Celb or kaos? - Droid Eris Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

From a performance and functionality stand point which is the better froyo rom?
Sent from my Eris using XDA App

I'm not going to say what is the BETTER rom. They are both very good. My personal opinion is celb if I had to choose between the two. Also don't forget about cyanogentazz which is also a very good froyo rom.

You could also give Nonsensikal a try its the newest of the Froyo builds.

Kaos updates his ROM it seems like every two days. That's good because you know he is active in developing the ROM. Most are no wipe, so updates are simple.
In fact, he posted an update the other day on the same day that the new search was introduced. Included in the ROM.
That being said, my daily is CELB Froyo. ELB was my first rooted ROM.

Is there really that much of a difference between the froyo roms? It seems to me that they update the same things basically at the same time. I assume they all talk on andIRC cause Ive seen them all in there I believe. The main source comes from cynaogen, kernels from another person, vender trees from yet another, so whats the differences, besides name and Background Picture?

+1 for Nonsensikal, i just flashed it and it is the most stable Froyo rom yet. Plus the blue is pretty awesome.

They all add their own tweaks for speed and battery life and things like that. They add their own backgrounds and ringtones. Also system apps. I actually switched back to tazz. I love the customizable power widget (would be even better if I could choose the indicator color. Going for a red theme don't know If that's even possible though). Also the toggle 2g app is awesome. And the themed version I also like. Now I don't have to fool around with metamorph. Its all just a matter of personal preference.

I downloaded Power Widget from the Market (I think it's like a buck or 2) and you can alter the indicator to any color you want. You can also adjust the transparency, have up to 7 buttons on the widget, and choose the size. I have 7 buttons on 1 widget and it's 1x3 in size.

I used Kaos. Out of all the ones I tried had the least bugs and Kaos is a classy dev on top of it, not like the others are not. I just tried to stick with Kaos because he had originally brought Froyo to the Eris.

Kaos seems to work the best for me. But in the end, all the Froyo roms have a bit of each dev in them. Go with what works best for you.

I agree with samlemur. I've tried kaos and tazz and I prefer kaos. Mostly because it had the camera fix first and I use the camera heavily.

Well okay I am joking. But I'm not. It Cyanogen Eris Lightning Bolt. Not some kind of rom celebrities use.

I'm running kaos but it's hard to say, I flash between these froyo kind of often as these awesome devs we have consistently conjure them up for us. Lately I've been between nonsensikal and kaos, kaos froyo v32 may be the smoothest and quickest so far with less lag than other versions/roms.

2.2 roms

Hi, i was wondering what your favorite 2.2 (froyo) roms where, and why.
I am aware of two:
KayosFroyo and Cyanogen tazz
are there more than those? what one is your favorite?
Well by a simple glance at the thread list you can see all the Froyo roms available, but besides that I don't think this belongs in the development section.

I have tried them both and have to say that I like Cyanogen better. The Kayos made my launcher freeze up a lot, especially when it changed from portrait to landscape. I also noticed that when I backed out of an app sometimes it would have to reload it too. (the launcher) I also feel like Cyanogen is faster.Other than that they are both great roms.
i believe there is a total of 4 froyo roms for the eris. CELB Froyo by Conap, Nonsensikal by listyb01, cyanogen tazz by tazzpatriot, and kaos froyo by kaos. i think all the froyo roms are great. i have been flashing between cyanogentazz and celbfroyo from the start and i usually end up sticking with celb. everyday it seems that all the froyo roms have an update available and all of them seem very stable to me. i would give the links to these roms but i cant post links in the forums yet. so you have to search but its worth checking out the other two roms that you did not mention.

What ROM is everybody using

Hey everybody, I just order a Fascinate today and was interested in what ROM you guys/girls prefer to use. Im switching from a droid 2, and previously a droid 1, which had a great ROM community. I think its fantastic that there are so many Galaxy S phones but I think it is unfortunate that Roms are not applicable across models.
In addition to selecting what rom you are using it would be great to say what works great and what is still buggy. Please let me know if I forgot anything.

