I used to use an app called Rings Extended on my G1 to set my own Notification Ringtone(or incoming text). Doesnt seem to work on the Vibrant. Is there another way?
I use tone picker it's in the market. Works fine on mine.
You can also create custom folders which android will recognize for custom sounds. Create a folder called "Media". In that, create a folder called "Audio". In the Audio folder create folders called "Ringtones", "Notifications", "Alarms". If you put custom sounds in those folders, you will be able to select them in your settings.

You can only set custom ringtones for entries stored on the Phone (not GMail like it should be). Easiest way is to create a 2nd contact with the same exact name and set the ringtone there. The phone will automatically link them together. You just need to enter the name and set the ringtone, don't need to re-enter their phone number, etc.

FYI, Rings Extended works for me. I had it on my G1 also, and I loved it so it was one of the first things I installed on my Vibrant. Is it just force closing on you? Won't finish installing?

Noob question but... where do you create the original "Media" forlder?
I believe you can put it in your sd card folder.

ya but then when you go to text message there are two of the same person with identical numbers...hence my prob that i cant figure out

Hey all..
I have a few media players installed on my hero, but on the preinstalled one is there a way to get it to ignore a folder? I am currently learning spanish and have about 500 mp3's on the phone. It unfortunatly lists them all on the media player. I want to get it to ignore them so when i let it play my entire playlist on random it wont choose any of those.
is there a way? I have MixZing lite which does have an option to look at specific folders, but it wont intergrate with the lock screen (which is really very handy!). I tried adding the .nomedia onto the directory but to no avail....
I had the same problem, so far all I've done is hide the entire folder by stiking a '.' on the front of the folder e.g. hide the folder 'hidestuffinhere' by renaming it '.hidestuffinhere' using Astro or something.
The media player ignores everything under these folders:
\Media\Alarms
\Media\Ringtones
\Media\Notifications
However, if you move your spanish mp3s into these folders, they'll show up in alarms, ringtones or notifications.

Try a reboot,
If it doesn't work, backup your SD to your PC. Then format the SD card through the phone and recopy your data back.

Tried to do the same on my HTC pro but file explorer does not allow me to rename a folder with a name starting with a dot "." ??????

Yeah, I use Astro, and it works fine.
Yep just used Astro to change my download folder (where I download ringtones to on my sd card) anyways in the music player it used to show a load of unknown albums and list the weird ringtones I had downloaded.
Changed the folder through Astro .downloads and now the music player doesn't pick up those unwanted files.
The other alternative is:
Using notepad, create an empty file
save the file as .nomedia (do not save as .txt, but "All files")
add the file .nomedia to the folder you want to avoid showing media from
This works for video, photos and MP3. They can still be accessed using file explorer.

Anyone have issues with custom ringtones after rooting?
I had a custom ringtone in the mpga format that was working fine before I rooted. After rooting my phone, applying the lag fix, applying the gps fix, and installing ADW launcher, I can no longer use it as a ringtone.
I can navigate to the file in Astro, but the option to set it as a ringtone is greyed out. Anyone experience this?
Oh, I also clicked on "Fix Permissions" in Rom Manager and it went through the process (I figured it would have a prompt or something), don't know if this has caused it or not, is there a way to reverse whatever it did?

I have since tried putting the file in a folder named ringtones in my root sdcard directory and have had no luck getting the file recognized.

I make custom .mp3 ringtones on my laptop then transfer them over to the phone thru Windows Explorer.
1. Connect your phone to the PC via USB
2. On your phone, it should show that USB is connected on the drop down menu...click on it and mount
3. Now open My Computer on your PC and double click to open your internal sdcard (phone memory)
4. There should be a folder called "media." Double click to open that folder and then then double click the folder called "audio"
5. Create a new folder called "ringtones" (for custom ringtones) and another new folder called "notifications" (for custom message tones)
6. Now drag your audio files into the corresponding folders and you should be able to choose your custom ringtones/message tones through the phone settings
There are also apps in the market that enable you to create your own ringtones on the phone using the music in your library (Ringdroid)

On my other Android devices I can simply put a . in front of folders that I don't want the gallery to display (such as avatar pics and shortcut icons and what not) and it wouldn't. Then I could use eStrongs file manager or similar to browse to them when I needed them. I popped a 2GB MicroSD card I had laying around that already had some files on it from another Android device and ALL of the folders with images are showing up in the gallery... even those with a . in front of them.
Is there any way on an Archos 101 to set the Gallery to NOT display items inside of a '.' folder? Seems this is default with other Android devices so I'm hoping it's at least an option on these.
Ideas?

