Newbee had it all and then lost it - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to Mobile os. I have a HTC HD2 and I hate Windows I run Ubuntu on my desktop. I wanted to have android on my phone I went to a uk site and downloaded froyo with sense. Installed it. It ran. Everything worked. GPS. Weather. Put all my info in. Everything was Rosey. Then I touched the flag button, and everything froze. I tried to hard reset. When I touched CLRCAD It said improper cert. or parts missing. It will not let me run anything but windows. I have reformated the sd several times and used several different builds nothing works but windows. Is this something new or does this always happens to duffies like me?

Upgrading my phone for the 1st time.

I have Verizon Wireless service. I want to upgrade my phone for the first time. I've been reading alot and the Wiki but it doesn't go into great detal about how to do it. I want to make sure I have got everything down correctly first.
- First, get my phones ESN, MSID, Security, EPST, and M. IP settings by using ##778, etc.
- Second, I unlock the phone and install BootLoader 2.40 per Wiki instructions.
- Third, I install Titan_Radio_ROM_3.42.30 by coping TITAIMG.nbh to my SD mini card and running bootloader by pressing the 3 keys.
- Fourth, I install dcd_titan_kitchen_3.2.2 by running it and compiling it and coping the created RUU_signed.nbh after renaming it to TITAIMG.nbh and copying it to the SD card and running bootloader by using the 3 keys.
I pretty much checked everything before I compiled it, except items that did the same thing or that was double like the different versions of the camera. Is that OK, or will it eat up all my memory, or will I have other problems? I didn't know what alot of the stuff was, so I thought it would just be best to install everything. Also, the wiki talks about choosing the right carrier and not more then one carrier, but that option wasn't there. I assume that's what the VZ cab is now here for?
- Fifth, copy dcd Verizon Carrier 20080706.cab to the SD card and run that.
Then I do a soft reset and everything should be working? Is that right? Did I miss anything?
I also don't understand the A-key problem and how to avoid it.
I'm also confused about not booting after you upgrade the ROM and after the screen calibration the carrier customisations will run and alter my EPST settings to the operators settings and my phone will be configured to the wrong service. What's that about?
Will it allow me to run the verizon cab file from the SD card after I install the ROM without having to soft boot the phone?
Also, can I use PIM backup and restore to backup to my SD card and then restore after the ROM upgrade? Will that be a problem?
Thanks for your help and time.
Long post, so here is mine:
Your four steps are pretty close, other than mentioning the formatting of the sd card which you probably already know how to do via cmd, you have it right.
If you are not checking extra boxes in the kitchen, you can just use the ROM he posts underneath. If you want standard games, x-button, different versions of the phone or camera, etc or if you want to install your own OEMs then the kitchen is for you. Sounds like you are just planning on hitting everything, which I would suggest against (you don't want or need two phone versions, two cameras, etc). Leave the items where they are unless you know why you are changing them, dont click everything. Do some research on each item by googling xda here.
With regard to carrier cabs, run your carrier cab afterward to get functionality. Yes you can run from SD. I have never needed to do an A-Key reset, but others had to after upgrading radio. Just call verizon and tell them you are not able to authenticate your phone and they will reset your phone for you. Don't worry about what it is or why it happens.
Letting customizations run is for when you run the sprint update, which it doesn't sound like you are doing. If you are running the updates over sd card, you can let the customizations run, but since you dont have UC (research here) there is nothing to run so no worries; it will try to run your UC and see there is nothing there and just reboot, kewl. Don't use backups (Sprite or SPB or otherwise, best to use activesync and UC (see above).
Yes, the simple stuff I left out like formatting the card, etc. I understand that.
I guess I need to use the Kitchen because their are some items in there that I want, and some items that I don't know what they are, and I'll look into it like you said instead of just checking everything just incase it's something I might want or need in the future. Like I said I didn't click on everything, stuff that do the same thing, or different versions of the same thing I didn't click on. So, I think I just clicked on everything but Enterprise + IPSECVPN, Camera 4.05.30525.00, HTC CommManager - Titan 8 Button, and HTC Titan PhoneCanvas (Dailer).
It sounds like I won't need Enterprise + IPSECVPN, because it sounds like it's for some kind of Enterprise network with VPN, and I don't have something like that. I would like to know the difference between the version 4 & 5 of the Camera. I assume version 5 is better. I assume that the Touch 10 is better then the Titan 8 button, but would like to know the differences, also the differences in the Dialers. I assumed the Vogue was preffered since it was the default one that was checked. I haven't checked out the link you left for me yet, so I'll do that to see if I can see the differences.
Do I do a soft reset after I install the Radio and before I install the ROM and after I install the ROM and before I install the Carrier Cab file?
I'm having problems doing backups now. I don't have activesync because I have Vista and it doesn't use activesync. I was able to do backups with Outook and Windows, but they won't work anymore. I was using the USB data cable and they were working fine, but then I got a Bluetooth Dongle and installed that and it messed everything up. I tried one that was compatible with XP and downloaded different drivers and I couldn't get it to work. So, I purchased one that was compatible with Vista and it would sync but not backup my contacts and appointments with Outlook like it would with the data cable. I tried using the USB cable and it won't work anymore either. I can't even get it to make a connection anymore, and it will show an error on the phone. That's why I got the PIM backup and restore software to backup to and from the SD card. I haven't used it yet. I was going to try and use it, and then do a Hard Reset and then restore my data to my phone and try to get it to backup to my Outlook like it used to with the USB Cable. If I can get that to work I was going to try and do the Titan ROM update. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for all the help!! Take care!

