Ive always noticed that when I take a pic, and then look at it in gallery, I never get the pic I just took, ie its like a thumbnail of it. I often take a quick snap of writing or lists etc, but this low res version sometimes makes it very hard to see.
I also remember when I was trying to show off the screen, id take a 4mb nat geo pic, try and zoom in, and it looked like ****e really quickly because it was taking a thumbnail.
Do you think its possible with the resources available our phones would smoothly be able to handle the high res [or if not a higher res] version of the gallary?

I think if you wait long enough it renders the higher res thumbnail but it takes awhile. I could be wrong though, haven't really gone into the gallery much.

For the sake of the thread, is there anyway to prioritize this action or make it run in the background so the higher resolution images are preloaded to avoid having to wait?

The new Gallery3D app came with froyo increased the res but it is still not full as the original pic.

Hence my unableness to read text ive taken a picture of, when the actual pic is perfectly fine. I dont might having to toggle super high res mode, or waiting longer etc, I just want to be able to zoom in with original quality.
Not sure if it views it in hi-res but I have noticed that Astro views it a bit better and loads it faster as well. Perhaps give it a try and see if it help at all..
B&B Multi Touch Gallery was working for me to view full resolution, but I feel like it's been abandoned and probably isn't worth buying. Really wish the built in gallery could get it's **** together. Wish they had an options menu with the ability to reduce visual effects to improve picture loading speed and quality.
Just got my N1.
Does it record in 720p or is that a feature only available through root?
I'm on FRF91, thanks!

I think you need to root and load a different ROM. Try CyanogenMod. Search is your friend!
At this second no N1 on Froyo records 720p, theres a bit of trouble porting it. But yes, you would have to root to get it when its release.
I too prefer the default gallery to get its **** together, as its the one which is always there, and the one linked to camera.

First off this is not my app. I went back to the vibrant for a bit and found this. It works perfect on the MT4G so I figured I'd show it to you guys.
It was made by avdaga and his original thread is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918945
Pretty much it's what the 3D gallery should do. Not just sway the pictures when you move the phone but actually scroll through them.
*If you have the aosp 3D gallery installed already you'll need to uninstall it before installing this one.

Hi there,
For a school project I have modified the Gallery3D application to enable scrolling, zooming etc by using the accelerometer.
I have made a short demonstration which can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xYkblRYPcY
The mod is based on CyanogenMod-android_packages_apps_Gallery3D-a63279d.
It would be very cool to use scrolling for the selection of pictures within the album grid, so one could open/close the picture by shaking... However, the sourcecode was not so well documented and we couldn't find some functions that would help us implementing this... I must note, the source contains 50+ classes, we have only looked into a few.
For installation instruction check http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=752007
Current Functionality added
VolDown: en/disable motion (disabled by default)
Gallery:
● Scroll by tilting
● Reset to first by shaking
Image view:
● Next/Prev by tilting L/R
● Zoom in/out by tilting U/D
● Reset zoom by shaking
With some help I hope to add the following in the future:
● In grid mode: Select center image
● In grid mode: Open image by shaking
● In grid mode: Prevent scrolling out of the grid range
● In picture mode: return to album by shaking
● In picture mode: initialize zooming at current tilt angle, and zoom from there by holding an overlay button (next to the zoomin/zoomout overlay buttons)
If anyone could help me a hand with the image selection, e.g. by giving me a direction where to find functions for this, I'd be very greatfull!
I'm wondering what you think about it, your questions/remarks are very welcome

I dont remember ever getting the icons, I was just thinking about that yesterday. Maybe I missed the PM or something. I will have to go back and look. I was just playing with my buddies Vibrant. He just put the Froyo update on and was wondering if the lag fix would work. it is so laggy compared to the Glacier. I couldn't believe it. I didnt think his screen seemed much better than mine (good screen) and his seemed kinda color tinted. I dont watch movies or anything like that, I am sure there is a big difference there. I probably couldnt watch a movie on it anyways, that would require me not messing with it for like 2 hours and that aint happening. lol
Hey I saw you were making a zip for that guy in the other thread with the batt icons...YOU ROCK PACK!!! Thanks for everything!!!

The reason for that is because it is made from the original gallery app. So when you try to install it your device thinks your installing a duplicate application and denies it.

The problem happens when you try to view a part of the page that has not been loaded yet, if you have a fast network connection you will barely notice it !
run www.speedtest.net on your phone
It's not a loading issue, it's a rendering issue.
I agree, it's very annoying -- I presume Samsung have done it so that scrolling is super-smooth and rendering is done on a best-effort basis, but I'd rather it rendered the page as fast as it can and slowed down scrolling if necessary on complex pages.

so it happens even after the page is fully loaded, that stinks. it may have something to do with the browsser being hardware accelerated, while all other android phones have browser rendered entirely by the CPU for al content.
maybe some implementation of the way samsung did this is causing the issue?
so after fully loaded, can you scroll faster than the web page can be rendered, meaning it cant keep up with itself?

Probably not with Samsung's browser. You could try another browser like Opera Mobile though as that doesn't have any checkerboarding.

its obviously that Samsung has modified the browser to make it feel much smoother than other Android device and it looks like they've followed iphone steps in that, by doing the checkers to avoid rendering non-visible parts of the page.
and lastly, the browser is not hardware accelerated as other people think. Hardware acceleration will probably be implemented in Android's next release (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Checkerboarding maintains framerate.. I'm all for it since I cringe every time I see a phone drop to lower double digit frames/second.

Good question,
I'll test for you now. I just thought, why not just use the iPlayer app? Gives you the option to stream at HQ (800KBPS) which on my WIFI, looks great.
Update: Just tested it in the browser, and it's as smooth as the APP. I'd say perfect framerate, apart from the odd jump here or there, but that may be due to connection as my WIFI is only on 1 bar in this room.
So good news

Thanks for the video but the issue isn't what you've addressed. On the SGS which I still own, if you zoom in further after the initial double tap (which reflows) it should reflow again using the text size you zoomed into. To describe in steps
1) Open website in overview like XDA
2) Double tap to zoom in and it reflows - this is as far as you demonstrated
3) Increase zoom by pinching for example to to the maximum zoom level
4) Double tap and it should reflow with the font still at the maximum zoom level.
The SG2 fails to execute the 4th step, instead it reverts back to the initial overview page. A workaround to achieve step 4 is to switch the phone to landscape then back to portrait mode after step 3, but that's not how it's meant to work.
Hope this clarifies what the problem is.

So I have flashed to the latest International version of ICS and of course now have the option of either standard or high resolution. I use Pocket Informant and noticed that in standard resolution it comes up like a phone but in high resolution it comes up like it should for a tablet. When I was running the stock T Mobile build it always came up in tablet mode. Just what are the differences between the two other than the obvious. Also is anybody using Nova launcher? I used it on my phone while playing with ICS with no problems but with the tablet it won't let me place any widgets. It just tells me that their isn't enough room on the screen.
Kirby
Can't say much in the way of "other then the obvious" but yes, I saw that with several apps and launchers. In standard it reacts more like a phone. Some apps I couldn't even install because the resolution wasn't supported. When I switch to high everything worked as expected, as on a tablet. Those apps I couldn't install before then installed just fine.
After switching I noticed a definitely change in speed, but either I've gotten used to it or it corrected itself after a bit.
So I take it that you are runniing in high res mode all of the time?

Yeah. Like it much better. Icons and thinks look a little blurry in standard. I just took two screen shots between the two, same launcher and background setup. Standard indeed just looks like a smaller screen scaled up... and blurred.
I like high but with apps that are not tablet specific you can run into the issue of teeny tiny text being difficult to read.

It was pretty stupid for them to force us to crop our 1600p wallpapers. Seems like we need to wait for a while to get software optimized for nexus 10

Very good point. I used pic speed too, but if its scrollable then there isn't anyway that it's actually leveraging the image's native resolution. If anyone knows a fix please let us know.

Although I don't have a nexus 10, wouldn't this be because of the nav bar at the bottom? That would take up however many pixels leaving the screensaver to be 2560 x 1500 or so?

No, the stock one would let you select only a fraction of the wallpaper if its very big like a 1600p one like how it should on a 4 inch screen. On a 10inch screen it looks magnified and ugly.

You need to make your wallpaper a size that accounts for scrolling. It's 3966x2560 on this device. In landscape mode, only 1456 of the 2560 will be visible.
or use a launcher that you can disable wallpaper scrolling like apex or nova.

Hey folks... I wanted to toss this out there because I've had a number of friends who got S5's recently and after playing with it a bit didn't realize this... the stock camera app is in a sense upgradeable by downloading new filters and shooting modes. Simply open the app, bring up the list of filters or shooting modes and scroll to the end, where you'll find a Download button. It'll bring you to a list of add-ons in the Samsung app store where you can grab what you want (most free, some not).
I think Samsung largely just took out stuff that was in there on the S3/S4 and made them add-ons, but I'm totally cool with that, and there may be a few new and interesting things too.
Anyway, now you know... and knowing's half the battle
Yay more filters, thanks but I'll stick to Vsco Cam, filters are flexible and u can make your own and not lose resolution. ..
Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk
Currently I'm awaiting a camera app duel article that then lists the best app depending on model of phone and other factors.
That said, I really like the Samsung camera application and find that the flexibility to add additional filters without going third-party is a nice feature.
Strange, for whatever reason, I only show 4 additional modes being available when I check for new modes (via the same Download link within the camera app). Any suggestions?

Because that's all there are. In another thread, someone asked about Macro. The auto mode seems to focus pretty darn close. I was maybe three inches away from or less and the focus was right on.

Thanks for confirming my original suspicions. When I had read the OP, it sounded as though additional filters/modes (beyond the current 4) were already available, but that I had somehow blocked them by disabling so many unneeded applications in an attempt to fight bloat.
Yeah, I did notice that the macro capabilities had improved a touch from the S4. This was a pleasant surprise, considering I like to play around with taking neat macro/detail shots of stuff. With the few extra megapixels and the selective focus, it's even better.
