Set CPU for some reason is no longer working for me. My settings wont stay set on boot. I'm looking for another overclock option, I'd like to also have profile management for off screen and temp, etc... thanks
If you want profiles, I know of no other voltage programs for the Galaxy S that have them besides SetCPU. For voltage control, we have Pimp My CPU and Voltage Control apps. Both were built with the Galaxy S series in mind.
You may want to simply uninstall/reinstall SetCPU first to see if that fixes your problem. Also, what ROM are you on? If memory serves, I had a similar issue back when I used Project V.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. Reflashing the kernel wiping data, cache etc.. I'm on bi winning v3. The problem started when i tried tegrak overclock. Just wanted to give it a whirl, didn't like it and when i put set CPU back on the settings wouldn't stick.
maybe try romtoolbox. it allows you to designate max and min clock speeds as well as the governor. unfortunately no profiles are supported but the app is in the market and has a lot of helpful features with anyone with root access that is on a custom ROM.
The one thing i'm most after is saving my battery
so i gathered up a few tricks which you can use without using your phone like a Nokia 1100..
You might have read many from the below, but some might be new to you..
1) Brightness.. Keep it 0% indoors, 50-(as much required)% outdoors.
You should keep the brightness minimum but dont push your eyes for battery saving purposes..
Use as much brightness as u would need to view stuff outdoors..
EYES>>BATTERY
2) The lesser the eye candy, the more battery life you get.
Ok, you got an android, you want to show off with fancy stuff..
but the more the widgets/apps you use to beautify, the more they consume your battery.
so use minimal widgets (none if possible)..
& DONT USE LIVE WALLPAPERS..!!
they look awesome no doubt but suck up the juice faster than i'd empty a coca-cola..
3)Overclocking..!!
Now different users have different experiences but i guess almost all would agree with the guy who made the kernels..
as fserve says and as i have experienced myself
use
Smartass - for best performance : battery saving ratio.
Conservative - for best battery backup with normal performance.. (multitasking might be slow [have experienced only with Opera Mini], rest all apps multitask with no lag)
Keep minimum frequency at 480Mhz (BEST VALUE)
If you want little more battery keep it at 122Mhz (if you dont mind the occasional blackscreen bug or a freezes/hangs that it might cause )
&
Keep the max at 652-768 as you wish..
Just mind that battery life will depend on the amount you choose..
So if you are a gamer choose high (as for you performance > battery)
all others can go for 652-729 as u prefer..
4) ROM
Now your ROM also determines your battery very significantly..
Every ROM has different apps it runs int he background.
Now i cant comment as to which is bad or which is good, coz every developer has done a great job with their ROM.
But as a general observation i can say, by far
OXYGEN v1.1 (.32 kernel) has given me the max battery backup (even though it doesnt lack on performance a bit)
Rest you should try out yourself for the best one that suits you
JUST DONT STICK TO LG OFFICIAL GINGERBREAD.. NOT A SINGLE PERSON IS HAPPY WITH IT!!
5)No Battery saver/Task Killer/Memory optimizer bullcrap..!!
Its as simple as that, as much you think they save your battery, they definitely consume some to run themselves..
So its best to do stuff manually than install all this..
PS: If you are too lazy you can stick to them..
6) TTS Trick
You must have the voice input output setting in settings.
And you must have the Pico TTS installed in it..
Just tick always use my settings in there..
It reduces your CPU consumption as the phone doesnt check everytime for settings and uses the default ones..
Cant say if this has increased my backup marginally, but meh, doesnt hurt..
7) Games means less backup..
You are on a 10k 1500mAh phone.
So dont expect full day backups if you are an avid gamer..
with heavy usage if you are getting 10-12 hrs backup, you are lucky..
people with 1-2 days backup use phone as a smartphone not a PSP..
and people with more than that backup (3-7 or 11 days), use phone as a nokia phone not a smartphone..
8) Location
If you want to use weather widgets etc. skip this step
For all others, in settings > location & security untick both wireless & GPS options.
You can tick them whenever you need, like to check-in..
Just turn them on and after you are done, turn them off..
9) 3G
I think everyone knows 3G is a major battery hogger..
For calls etc use 2G
as for internet usage
Wifi > 2G > 3G
Though mind that even 2G uses quite some battery as your network keeps searching for better signals..
So wifi is the best option..
10) Auto Sync
I personally dont use this option, coz as i said earlier, i own a smartphone..
anyhow disable background sync option in settings > accounts & sync for more backup..
11) Battery Hoggers
I personally only have noticed Facebook as one of the worst battery hogger (mark suckerberg)
but
sweetnsour has pointed out certain more apps that consume considerable amount of battery. so avoid them..
Google Maps
Task killers
GetJar
XDA
12) TITANIUM BACKUP
I cant imagine my life without it..
Its a MUST HAVE app..!!
you can freeze battery hoggers with it, if you dont want to remove them.
Just defrost later to use them..
You can even remove system apps which might be unnecessary (like car home, gtalk, or others as per your usage and requirements)

Only Titanium Backup Pro has that function. If you don't want to pay (or pirate), there is a free alternative of Link2SD's freeze function, if you're already using Link2SD as your app-to-sd script. It can also unfreeze apps frozen by Titanium and vice versa.