Is there a size limit to the ROM file RUU_signed.nbh? There should be. Let me know. Thanks.. Steve
Since this is your first ROM upgrade I think you should avoid the kitchen for now and just use DCD's compiled rom. (this is just my opinion) It will really simplify things for you.
As for PIM backup I would think it would work fine for contacts, but I think you will run into issues if you wan to restore SMS backups because of going from WM6 to 6.1 and the threading SMS that is used for 6.1.
I also saw this http://www.dashwire.com/ I haven't used it yet, but its free online solution for backing up your PPC.
As far as your question for soft-resets go, When you run the update the phone should reset on its own. I don't know why your active sync isn't working, but I would try and get it to work before running these updates to ensure proper connectivity of your device before running these updates.

Thats what you would need to get it to connect.
Gluck!

I've used PIM Backup since Jan of this year, and have had no issues restoring any SMS from a WM6 to WM6.1. It goes through and threads it all the 1st time you open up messaging, so if you have a large amount of messages, it will take a while to thread it all the 1st time you open it up....
For my first time I did not use the kitchen. I found it pretty easy to do. Just make sure you load the radio b4 the rom.
I just wanted to thank everybody for all there feedback and help, it was very helpful. The 3 main reasons I need to do the ROM update is to take advantage of the new features of WM6.1 and I need to be able to install Java and get my TomTom GPS software working. That's the 3 main reasons right now.
My phone is so messed up right now it's always locking up and having alot of problems from maybe all the apps I installed and tested and stuff. I need to reset it like 3 or 4 times a day. I think that's why I can't sync it with my computer anymore. I'm going to just back it up to the SD card and do a hard reset and get it working again and syncing with my computer and then do the ROM upgrade, etc. I will take your advice and do the stock ROM at first to figure out how to do the upgrade. I will then have to use the Kitchen to enable the GPS and the Java, right? When I do the Kitchen ROM later will I just need to upgrade the ROM, and not worry about any of the other procedures?
Also, when I do use the kitchen to create the ROM what is the size limitation on the ROM file?
Do you also have an option on which Dailer and Camera software?
Thanks again and wish me luck! LOL
Well, I downloaded the DCD compiled rom and it's filename is dcd_titan_3.2.2.exe and I ran it and it doesn't look like you can install it via the SD card. It looks like you have to do it via a PC Sync. Can you do a PC Sync after installing the Radio? Well, let me know. I think I'm ready to get started now. Thanks..
OK, well I got my phone to sync with my PC, but it sometimes has connection and disconnection problems, but I was able to get it to sync everything with my PC once.
I ran EPST and got my ESN and MSID, but I'm not sure what security information I should copy and I can't find the MSN number. There is alot of M.IP information. Do I copy everything in the M.IP Settings and M.IP Default Profile? Is there anything else I'm missing? Thanks.
May I suggest you take a digital Picture and scroll down and take a second one. This eliminates any questions on Handwriting and then blow them up on your PC if you have bad vision.
I found this software and it's even better, it not only allows you to do screenshots, but you can totally control your phone and enter data, etc. from your PC, and it's free!!

