hi all need urgent advice as ive killed my hd2
i was fearful of upgrading to new rom from htc website (v-1.66...)
was using 1.48.405.2 (71294) wwe
I made sure i researched everything 1st. i downloaded trial of spb backup. installed to phone. did full backup, saved to sd card. closed all progs, phone & pc
opened rom update and followed instructions. update then finished, went through setup on phone.
all seemed fine. basic clock, time settings (few new features etc)
I then went to file explorer/storage card and opened spb backup file. clicked next throughout. device reset on its own and loaded with new rom number on startup.
Problem!!!!
have my background image up pictures seem to be back, as are messages. cab files ive installed are present but I cant access contacts and a few other features.
repeated messages are 'a problem has occured with cprog.exe' please tell microsoft blah blah!!!
Htc sense will not launch despite how hard i hit the screen.
Ive no signal at all and cant sync with my pc. i guess suggestions of a hard reset will follow this post but will i not be in the same boat as i will need to restore my settings etc from sd card and spb backup.
please help!!!
try to flash the rom again or try to use your old one.

ok. will try
shouldprob mention that i got a strange message when trying to restore
'this device is different from one which this backup was made. please choose upgrade mode'
then a dropdown menu with
'normal mode'
'rom upgrade mode'
'device upgrade mode'
with a check box 'overwrite existing files' (this is checked)
seems strange but the message before states that the backup was created on an t-mob leo device.
something wrong here maybe???
yeah could be.
sorry mate, i'm not very knowledged about spb backup

sp backup has a "rom upgrade" option i'm guessing you usedthat? in which case that's the problem, because it really means upgrade of the same rom, whereas you have a totally new rom, so should use the individual settingsoption, and reinstall your programs manually.
(based on reading, i've never done it myself, nor used sp backup)
re flash your original rom, restore your backup and think again how and what you are backing up.
just tried a 'normal restore' as the description says restore to original device backup was made on.
phone has now turned on with everything the same as i left it but looking at the software description its gone back to the original rom 1.48.405.2
do i have to run the update again?
what the hell is going on with this phone!!!
no, the rom is the new rom, but thats a fine example of whats wrong.
It has restored the rom version info from your registry backup.
The rom version is not a problem, of course, it just says teh wwrong thing, but there are likely to be loads of reg settings that ARE a problem.
Basically, using backup software can be a pain, till you know its pitfalls. Thats why i dont bother. Contacts/calendar via outlook, and thats it. Everything else i setup manually myself. (Well, i dont cos by now i've made cabs for all my tweaks and what not, but tyou get the idea.)
This is one of the main reasons I don't backup Settings and Programs. I only back up my PIM, and sometimes even that plays up.
You are better off just syncing your phone with Outlook, hardreset, sync again to get your PIM information, and reinstalling your programs one by one.
I can tell you this I use SPB backup all the time, but ...
1.) Normal restore is only for restoring to the EXACT same ROM that you had on before ..
2.) ROM upgrade mode is only good for ROMs in the same series*
*ROM upgrade mode only works correctly on "upgraded" version of the same ROM you had on it , for example, in my case I use Energy ROM CHT 23569 JUL 1st, I make a backup, then upgrade to Energy ROM CHT 23569 JUL 16th, then ROM upgrade mode should work, but if you go say from a Stock TMO rom to a custom rom or a 21xxx series rom to a 23xxx series rom you will have "ISSUES".
If you plan on flashing ROMs often , you either need to learn to use something like XDA_UC, Sashimi, or Toms Autoinstall, and make frequent PIM backups ..
As well as keeping all your program cabs in a safe organized place so you can put them back on ...
I hope this helps you get it sorted ....

I have (had...) a German lang. T-Mobile MDA II. Upgraded to 1.60, thinking that solves the german language problem smoothly. IT DID!
BUT:
When I want to restore the data from my SD card, the process goes through, and after the reset it says Contacts not available, and everzthing is gone: Start menu has only three lines, no programs available, etc.
I still have my contacts on my desktop (which is a Mac...), but lost all my 135 SMS messages, and all the settings for GPRS, MMS, etc.
Probably the German language settings are not compatible with the new English OS...
Anyone had the same? Any workaround?
Anyboby there?
it is very seldom that a restore will work that was made from a different rom. it is best to reinstall all your applications manually. keep in mind that when you do a rom upgrade there can be many changes made to your device such as in the registry that are now quite different, so if you were to apply a restore you would be putting your registry back the way it was.....