Welcome to the community!
Personally, I've been using jt1134's Super Clean with AOSP. Bubby323's Magic with AOSP is looking very promising. I tested version 0.2 for a couple days. and I think 0.3 will be a winner.
We're just getting started here in month 2 of the Fascinate's release, and there has already been some spectacular progress, mainly in the kernel department. There are some familiar names from the D1 community at work over here, and once FroYo drops for this phone, things should REALLY take off! (Seriously, who wants to work on a version of the OS that is already out of date, and will be replaced any minute now?)
I am loving that Blue Breeze!
Actually thought there would be more out there by now. Or at least some themes. I am sure, in time!

so how are you liking it compared to your droid 2?
using Zinc V1.0 right now. So far i'm liking it, but there's not a whole lot of difference in anything right now. I've tried jt's clean, blue breeze, aosp magic and Zinc, and they're pretty much all variations on a theme. not that there's anything wrong with that, i'm simply saying whatever you pick you can't go wrong, and it's easy to change anything you don't like about any one of them.

[Q] Best Gingerbread ROM?

So I've been away from XDA for a little bit... (well just not checking it everyday like I used to)... but I was wondering if I could get some peoples opinions on which of the latest Gingerbread ROMs is the best one? I wanna give GB a test run and see if I like it on my Eris but want to get some feedback to see which ROM would be best to test first...
I have CyanogenMOD 7.0.0 RC1 Gingerbread NIGHTLY for the Droid Eris (workshed), and It's really good, one of the best ones out there.

I think Kaos has a build available as well. I agree you should try each one if your goal is to play around and "test". Give Shed a minute to update his latest release (1.8) by flashing one of the other three available builds, including the above quoted item.
Ginger Tazz 10 /3.3.11/ Stable/Blackened Ginger 2/2/22/11 {cm7} - Offers an interesting looking "Blackened" version as well

[ROM] GSB v1.8 | GingerBread 2.3.3 [CM7.0.0 RC1 NIGHTLY][3-3-2011] - my current driver, running 1.7 now and will wait until 1.8 is updated as outlined by Shed in his most recent post.

I like all of LP's transition effects, but I settled on "Scale". I hope they will add a "Random" option to change the transition effect between all the options, not in one series of flips, but between flipping sessions.
I agree. gingerbread nightly is a good one
GSB is indeed a great build. I tried all the other roms and nothing is more stable than GSB. Though, I do believe that 1.6 is the most stable and the only version that works with swype for me.

I myself had fallen for the 'Scale' effect in LP. I recently installed Go Launcher EX (can't post you a link, check it out on market.android), I'm liking it...though I seem to be addicted to change, can't keep the same theme/apps for longer than a week. Especially with all the ROM flashing.
And PS, Go Launcher has that 'Random' screen transition option you're looking for. Give it a shot should you feel so inclined. There doesn't seem to be a 'Scale' equivalent, but 'Bulldoze' is an interesting alternative animation. I use the 'Roll' effect right now because it suits my theme.
Sorry to get so far off-topic.

Thanks! That's one of those apps/launchers that I thought looked interesting way back but it was too early in development. Now that it's matured some, it may be time for me to take a serious look at it.

I'm happy with GSB, I've never tried GingerTazz but I'm sure it's good too. When they both came out, I just couldn't decided which one to flash.
Workshed had done some cool stuff with DualROM, Tazz had done cool stuff with the FroyoSense rom.
I literally did eenie-meenie-miney-mo to pick between the two. And GSB was what I ended up with just by chance.
I can't judge the different GB roms as I have only just installed GSB about 15 mins ago, but the sheer difference in speed and responsiveness from froyo to GSB is dramatic.

[Q] ROM Question: Which is the ABSOLUTE fastest?

I need to narrow down my search for the fastest Eris ROM available as I use my Eris for work and speed is more important to me than beauty (but if both can be accomplished, then by all means... ) Anyway, any suggestions? Also, along the same line, will 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 ROMs be quickest (as well as Sense-based vs. Non-Sense-based)? I have tried a few ROMs, but am looking to your opinion so that I don't wind up testing every ROM . Also, I have bought LauncherPro Plus and Beautiful Widgets, so Sense widgets aren't a huge deal to me. Thanks!

It's impossible to say - everybody's mix of apps is different, and what one person reports as faster another may report as slower. It's really not that hard to flash a few ROMs and try them out for a while and see what works best for you.

Pretty much this. But I will say, Gingerbread ROMs are supposed to be the fastest, and non-Sense should be faster than Sense any day.
KaosFroyo was insane when i was there, but now i use the Gingerbread rom that is supposedly a port of CM7 which has been running pretty good for me
None sense Gingerbread roms definitely from my experience are the quickest I've tried.