Eris unable to connect via USB stock or rooted

This is relating to a friend's Eris. Awhile back he went to the Kaos rom and had been enjoying it. Wanted to switch to the newer version of it, but after he finished the upgrade USB functionality disappeared.
When connected it still charges, but that's it. You can't see the phone or USB storage via a computer. Tried this on a couple of computers which I normally connect phones to, as well as a brand new XP install. USBDview showed no USB device connectivity from the phone.
Found out some basic terminal commands weren't working, neither was SU so I took the phone and flashed it back to stock (FlashBack 2.1), wiped everything, as if the phone was right out of the box. Got everything back up and running in pure Eris Verizon stock mode. Still no USB.
Used the famous "1 click" Eris root, burned the rootme.zip, and verified root/SU/terminal commands were working. Then tried USB. Nothing. Installed a couple of different roms. Still nothing. Installed the new Kaos one.. nope, no dice. Cleared Dalvik each time. I got ADB to work but only through wifi since there's no USB connection.
We spent probably 4 hours on this. Searched all the places I could think of, nobody seems to have a similar problem.
Something is whacked on the phone, either USB service files or USB hardware (such as the connector on the phone).. or maybe you guys can lend a hand. Tried different PC's, different USB cables. Nothing worked.
Did you try rebooting both the phone and the PC, with the phone disconnected?
Could be that the hardware (connector or electronics) is fried and the occurrence of that and the ROM flashing was merely coincidental. That seems like the highest probability given that you've tried the phone out on multiple PCs and also replaced the software with the factory software.
Does the PC make any noises ("ker-dunk" or "ker-donk") when you plug the phone in via USB?
When it is plugged in, have you looked in the (Windows) device manager at each of the devices underneath each "Universal Serial Bus Controller", to see if any of them have VID_/PID_ pairs such as:
0BB4:0C98 (USB Debugging On - Composite allows ADB and/or Mass Storage)
0BB4:0FFF (Fastboot/HBOOT/RUU modes)
0BB4:0FF9 (USB Debugging Off - Mass Storage only)
See this post for a little background on how to poke around with Windows drivers.
Frankly though, from the way you've described things, it sounds like a hardware problem.
If you can get hold of a Mac or a Linux PC, I'd see if it works there. With my Mac, anyway, I need no drivers to communicate with the Eris - it just works. Windows just seems to be a PITA sometimes with Erises.

Yeah been through all of that, no noises. I had the Hardware tree expanded and had USBDeviceView running (application which gives you every nook & cranny detail on USB connections) and it showed nothing.
The second I plugged anything else in, it instantly showed up.
I think the next step is to grab some probes and check the data pins on the phone.
Thanks for the helpful replies so far.
Try rebooting into recovery and enabling usb ms toggle. Worked for me and I was having the same problem. Once the SD card loaded on the PC I backed up everything important (including the rom i wanted to use next), deleted everything else, and then formatted the card to Fat32 (not changing the name and using full format NOT quick). Afterwords I put the rom back onto the freshly wiped SD, hit the trackball to disable USB ms, and then i wiped the data and dalvik, flashed the rom, let it load and sync for a few, plugged it in and eureka!! USB woked again on the phone and PC.

Good suggestion. Now that you mention it, I think I've seen this work to get some people going again.
We tried the MS toggle switch, one of the first things actually. Here's what happened. When he pressed it, it said it successfully unmounted. In doing so it took away the option on the menu to 'return' to the previous menu (paraphrasing here). The only way the option would return is if you re-mounted it.
Here's the tricky one though, if you didn't remount the memory it didn't matter anyhow because it would re-mount itself in a bout a minute or so of idle time at the screen. We tried simply taking the battery out after receiving the success screen, but found out it was still mounted anyhow afterward.
One thing you pose which does interest me is formatting the SD card again. Even though I ran a check and it comes up fine and we've been copying files to/from it, I wonder if a good thorough formatting would help. Sometimes that's fixed problems in the past. Definitely will try that next, and before using it will wipe the cache and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!
We'll post up our findings once we can re-try this stuff.
Well I'm glad to offer any help, after all, I was having a wicked similar problem to yours. I believe your correct about the SD. I think it was the fresh format that did the trick. From what I've heard, the stock Eris SD card just isn't that great. There not meant for constant writing and I think just my regular usage (apps2sd, flashin roms frequently, downloading torrents, and heavy data usage) all played a role in screwing up the SD card. Beause as you flash roms, unless its 2.2 to 2.1 or vice-versa, the SD card never gets touched. I consistently had about 4.5gb filled out of the 7 at all time, sometimes more. I would open up the SD and not even recognize half the folders or files. I have a feeling some of those files were telling my phone NOT to connect via USB or install or uninstall ANY apps. That was my exact problem, and the format cleared it all up perfectly first try. After days of troubleshooting, tweaking in adb, flashing multiple froyo roms only to find nothing would install, and more or less being p*ssed off at my eris u can imagine how happy I was lol.

[Q] Rom update failing after trying multiple solutions.

