What should be the wallpaper dimensions for a good looking wallpaper?
960x800 if im not mistaken.
Ideally you want 960x800.
A tip for farming the vast oasis that is Google Image Search for wallpapers. Not very many wallpapers come in 960x800 sizes....but there are tons at 1280x1024 and that is the closest of the standard "desktop" type wallpapers in aspect ratio (960x800 is 1.20, while 1280x1024 is 1.25) to our screen requirements.
So you can batch re-size tons of existing 1280x1024 wallpapers with very little image distortion, or if you do keep aspect ratio's intact you end up trimming very little. The market app Wallpaper Set And Save will auto-resize 1280x1024 correctly for us as well if you want to be lazy and not batch resize images before transferring them to the phone.
Just a handy tip or two...

Is there a way to set the wallpaper on the Mini Pro, without having to crop the image? I'm having a little bit of a poor experience in getting the wallpaper the way I want. Tried 240 x 320 sized images and same thing. Any ideas or apps ? (Or free beer? )
You can drag on the corners of the box to make it bigger in the cropping screen.
I was aware of the ability to adjust the size of the crop window using the edge markers. However, the results are often stretch, blurred, pixelated or something else.
I figured out a bit of a workaround though, from looking at this article HERE
To quote them:
Select an image that is 960 x 854 pixels.
Go to the option to change the wallpaper
Select the pictures folder, where you have the images stored (In above mentioned resolution)
A cropping square will appear, drag it to one corner and then maximize it as far as it will go to cover the whole image. Then hit ‘Save’.
Anyone found a good place to find wallpapers of the correct size?
I haven't found a site that has the wallpapers tailor made to our resolution but, interfacelift.com has enough resolution options to satisfy me. I love their wallpapers. They have a lot of photography content, which is beautiful stuff.
Check it out.
the resolution for the screen is 540x960 right?
Yes but that isn't too important because you can crop a selected area. I pick the higher res Android tablet ones and just scale it to fit. Don't worry so much about the resolution because it doesn't mean squat. Pick a higher resolution, set as background, crop the area when it asks, done.
I'd like to make some custom wallpapers that will be compatible with every Android phone, can someone tell me what size they should be? Thanks.
That depends. Clicky
Could I just design them at a very high resolution, and they would scale down and still look good for phones with smaller resolutions?
I generally use computer wallpapers since the phone prompts you to crop & scales down accordingly. However, a lot of people notice better quality when using the correct size. I have cropped and resized all of my wallpapers to the correct size for my device (960x800) because I'm a wallpaper junkie. I have noticed that most people have a 480x800 display, which will use a wallpaper of 960x800 (twice the length, same height to allow for scrolling). Usually wallpapers made for Android - like the ones that come in wallpaper packs - are sized to 960x800. Newer devices are coming out with higher quality displays, and those with HTC Sense 3.0 don't have scrolling wallpaper, so 960x800 isn't future-proof. I would suggest making the wallpapers in a larger resolution, and offering both the high resolution to crop & scale, and an already resized version to 960x800 for the majority of current Android users.

So I have a wallpaper I just want on my homescreen as an image, not chopped out.
Like I have a picture of an animal and want it as my homescreen wallpaper but it just gets all chopped up and zoomed in.
What size do I need to make the wallpaper or what is the trick?
Thanks for any help.
Ed
Standard screen resolution is 480x854 at 240dpi, this means the native is 960x864 at 240dpi; if you take a picture with your camera and want to use the image for your screen wallpaper you'll see that, in the process, it tries to crop it down. During this process you'll have to move the crop boxes, dragging them in order to cover the whole area of the image (not just a piece).
You have to remember that those wallpapers are made to be scrolled so they are in such 3:4 aspect ratio - just see your device so to have the idea of the dimensions of the wallpaper.
Using a custom made wallpaper - an image - is fine but be careful about the dimension: the bigger, the fitter.
So check out the dimensions of the image you are using: a smaller image will be zoomed.
Thank you
You're welcome indeed =)
So I want to experiment with creating looping gifs/videos as live wallpapers with my Pixel 6. I see that the native screen res is 2400x1080 is that the size I should render the video at as well or are live wallpapers lower resoloution and scaled up?
Using smaller sizes and upscaling will save space but the upscaling will soften the image. I would use the screen's actual resolution if possible. To be certain however you should try to extract the wallpapers from the system framework (framework-res apk) and look at them in an image viewer. You'll get the dimensions of the wallpaper that way.