I would generally agree that non-sense/gb roms are going to be your best bet. KaosFroyo, may be a good route to go; especially if you need stability, or anything aosp, and without any bloat.... You may also play around with using different launchers too, as they can effect the speed, stability, and general feel of any rom. I like LP, but others are sleeker and smoother. There are also tons of Benchmark tests on the market that can be used if you want to see numbers- but I agree that your mix of apps/rom/launcher/ and intended use will greatly influence what fits you best.
And anything that is fast already can be overclocked..... setcpu has some great advanced settings that can help you find a balance of speed/battery useage (unless you have a charger/usb charger nearby in your line of work).

[Q] Which GB ROM?

Hello,
I have got the itch to try a GB ROM again. I'm currently running Project V and it's great, but i want some change. I tried CM7 RC1 when it first came out and couldn't deal with the horrible battery life. But I figure it's been quite a while so things may have improved since then. What would be everyone's suggestion on the best one? I don't like crazy themes or anything. I'm just looking for a stock GB look with decent battery life and stability. Thanks in advance!

Calm down now, it's nothing personal. I'm sure it runs just fine. I just like the stock GB look.
The cm7 have drastically improved battery is on part with most other GB roms. I personally love Miui revamped LE it is incredibly fast and the developers are extremely active in the forum. Along with that they update the ROM every Friday and you always think there is no way it can get better but somehow they always seem to exceed expectations

Biffmod
I personally find Simply Honey to be a bit much as well (no offense explodingboy, just not to my taste). So, leaning toward a stock-ish ROM, I recommend Biffmod Vibrant. It's basically CM7, but with a bunch of tweaks to fix the common complaints and a stock look. Here are the changes:
Features:
*Mix of AOSP/cm7 - 2.3.5
*black launcher2
*black camera
*notification widgets
*overclock capable kernel (1.7ghz)
*voodoo color and sound
*BLN/LED Notifications (on by default, the BLN app is not compatible)
*Ricktips
*glitch kernel HL thanks TK-Glitch

I've been using it ever since I switched from my HD2 to the Vibrant, and it's a dream. The only issue I've encountered is a "problem" with the overclocking: the kernel says it can go up to 1.7Ghz, but in my experience it tops out at about 1.4Ghz before the phone starts to freeze up. Other than that, like I said, it's great—I fully recommend it.

I just wanted to chime in, I've tried your rom before and it was fantastic (in fact, i think it was the first one to have bln fixed when all the other roms had broken bln). However, I was past my honeycomb theme phase and is looking for a more stock gb (or close to it) look now. I constantly search for themes for your rom that can make it look like stock but to no avail I think if you added a stock theme zip, you will be able to increase your user base by quite a significant amount of people.
It's great--I easily go a whole day with moderate to heavy Wifi usage (I don't have data) without having to plugin.

I ended up flashing Biffmod last night. It is amazing so far. So smooth and I haven't had a single issue yet. I also ended up flashing the newest Bali Kernel and have it UV'ed quite substantially. We'll see how it does on battery.
Thanks for the advice.
I personally prefer CM7 or Bionix 1.3.1
Every GB rom I've tried has not had a working GPS. I travel for a living so I need this to work. I have since gone back to 2.2 so my GPS works but out of curiosity, is there a GB rom/kernel that supports reliable GPS functionality?
I could be wrong but I think some of the gps work. GPS worked fine for me on Simply Honey 5.0, which I loved. I liked the themeing, especially the pink theme made to go with it!! I just decided to give Trigger (GB not Froyo) a try and I am equally happy with it. GPS isn't a huge issue for me, but I noticed on Trigger I get locks but they are not accurate, usually within 100ft. I also haven't tweaked any of the settings or tried any of the fixes. There are lots of great GB roms out there...just play around and see what suits you best. My Vibrant has always had great gps I've read that some GPS just don't work well on Vibrants.
I personally really like the AOSP GB Roms, Trigger, CM7 and MIUI are all great... have not tried Biffmod yet, but I intend to sometime.
Kernel-wise, I really like Glitch V11 HL
No problem!

I ended up flashing Biffmod last night. It is amazing so far. So smooth and I haven't had a single issue yet. I also ended up flashing the newest Bali Kernel and have it UV'ed quite substantially. We'll see how it does on battery.
Thanks for the advice.

I'm back on project v. The battery life was pretty bad for me on biffmod (yes I calibrated the battery). I was only getting about 7-8 hours. Really wish it had been better cause it ran awesome.

] The only issue I've encountered is a "problem" with the overclocking: the kernel says it can go up to 1.7Ghz, but in my experience it tops out at about 1.4Ghz before the phone starts to freeze up. Other than that, like I said, it's great—I fully recommend it.

It's not a kernel issue. It's just that your vibrant cant handle the overclock as all devices overclock and undervolt differently
