froyo is 2.2 yes so i guess that means we will be getting 2.1 in sept "with plans" to upgrade to 2.2 thereafter
At least is progress i guess

not good enough for such a high end device in my eyes. if it is a case that we wont be getting 2.2 in sept then dell should do the moral thing and release 2.2 source for us to mess about with
Dell have been saying that they wll release with 1.6 and update to 2.2.
Yet again, yesterday, they stated the same thing
Click for post --> Like I mentioned in my previous Dell Streak post, the Android 2.2 over the air update (Froyo) will come later this year. We will ship Dell Streak with Android 1.6.

I notice he said "Thankyou for all of your comments...." he cant have been reading the same forums and threads that i was...heh.
Yup - looks good on your screen mate.....what about getting it on to ours....there wasnt really much in that, as there was no timeline - is it really that hard to say 2.2 will be ready......"insert date here" and if you dont make it just let us know, then we a, know that its being worked on and b, know what the actual version to be released will actually be.....sheesh - is it really that hard. Personally if they'd said end of september.....adn then it rolled over and they post and say "taking a bit longer" end of oct - id be happy with that - at least i know....in a world of open and instant communication they havent actually done neither....
Am i being too harsh??

not at all, i don't think its the hardest thing in the world to narrow it down to a date... I've not bought my streak yet as I'm waiting for 2.1/2 before i take the plunge...
As far as reading comments on the web goes... god know where hes been looking, one main issue i has is with the horrific keyboard layout! there should be some option to remove that bloody numpad!
I would have bought one of these for the large screen internet browsing. Though it has been a disaster that its been released with 1.6. By the time this comes out nexus one users will have gingerbread.
There is, I have swype and touchpal working on my device and they are great. Look up the swype apk or download touchpal on the market. They work unbelievably.

Don't be put off that fact the main market screen is all in chinese
Just read engadget this morning......ARE YOU READING THIS SITE MR DELL....Droid x already getting 2.2.....
As of yesterday i took delivery of my Nexus One so, for the moment i have 2 phones....depending on what Dell does will depend on whether i have it over the next 6 weeks or so.
I dare say im not the only one...
I don't think Dell actually realise how much they are damaging their sales by packaging such a high end device with what is essentially year old software with no update time fram... I know they said by the end of the year but that's still anytime over the next 5 months!

I think its more to do with we don't have any bloody source to work with!
the current kernel doesn't want to play with 2.2
And so far I haven't got a cooked kernel to boot, so I may be missing something.
To help efforts maybe we should try an nd all work out what there is propriety in the current roms, and then we can include what we're missing.
I am determined to at least get a vanilla froyo kernel and system working...whether it will be any good is another matter, but I'm on holiday for another week so no linux box to play with...

Do we have any devs over here?
At all?
Its pretty damn quiet?
My guess is that since it's only out in the UK at the moment, development won't really kick off until it gets it's american release.
Although Paul at Modaco has already rooted the phone so maybe there's the odd developer trying to do stuff.
I'm more a tinkerer than a dev, but I'm having a play with quite a lot of stuff.
As this is my first full blown android I'm learning quickly (I do have a lot of experience with linux so it's not that alien).
first up for me is to work out if the wifi chip supports "N" like the n1
tinkerer, dev, whatever ... your more experienced than any of us...
how come you came to the streak
I wonder if it will support 720p video recording like the Incredible?
I love big screen devices... I've always missed my htc advantage.
And frankly this is a geeks ultimate device... So much potential for tweaking and some bugs to fix, how could I resist
Its so far left field that I can't help but see it become a design classic
And it works like a computer! I even love the Dell shell that makes it work like a desktop linux... That's one in the eye for Ms and their moronic new os.
When I get the hang of it at bit more hopefully I can start to push it.. Just starting to work through adb shell..
May extract that latest update to see what's new and what they are doing, still far to much I don't understand. Its quite fun being a noob all over again and doing lots of reading and discovering some great websites.
Maybe we should have a thread of all the various articles/ websites that people find useful relative to the streak and developing for android in relation to it.