13) AIRPLANE!
Unless you are some hot-shot businessman u should keep ur cell at airplane mode at night.
Not only will it save LOTS of battery on standby, but will save you from the radiation as well if u keep ur phone near ur head..
14) BATTERY CALIBRATION
If for some reason, you are having unreasonable drains and you cant figure out what the problem is, Calibrate your battery.
I recently faced this problem and now its back to normal..
Its free & easy, just follow the steps d developer has mentioned.

How about auto run manager? To prevent @pps from starting up on their own and hog battery? (I use Gemini app manager)

Nice tips but min. Frequency that low... I heard 480 was the ideal.

added the Link2SD tip..
and as to the autostart up manager, as like #5 says, it might close apps at startup but it surely will consume some of its own, so better go the manual way

yep 480 is the best..
122 though saves more battery, as i have written it causes blackscreen bugs and sometimes freezes the phone (coz the cpu kinda goes into sleep mode)..
Just saw this guide and i must say its pretty well done !
Could you add more info on minfree values and adjusting them, because as far as i remember they increase battery life alongside a performance boost.

i dont have enough knowledge over that topic, so i'd rather not direct someone in d wrong direction..
but i know for sure, to set Minefree values right V6 Supercharger is the best way..
very useful for me
some corrections i guess...

The strategy which I follow to get some more juice out of my battery is to take backup of all my APKs in SD. Check which applications tend to run in background, uninstall those which are needed only on and off. Reinstall and use when required.

thats hectic.
why not just freeze/unfreeze them. that totally disables them as well

I had problems with freezing some apps like 'quiet sleep', resulting in FC of Titanium Backup itself
Something that won't make my phone lag, but will still save battery? I'd also like to know some good advanced settings. Also, other ways to save battery would be appreciated. Aside from obvious (Turn off wifi when you're not using it, turn off 3g when you're not using it, etc)
I could say that the latest DSC 0.72 did a great job with the conservative mode, almost no lag, and you will surely get a better battery life than with ondemand mode.
Before this update, i used my phone with DSC with ondemand mode and my phone had a battery life of around 24 hours (depending on the amount of time spent on gaming).
Also you should Freeze Google Maps if you are not using it. You can easily do that using Titanium Backup Pro (paid version) or Gemini App Manager (free).
Also, if you are looking for a good software for setcpu, you could easily try AnTuTu CPU Master Free.
Hope this helps...
Everyone says to freeze google maps, but I don't have a problem with that... Mine's not constantly running, according to Battery Dr's task killer. As for Antutu, I don't understand why you brought it up, and I do not like Antutu. When I used it, when I had Streakdroid 1.9, it constantly changed values. And the free version (haven't tried paid) doesn't have profiles, like Setcpu.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Well, i don't use any task killer, so i chose to freeze Maps until i really need them, as on my device, they were always running.
As for Antutu, i like the interface, i don't use any profiles (if we exclude the profiles like ondemand, conservative, performance etc.), so i could say it's just a matter of taste. Use what you like and what you want, i just made a recommandation... As for the changing values, maybe you talk about the processor speed that constantly changes because of the profile (ex. conservative mode).
Didn't mean to offend anyone, i just wanted to help... hope this helps.
Actually what I meant was... When I'd set the max to 384, it would reset them 5 minutes later, to 768, or something else. It wouldn't stay at the value I set it at. And no offense taken.

the newest version of google map 6.0.3 doesn't seem to affect battery life (as long as you didn't turn on latitude for it)