I've been working at this for about 2 hours now. All I want is to update my phone to Android 2.
The situation is as follows:
I have an original HTC Hero, build 1.76.405.6 etc. I'm trying to install the ROM update to 2.73.405.5. I have to install it with HTCSync. Since I'm on Windows 7, the original HTCSync that came with the phone has issues with the drivers. I've tried several ways of installing those drivers manually, and eventually resorted to using the new all-purpose HTCSync from the HTC website. The program itself works, but, now, when I'm trying to sync, that action itself does not work. If I try to install the update, the connection turns off. If I try to sync the files, it fails to access the PIM. And I already made Outlook my default program on PC, which, according to sources, should have helped the issue.
Oh, and it seems I can't download apps through the marketplace at this time anymore either. I'm not sure if this is related or not, but better safe than sorry, right?
I can't find anything else on this in the archives, so I'm asking you all for help.
Oh, and my knowledge of these kinds of phones is barely above digibetic, so, please, I beg of you, no solutions that have me crack open the entire software shell, or something like that?
Thanks in forward, Sonto

Step by Step Noob Screwups

So, I am not 100% certain where I went wrong in all of this, but I know that I did enough to warrant the hassle. If anyone can step in and help educate me for next go-around, I would appreciate it.
I had 4.1.8.3 with Gingerblur 3.1 installed, Gingerbreak via adb, GladEnabler sideloading, webtop modded, debian installed in webtop, Blue Mist theme with Launcher Pro Plus, and the Blue Mist themed Launcher Pro stuffs. I was starting to get some constant restarts of Launcher Pro, wasn't really sure what to do with that, but didn't mess around with it really. I had this setup for a little while, was starting to think about doing it all over, so I got a little risky. I started messing with freezing things in Titanium Backup without knowing truely what to do, thinking thaw was an easy undo. Things were starting to slow up on me and I wanted to experiment with breathing new life into the phone. I ended up borking my Blur accounts irreversibly and my contacts would not sync anymore. I only had the phone numbers that I had manually entered. I had them backed up on the PC and Lookout website, but it seemed like a good time to start over fresh. I already had a nandroid backup from a week earlier, so I did a full app+data backup in Titanium and copied over both SD cards to my PC. Last night I flashed 4.1.5.7 firmware and 4.1.8.3 service firmware and started all over.
I first ran into problems getting adb to recognize my device, so I installed the Android SDK software for Win7 and it updated my adb drivers. Great, it worked. Gingerbreak via adb (remembering to unmount my internal SD card this time) and we have root. Then I ran Glad Enabler, worked great. Then I installed Titanium from the market, restored user apps with data selectively. Everything is looking pretty good, figured I would try out the Atrix mods app in the dev forum. At that point I read closer that the early USB enumeration and 2nd-init scripts needed the NFHimself modded Gingerbreak to utilize the other mods, so I ran that version of gingerbreak (yeah, with root access already) to get files in the right location, everything seemed to go smoothly. At 4:30 am, I called it quits for the night.
In the morning, I figured I would just theme it so I tried out Motobread. Beautiful, btw. I was trying to figure why Titanium wasn't recognizing my Pro license key, and it said to check in settings/applications to see where it was installed. Hmmm, Settings isn't even in the app drawer anymore. So I ran Settings from the home menu and it did nothing. So, I un-rooted with NFHimself's app, re-flashed the 4.1.8.3 service firmware and got the Settings menu back. I then ran NFHimself's Gingerbreak, early USB enumeration and 2nd init, and everything is looking fine.
So now I'm getting ready to CWM install GladiAtrix, installed Flash 10.3 from the market, checked that it worked, and off we go! Everything seemed to go smoothly, the hulu fix works! Checked the webtop stuff when the kids went up for their naps, the menu didn't pop up with HDMI connection, and when I opened it from the app drawer, it told me no loaded web pages for webtop or something to that effect, so I ran the fix patch in CWM and I'm all set. Lxterminal and all.
New nandroid backup now, I guess.
Lessons learned:
-before messing with Blur services, get ready for a long night
-be a little less willing to say 'what the hell' before running something for the first time
Hopefully everyone sees that: a) all of these development tools work if installed correctly, and b) they don't necessarily work if installed incorrectly. I hope someone can learn from my mistakes.

Made a mistake by changing the systems folder permissions now phone is all wacky?

So last night i flashed cr droid 7.1 and was working great. But since theres no xposed for it yet i went online looking for a way to get rid of youtube ads. And i did but i messed up a step and instead of changing the app folder permissions, i changed the system folder permissions. When i did so, the phone would just bootloop into recovery. So i flashed the rom again and worked great ( in fact, still does. Im posting from the very same phone) except now i have no sound, camera doesnt work, microphone says is being used all the time so phone calls are impossible, music wont play, videos do not play.... the phone is kind of useless besides just being able to text and browse ( and only when data works, because sometimes it doesn't, and have to reboot phone to make it work.
What ive tried so far has been:
Reverted permissions manually.
Restored to a past backup.
Wiped clean and tries a couple different roms
restored to 100%stock
Nothing seems to work and i am a loss right now and could really use some help
thanks in advance!
by the way, the phone is a lg g4, right now is all stock besides the bootloader being unlocked.
also noticed that while the phone is recognized under devices and printers, i cant connect to adb and cant access the storage because it wont show on the explorer, i tried uninstalling drivers and installing recomended ones, letting windows recognize the phone, etc, and while it does recognize it, the aforementioned things happen.