Like you I love my large screen devices which is why I went for the HD2. I cook my own roms using the latest sys and software with the amazing tools provided in these forums.
I would never consider myself a pro chef more like I can cook microwave meals hehe. Tools made by bepe and ervius etc do all the hard work for me
I ordered my unlocked dell streak direct from dell UK yesterday with a delivery date of the 13th of July. Its going to feel great getting that 5" screen and I cant wait to begin tinkering. I think the first step will be rooting it, recovery image then having a play about with the modoco kitchen.
Second thing to do will be to get swype installed\cooked in as I CANNOT live without that, I am so used to it. I missed out on the open beta so hopefully cant find the files floating around the web somewhere ;-)
Me too - ive got a hd2 (now for sale if anyone wants it) - my streak will be here tomorrow....i couldnt wait (got an o2 locked one but ive got a rebel sim card on the way as well)- going to florida in 6 weeks time so i may pick up a couple of unlocked ones while im there (i think theyll work out at about 280 quid english money...)
With the HD2 im kinda used to having the latest and greatest software but it looks like we're going to have to wait a little while for a 2.2 version....
Yeah, this part of the forum is a little on the quiet side...but good to see/hear some people are looking into cooking some roms!
At first glance, I wasnt too impressed with it...until I actually used the device...its awesome! This phone + 2.1/2.2 will be unstoppable.
Question for you; Are we waiting on Dell to release the kernel source for 2.1/2.2 so that we can build a custom 2.1/2.2 rom as the kernel for 1.6 wont work with 2.1/2.2? Or am I way off haha!
nope ur spot on we need a kernel for 2.x

will the mini/pro get live wallpaper support or only big brother?
Ahh finally let's bring it on
What will this actually bring that the 1.6 doesn't already? is it going to be something massive or just small updates through-out the software?

Time Out for you my friend!
Why even mention MT when you know it's likely to create a flaming war. I think mods should impose a 3 day ban on anyone using the words "mulit-touch" , "Flash" and "2.1/2.2 update" in an X10 forum.
2.1 update
I think this excitement and anticipation of the 2.1 update is going to followed by an almighty disappointing sinking feeling when we actually get it. Then a huge clamour for the 2.2 update will surely begin. It all really hangs in the balance as to what SE do with this update. If they compensate for 2.2 then users might be happy but I really doubt that 2.1 will suffice for most when all other new phones will spot 2.2(flash support, wifi tethering and all the rest). I think this anticipation has more to do with frustration with having 1.6 rather than optimism for 2.1. We wait to see how events unfold with interest.

Just wrote what I was thinking. I don't think SE will give us anything exceptional in 2.1 and all excitement will dampen and converted to frustration. Anyway, the phone is not bad - doing well with 1.6 - hope it will do better with 2.1.
The problem is with ever increasing mobile models with new features, OS, new hardwares teasing us and making our anticipation high from our existing device. Next we are frustrated when we see all new models with improved specs around us and go and buy another one when the old mobile is still perfect to do another one-two years. What a way to waste money!! In last one & half year I myself have bought three mobiles (total amounting to 65000.00 INR equivalent to 1200-130 USD which is quite high as per Indian standards) including this SE X10 mini and all the mobiles are infact perfectly OK and lying unused.
Don't stress guys. With any luck we'll have cyanogen mod 6 (a custom rom running 2.2) on our handsets shortly. This should negate the need to update the phone, even though most users won't be able to resist the temptation of a new rom running 2.1. Just remember, if you update you destroy the root and essentially ruin any chance of installing custom firmware. Personally I'll abstain from updating until we have a clearer picture of what XDA developers can achieve.