Well, I have noticed that google maps 'runs' even if you don't have it open... In my opinion (with my use) it isn't enough to horribly drain the battery. My stock battery still lasts me all day. But yeah. Also, if anyone's using Alarmdroid, that drains the battery almost as much as wifi does.
Hello everyone,
I have HTC Sensation (normal) 4 months old and I have a problem with cpu temperature. I am trying to play any game or use an app or browse the web but in about 10-15 minutes CPU temperature goes over 50 oC and it restarts the phone.
Can anyone suggest me some solution?
I tried to change roms, change kernels, stock rom etc but nothing work.
Is there a way to check if the fan that phone has is working? Can I replace that fan?
Is there a cooler for android phones?
Please someon help me
Thanks in advance
sorry for my english
HTCs are known for this. Make sure that when you play the game, other apps are closed.
If this doesn't work, go back to your stock kernel and under clock it I.e use an app like setcpu to put its maximum CPU hz down. This should disallow the phone to work continually at its highest performance, thus cooling it down.
And no. Android phones don't have fans
Hello for all! :good:
Sorry my english...:cyclops:
Well, i have a low cost tablet, less of 100 bucks, AOC MID 7y2241. It have Amlogic (mason 6) Dual Processor set in 1.2Ghz and 1 GB RAM, GPU Dual Mali 400, running Jelly Bean 4.1.1 :highfive:
It can run all games in excellet performance if... dont sleep. Take easy, i can explain:
Yeah, i dont know why, but, when tablet turns on, he play everything very well. But, if the screen lock and sleep for 5 min or more, the tablet shows me so much lag and low performance after wake up. Just way to back to good playing is restarting device.
I think the problem is the power saving or a seriuos bug, but i not sure. This tablet is set up in conservative mode, and i cant change it. Really, i cant change nothing relative of CPU. I already rooted device with kongo, it works really good! But any apps of overclock dont works in this device. Give root permission, you set, but nothing happen.
I try change manually sys directory (cpufreq), with adb shell, but is same. I give permissions to rw, but the device return me ALWAYS operation denied.
Well, i like to know if is possible write in sys directory. I try for adb and rooted file explorer, but always is operation failled or denied. If this low performance after sleep is a bug, how to fix or if change the governor can help me in this case?
I cant wait for updates... maybe this tablet never see other android version. I cant change image files and rom, cause i cant do backup in this device. Need a solution for compiled kernel.
Seens it is not a particularity of my device. All AOC MID 7y2241 shows this same problem (but only me realized.). Everyone thinks this tablet is slow, but it can run heavy apps and games easily (before first sleep).
Pls, a really need some help (more than 5 days searching and nothing...)

News: When device restart, 2 cores are working. After 5 min sleeping (lock screen), just one core work. Nothing do the second core wake up. Just shows stopped in CPU-Z. I think this is the problem. How i can fix?
For god, nobody????
Cmon guys, just 5 min of a genius can libert me of my insanity!!!

Man, i really really apreciatte your iniciative. Thank you so much! I dont give up yet...
I already do a factory reset, cleanning cache, using Power + Up Button. And not work... Maybe you want said other thing, maybe?
I pass last days broken head in this S.O, and seens a bugged kernel. The tablet boot, and 2 cores working. When 5 min pass by (standby), the cpu 1 is setted off line, and dont wake up again until restart. In I9100, the core wake up frequently, according to demand. But in this case, it dont wake anymore...
When the tablet boot, In "cpu1" folder (in sys/devices/system/cpu/), there is a shortcut of folder "cpufreq" contained in "cpu0" folder. When pass 5 min in standby, the cpu1 is setted like offline, and this shortcut (cpufreq folder in cpu0) is deleted, together with folder "topology". When force wakeup cpu1, just folder "topology" backs. In short, the shortcut of "cpufreq" folder in "cpu1" folder no back anymore.
I think that cpu1 stays without freq control, cause system tuner apps shows the cpu1 like online (just when force wake up), but without freq, just shows n/a.
I really really apreciate a solution for this problem. No one apps can do anything usefull.
For hour, this table have a 4000mah battery, so, i dont matter if i can disable hotplug cpu function. I prefer let 2 cores working that let it cpu1 in offline.
All apps that give tweak "all core enable" in boot dont work (rooted). I need a way that prevent the cpu1 to be setted offline permanently when in standby (lock screen), to avoid first offline set in cpu1.
Something to do with your cpu governor not scaling properly on wake up. Download No-frills CPU Control from playstore. You can read about this app in here.
Try setting the cpu governor to interactive (if none, ondemand) and i/o scheduler to sio (if none, noop or deadline). You can also adjust the min/max frequencies of the stock values.
Yet trying!
Hello!!!
Thanks god, somebody reply me! :victory:
So, how i said, noone apps in google play works (rooted) in this tablet. The No Frills was the first that i try. I click apply, but the config dont change (rooted!).
Is a total root. No this problem. I think that cpu Amlogic have some limitations. Maybe the energy controller is very limited, cause i cant change freqs, governors and I/O (any apps). Just have "conservative" (default, i cant change) and "performance2" (i cant set) governors. Exists "performance", but not have config options (is like no exists).
Or, maybe, the kernel of this android version no able this changes (in this case, i have hope).
I think I/O dont go work here (disk scheduler). What i want is prevent cpu1 set offline, maybe disabling hotplug control?
I discover that this cpu set auto offline cpu1 after 40 ~ 50 min playing heavy games (for sure, high temps...). Certainly, the power manager of cpu Amlogic meson6 is very useless.
If somebody know how disable it in kernel options (maybe uninstalling drivers?), it would be amazing :highfive:

It is s SW Problem ... Iam developing a custom kernel for a Ventos 7 HD ( has the same CPU) it has the the same problems. I fixed it by comparing many meson6 kernel sources. You will need a custom kernel. The Original Amlogic Kernel is very buggy .The CPU can reach 1.5ghz without problems but it is not active in most kernels for Amlogic. Also the CPU1 down is a known Problem , this happens often after a suspend.
Try to find the kernelsource for the device.Maybe i can help you then.
