i've got a g1, which i love but i don't have tmobile service, instead verizon... plan to get a droid eris.
anyways i've done some research and read the faq's...
faq's say you can only achieve root if you have android 1.5 on your phone still and not 2.1
however... i've found it on other places it doesn't matter if you have 1.5 or 2.1 (if it's official), but that it matters on which version of HBOOT. anything below 1.49 is fine. am i correct in thinking this, or can someone explain what i need to look for in buying a phone. if i am correct, can someone please update the faq's. very confusing.
i appreciate it. i've been lurking this forum for awhile, but just decided to register.

Hi guys.
So recently i got my very first touch phone.
I've had a sony ericsson w800i for like 6-7 years now.
So i'm really all new to the entire touchmobile scene and stuff.
Rooting sounds interesting, but i have no idea if i can even do it on my mobile, let alone do it without bricking the phone.
Now i got a lot of questions and rooting does sound interesting.
But i was still hoping people here could maybe guide a new guy in the right direction?
I've read this article : Erhm, can't post links yet it seems. But it was the link to a wiki article about why one should root his phone.
and it sounds very good.
My phone model is: HTC Hero
Firmware: 1.50
Basebandversion: 63.18.55.06EU:6.35.06.18
Kernal system: 2.6.27-8dd6deee
Version: 2.73.405.6 CL#61267 release-keys
softwareversion: 1.0.0.A6288
Can i root my phone?
I'm not bound to any telemarketing company or anything. The phone itself is not from vodafone or anything of likes.
And also, if i do decide to root my phone, would i be able to install the 2.1 sense update thats scheduled for the htc hero something in april(hopefully)?
Best regards
Kuresu
Im also new here, been reading up on Android for a while though.
What i can say for sure is, YES, you can definately root your Hero. There are are number of different guides on here.
And secondly, rooting shouldn't affect you being able to get the 2.1 update once it is available, infact, if you root, youe can try 2.1 roms NOW.
A good place to start is the "XDA-Wiki", there is a link on the brown bar near the top of the page. Once you have clicked that link, on the new page it brings up, go about half way down the page to the HTC section, click "HERO". On that page, under "rooting" there is a link called "Method 1 - Dayzee's NEWBIE Walkthrough guide". That should be all the info you need. I have not done it myself yet, my new Hero should be delivered tomorrow.
Good luck!
Thanks a bunch Ddot.
Have you gotten your phone yet?
Did you root yours?
Theunlockr.com is a great source for rooting etc (newbies are often pointed to that site)

Yep yep yep,... It was delivered last Friday,... I haven't put it down since!!!
Yeah I rooted mine,... Followed this guide,... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253 ...Then installed the latest Modaco Custom ROM.
I decided not to play with the 2.1 ROMs as there were a few bugs reported.
The Modaco ROM is excellent, no complaints about the phone whatsoever. Now patiently waiting for an official 2.1 ROM.
If there's anything else you need to know, ask away, I've learnt a lot this past week, and if I cant help, there are plenty of others ready , willing and able.
P.S,... Apologies for the late reply, I didn't subscribe to the thread so wasn't notified of replies. I'll do it now though.
Peace
This is my first post here, I've been trying to learn more about the android OS, and have been using this forum for about 2 months, this is my first post.
This question has to have been answered somewhere already, but I have not found it, and I sweared I have spent alot of time looking (its possible because I'm just unfamiliar with the lingo I missed it)
I updated my eris with 2.1 OTA leak (I believe what its being called). Is there any way for me to now go to a rooted rom, or downgrade and then get root?
Again, apologies for this question, but I've given up on trying to figure this out for myself...
I'm in the same boat you are, no , there is no way to get rooted atm.
If you installed the leak, there is no way for you to root at the moment.
My Eris has HBOOT 1.49 S-ON. I'm new to this. I can't upgrade untill next year so I've been reading alot of these forums and I would like to root my phone so I can increase the processer speed and to get 2.2 on it. Some people say a phone with this hboot can't be rooted and others say it can be. Everything I've read is a couple of months old. Are there newer post. Is there a simple way to do it if it can be done like maybe a one step or something. I'm a layman at this stuff so if some of you guy's could help I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm not sure which one the 1.49 is but just get the latest Verizon OTA update (the latest 2.1 update should lead you right to it) which was from July then find the one click root method in I think the Amon_RA thread in the development section.