Create a 0kb file called .nomedia. Place it in the folder of items you don't want shown. That should work.

Doesn't appear to work. I searched before posting this and found a few things about .nomedia and thought maybe you had to rename the actual folders w/the images within to .nomedia to hide them? Seems like this would be a PITA way to go about it.
Am I doing something wrong? Any other ideas?

It should work just fine. Did you name the file specifically .nomedia? No ext name. Did you reboot to see if that helps? Did you put the file in the folder of the items you don't want showing?
Here is some more specific instructions (I didn't write them):
1. On your computer, open Notepad or any other text editor
2. Save the blank file with the filename “.nomedia”, make sure that the Save as type is set as “All Files” instead of “Text documents”
3. Copy that file to the folder on your SD card containing picture files you don’t want to show up in the gallery. (Example: If you want to block aDyno image files from coming up, place the .nomedia file in the sdcard/aDyno folder)
4. Reboot your phone and hopefully the unwanted files should no longer be viewable.

Alright, w/more information I tried it again. I created a file just using a file browser on the device. This time around I created a file in Notepad on my PC called .nomedia and made sure the filetype was set to 'all files' before saving and that there was no extension (deleted the .txt) and then copied that file to my Archos 101. I first tried in the folder on the SD card that contained all the folders in question. I rebooted and it didn't seem to help. I then copied the file into each folder and rebooted. Still no dice. Whenever I open Gallery all the folders and images are still there. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to clear a cache or something or delete any tumbnails or ?? I'm sure I'm just doing something wrong but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I keep searching and am coming up with nothing. This was SO easier on my other Android devices as I just put a period in front of the name of the folders I didn't want to display and it was done. Simple as that. This is a royal PITA and I feel I'm not making any progress.

Do either of these allow you to simply hide w/o signing in or encryption? I found two other programs & both required this which I don't want to deal with. Just seems odd that others are saying this is working for them & I'm not having any luck. I don't mind installing an app as long as it works but I'm not sure why my Archos 101 would be different than the rest.

This app working rigth for me, only add the .nomedia in the folders. Now the pictures in the folders i marked don't displayed in thr gallery

You need to make a folder naming 'notifications' onto your SD-card and put these files in it, otherwise it is always better to add in System\media

I made the folder directory: sdcard/media/audio/notifications and saved the mp3 there, but it still doesn't show up when selecting a notification tone, like, for example, texts. I tried to move the mp3 into the phone's storage, but it won't let me.. I'm using OI File Manager. Any suggestions?

Are you rooted? Use ES file explorer, don't forget to mount file system in settings.

I'm running stock. I assume that I have to be rooted to save files onto the phone, as the mount setting is only available for rooted phones. Is this the only way I'm gonna be able to accomplish what I want to do?
I know how to associate ringtones with contacts.
I want to rename ringtones with the name of the contact so they are easier to find by file name.after flashing a ROM
The problem is that changing the file name doesn't always change the name of the ringtone. Or editing the title in the text file breaks the ringtone so it won't play.
For example:
"Orion" ring tone file can be renamed "Friend1", and will show up in file managers as Friend1. But under Sound/Select Ringtones, it will still show up as Orion. Opening the file in Text Editor and changing the title will break the ringtone.
Solution?
Are you renaming the file name through the phone or on a pc? Might make a difference. Not sure though.

I probably renamed them on a PC, then transferred the folder to the phone sdcard. My plan is to then replace the systen/media/audio/ringtones folder with one that avoids the ringtones I don't like, and only includes options I like.
That works, but doesn't allow my new names to show up under ringtone selection lists. The old name then appears, twice if I also keep the old file with the original ringtone name.

On a computer in a media player, you should be able to "edit tag info" or something similar. that is where you add in the track name, artist, album info and all of a MP3.
**EDIT**
Easier way, on a Windows machine you can just right click the file and select properties, then the details tab, change it there.
If the files are edited properly, they will work, and show up properly. The "text edit" method just broke the files so they wouldn't play. But an MP3 tag editor which can also handle .ogg files will allow the title to be changed and whatever else is needed in there to make it work.
So the solution for me is:
1. Copy the ringtone you want.
2. Rename the file with a R/W capable root explorer, or do it on a PC.
3. Retag with a tag editor to change the Title in the tag if needed, so it shows up properly in the Ringtone selection screens
4. Place the file in the right place with a root explorer, in the case of a Verizon Note 2, the system place is system/media/audio/ringtones
5. I also rename the original ringtones folder, and replace it with one that has all of the ringtones I want, without the ones I don't.