I'm pretty sure that most are just waiting for Dell to do the heavy lifting and put out 2.2 and then the kitchens will be pumping with custom ROMs.
Of course, this is also a fairly new device with a lot less exposure as well. Most of the local devs are fairly well versed with winmo, but android is a whole new ballgame

I think you'll be waiting a long time for Dell to do that "heavy lifting."
I'm still routing for Stephen to get vanilla froyo going.
TBH, I think Dell already have a Froyo build floating around with the Streak. The delay is that they want to plaster it with their UX cr*p before release.
I'd agree that dell are hanging off to secure some more third party deals such as touchdown.
Daft thing is they could secure more cash if more folk purchased. Quick way to get more punters? Get a device that has a 5 inch screen and is flash capable!
We do not need 2 threads open on the same subject so i will close this one !!
Guys, did anyone noticed that a new kernel 4.05 had been released on Dell's website?
http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/4.05/
Checkout the HOW-TOs, looks like it's meant for building stock 2.3.5R1 !!!
There's a hint to modify msm8660 board to run it on Streak as well !!!
That's good news.
Hope we can upgrade to official 2.3.x soon!
Thisnis excellent news... makes me feel better that dell hasn't completely abandoned us

Umm, well, as I believe we will get an official 2.3.5_r1 from Dell, I think it would be boring to build an AOSP 2.3.5_r1 release. So I've been pulling CyanogenMod 7.1.0 instead, which will seem to be more challenging
Guys, but be aware that I'm not promising anything
But the word is already out We'll be almost patienly waiting.

WOw , i hope Something Good Comes Out , a Stable gingerbread atleast
I would estimate that this kernel for Dell Streak Pro.
Dell Streak Pro has adopted Android 2.3, the server also does not have a directory for the Dell Streak Pro.
Dell Streak Pro (101DL) are expected to be released by Softbank.
That is clearly for the s5, it's clearly in the s5's folder.
The SPro doesnt have a dir yet since it's still months away from release, they have absolutely no reason to release anything until it's out.
If the kernel for Streak5, I am pleased.
However, can not believe the update is done by DELL.
Hmmm since Dell have put the kernel to the public, does that mean a release is now imminent? Before December? November?......arghh!! Really can't wait to get a stable GB rom!
Now we only need to search for a Chinese Dell Streak5 dedicated forum to watch for a potential release!
wish I knew how to do this. I'd give it a go, but unfortunately I'm stupid when it comes to this kind of stuff.
according to modaco dj steve and fards might already be working on it.
DJ_Steve and fards have had access to it/been playing with it for approx 2 weeks, I had reported it to them 2 or so days after it had appeared on the dell servers.
Whatever happens you'll have to wait patiently, I can say they're working on it, but I cant say when something will appear. It takes time to test and debug
I wish Dell would release one. I need a rock stable OS...it's my business device.
I'm still at 2.2.2, but have had zero issues, once I got rid of a flaky app that was freaking out the device. I've looked at the threads of the various roms and all seem to have one bug here or another bug there. Keep at it though! It's the only way anything past 2.x will come to the streak.
Yes title says everything
Can we have ics or honeycomb
Why dell is not opensourcing the streak 5 drivers
just wait. since dj steve is back there is a small chance...
Yes possibly, ICS is a possibility, forget about honeycomb though.
I dunno, I think dj steve had honeycomb booting on the streak 5. He may do it for the laugh ;-)
Afaik though, honeycomb doesn't have phone capabilities anyhow.

He's been able to boot HC for nearly a year now, but it's never been very useful since many thing didnt work.
Now that ICS is out there's no real reason to attempt to work on HC at all
ICS source code is going to be released soon.
http://www.itworld.com/mobile-wireless/224209/google-serves-android-40-source-code
Once it's released, I"m sure our dominant programmers will be all over it, trying to get ICS for the streak!
if you really want to help the initiative, donate to DJ_Steve's paypal account. He's trying to raise money to upgrade his servers so they can handle the ICS compiling. That would be the biggest help to getting ICS available on the Streak 5.
You can find his donation link here:
