Hopefully we can have some devs look at this and maybe we can come up with a new root method around the new ota update and possible opening up the slide for more modding in the future with more exploits.

By the way, the current root method is EASY. If it is too difficult you shouldn't be doing it at all.

If you knew what you were talking about you know that the ota update patches the old root method and for those users that are just now rooting their phones after the update won't be able too via the old method.
And in no way have I stated that the old method was hard. I've rooted my phone already and have loading custom rom and everything.
If you don't have anything constructive to say shut the eff up.

The guys voice in the video makes me want to shoot myself. I highly doubt this method would work for the Slide -- YMMV.
haha owned
The key to the current root method is the SDCARD. Thats it. I tried 3 different SD cards (G1, MT3GSlide, and Transcend 8gb Class 6) and no luck. Popped in my GF's old blackberry curve sdcard, and was rooted in less than 5 mins. Hell I didn't even have to be all precise in the root process, rebooted to recovery, plugged in the cable and adb showed recovery 100% of the time.

No, it isn't. Stop spreading this nonsense.
I've rooted *my* Slide on three separate occasions -- once with a class 10 16 GB card, once with a class 6 16 GB card and once with the card that shipped with my Slide -- and rooted a coworkers Slide (with the stock sdcard) as well. The sdcard doesn't matter. The root method for the Slide exploits a race condition, one that requires great luck and good timing.
Your sdcard truly does not matter. I cannot believe this silliness is still being perpetuated...
I believe - as a dev, not as a clueless user - that the SD card can in fact matter in this process. As you said our current method exploits a race condition in ADB. It makes perfect sense that in order to increase the time that the race condition is active for you can use an SD card that is slower (and thus keeps ADB stuck in the race for a moment longer).
Personally I can NEVER get the race condition with adb shell with my Transcend 8gb Class 6 card. If I pop in an unrated SD card I can get it in a few tries.
It's possible that it's all speculation, but until we have the source code for the bootloader I don't think we should disprove this theory.
Yeah I think a slower, lower-class SDcard might play a part in getting the timing down right. I have done it on a class 6 already without issues though.

Thanks Army. I'll take a look at this on Friday and see if I can port this to Slide.
It will not help us open up the Slide more, however, since the NAND (flash memory) in our device is security locked. There is only one way to unlock it and we do not have access to that. I am, however, going to look into constructing a USB console cable for the Slide and seeing if I can manipulate things from that port.
And I must apologize to the OP. I have to learn not to go on forums right after waking up. Not only was I a **** but I didn't make any damn sense.

Sorry nb, but I have not seen any evidence to suggest that faster SDcards do not work for rooting (other than a few people with low post counts saying so). When I rooted my Slide with a stock class 2 it took at least 100 tries to get the race condition.
Meh.

I honestly do not believe it's the sdcard either. I read about the sdcard part while I was trying to root my Slide and I tried a few different ones each time it would not work. When I finally did root my Slide it was with the stock sdcard some people just got really lucky with how adb was caught others did not it took me well over 2 days to get things to work right. But honestly it was worth it but I swear I'm not doing it again untill we actually have a spl we can get the security turned off on and hopefully that fixes alot of the root problems.
I tried it like 100 times before I realized that the OTA update broke it, LOL. Not proud of that.
Here my thoughts on what you guys are saying:
-I tried 3 cards of various classes and brands, offline doesnt show on all of the cards
-the usb cord might play a role too, with another rooted phone i attempted to try adb shell with 2 different usb crds(one from charger piece, other from ps3 controller)anyway the one for the ps3 cont actually worked and the other didnt even register in adb
Some of you might say this is BS...but that's up to you to choose not me
OK HI!! i was the one that brought this attention, as this method was used to root the n1, and another forum it was used to root the g1/mytouch.. and this same forum even said it could possibly work on most android devices.. as you have to think this was for the droid X with fully lock bootloader any tampering would send in recovery loop unless you had an offiicial OTA to reflash factory rom.. This is indeed something to look into as these steps are simple adb push and a exploit in wifi... no one sayin that it can work or will work! but cause of this i am in root with latest android OS FRF91, so to think bout it if this expoit existed in current OTA ROM, im pretty sure it still there in previous ones as well...
I was hoping this method was for the MTS as its the ez root ever.. other method is ez too my wife slide is rooted, but as i read the OTA breaks the Root.. so try to help where i can..buy giving suggestions that could possible work
Look at me !(iono something to say)
But here is the link that same method worked on several other android phones
http://c-skills.blogspot.com/2010/07/android-trickery.html
read comments
and here is the original post on where they used it to root the Droid X
http://alldroid.org/default.aspx?g=posts&t=493
why i post this jus to give further proof that this can possibly work jus Need devs into looking on how to make it work
I honestly never thought there was a timing problem. I rooted on my first try. Didn't know it could take forever until my brother told me it took him 3 hours to root his lol.
I noticed I always get better luck if I start back at pushing the ota.zip instead of repeating pushing the update.zip and usually get it.

I saw somewhere that perm root has been achieved, but it is not being released because it could be hard to fix if you screw up the system partition.
Heres the thing though...
Don't we have the recovery files that can reflash the shipping OS version?
Also seeing as how we do not have S=Off that means we can't screw up the hboot or really flash anything that is "unautorized".
That means we could fix any issues by reflashing the stock software right?
Or is the perm root not being released because the method is too difficult.
If that is the case, I understand not wanting a bunch of casual flashers/rooters attempting this, but there are those of us that can actually follow instructions well. Heck I even rooted my old Nexus One without using the official unlock command. It involved switching SD cards at just the right moment while running special scripts for ADB and other craziness.

I think the other part of this issue is that he (Evil DevNull -- oops I said a bad word around here) is using an exploit in the sim card system. He said he burned up two cards doing this. Probably not a very safe method at this point along with the other potential problems.

It is assumed he has a Factory rooted device, or possibly that a glitch in the "Root Checker" program still shows it was rooted after a reboot when it really wasn't. Also, it seems rather shady that he's already asking for money:
Would it be greedy of me to ask for a $5 donation from 500 people?

He started a new thread on the other Dev forums (the 1st one was locked) and we've asked him to Open Titanium before and after the reboot, as well as show us the Bootloader screen to see if it's a factory S-Off/Rooted phone or not. Also, we've asked him for his method. Just seems very shady to me.
Speaking of money...anyone willing to organize and spearhead donations to the developer or group that achieves s-off?
I know this was done on other phones where people pledged $x amount of money.

Pretty much. I wouldn't be asking anyone for a dime period let alone prior to providing a full disclosure of the methods used to obtain root status.
Just like everyone else....I'll believe it when I see it.
Blah... perm root S=On is good enough for me right now if it can happen.
I'll pitch in a few bucks for that... I'll throw a few more for S=Off.
First time since the G1 that I had a device before root was achieved. I wanted to take advantage of the penny sale at Verizon is why I picked it up now. I would have gotten a galaxy s 2 had Verizon offered one. Oh well, every HTC so far has been broken eventually. I hope we don't have to wait too long though.
There was already a donation thread started somewhere I believe. But Evil was the only verbal dev working on root/s-off and said he didn't want money.

This is dangerous. If something happens to /system you're screwed because without recovery it can't be..... well recovered.
There is already a temp root method that you can use to kill the bloat. Outside of that root doesn't really provide you with any other abilities except maybe to steal wifi tethering without subscribing.
Without s off you wont be able to overclock, flash custom Roms or alternate radios....so why do people think they need to have perm root without s-off?
There are plenty other things you can do with Root without S-Off.
THe EVO 3D with hboot 1.50 had the HTC Methosd which left u with an unlocked bootloader and S-On and Flashing kernels and such had to be done thru Fastboot Commands, Which was if the ROM had a Custom Kernel as a Default. I figure if I use a new SD card in the new phone and follow all of Nil's Business Sense instructions that should work. Then if I put in the old SD card I would have all of my settings and apps restored. I'm not sure if that really would work, that's why I am asking you guys & gals. I didn't have the guts to root the original phone, but now I am ready. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You call that easy? you must be a M.I.T. graduate. I graduated from Nova South Eastern University, and let me tell you, It makes no sense to me. That's why I am asking for help!
Pro tip: If you don't S-OFF, you can't brick this phone. It's actually pretty much impossible to brick unless you S-OFF. You can "soft brick" it, but you can recover. Until you S-OFF, you don't have enough access to the important stuff to actually brick, and you can do everything even when you're S-ON...some of it takes a little more work, but if you're worried about bricking, it's safer to stay S-ON.
So, I recommend staying S-ON when you're starting out. It's a big time safety net.

I've helped a ton of people unlock and root their phones via teamviewer. I'm guessing that you're installing a new RUU to get the latest firmware. Or trying to s off because of the sdcard comment.
If you're having problems the sdcard that you normally use could just be copied to a folder on your computer and then use it like normal, for a regular root and unlock it shouldn't wipe your sdcard.

I read a lot about the wire trick. Some people swear by it, others say it's a sure way to short out your phone. I've seen videos on You tube and the procedure looks pretty simple. I was nervous about voiding my warranty, but after just receiving my replacement (certified like new) Rezound, I think they just use the returned phone for parts for the next replacement, So wish me luck as I do the paper clip trick
One question... will my paid for apps live through the back-up to my sd card and back to the phone again

If you bought them from Google play or have the apk then yeaa. Just back them up to your PC if you have the apk. And I really recommend you don't s-off.... Unless you know what you're doing. One wrong move after you s-off and you have a paper weight and not a phone any more.

I concur. And I'm glad you said that cslingerland. I've read so many posts from people saying "just s-off" to people who clearly aren't that well versed in all this stuff and I think that's bad advice.
I'm still s-on and I don't see a need for me to s-off since I rarely flash ROMs. I have know problem having to flash the kernel separately. And I've always liked using fastboot rather than the various tools and PH98IMG files since I like to know/be certain about what I'm doing and I don't want to end up with various PH98IMG files lying around not even knowing what they are. Turns out a lot of people don't know that a PH98IMG file can be anything, it's just a method to make things easier.
My take. If you don't plan on flashing a rom per day stay s on.

I'm in the same boat as you. It doesn't seem like ANY website has any information on it yet... Maybe the phone is too new? Or, since it's a small, prepaid company (Literally only in about 5 states right now) the phone just isn't out there yet for any devs to play around with it. I'm trying to see if I can find a way to do it on my own, I've rooted a bunch of phones in the past (Mainly only HTC though, this is my first ever Samsung phone) and I'm really only good at following root instructions, not on figuring out how to actually root a device. So I'm with you there, hopefully there will be a way to root the Galaxy Amp someday. I love the phone, but I really want App2SD as the only issue I really have with the phone is the lack of internal app storage.
I've thought about trying other Samsung Galaxy devices rooting methods, but I am just skeptical if it'll brick the phone or not if I try rooting with a method designed for another phone. But then again, the if the phones are similar, I don't see why anything could go wrong, so it might be worth a shot.

I do agree they are very similar, but I wouldn't wanna brick my device if there's anything different between the devices. Though, the only difference I've really been able to find is the internal storage is lacking compared to the S3 mini, and the VGA front facing camera.. Still, I'll only try it if it won't brick the Galaxy AMP.

Same here as well. I Google for a rooting method for it at least twice a day, and nothing whatsoever. I really want to get it rooted so I can install apps on my SD card (I travel a lot, and use Sygic Navigation as my preferred GPS system, but the maps are flooding my lousy amount of internal storage. It seems to me that the few of us posting in this thread are the only people who have the Samsung Galaxy AMP. AIO does seem to be spreading across the nation now, they just got Service in Texas, and I think California is next, so maybe once it gets out there more, more devs can get their hands on the phone to find a method.
EDIT: Is there a universal way to unlock a bootloader on a Samsung device?? The HTC website will basically unlock any phone's bootloader. I used to have an HTC Rezound, and all I had to do was go to the development section of the HTC website, and unlocked my bootloader directly from the website. Samsung's website has no such thing on it.
Isn't there a way to do it through fastboot? Another phone I had, I literally just went into the comand prompt with Android-sdk, typed "fastboot oem unlock" and unlocked the bootloader that way... Is that possible to do on this Samsung Galaxy Amp?

Same here as well. I Google for a rooting method for it at least twice a day, and nothing whatsoever. I really want to get it rooted so I can install apps on my SD card (I travel a lot, and use Sygic Navigation as my preferred GPS system, but the maps are flooding my lousy amount of internal storage. I'm with you concerning the internal storage. I'm always seeing the insufficient memory notification pop up. It gets frustrating knowing you have a 32gb micro sd just wanting to help!

Right now, for downloaded apps, I have Sygic navigation, Words With Friends, and Ubuntu One Could manager, and my internal memory is full. I honestly don't think there will be a rooting method any time soon, which really sucks. I want root so badly to be able to switch some apps over to my SD card so I can install more than these 3 apps. But, it just doesn't seem this phone is going to get the attention we need.
I just got this phone a couple months back and found this post...was wondering if anyone has found anything?

