tried paranoid android 3.97, cyanogenmod 10.1 , temasek 4.2.2 and temasek 4.3, cdroid, and in each test I tried siyah kernel, googy max, and of course the kernels that comes with that roms by default..
I ve also tried the huawei camera..
I ve updated the camera firmware in the way this threads mentions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2113526)
NOW MY FIRMWARE IS LIKE THIS
Phone/CAM FW Ver Check:
REAR CAMERA:
Cam FW VER: ZDFF03 / (I used to have ZDFE02)
Phone FW Ver: ZDFI02
FRONT CAMERA
CAM&PHONE: S5K6A3
The same problem of phone shutting off used to happened before I updated the firmware..
Really driving me nuts
EDIT:
Now I ve updated the firmware once again and now It is like this
Cam FW VER: ZDFI02
Phone FW Ver: ZDFI02
booted into temasek and the problem persist
:/
Sorry - I do not know the problem then

UPDATE:
I ve realized that the problem has place only when my battery is below 60%. I am thinking thas the problem has to be with battery/voltage/etc..
The weird thing is that I ve got 3 batteries and in all 3 of them happens the same. And stranger than that, is the fact that on touchwiz I can take pictures with flash even when 5% battery.(so its not a hardware problem)
Maybe AOSP roms have a different way of managing voltages. I ve tried to use steaks and reduce cpu/gpu voltages a little but it didnt help.
I will buy a new battery different to the original ones that i have and try again.
If someone is interested I share my workaround.
I use tasker and use "take picture" using torch mode (I made an scene over the shutter button of the aosp camera app so when I click on it tasker takes the picture). The problem here is that the pictures are stored in tasker folder, so sometimes it takes a while to appear in the gallery.
Or the other method I am using is the following. I used overlays to put a invisible widget toggle of the system flashlight on top left corner of aosp camera, and another invisible widget over the shutter button to trigger a tasker task. The tasker task consist of a couple of console lines that simulates myself touching the screen, so it simulates a touch that toggles de flashlight, then simulates a camera button press and then again simulates a click over the flashlight widget to turn it off.
I know this sucks, but is the only way so far
I ve managed to find a workaround with tasker only
su -c "echo 1 > /sys/class/camera/rear/rear_flash" (turn flash on)
input keyevent 27 (take photo)
su -c "echo 0 > /sys/class/camera/rear/rear_flash" (turn flash off)
The result is pretty the same that the camera flash on.. no blurry pictures, torch duration the same, etc.. so thats it for me..
I hope this can be usefull for people having the same problem.
I tried taking a picture at 30% with "A better camera" with flash and it worked on CM, but with the default camera app the phone goes black
This has been pestering me for quite a while now, at first it started below 20% battery, then 30% and now 50% ... I've ordered a new battery yesterday and I have it charging now, will know when its below 50% when it's any better.
Maybe it has to do with the camera firmware, but I doubt it.
Solved. Was the battery in my case. The 3 batterys. I think that messing around with charging voltaje in stweaks made my batterys gone bad. I ve ordered 3 chinese new batterys and now never shutsoff

Same here, bought a new battery and the problem is solved. Can snap a photo with flash at 2-3% battery left now.
Does anyone else have this issue?
I know you can select the Flash as Auto / ON / or OFF... when I select Flash ON and tap the screen to focus on an area, I would normally suspect to flash to light up so I can focus on an area. However it does not come on at all. But will come on to take the picture, but the picture will be blurry because it cannot focus on the spot I want.
Love the phone overall, bought it through Samsung. Just waiting for a good root to come along the way.

I noticed the same but if I are the picture, the flash turns on and the autofocus is working and after the folks is right the photo is taken.
But as you said no flash when using tap to focus. That was there on the S8.
Could this be a bug in the OS? Haven't tried contacting Samsung yet to report this, but wanted to make sure if others are having the same issue too.

Yes it should be. Or Samsung made this.
Please report it to them.
Same here. Flash does not come on when you tap the screen on auto flash.
Spoke with a customer expert and even tried the phone in safe mode as he suggested. He stated that if it existed in safe mode, it is a software issue. And yes the issue stays within safe mode, his only suggestion was to take it to a Samsung Repair center. In my case, I will just wait for a hotfix or patch. Unless xda beats samsung to it first haha.
Got a reply again from Samsung care page, apparently the features were removed on the s9. I guess they are now wanting to reimplement it since most are complaining on it.
Found out if you want the flash to come on before taking a picture, just tap the shutter button for 1 second and then slide your finger off it and the flash will go off without taking a picture.

But that activates burst shot. And if sliding it, it would create a floating button. Unless I'm missing the ''shutter'' button you are talking about.