Yes mate. Back up your .apks and whatnot, but don't try refreshing a GB backup onto an ICS device. This is the number one cause of compatibility issues and random 'bugs' that users run into.
A fresh wipe will always give you the very best performance, and the very least issues
best of luck with it, check back in if you run into issues.
Hey guys, I have just upgraded my rom and found a couple of downfalls with the new version.
1) the extended rom tools to unhide and unlock no longer work - extended Rom now seems inaccessable
2) the internal memory area called 'Storeage' has disappeared also, leaving me with 16k less memory than I had before the upgrade!!
Any ideas how we can get these back??
I don't think it is to do with the ROM upgrade specifically.
Have you installed any other software?
I had this a couple of times a while back whilst I was experimenting with different ROMs and BT stacks, doing backups and restoring, etc.
Have you tried a hard reset?
Also, look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=10473 where other people had same problem.
Thanks for the info; your'e right:
I checked the other thread you mentioned, and have given it a go...
If you perform a hard reset my device with the new rom has the storeage available and the extended rom unlock tools work again. Restoring a backup and they both disappear.
Looks like I am going to have to rebuild my system :-(
I suspect that restoring an old backup replaces lots of windows related files and registry settings. I tried to install the fonix voicedial from the ext rom post-restoring and it claimed i had the wrong ROM version!
So yes, a rebuild is necessary
Certainly seems that way. Oh well, good luck!
Running new upgrade over unofficial upgrade
Just being lazy here - can you just do a hard reset and run the new 02 update over the 1.72.126 ver. as it says wrong version when you attempt to run it from after a normal reset (incorrect language error)?
Cheers,
Ste G.
As a general rule it is never a good idea restoring a backup over a different ROM version - bit like restoring a W2K backup over an XP install. That said, the latest version of Sprite is supposed to be ROM upgrade safe.
I always use the opportunity to clean out all the crap by doing a full reload - bit like the twice yearly Windows rebuilds on my PC.
i just SCID my phone and installed rom version 1.35.255.2 11/14/06
everything is fine.
Then i use sprite backup and restore my old configuration and programs. Now version shows 1.20.xxx.x.
I am sure i restored the file which holds the version number.
I also understand that cross-rom restores might cause problems. but everything else seems to work fine after the restore.
Can i actually restore my backup without losing the Version information?
You should better not do it because you restore system files from the old rom.
You need to use device upgrade mode, you cannot just restore to a new ROM there is a special proceedure, check the Sprite FAQ for details

Here is the main FAQ page
http://www.spritesoftware.com/faq
If your device is WM2005 PPC, then choose Restore After upgrading WM 2005 for PPC... its pretty self explaintory but alot of ppl go ahead and upgrade their ROM then make posts on forums asking why its not restoring everything, it takes like 1min to read thru the faq...These details are in the user guide too...

Hi everyone. With all of these awesome new ROMs coming out I am constantly tempted(and often pull the trigger) to keep trying them out. I have been using Sprite Backup 6.1 which has a feature that saves device data for doing just this and is supposed to be able to do a device restore even with a new rom. I'm skeptical of this considering that many of these roms are built with OS's that are not yet released. Therefore, how can Sprite test the restore fully? The restore options are rom, device, safe, restore databases etc. Do you experienced rom testers/devs have any advice on the best way to painlessly migrate the Mogul to a new rom without installing all of your programs and doing all registry tweaks again etc? I want to try the new DCD 2.2 but I just spent the last 2 days reinstalling everything from my original gps rom to the 2.1 rom. Thanks again for all the help.
I believe the only way is to re-install everything. I think using Sprite merges all the files leaving more junk in your system. I keep upgrading just like you and manually install every file on every update. Its the cost of having your phone run up to date.
ouch, that is going to give me pause before going to dcd2.2. I guess I will wait a bit to rest up a bit since I stayed up until 3am this morning getting things tweaked with the new rom.

Wow -- really 2 days?
I have mine down to a science now. From the moment I start the upgrade to when I am finished is now 45min or less (my best has been 38).
I have created a doc that list step-by-step what I need to do next; therefore, eliminating the guess work and me trying to remember what's next.
Good Times!!!
I have a bunch of cabs on my storage card that I run. Then I put in my outlook server info and the phone is basically back to normal.
I have heard of the 2577 method on the SD card. I personally have not tried it. Apparrently you create a folder named 2577 on the storage card with the cab files and a autorun.exe file. (EDIT: The AutoRun shoudl be in the Stock ExtRom). This should be in the Stock ExtRom. I have read they use this when doing a lot of PPC for companies.

Every since i updated to the latest rom via the HTC website, i noticed my phone info now says T-Mobile_LEO, what's up with that? NORMAL or what?
Plus SPB Backup also recognises it as not the same device i made a backup on although it is, even if i backup using the same rom it thinks it's different.
Other then this weird thing the entire phone works flawless, was just curious as to whats up.
Thanks for any input.
mine does this too because the energy rom im using based on a rom for the tmous..... must be the same sort of issue.
its nothing to worry about, shouldn't cause you any problems.
I wouldn't advise restoring your backup from an old rom to a new rom anyway in case there are any incompatibility issues....
Just tried to restore my backup from SPB Backup which was made on this phone and when i get to the restore part it states the phone is different from the one which i made the backup ?? Anyone with any ideas what's up here ?
Why does it say it's T-Mobile_Leo in the first place as the rom update was downloaded from HTC's own website.
Anyone else had this same problem ??
I backed up everything and now i can't restore it properly.

First, you should only use SPB Backup to restore to the SAME ROM as was backed up. Otherwise you will have trouble. Not might, will.
You have to select the Force ROM Upgrade mode, and then just before the restore, check the options and select ROM upgrade. Then it should work.
Hi there,
Well, I just got my HD2 back from repairs, where they replaced the mainboard. The ROM seems to be the same, 3.14, but the phone ID is showing as T-Mobile_LEO. When I restored using SPB backup, it said the ROM was different though. What is going on here?
Thanks,
David
I can't figure it out either, exact same thing but my one happened with the rom update.
Weird.
Do some of you guys use Swype?
If yes, the naming of your device is "normal", Swype wouldn´t run with the "normal" naming.
Afaik, the Swype cab installs a certain file into the Windows folder.
If you remove it, the name would be normal, but Swype won´t run correctly.
Ahh. I use swype, I did not know it actually renames the device.
That actually makes sense.
Thanks for this finally cleared up now.
Brilliant.