Hey I tried to root my galaxy amp as if it where a s3 mini but it didn't work. I have been checking the net for any forums but still nothing. Once if I find a way I will make sure to post in the forum.
Possibly a little help coming your way (HAVE NOT TESTED)...
A co-worker of mine got this phone through AIO for his girlfriend. He tried rooting and ended up soft bricking the phone (could still get into Download Mode). He sent the phone into AIO for a replacement BUT we were able to locate the PDA and CSC files for this phone. We HAVE NOT TESTED the 2 files, but i will post them from my MediaFire account. Flash w/ Odin or Heimdell (There are Numerous threads here on XDA if youre unsure how to do it, as it is the SAME procedure on all Galaxy phones). These files SHOULD work as intended, BUT i repeat ARE NOT TESTED.
EDITED: LINKS ARE UP!!
Link for the CSC.MD5 ==> http://www.mediafire.com/download/9...07ATTAMD1_1056913_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Link for the TAR.MD5 ==> http://www.mediafire.com/download/c...407UCAMD1_1056913_REV00_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Glorious Success
THANK YOU!! I had soft-bricked my phone and just flashed these files with Odin 3.04 and it works perfectly. You do realize that you're probably the first person to post the MD5's for this phone for free on the internet? Not even Samsung has these files on their website. Truly, development for this phone can finally begin.
Also, even though the CSC is ATT, it works with Aio. Apparently, they use the same towers so it makes no difference.
Thanks, Rob.

I had a spare Galaxy Amp SGH-i407 and this package did not work for me. I was using framaroot 1.9.1.
Since it spare phone I used the K ingo thing, and that did work. I'm going to play around with root for the time and see if I can unlock the phone.
Worked for me too.

I was able to root my amp with the kingoapp software above.
A couple of things before you run off and do it. First do some research on Google on the software. Even though no one has found anything definitive, there may be malware that comes with it. It definitely does send data to a server in China. I work in the IT department of a medium sized business so as extra precaution, I used a laptop that is waiting to be scrubbed and public wifi just to be safe. If you don't have that luxury you need to ask yourself if its worth it. The second thing is that you have to have the Samsung Kies software installed before the software can connect to your phone. Once that was done it took about 5 minutes for the software to find the correct exploit to get root. Anyway best of luck for everyone.
Unfortunately I got mine rooted too late to be a whole lot of value to me. I ended up buying an att branded Motorola Atrix HD off ebay so I could get a phone with 8 GB of internal memory that was easily rootable, with an unlockable bootloader, a useable recovery and a fairly active developer environment. So my amp is now an insurance policy when i mess up flashing a rom and don't want to be without a usable phone for an hour or so.
well if u had to install Samsung Kies then it means your phone driver is missing and i apologies for my inconvinence..
So recently bought the straight Talk ZTE Valet, and have been searching for a root for this device if anyone knows of any or is interested on trying to develop a root exploit. I'm willing to dump any and all files, as well as try any and all rooting methods. If there is already a root im sorry for making a duplicate post.
I'm also looking for a root process that might work on the ZTE Valet now available on Tracfone. Help please!
Any luck?
I am also looking for a root solution for this phone. Either of you had any luck?
I have tried many methods that have worked on other devices, but no luck yet.
I'm also interested, mainly to move more apps, data. The phone does move some apps to a micro SD but not all.

have you guys tried superone click? i have to ask is it gingerbread or what os android version is it?
It is JB 4.1. I haven't tried Superone but will check it out. My root experience has been limited with a Hisense tablet and methods specific to that.

The ZTE Valet Z665 has JB (4.1.1).
So far, I've tried Bin4ry (v32), framaroot (1.6.1), and poot (current version). None worked. In looking at superoneclick, I might not be understanding things very well but it appears to require a CWM image which does not (yet) exist - is that right?
What other methods appear to be worth a try and what have people tried on the ZTE Valet? Anyone aware of a source for the stock ROM? Are there other phones sufficiently similar where the CWM recovery would function on the Valet?
BTW, I just picked up my ZTE Valet at Fred Meyer where it was on sale for $49.99 (Tracfone, no contract). It's a great buy for that price. The sale is over but if interested, keep an eye out for the ads.
Like others, thanks for any ideas.

OK - tried superoneclick and z4root. These in addition to Bin4ry, framaroot, and poot didn't work. I'm a novice at this and am nervous trying some of these options that seem to lack proper pedigree and openness. Also, since I don't have a backup, a more invasive technique also worries me. I'm hoping one of you brave souls will try something out and hopefully give some of us some specifics on what you did to get this phone rooted. It would also be helpful to know what you did actually try (details) that didn't work. Thanks.
Update: Also just tried the adb method which didn't work for me http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224774[/adb root guide].
Although I took care in trying each of the methods mentioned above and repeated them, I could have screwed up. So ... maybe someone else can report their results just to be sure. I would not re-try z4root but the others don't seem too harmful and my phone still works.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1224774

My ZTE turned out to be defective. Screen become unresponsive even after going to recovery, trying to wipe caches/reformatting and even finally attemting to restore to factory state. K-mart wouldn't accept it for an exchange since I bought it out of state. TracFone says they will'll replace it after I ship it to them on their dime. Up until this I liked the phone, except for sound clarity outgoing seemed poorer than mt LG290c from one test from a noisy place.
New phone received and checks out OK enuf to keep. WiFi OK at home but only fair with weak source. Doing this on my Hisense Sero 7 Pro which does better with less than strongest wifi. Screen slightly less crisp at lower brightness than original when it worked. Got 9x more min, text, MB than expected when transferred from old phone so definitely keeping.