This thread belongs in Q&A. The Development forum is for development of new roms, kernels and radios, and the discussion of these developments.
Also, the answer to your question is in this sticky at the top of this forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
How to restore to stock.
Look at the stickies of this section. If it was a snake it would have bit you.
People are gonna be mean to you : /
I just wasnt sure if that would work so i ask and i know ppl will be mean. I always make sure to ask before doing
1. belongs in Q & A
2. you do not need to unroot and re-root to flash new radios or roms or RUU's. If you are rooted...you can do whatever you want
3. Stickied in this forum just above your post are guides to both rooting and returning to stock.
Tons of ppl have already asked just take the time to read. Reading Sucks donkey balls but if you aren't willing to read then you aren't gonna be allowed to play this game.
YEA!!! and if you ask a question in the wrong section again, mean people will track you down and beat you! cause its easier to do that than just answer a question!
Not to be rude but don't you think if it didn't work it wouldn't be stickied?
I get to leave work in 20 minutes. Yay.

i found the same post in Q& A for the incredible so I was skeptical on the Tutorial linked but it worked ....
I know there are a thousand threads on Rooting/Unlocking and Custom ROM's for the Atrix, because I've spent the last 3 days reading every one I could find. However, most of them appear to be very dated and often conflicting. As I'm coming to the game a little late I was hoping for some assistance on how to proceed.
Here's what I have;
AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G (I bought this new under contract, kept it for 2 years, upgraded to another phone and this one has been a paperweight for the past 18 months) AT&T will give me an unlock code if I ask, but I'm a little confused by the conflicting reports on whether to do it this way or not.
It's an MB860
FW Version 4.5.141
OS Version 2.3.6
Baseband N_01.77.37P
Webtop WT-1.2.0-110_OLY-6
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
Build 4.5.141
I'd like to Unlock it so I can run a Foreign SIM card, I'd like to Root it so I can add non-approved apps, and I'd like to play with some ROM's, Redpill has some very good user reviews so I'm thinking of giving it a try but I'm not stuck on it.
Obviously don't want to brick the phone, so any advice would be appreciated, the more detailed the better
I have Windows 8.1, Mac OS X, and Windows XP-SP3 computers to work with.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
While certain threads are (or might seem) outdated and/or conflicting, there are also other threads that serve as a kind of index of the most current methods and procedures. That should help you get around. Plus there are threads and guides written especially for noobs...
Yes, the code from AT&T is the safest and simplest way to do SIM unlock. Only important point here is that the device must be running the official Moto/AT&T firmware at the time of unlock. I'm not sure what kind of "conflicting information" you came across, to my knowledge nobody who's used the code as described never had any problems.
As for rooting, regardless of the variant or firmware version of your device, the preinstall method is the one to use. By far the most universal, plus personally and generally I dislike any "automatic", "one-click" or similar methods - for me at least they are usually more trouble than they're worth.
As for playing with ROMs, you first need to unlock your BL, then install a custom recovery, and then you have a shot at ROMs. So quite a wide topic with plenty enough threads created on the subject, so no point in repeating what's already said countless times. By the time you're done with other things mentioned (SIM unlock, rooting) you should be able to find your way around.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've requested an unlock code from AT&T, should be good to go in 48 hours.
In the mean time, is it important that I have it unlocked before I root, or will it matter?
Update
I realize this may seem to be off-topic but I'm not asking for assistance with this newest update, I'm only using the experience to help clarify my concerns about the Atrix.
Waiting for my requisite 24 hours before unlocking the SIM on my Moto Atrix. While I'm waiting i decided to gain a little experience by rooting a Galaxy S5570 and installing a custom Rom.
Like the Atrix there are dozens if not hundreds of threads, videos, tutorials etc for how to accomplish this. I found the most recent one I could that seemed to be a complete tutorial and it was dated from January of this year (much newer than any threads I've found on the Atrix BTW)
Rooting went fine. Confirmed with a Root Test app.
Loaded a CWM 6.0.4.5 recovery package as instructed and ended up bricking the phone. By all accounts this tutorial was for the exact model of phone with the exact same FW and Android version.
This is no big loss as it was a cheap phone that I wasn't using anyway, but it certainly opened my eyes to the risks involved in attempting this procedure on the more costly Atrix.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could point me in the direction of a current procedure for Rooting, Unlocking the Bootloader and installing a custom ROM on the Atrix with the specs from my Original Post. If any of you have the same phone and had success following a particular procedure I would greatly appreciate some links.
I know how forums work, and I know there are always the guys that reply RTFM to every noobs questions, as someone with technical skills in other areas I can generally tell the difference between someone who just doesn't want to bother doing the Due Diligence and someone who is struggling to sort through the myriad solutions to find the one that's right. I really don't want to brick this phone so any pointed advice would be greatly appreciated.

Meanwhile you have ROMs all over the place here in the Atrix 4G section of xda that you are not going to go download, rather you are going to request a ROM for the phone instead. Head over to the development section and download a ROM instead of requesting the necessary resources that are already available to you.
