I have an eris, and I want to use it as a simple wifi browser. I ended my contract with verizon yesterday. Is there a way I can completely disable it from using verizon's network altogether so I can use it as a wifi browser? Is it really as simple as disabling the mobile network, or will that not completely disable it? Thanks
If the phone isn't still active in vzw system then you can't use it on that system for anything but 911 calls anyway. So yeah turn off 3g turn on airplane mode and use wifi only.

I want to use tethering on my carrier in Venezuela, but when i try to enable hotspot it says i'm now allowed should call at&t and such... I know tethering and hotspot isn't the same, but i want to do the following:
-Enable personal hotspot on the phone to allow my laptop to connect to it and get connection (if somehow my home adsl connection drops and my phone is ok)
-Enable tethering over usb, so the battery doesn't suffer while being connected
I had to add my APN manually, a friend with the motorola milestone told me the apn name and settings and apn type is set on: default, dun
What are the possible values for this setting? I know from the tethering mod that it could be: default, agps, fota, supl, fota, tether. By the way we don't have tethering plans down here, do i still need this tethering mod? Because i haven't installed it.
would appreciate any input from you guys. I have searched google and there doesn't seem to be much info about apn types

For WIFI tethering, have your phone rooted and to where you can side load, and try this: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
or this http://www.mediafire.com/?yzerk3nglqof1kk
(Not sure if the'll work because they didn't for me, but they did for other Atrix users)
And for USB tethering, thats easy, and for sure works. Try either Easy Tether (my favorite) : http://www.mobile-stream.com/easytether/android.html
Or PdaNet: http://www.junefabrics.com/android/
I managed to get this to work. I basically turned on hot spot then it loads up ands says connecting or something similar. Now put phone in flight mode. Then take out of flight mode. It should now connect. Worked for me. Im in the uk on hutchinson3.

You don't get the message stating that you need to call at&t for the tethering plan?

Edit: found data switch
Settings > Battery & Data Manager > Data Delivery > Uncheck "Data Enabled"
On rocko 3.0 locked for sprint mopho.
I get force close in wifi settings when scanning wifi networks at school which has wpa enterprise
But I was able to use an external wifi settings app to obtain access to the guest network of the school but can't use it to access the enterprise network due to incompatibility
If you need more info let me know, for now I stick with 3g and 4g
And is there a way to turn off 3G to save battery on this rom? I looked in settings and tried using external app (GoSwitch), to no avail.
Thanks in advance guys
You should be able to disable 3g(data) its called mobile data in most ROMs, never used a locked ROM but its there in stock ROM so it should be somewhere under network settings.
Oh yeah, I know its called mobile data. I believe this specific ROM doesn't have a way to turn it off I think.
Thanks for the input though, anyone else have any ideas?

Hello,
I'm about to be an owner of one of these units, however I do not plan on signing up for tmobile service.
I had an HTC EVO View 4G and there were quite a few roms out there that disabled the sprint activation on boot and a script that disabled the radio. I think that script might still work, however does anyone here make any custom roms that automatically disables it?
I haven't really heard much talk about just using WiFi, who here just uses Wifi? How does it work and perform?
I use WiFi almost always when at home. No problems whatsoever.

Do you have a tmobile subscripttion on it as well though?
I don't want to use a subscription, just don't want my battery to die by having it connect to 3G or searching for it.

No I had unlocked it. I use airtel/aircel in India. It should work just the same I think. I keep it on airplane mode always. When I need net, I use WiFi or I get off the airplane mode and enable the mobile data to access internet. Simple as that. There is a setting in the buld.prop as well which allows me to restrict the mobile connection to 2g only thereby enabling me to receive messages if I want to. It saves the battery needed for scanning for 3g or lte network. So I guess shouldn't be a problem irrespective which network you are on.

Ok, I found this and I tried it.
You can 1st enable phone by editing the build.prop settings (need to be rooted for that).
Once that is done, you need to type in *#*#4636#*#*
It automatically opens a Testing Menu of Settings. This gives useful information including battery etc.
Under the Tablet menu, there is an option to disable the radio all-together. I haven't tried this , but I did try changing the network mode from 2g-3g-4g and it worked for that. I would still suggest you use the airplane mode and put on/off wifi as and when needed. I didn't try this because saw some people complaining that after disabling it, they were not able to re-enable the radio. So be-warned about this.
Hi everyone. I just got a Milestone 3 (Droid 3) from Alltel (the Alltel that was divested from the Verizon buyout), who is actually Atlantic Telecom Network. They are a great local carrier who has the best coverage in my area.
I rooted the phone, installed various wireless tether apps but whenever I use any of them, I instantly lose my 3G data connection along with a message that says "3G data link lost". Sometimes is comes back right after turning the hotspot off and other times I have to reboot. I am sure this is caused by a carrier setting because they want you to pay $20 more/month to enable tethering. Does anyone know anyway around this issue? It never happened with Verizon.
Thanks!
There is an app that avoid's detected called ClockworkMod Tether, it's worth a try.
It doesn't require root either if security is a concern

Thanks but....
I appreciate the help but ClockworkMod Tether is a USB tether solution, not a wireless hotspot. I have never had this happen before on other carriers.

Why does the 4G stay on when connected to WiFi, it does not seem to be using any data but wouldn't it save battery if it turned the 4G off when not in use? I used to have sprint and mobile data always automatically turned off when on WiFi, this is my first verizon phone, is this normal on all verizon devices?

As long as the 4G icon is greyed out it's disconnected. It's just in a ready state in case of sending or receiving mms when it will turn white with activity arrows
Hello, This is a problem on many devices. The best way to fix it is too go to Settings, Wireless Settings, Mobile Settings and then turn off your data.

yes, I realize I can do that im not gonna worry about turning it on and off every time, it dont seem to be using any mobile data but I was looking at it as a battery drain...same reason I dont keep bluetooth on when not in use

If you turn data off you will not be able to receive or send mms. Best to leave it alone. I use g3 teeakbox to hide it when on Wi-Fi
For phone calls and text messages. Data will go through wifi.

I hear you - if the 4g radio is on it is theoretically eating your battery; although it may be negligible with the power saving built into the phone. If you want 4g/data completely off while on WiFi you can download a tasker app from the play store and set it up to automatically switch off data when WiFi is connected & vice versa; it's been working well for me. You'll lose stock MMS if data is turned off though, so consider that before you use a tasker. You can always grab a 3rd party messaging app for MMS if you need it, and they will work because they are only over WiFi.
But if it is just an aesthetic thing, as mentioned in a post above, you can hide the icon using g3 tweaks.
The only difference is that these phones show you what mobile data connection you have. On T-Mobile, you may have a phone that only shows the bars when on WiFi, but it's still connected, just look at an app like Signal Check Pro.
This is not eating your battery, it's not being used, it simply tells you what connection is idle for when you are no longer using WiFi.