I just bought this phone about 2wo weeks ago, & it's actually not a bad for a Tracfone. It runs on version 5.1.1. But forget specs lol. It's currently not activated, & I'm not so sure if that matters when it comes to the actual process of Rooting. I downloaded KingRoot, but I seen that before Rooting I would have to unlock the bootloader. So I followed the procedures only to stumble upon something wasn't right.. I couldn't put my phone in either fastboot, download, or recovery mode.. No matter what I did. I've tried every guide & forum, but nothing. I finally called my service provider to see if they could figure out what the problem was. They came to tell me that I wasn't going to be able to access those features until I activate the phone. (which sounds really suspicious & stupid) I noticed I can access safe mode. What sounds more suspect is that I have to pay for a plan just to activate it, which I never had to do with a phone before. Nevertheless, to sum it all up.. Is there an actual way around this craziness? I never had to go thru this much to root a phone. I honestly feel like there is no point of having an android without unleashing it's true potential. Please, any help would be great. :fingers-crossed:
I have the same phone and the same problem. Still have yet to find a way. anybody?
Looks as though Straight Talk (ST) sets it up that way. I have had other straight talk phones and have always had issues rooting their phones. In fact I have never been able to root their phones. Please someone, show us a work around solution these ST phones.
Same on net 10. Think its an lg thang...
activated my phone and have same prob...help
Funny how I have a LG Optimus Fuel that has really crappy specs and can root easily with android kitkat but this phone is lollipop and better specs and newer can't root at all. I think it is more bootloader locked and only ones that are not locked are mediocre to expensive phones from the manufacturer now. My Optimus Fuel is a Tracfone too, just like the Rebel. I doubt anyone is interested in getting this one rooted. I would not mind because when I rooted my Optimus Fuel it let me put my Micro SD Card into exfat instead of fat32, which exfat sound quality is better and boosted volume a couple db. Only thing with Optimus one is that 512mb makes the music randomly skip. So that is one reason to get the Rebel rooted but we are SOL with this device.
Straight Talk is newer than Tracfone, because Tracfone created Straight Talk. Not the other way around. Tracfone has been around the longest.

Have you tried shutting the phone off, and pressing the buttons after connecting to pc. I don't remember the exact buttons you press. I have worked on a few lg phones before and that was the only way i was able to obtain the mode i needed.
Cannot Root my LG Rebel LTE (L44VL)
I am also having problems trying to Root my my LG Rebel LTE (L44VL) too. My Backup&Restore program of choice is Titanium, but it requires that my system needs to be "Rooted" first. I couldn't find any settings to do this (even when I enter 'Developer Mode'). I've even tried several popular Rooting app tools, including RootKing and Kingo Root (Mobile Version), but they all were not able to Root my system. Please help me with this problem...thank you very much.
At the moment I really only need to backup the critical *system* files, any recommendations?
Looks like this phone is never going to get the root attention it needs. It been out about a year now since release and nothing at all. No one cares about this phone.
Have any of you tried going into developer options and turning on the oem unlock option before trying to get into download mode or anything? Just a thought guys...
As for the optimus fuel, install towelroot. open it, tap the title/symbol 3x, change the 2nd from last digit to "zero". Tap "make it rain". Should root it in literally like 3secs...

No this phone sucks without root though lol.
I've been fiddling with this phone for months, the farthest I've managed to get was a temp root, which is undone when the phone is reset. My theory is that it's possible, if done within the timeframe before the phone resets itself, whether that means pushing files through adb or shell, or flashing a custom Rom. My phone has been through a number of battles, and has seen more bricks than a brick wall..but, I'm still at it.

This phone is the same as the Optimus Zone 3, or the LG Leon, or the LG K4, however the Optimus Zone 3 seems to be its direct ancestor.
I have successfully temp rooted with kingroot 5.2.2 and oem unlock, problem is a random crash/reboot soon follows which of course flushes all the root.
We worked on this phone and the zone 3 a few years back. Never had any luck with this handset. It's another cheap undesirable that will most likely not see any development for itself any time soon.
